The AAMA Reelects Virginia Thomas, CMA (AAMA), as the 2022-2024 AAMA Secretary-Treasurer

The American Association of Medical Assistants® (AAMA) installed Virginia Thomas, CMA (AAMA), as the 2022-2024 AAMA Secretary-Treasurer at the 66th AAMA Annual Conference. In this capacity, Thomas, a resident of Virginia Beach, Virginia, represents medical assistants and CMAs (AAMA)® across the nation.

Medical assisting is one of the nation's careers growing much faster than the average for all occupations, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. Medical assistants work in outpatient health care settings. Employers are seeking and recruiting these allied health professionals because of their uniquely diverse clinical and administrative patient-centered training.

"It is an honor to be reelected by my peers to serve them in this role and to help advance the profession of medical assisting," says Thomas. "Our profession plays an important role in the medical [practice] by delivering quality health care to each patient we come in contact with."

Thomas brings a great deal of experience to her role. She has worked in a pediatric ear, nose and throat specialty practice for over 20 years at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia.

Thomas has served in many capacities for the AAMA, including as a 2015-2019 AAMA Trustee and 2019-2022 Secretary-Treasurer. She has also been a member of several AAMA strategy teams and committees, including Leadership Development, Membership Development, Bylaws and Resolutions and Social Media. Thomas has previously served as president of the Virginia Society of Medical Assistants.

The Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA)® — or CMA (AAMA) — credential represents a medical assistant who has been credentialed through the Certifying Board of the AAMA. The Certifying Board of the AAMA was awarded accreditation by the International Accreditation Service under ISO/IEC Standard 17024:2012, the global benchmark for personnel certification bodies, thus distinguishing the CMA (AAMA) from all other medical assisting certifications.
