Emily Blunt could be the star of Steven Spielberg’s next summer blockbuster

Emily Blunt could be the star of Steven Spielberg’s next summer blockbuster

Whispers around Hollywood say Oppenheimer and The Fally Guy star Emily Blunt could be the star of Steven Spielberg’s next blockbuster.

Word around the Hollywood water cooler is that Oppenheimer and The Fall Guy actress Emily Blunt is eyeing a role in Steven Spielberg’s next summer box office smasher. Amblin Entertainment and Universal are the studios, and the film is based on Spielberg’s story and a script by Jurassic Park’s David Koepp. Kristie Macosko Krieger is producing, with Emily Blunt possibly starring alongside another lead.

There are no plot details, but Universal plans to release the film on May 15, 2026, making it a box office barn burner to light up the summer. Word has it that Spielberg is a big Emily Blunt fan, and his admiration for her work dates back to when she starred in the Amblin-produced adaptation of The Girl on the Train. Spielberg also enjoyed Blunt’s latest feature, The Fall Guy, in which she plays an up-and-coming director looking to make her mark while repairing her relationship with an estranged stunt performer.

Blunt’s reputation for working alongside some of the film industry’s most celebrated filmmakers, like Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, Rob Marshall, Doug Liman, and Rian Johnson, precedes her. Teaming up with Steven Spielberg would be another feather in Blunt’s already ornate cap. Spielberg’s 2026 tentpole is reportedly a UFO story.

In addition to this project, we reported that Spielberg has been working on a new movie based on Bullitt, the classic action thriller starring Steve McQueen. The project received an update late last year from Kristie Macosko Krieger, one of Spielberg’s producing partners. “I’m producing it. Steven [Spielberg] and Josh Singer, who is writing the script, they are working on the story,” Krieger said. “I hope we have a script soon as the writers’ strike put us behind a bit. But they are working on it – I couldn’t tell you if it’s the next movie we are making as I don’t know at this point. I think that it will be a wildly entertaining film.”

Are you excited about Emily Blunt potentially working with Steven Spielberg on a UFO film? Who could join the project as the film’s co-lead? Let’s see your suggestions in the comments.

Everything We Know About Blade, the MCU Reboot (It just lost another director)

Everything We Know About Blade, the MCU Reboot (It just lost another director)

The fact that there was going to be a Blade reboot as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe came as a huge surprise when the announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con back in July of 2019 – but all these years later, we’re still waiting on the film to make its way into production. In fact, with Bob Iger recently announcing that the studio was cutting back (even more) on Marvel stuff, Blade’s future seems in limbo. So, here’s Everything We Know About Blade (the MCU reboot, that is).

MAHERSHALA ALI

The Blade character was previously played by Wesley Snipes in three feature films and by Sticky Fingaz in a short-lived television series. This time around, he’s going to be played by Mahershala Ali, who was already attached to the project when it was announced in 2019… and while there was no indication online that Ali has been interested in playing Blade, this was actually a role he had been chasing for a couple years by that point. During an interview on The Tight Rope podcast, he revealed that he had first asked what Marvel was thinking of doing anything new with Blade on the day the Marvel / Netflix series Luke Cage (where Ali played Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes) premiered, which would have been on September 30, 2016. At that time, Ali was told that Marvel was considering making a new Blade TV series. He wanted to play the character, but in a movie. Soon after he won an Oscar for his performance in the film Green Book at the start of 2019, he was able to get a meeting with Marvel Studios mastermind Kevin Feige to talk about Blade. That’s when the movie deal started to come together.

Although some fans were upset to hear that Wesley Snipes wouldn’t be reprising the title role in Blade, Snipes himself wasn’t bothered. Speaking to Yahoo, Snipes said, “I’m cool with it. I don’t walk around as Blade, so I’m not attached to the character like that, you know? I feel no emotional loss. Zero. I’m happy that he’s been cast, and more than likely he’ll do a great job.” Snipes and Ali did talk about the character, with Snipes giving his successor some advice: make sure you’re in shape, try not to get hurt, and enjoy it while it lasts.

