The Global Healthcare Leaders Foundation (GHLF) Stands to Revolutionize the Industry Through an Unwavering Focus on Healthcare Excellence to Ignite Leadership and Innovation

The Global Healthcare Leaders Foundation (GHLF) is proud to announce its official launch, representing a new coalition of healthcare professionals from across the globe, dedicated to enhancing healthcare delivery, patient safety, and mental health services.

Founded by a select group of Harvard Medical School's Global Healthcare Leadership Program alumni, the foundation brings together experts in IT, medical devices, consulting, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare services. GHLF, with representatives from over 50 countries, aims to foster collaboration, expertise and breakthroughs while enhancing hospital operational efficiencies, expanding access to cutting-edge medical technologies and advocating for equitable healthcare solutions.

"Our journey began with our enrollment in the GHLP, where we united over a common goal," remarked Anya Ohavi Neizler, one of the foundation's founders and the Executive Director. "We are a group of over 120 healthcare professionals from around the globe, and we realized that every unmet need in healthcare can gain value under this umbrella. Early on, we quickly understood our commitment to move the needle in global healthcare, identifying tangible ways to make a substantial impact."

"Our organization aims to empower global healthcare leaders and harness their collective expertise to create life-changing solutions for patients," explained Zuzanna Stern, a founder and co-Executive Director of GHLF. "Together, we are committed to driving innovation and evolution across all facets of the healthcare industry," added Richard Hosein, a founder and the President of the Board.

Driven by this conviction, Ohavi-Neizler, Stern, and Hosein spearheaded the formation of GHLF, inviting like-minded individuals to join their cause. Founding members including Ravi Lam, Karen Nussbaumer, Adriana Franco Alanis, Shalu Gugnani, Suguna Chunduri, Maciej Gnatowski, Amel Hammad, Jocelyn Campbell, and David Franklin joined forces, making their vision a reality. Since the formation, Rasika Iyer and Ekaterina Karlova have joined to lead the GTM and program strategy.

Preliminary Strategic Directions for GHLF:

  • Excellence in Hospital Processes: Enhancing operational efficiency and safety in hospital environments with a specific focus on operating room (OR) efficiency, Hospital-at-Home programs, and innovations in ICU care.
  • Access to Innovation: Promoting the integration of cutting-edge medical technologies and innovative healthcare solutions to improve patient outcomes.
  • Social Responsibility: Committing to social responsibility initiatives that focus on the health and well-being of children and teenagers.
  • Patient Resources: Developing and providing comprehensive resources and support systems to empower patients and their families, including those dealing with mental health challenges.

The pre-launch event on May 17, 2024, at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Boston, will serve as a platform to introduce GHLF's mission and vision to the world, rallying support for its cause of advancing healthcare access globally.

"We hold the key to unlocking solutions that can address the most pressing healthcare challenges," say the founders. "As a collective group of successful entrepreneurs and industry experts, we are poised to drive transformative change in healthcare."

The onboarding process of founding members for GHLF has begun. As founding members, these leaders will have the unique opportunity to shape and contribute to the strategic direction of the foundation, ensuring that their expertise and vision directly influence the advancement and impact of their initiatives. The first founding member to join the foundation is Sumit Nagpal, Cherish Health CEO.

We are grateful for the generous support of our sponsors Thinkhat, Cherish, and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, who have played a significant role in making this launch event possible.

Lifescapes Counseling Offers ‘Is It Time for Medication?’ Webinar
Connecting People to Professionals

Wondering if it is time to start medication for a mental health issue?  Do you wish you could get an honest answer to your questions about psychotropic medication without committing to treatment or waiting forever for an appointment? What if you could anonymously ask a panel of legitimate professionals your most private questions in real time?

Well, that opportunity is here. A local mental health practice will soon give the public a chance to ask their burning psychiatric medication questions. On May 16th, Lifescapes Counseling will present their second in a series of educational webinars, live via video in an interactive, question-and-answer format. “Is It Time for Medication?” will be presented by experienced licensed mental health providers Kathryn Wriggelsworth, DNP, PMHNP-BC, Ram Miro, DNP, PMHNP-BC, and Amy Moulds, MEd, LCMHCS.

During this webinar, we'll present basic information about psychotropic medication, including risks/benefits/side effects. We will also explore the reasons many people are anxious to go the psychiatry route and how to decide if it is time to try meds. Participants will also learn why such referrals are made, and how to find a medication provider with whom they feel comfortable.

