Scream star Melissa Barrera to reunite with Radio Silence as she will star in their secret monster thriller for Universal Pictures.
Deadline has reported that Melissa Barrera is set to reunite with Radio Silence for an untitled monster thriller set up at Universal.
Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett will direct the project which was scripted by Stephen Shields, with revisions by Guy Busick. Radio Silence started developing the project after the success of last year’s Scream, but when Paramount scrambled to get Scream VI going as quickly as possible, they put it on the back burner. The project is heating up again and the director’s have been meeting with talent. Deadline’s report states that it “became evident pretty quickly that Barrera was the perfect fit for the role following two successful shoots with the rising star and offered her the part.” Melissa Barrera has starred in the last two Scream movies as Sam Carpenter.
The untitled monster thriller will provide “a unique take on legendary monster lore and will represent a fresh, new director for how to celebrate these classic characters.” After the failure of the Dark Universe, the studio has decided against bringing their legendary monsters together in a shared universe. Instead, each new project will be filmmaker-driven with no restrictions on budget, rating, or genre. It’s not clear which monster Radio Silence will tackle, or who Melissa Barrera will play, but previous reports stated that the project used to be titled Dracula’s Daughter.
Melissa Barrera can currently be seen in Scream VI, which has proven to be another big success for the franchise. She will next be seen starring alongside Paul Mescal in a modern musical reimagining of Carmen. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and is expected to hit theaters later this year. Speaking of the Universal Monsters, tomorrow will see the release of Renfield, a horror comedy starring Nicolas Hoult as the long-suffering servant of Dracula (Nicolas Cage). He finds a new lease on life in modern-day New Orleans when he falls in love with Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina) and decides to finally stand up to his creator in hopes of finally breaking free of his servitude. You can check out a review of Renfield from our own David Arroyo right here.