Mia Goth

SUPPORTING CAST

Delroy Lindo has been signed on to appear in Blade alongside Ali since November of 2021, and is apparently still attached to the project. The same isn’t said for Aaron Pierre, who was said to have landed a highly coveted role in the film back in February of 2022… but it seems that his character has since been dropped over the course of the multiple rewrites the script has gone through. Mia Goth was cast in the film back in April of 2023, and rumors have been swirling that she’ll be playing the villainous character Lilith.

At the start of 2022, the folks at Murphy’s Multiverse got their hands on character descriptions that were supposedly being used as part of the casting process. The characters they heard about were: “Abid”, described as a burly, South Asian character who has taken a vow of silence after a turbulent life; “Huntley”, described as a man, 40-60; and “Faiza”, a French-speaking North African female between 20 and 40. They speculated that these characters would actually be Blade’s fellow vampire hunters, introduced in the pages of the comic book Tomb of Dracula. They suspected that “Abid” was Taj Nital, “Huntley” was Quincy Harker, and “Faiza” was Rachel van Helsing. “Taj was indeed a burly, South Asian character who was first introduced in Tomb of Dracula #3, who did not speak; however, in the comics, he didn’t speak because he had his throat ripped out by vampires, so a slight change there. Taj, along with Rachel van Helsing, the granddaughter of great vampire hunter Abraham van Helsing, worked with Quincy Harker to hunt down the world’s oldest vampire threat, Dracula. Harker, the son of Jonathan and Mina Harker from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, eventually worked with Frank Drake, a descendant of Dracula, and Blade to take on the vampire nation.” But if these characters were ever in the script, there’s a chance they have been written out, like the one Aaron Pierre was going to play.

Ali made his debut as Blade with a vocal cameo at the end of Eternals, where he interrupts the character Dane Whitman (played by Kit Harington) before he can touch a mystical sword called the Ebony Blade. In the comics, Whitman becomes the Black Knight while wielding that sword, so some fans thought he might show up as the Black Knight in Blade. However, Harington has said that the Black Knight was never meant to be in the movie. The Ebony Blade, on the other hand, might be a different story…

Logan

WRITER(S)

The movie was announced in July of 2019, but it wasn’t until after we got through the 2020 lockdowns that a writer was hired to work on the film. In February of 2021, we heard that Stacy Osei-Kuffour, known for her work on the TV shows Watchmen and PEN15, was writing the script. Since then, we’ve heard that drafts have also been written by Michael Starrbury (When They See Us), True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto (who worked with Ali on season 3 of that show), and Beau DeMayo (The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf).

At one point, we heard that Blade would start filming in September of 2021. Then it got pushed to July of 2022, with filming to take place in Atlanta, Georgia and New Orleans, Louisiana. There was a delay due to creative issues, and then it would start filming in 2023. It was just weeks away from filming when the production had to be delayed due to the writer’s strike, followed by the actor’s strike… once the writer’s strike ended, it was announced that a new writer, Michael Green (Logan), had been hired to start the script over from scratch.

That’s when Variety reported on some of the problems that had been holding Blade back, including five writers, two directors, and a shutdown six weeks before production was to star. It sounds like there were too many cooks in the kitchen: “One person familiar with the script permutations says the story at one point morphed into a narrative led by women and filled with life lessons. Blade was relegated to the fourth lead, a bizarre idea considering that the studio had two-time Oscar winner Ali on board. Amid reports that Ali was ready to exit over script issues, Feige went back to the drawing board and hired Michael Green, the Oscar-nominated writer of Logan, to start anew.” After getting a look at Green’s script, Feige then passed writing duties over to Eric Pearson, who has worked on Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four.

Starrbury took to social media to say that he never saw a script that didn’t have Blade as the lead, but maybe such a script did exist at some point when he wasn’t involved.

White Boy Rick

DIRECTOR(S)

As Variety mentioned, the project has been through two directors on its way to the screen. John Wick‘s uncredited co-director David Leitch, who has gone on to make films like Deadpool 2 and Hobbs & Shaw, said he would “love to” direct Blade. Chad Stahelski, who directed all of the John Wick movies and was also second unit director on Captain America: Civil War, said Blade was the one Marvel property that he would be really interested in taking the helm of. But instead of those experienced action directors, Marvel turned to Bassam Tariq, a documentarian who made his narrative feature debut with the 2020 drama Mogul Mowgli. Tariq was hired in July of 2021, but stepped away from the project in September of 2022, citing scheduling issues. Two months later, director Yann Demange (White Boy Rick) signed on to take the helm of the film… and for a while, it looked like he was going to get it into production. Then, in June of 2024, The Wrap revealed that Demange had made an amicable departure from the project.

