Gargoyles live-action TV series is in development for Disney+ from writer Gary Dauberman and James Wan’s Atomic Monster.
Close to thirty years after their debut, the Gargoyles will be returning. THR reports that Gary Dauberman and James Wan’s Atomic Monster production company are developing a live-action Gargoyles TV series for Disney+.
Gary Dauberman will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner on the Gargoyles live-action TV series. There had been rumblings of a live-action Gargoyles movie since the animated series began. Jordan Peele even reportedly pitched a Gargoyles movie to Disney in 2018, but nothing ever came of it. There were rumours that Kenneth Branagh was attached to direct a Gargoyles movie earlier this summer, but Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman quickly shot it down. After so many years of rumours, it’s exciting that something is finally happening with the cult franchise.
The animated Gargoyles series followed a group of nocturnal creatures known as gargoyles who turn to stone during the day. They originally lived in medieval Scotland but were betrayed and cursed to remain frozen in stone until the castle “rises above the clouds.” After being transported to modern-day New York City, they are reawakened and serve as the city’s night-time protectors. The animated series was known for its dark tone and complex story arcs, which was surprising as it was produced by Disney. Gargoyles aired for three seasons before it was cancelled, but it quickly developed a passionate fan following who have kept the series alive for the last three decades.
Gary Dauberman is no stranger to the horror franchise as he wrote Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, and Annabelle Comes Home, which he also directed. Dauberman also co-wrote Andy Muschietti’s It with Chase Palmer and Cary Fukunaga, and returned to pen the sequel by himself. His latest project is a big-screen adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot starring Lewis Pullman, Makenzie Leigh, Alfre Woodard, William Sadler, and Bill Camp. Filming concluded more than a year ago, but Warner Bros. has shelved the movie with no indication of when they might finally release it.