The ACCESSlifescapes Webinar Series uses a large group environment to reach people with questions. “We want to provide the opportunity to chat with real therapists in real time at low cost,” says Practice Director Amy Moulds. “It can be hard to identify trustworthy information online, and many people would be surprised to know how common their most guarded questions actually are.”

As therapy requires financial and scheduling commitments that are not feasible for everyone, ACCESSlifescapes offers the opportunity to interact directly with licensed professionals about a range of timely psychological, psychiatric, and behavioral issues, such as school refusal, psychiatric medication, parenting LGBTQIA+ adolescents, eating disorders, etc.  This webinar format will allow participants (who will not be visible) to receive peer support and validation in a private setting.

Participants will have the opportunity to submit questions privately when completing the online registration. This allows the presenting clinicians to organize the webinar in a manner that will prioritize the most requested information. Participants can ask their questions anonymously during the webinar. Registration is limited and can be accessed here: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_uWvbppPGRE-QrZf82PCmug.

Past webinar recordings are also available at our website, including “Dealing Effectively with School Refusal.” If you would like to register for the  “Is It Time for Medication?” webinar, or to access the schedule of future webinar topics, please visit www.lifescapescounseling.com/accesslifescapes-webinars.

Avenger co-stars blown away by Renner’s resilience

Avenger co-stars blown away by Renner’s resilience

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth had nothing but positives for Avenger Jeremy Renner after reuniting at Chris Evans’ wedding.

There are a few unwritten rules for weddings. One, don’t wear white unless you’re the bride. Two, don’t make a speech unless you are specifically told to do so. And three, this is not your day. By all accounts, Jeremy Renner followed all of these at the wedding of fellow Avenger Chris Evans, but many of his friends and MCU stars couldn’t help but put a spotlight on the actor, who has made one hell of a recovery following his January 1st, 2023 accident.

Speaking on Jeremy Renner’s recovery and just how far he has come in that time, Avengers co-star Robert Downey Jr. said, “If there’s one characteristic we’d all agree is paramount…it’s resilience. To see Renner embody that literally, and in the context of what was basically a Portuguese American wedding, was mind-blowing. Fully recovered and ready to celebrate. So, yes—miracles happen.” “Perseverance” is the perfect word to describe Jeremy Renner, whose well-documented progress through his recovery has made him an Avengers-level superhero to many.

Evans wed Alba Baptista last September, just over eight months after a snowplow weighing over 14,000 pounds crushed him, a near-death experience which resulted in blunt chest trauma and 30 broken bones. While he would probably never brag about it, RDJ proved to be one of Renner’s most consistent Avengers co-stars in terms of checking in and giving good vibes.

Evans’ wedding was actually the first time another Avenger, Chris Hemsworth, had seen Renner since his accident. “He sent us all a sort of a doped out, hospital, beat-up image and said, ‘All good, guys.’ And then I didn’t hear from him for a while as he was in the thick of it.” Hemsworth added, “There was an astounding sense of gratitude from him around just being alive.”

While a lot is up in the air as far as the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe goes, fifth and sixth Avengers movies are in development, so we’ll have to see just how/if the likes of Renner, RDJ, Hemsworth, and the rest assemble yet again – although some seem more committed than others

What do you want to see Jeremy Renner tackle in the near future? Let us know by dropping a comment below.

Freyja HealthCare’s VereSee™ Device Receives 510(k) Clearance, the First of Many Products

Freyja HealthCare’s VereSee™ Device Receives 510(k) Clearance, the First of Many Products
Freyja Healthcare Brings First-of-Its-Kind 2mm Abdominal-Access Device to Laparoscopic Surgery to Further Innovation in Fast-Growing Women’s Health Market

Freyja Healthcare, an early-stage medical device company focused on developing a robust product portfolio of highly innovative products for women’s health, today announced that its novel VereSee device received 510(k) clearance from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Clearance from the FDA marks a critical step in enabling Freyja and VereSee — the first and only 2mm, safe abdominal-access video-entry device for laparoscopic surgery — to bring further innovation in the fast-growing women’s health market.  VereSee will reinvigorate a category that has not seen innovation in over three decades.

Founded by Jón Ívar Einarsson, MD, PhD, MPH, and Gaby Moawad, MD, FACOG, Freyja’s mission is to raise the standard of women’s health in both surgical and in-office procedures, enabling physicians to deliver safe and effective care. As the company’s first novel product, the VereSee device features a proprietary design engineered to be simple for the surgeon, safe for the patient, and highly differentiated from the current standard of care. The company now has four products in advanced stages of development, 17 granted patents and 21 pending patents.