A recent Production Weekly listing claimed the Blade reboot is aiming for a Fall 2024 production start, but they still need to figure out the script and now they need to find a director. There have been rumors about Marvel meeting with Jordan Peele, possibly for Blade, even though Peele has previously said he has no interest in superhero properties. In the meantime, Mahershala Ali is busy working on the new Jurassic World movie.

Everything We Know About Blade

RATED R

It wasn’t always a sure thing that the MCU Blade was going to be rated R like the previous Blade movies were. But when Demange came on board as director, he got Marvel to agree to let him make an R rated movie. As he told Deadline, “They gave me the R, which is so important. … We are going to have fun, because Mahershala is such a deep actor. I’m excited to show a kind of ruthlessness, a roughness he has, that allows him to walk the earth in a particular way. I love him for that. He’s got dignity and integrity, but there is a ferocity there that he usually keeps under the surface. I want to unleash that and put it on the screen.” We’ll see if the R rating sticks now that Demange is no longer involved.

Mahershala Ali

STORY (MAYBE)

Now that Blade seems to be moving forward smoothly with Yann Demange set to direct, Michael Green writing the script, and Mahershala Ali, Delroy Lindo, and Mia Goth cast, industry scooper Daniel Richtman has also shared details on what he hears the story is going to be. According to his Patreon reportBlade is an R-rated period piece that will tell the story of “Lilith going after Blade’s daughter’s blood to create an army of Daywalkers.” Lilith’s weapon will apparently be the Ebony Blade, which was previously featured in Eternals.

Blade has had several release dates over the year, but as far as we know, right now, it’s on track to start filming soon, aiming for a November 7, 2025 theatrical release date. Then again, who knows? It may come in 2026, or not at all…

And that’s everything we know about Blade… so far…

Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie to be written by Jurassic World’s Derek Connolly

Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie to be written by Jurassic World’s Derek Connolly

Jurassic World writer Derek Connolly will pen the script for the upcoming Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie.

The long-awaited Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie has tapped Derek Connolly to write the script. Connolly is no stranger to big-budget franchise movies, having had a hand in writing the scripts for Jurassic World, Kong: Skull Island, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Detective Pikachu, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Chris Hemsworth has been in talks to star in the crossover between Transformers and G.I. Joes, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Michael Bay, Tom DeSanto, and Don Murphy set to produce.

There have been rumblings of a live-action crossover between the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises for quite some time, but the first steps were taken in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. At the close of the film, Anthony Ramos’ character gets a job offer from the Joes. Director Steven Caple Jr. told THR last year that while the studio was keen on the idea, it took almost two years to get everyone to sign off. “I had to talk to all the producers and let them know the vision or direction I was going in,” Caple Jr. said. “I didn’t know all of it at the moment when I had first pitched it or when they first read it, but throughout the process of making this movie, it started to get deeper and deeper. So I knew a little bit more of the direction I wanted to go in with the Joes, but the studio was on board since the beginning. It just took a while to get all the parties on board and settled.

Derek Connolly is also working on the script for the upcoming live-action adaptation of the classic video game The Legend of Zelda, which will be directed by Wes Ball of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Ball has previously said that his vision for the project is “this awesome fantasy-adventure movie that isn’t like Lord of the Rings, it’s its own thing. I’ve always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki. That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that.

What would you like to see Derek Connolly write into the Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie?

New Jurassic World movie is now in production; filming locations and plot details revealed

New Jurassic World movie is now in production; filming locations and plot details revealed

The new Jurassic World movie, directed by Gareth Edwards, is in production and will be filming in Thailand for the next month

Back in January, Universal Pictures made a surprising announcement: not only did they have a new Jurassic World movie in development, but the screenplay – by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, returning to the franchise for the first time since The Lost World: Jurassic Park – had already been written, and the movie was on the fast track to production. Soon after, we learned that it’s aiming for a July 2, 2025 theatrical release. The project has been assembled in a mad scramble over the last five months. At one point, The Fall Guy director David Leitch was in talks to direct, but he had a different vision than Universal was looking forward, so they turned to Godzilla director Gareth Edwards. And with Edwards at the helm, the movie officially went into production today, filming in Thailand.

