With Daisy Ridley returning to the galaxy far, far away, Kathleen Kennedy gives slightly more insight on the setting of the upcoming films.
This year’s Star Wars Celebration brought forth a bevy of announcements. From the unveiling of the newest Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny trailer to the teases of upcoming shows like the new season of Andor and the live-action Ahsoka series, Lucasfilm is showing fans that there is a bright future for the Star Wars brand. One of the continually developing projects was the announcement of a new chapter in Star Wars features that was originally to be written by Damon Lindelof and directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Lindelof would eventually part from the project, but it has been revealed that Obaid-Chinoy’s film involves the return of Daisy Ridley’s Rey.
The new untitled Rey films have also been revealed to be a new trilogy, with Obaid-Chinoy helming the first instalment. The only current details known are that it will involve the rebuilding of the Jedi Order and the New Republic. According to ComingSoon, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has spilled slightly more details about the upcoming films.
Kennedy expounds, “As we move into the future space — this story is about 15 years outside of The Rise of Skywalker — obviously we realized post-war, post–First Order rise of the New Jedi Order, we left Episode 9 with Rey making a commitment to Luke Skywalker that she would rebuild the Jedi order.”
She would also explain that although Star Wars is playing to its current strength of serial television, she would like to continue to explore the mainline stories in feature films. “And so here we are — we’re ready to do that. And it took a lot of discussion because, obviously, we’ve been developing stories in different spaces, and television has been a big focus of our attention right now. But there’s still so much interest in what happens after The Rise of Skywalker. So we’re excited to be doing that.”
Although these untitled films are new chapters (although not necessarily deemed official “Episodes”) of the continual Skywalker stories, there are still ideas for unrelated features whose fates are still floating around like Darth Vader’s TIE fighter after the first Death Star attack. Meanwhile, Taika Waititi is still slated to write and direct his own story in a galaxy far, far away.
