David Ayer debunks rumor of “Ayer Cut” of Suicide Squad said to be planned for release before DCU starts

While fans of the DCEU are hopeful for more extended cuts of the movies, David Ayer puts a stop to one recent rumor.

When the Snyder Cut of Justice League became a successful campaign, the DC film followers tried to manifest the release of another extended version of a project that had divided audiences, 2016’s Suicide Squad from David Ayer. Suicide Squad had a long list of talent going for it, and it seemed like it would deliver after an immensely popular trailer featuring Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody was released. The reception upon the premiere failed to capture the excitement produced by the trailer, and fans have been somewhat recently clamoring for an “Ayer Cut” of the film. It has been rumored that James Gunn may be release the cut prior to his Superman: Legacy film restarts the universe of DC characters. David Ayer himself would put the kibosh on that rumor through his Twitter.

A Twitter account with the handle @CutAyer that focuses on news and updates of the “Ayer Cut” recently reached out to James Gunn for confirmation while posting pictures of news articles with the headlines, “The Ayer Cut of ‘Suicide Squad’ will be released before the DCU starts” and “James Gunn seems to release ‘Ayer Cut’ before DCU starts next year.” The tweet reads, “There’s a whole string of news articles dropping saying that @JamesGunn is planning to #ReleaseTheAyerCut before the start of the DCU. Any truth here James?”

While the initial tweet was addressed to Gunn, Ayer intercepted with his response which simply read, “Silly rumor. Not true.” That statement was followed by a facepalm emoji.

The movement for releasing the special director’s version of the film took its cue from Zack Snyder’s Justice League campaign. After the lengthy demand from fans that Warner Bros. and DC release the long-rumored Zack Snyder cut of the Justice League movie with the hashtag #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, the film had finally come to fruition when Warners unveiled their streaming platform HBO Max. The long-awaited director’s cut had pleased the loyalists as Snyder not only got to re-edit the film to his original vision but also worked in a lot of additional elements, although these new additions would not get the opportunity for further exploration. This had the fans then start the movement for #RestoreTheSnyderVerse, where they wished for Zack Snyder’s original continuity to be the dominant one going forward in the DC universe.