According to Variety, the new Jurassic World movie will be filming in Thailand through July 16th, with locations including Bangkok, Trang, Phang Nga, Phuket, Chiang Mai and the Huai To Waterfall, which is within the Khao Phanom Bencha National Park in Krabi province. Filming at the waterfall is expected to take a full week. Outside of Thailand, the movie will be filming at studios in Malta and the U.K.

Through equipment rentals, accommodation, venue hire, transportation, and catering services, the production is expected to bring $18 million of economic benefit to Thailand. It’s also expected to seek local subsidy through Thailand’s 20% production spending rebate system. That system is open to international productions that spend more than $2.75 million in the country.

The Variety article mentions that Koepp’s script is a completely fresh take, launching a new Jurassic era, following three adults and three teens getting stuck on the Island. Apparently the project is being referred to as Jurassic World 4 and/or Jurassic City by those who are working on it… but I wouldn’t expect either of those to stick. The previous Jurassic World sequels didn’t have numbered titles, so why would they drop a number in there at 4? And if the story is once again set on “the Island,” why would it be called City? We’ll have to wait and see on the title issue.

We do know that this new Jurassic World movie won’t be featuring any returning lead characters from the previous Jurassic Park / Jurassic World movies. Those played by Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laura Dern are out, as are the ones played by Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. The new characters are set to be played by the likes of Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Rupert Friend (Anatomy of a Scandal), and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer) – all of whom had their roles directly offered to them. Luna Blaise (Manifest), on the other hand, had to (according to Deadline) “beat out a number of actors” to land her role. This new Variety article adds that David Iacono of The Summer I Turned Pretty is also in the cast… along with a bunch of hungry dinosaurs.

Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) was also offered a role, but he turned it down because he felt his presence in the movie wouldn’t help it. He did say that the script is great, though.

Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley are producing the film for Kennedy/Marshall. Steven Spielberg is executive producing through Amblin Entertainment. Universal’s executive vp of production development Sara Scott and creative executive Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the project for the studio.

Are you glad to hear that the new Jurassic World movie is already in production? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

The first trailer for the upcoming two-part, R-rated Watchmen animated movie has been released by Warner Bros.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZWyFaxZ2rc

Warner Bros. Entertainment has dropped the first teaser trailer for the upcoming two-part, R-rated animated Watchmen movie, which I must admit, I had entirely forgotten about.

The project was first announced in 2017, but we haven’t heard much since. The trailer was screened for audiences at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, where it was confirmed that the CG-animated movie would be released in two parts. Chapter I will be released later this summer (with Blu-ray.com giving an August 13th release) with Chapter II coming in 2025.

The acclaimed graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons examines “the lives of the eponymous superhero team as they seem to decay alongside the ever-darkening America around them. Rorschach, Nite Owl, the Silk Spectre, Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias reunite to investigate who’s behind a teammate’s murder, but find that the truth may be even more grim than the world they seek to protect.

The cell-shaded CG animation in the Watchmen trailer certainly pays homage to Gibbons’ original artwork. The project is expected to be a faithful adaptation of the comic, but it’s not the first time Watchmen has been brought to life.

The story, which was considered notoriously tricky to adapt, made the leap to live-action with Zack Snyder’s 2009 movie after decades of failed attempts. Snyder also released a director’s cut of the movie with roughly 24 minutes of additional footage, as well as an animated adaptation of the Tales of the Black Freighter comic within the story featuring Gerard Butler. The last release was an “Ultimate Cut” edition incorporating Tales of the Black Freighter throughout the live-action movie.

Damon Lindelof developed a Watchmen TV series for HBO, which served as a sequel to the comic book, picking up 34 years later. Despite a great deal of uncertainty from fans leading up to its release, the series was actually highly regarded, receiving widespread acclaim.

What do you think of this trailer for the animated Watchmen movies?

Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin partners with Blumhouse, Atomic Monster & New Line for new movie

Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin partners with Blumhouse, Atomic Monster & New Line for new movie

Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin is developing a new movie with Blumhouse, Atomic Monster, and New Line for a 2026 release.

Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin is set to write and direct a new movie for Atomic Monster, Blumhouse, and New Line, marking the first collaboration between the merged companies and Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.

The new Lee Cronin movie has already been given a release date of April 17, 2026, but unfortunately, that’s about all we know at this time as the plot is being kept under wraps. The film is naturally expected to be in the horror genre.

I am super excited to be gathering up my gang of oddballs from Doppelgängers to join forces with the overlords of horror at Blumhouse and Atomic Monster,” Cronin said in a statement. “Collaborating with Jason, James and the wonderful teams from these two storied and massively successful organizations is what perfect nightmares are made of. Getting to return to New Line Cinema and my wonderful partners over there is the cherry on top. I’ve got something wickedly entertaining and terrifying hidden up my sleeve, and I can’t wait to bring it screaming to the big screen on April 17th, 2026.

James Wan, Atomic Monster CEO and founder, said, “Lee is a gifted filmmaker in the world of horror whose storytelling has electrified audiences. We’re excited to collaborate with him on this project, and to bring viewers on a wildly entertaining ride.” Blumhouse CEO and founder Jason Blum added, “Lee’s work is always fresh and surprising and he has an intriguing, modern take on something quite ancient that I think audiences will love. This also marks an exciting series of firsts for us: Atomic Monster and Blumhouse’s first time working with Lee and our first joint project for Warner Bros. We can’t wait to get started.

As far as Evil Dead goes, there are actually two new movies in development. It was announced earlier this year that Sébastien Vaniček (Vermin) had been tapped to direct the next installment of the franchise, but just two months later, it was revealed that Francis Galluppi (The Last Stop In Yuma County) would be writing and directing his own Evil Dead movie. Both movies will be moving forward, but it remains to be seen which will be released first.

Seraxis Wins Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund Grant to Accelerate Development of Allogenetically Compatible Pancreatic Islet Replacement Therapy for Functional Cure of T1D
$400,000 award will support characterization and efficacy testing of preclinical SR-03 cell line as a part of IND development. Seraxis is taking meetings at the American Diabetes Association Annual Meeting in Orlando, June 21-24.

Seraxis, Inc., a regenerative medicine company developing pancreatic islet replacement therapies to transform the lives of patients with Type 1 and insulin-requiring Type 2 diabetes, has been notified that the company is the awardee of a $400,000 Commercialization Program grant from the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund (MSCRF) that aims to foster Maryland research to enhance and propel stem cell treatments. Seraxis will use the MSCRF grant to accelerate the validation and manufacturing of Seraxis’ genetically modified pancreatic cell line (SR-03) that is designed to be a universal allogenic transplant that will not require lifelong anti-rejection immune suppression.

“Over 1.4 million Americans are Type 1 Diabetes patients burdened with daily glucose surveillance and exogenous insulin delivery to avoid glucose excursions and long-term organ damage,” said Dr. William Rust, Ph.D., CEO of Seraxis. “MSCRF’s grant funding will be key to advancing Seraxis’ goal of establishing an immune-compatible allogenic pancreatic islet transplant therapy as a functional cure for people with insulin-requiring diabetes. SR-03 program is informed by SR-02, an islet replacement therapy requiring immune suppression that will enter the clinic by late 2024 for people with hypoglycemic unawares T1D.”

More information on SR-03 and SR-02 is available to potential pharma collaborators during the ADA annual meeting in Orlando next week.

About Seraxis

Seraxis is bringing transformative cures to the millions of people worldwide struggling with the management and life-threatening complications of T1D and insulin-requiring T2D.

Seraxis’ lead program, SR-02, is a novel, off-the-shelf islet replacement therapy slated to enter clinical testing with immunosuppressive therapy in 2024 in patients with severe recurrent hypoglycemia. A follow-on diabetes program, SR-03, is a version of the Seraxis pancreatic clusters altered to be unrecognized by the immune system for use without chronic immune suppression by the broader population of T1D and insulin-requiring T2D.

Seraxis’ underlying proprietary technology enables the creation of a pipeline of novel stem cell-derived therapies originating from single donated organs. The company’s diabetes programs are manufactured from a stem cell line derived from a single highly compatible human donor’s pancreas. These stem cells preferentially re-differentiate into pure pancreatic clusters containing all the endocrine cells of the native pancreatic islet, and with safety, potency, and manufacturing advantages over embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells.

Seraxis is backed by Frazier Life Sciences, Polaris Partners, Eli Lilly, the T1D Fund and independent investors. Seraxis manufactures its best-in-class therapeutic pancreatic clusters using scalable, clinically compliant processes in its cGMP facility located in Maryland’s I-270 Biotech Corridor. Introducing $UTHX, the Preeminent Metaverse Token on the Solana Blockchain
Utherverse (Utherverse.io) announces the August 2024 launch of $UTHX

Utherverse

Utherverse

Utherverse (Utherverse.io) announces the August 2024 launch of $UTHX, the preeminent metaverse token on the Solana blockchain - aimed at transforming the metaverse landscape by offering unparalleled utility within the Utherverse ecosystem.

The $UTHX token presale, available for purchase at Utherversepresale.nexusecosystem.io, will be conducted in four rounds: Round A at $0.05, Round B at $0.055, Round C at $0.06, and the launchpad at $0.065. A total of 210 million tokens will be sold across Rounds A-C, with an additional 80 million tokens allocated to the Launchpad. The total lifetime supply of $UTHX tokens will be 3 billion, but the majority of these tokens are locked and will be released gradually over the next decade as the Utherverse Metaverse expands.

The decision to launch $UTHX on the Solana blockchain underscores Utherverse’s commitment to leveraging state-of-the-art technology to enhance user experience. “Solana users will be happy to know that the world's preeminent metaverse has chosen this chain on which to run,” said Utherverse founder and CEO Brian Shuster. “The launch on Solana ensures that $UTHX benefits from Solana's high-speed transactions and low fees, providing a seamless user experience.”

The $UTHX token serves as the main utility token within the Utherverse platform, designed to offer real and necessary utility across the entire ecosystem. $UTHX can be used for various purposes, including transacting outside the virtual world platform using traditional crypto wallets and multiple distributed ledgers. Additionally, users can stake their $UTHX tokens to earn rewards and multipliers on their holdings. The token distribution includes halving rewards for users to encourage platform adoption, and airdrops to affiliates, users and Utherverse Sovereigns.

Participants in the presale will qualify for additional rewards and staking opportunities. Utherverse has allocated 300 million tokens in a reserve called the New User Strategic Reserve (NUSR). These tokens will be unlocked and airdropped as the Metaverse platform gains popularity, rewarding users based on various criteria, including presale participation. However, due to regulatory restrictions, the presale of $UTHX tokens is not available to individuals in the USA or Canada unless they are accredited investors. For those still interested in participating, Utherverse offers membership packages that include benefits and discounts, as well as in-world tokens for use within the metaverse, at Utherverse.io.

Utherverse's next-generation platform, using the Xaeon metaverse browser, seamlessly interconnects with all metaverses on the platform. Steve Carell says Domhnall Gleeson reached out about The Office follow-up series

Steve Carell says Domhnall Gleeson reached out to ask his advice about starring in the upcoming follow-up series to The Office.

A follow-up to The Office was officially given a series order by Peacock last month, and while Steve Carell won’t be reprising his role as Michael Scott, he did have some advice for new star Domhnall Gleeson.

Steve Carell and Domhnall Gleeson starred together in FX’s limited series The Patient, so when Gleeson was trying to decide whether he should take The Office gig, he reached out to Carell. “I know Domhnall Gleeson – who I did ‘The Patient’ with – is going to be one of the leads. I know that for sure,” Carell told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. “He’s an excellent actor. And he actually called me and asked, you know, ‘Should I do this? Is this something… Did you enjoy it?’ I said, ‘Of course.’

The official logline for The Office follow-up reads: “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.” The untitled follow-up comes from Greg Daniels (The Office) and Michael Koman (Nathan for You) and will star Domhnall Gleeson (Ex-Machina) and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus). Further members of the ensemble cast will be announced soon as production is expected to kick off next month.

It’s been more than 10 years since the final episode of The Office aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock,” said Lisa Katz, president of NBCUniversal Entertainment. “In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.

In an interview last month, Carell said that while he won’t be appearing in The Office follow-up, he will be watching. “I will be watching but I will not be showing up. It’s just a new thing and there’s really no reason for my character [Michael Scott] to show up in something like that,” he said. “But I’m excited about it, it sounds like a great conceit. I love the idea — I guess it’s set in a failing newspaper company.