“From the beginning, I’ve been impressed with Freyja’s mission to improve gynecologic solutions for women and the providers who take care of them. With this first product, Freyja is bringing  meaningful innovation to a category ready for change,” said Kim Rodriguez, longtime Freyja Executive Chairman and former CEO of Acessa Health.

There are 4.8 million laparoscopic surgeries performed annually in the United States. Abdominal entry is the most dangerous step of laparoscopic and robotic surgery in women’s health, and in all laparoscopic surgery across all specialty areas. This dangerous step results in one patient death and eight injuries in the U.S. each day[1].

“The standard of care is dangerous and outdated. Initial entry is often done blindly with Veres needles or a 5-12mm optical trocar,” said Jón Ívar Einarsson, MD, co-founder and interim CEO of Freyja. “Damaging the bowel or vasculature because of blind entry can cause significant harm, even death, if undetected.”

As a part of the FDA clearance process, Freyja performed extensive testing and documentation of the safety and efficacy of the product, validating the company’s confidence in the design of its VereSee product.

“FDA clearance has been a long process for us, and we know that this is one of the largest barriers to entry for new products in this category,” said Gaby Moawad, MD, co-founder and Board Director of Freyja. “However, we understand the importance of these devices being held to the highest standards of safety and quality. We are proud of the work our team has done to reach this milestone for Freyja.”

Freyja will soon begin initial commercialization of the VereSee device, with broad availability expected in the second half of 2024.

About Freyja Healthcare

Freyja Healthcare was founded in 2017, has four products in advanced stages of development, 17 granted patents and 21 pending patents, and is engineering a robust product portfolio focused on safe and effective surgical and in-office solutions for women. Founded by two well-respected, minimally invasive gynecologic surgeons, Jón Ívar Einarsson, MD, PhD, MPH, Past-President of AAGL, founder of the Division of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS) at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and a Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School, and Gaby Moawad, MD, FACOG, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (GWSMHS). Drs. Einarsson and Moawad are inventing and building the products they wish they had early in their careers and elevating the standards for products used in women’s health surgical and in-office care. Freyja has raised almost $8 million in seed funding from private and professional high net-worth investors. Learn more at Freyja Healthcare.

Yunu Delivers a New Imaging Workflow Paradigm for Investigator-Initiated Trials
Investigators rapidly activate sites, expand trial reach, and achieve real-time data oversight with a complete and affordable cloud-based research imaging platform.

Yunu, creator of a first-of-kind clinical trial imaging workflow, reading, and data management platform, is extending the reach of investigator-initiated trials (IITs) into broader and more diverse communities while harmonizing trial data on its unified cloud-based platform. By leveraging the Yunu ecosystem, Principal Investigators (PIs) are lowering costs, accelerating trial timelines, and improving the accuracy of cross-site IIT research.

Effective collaboration and data management is essential for investigator-initiated trials that need to bridge the gaps associated with reaching patients beyond their primary institution while managing tight budget constraints. Traditionally, multi-site IITs have been fraught with logistical challenges, communication barriers, quality issues leading to assessment errors and protocol violations, and administrative complexities as PIs must often rely on disparate systems and paper-based approaches to manage the tracking of study scheduling, image measurement, patient response, billing, and data storage. Furthermore, fragmented and multi-channel communication has led to trial delays, inefficiencies, and non-compliance. Recognizing these challenges, Yunu empowers PIs to collaborate and coordinate their research endeavors seamlessly by leveraging the innovative platform already in place across over 20% of NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers.

Principal Investigators and their study staff can now rapidly stand-up trials, add new trial sites, securely manage multi-site data, connect to qualified readers in the Yunuverse, and gain real-time visibility through a single, comprehensive trial dashboard. These collective insights accelerate decision-making and help investigators understand the early signals affecting trial outcomes in real-time. With user-friendly tools for site data de-identification and upload, secure permission-based access rights, and streamlined trial imaging assessment workflow, trial setup and coordination can be centralized while site participation tasks remain harmonized.

"We are ushering in a new era of connected clinical trial workflow to revolutionize the way research is conducted and accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into real-world impact more quickly," said Gordon Harris, Chief Science Officer and Co-Founder of Yunu. "Our efficient technology-driven approach provides both affordability and extensibility. Trials are reaching patients where they live; sites are scaling their capacity because of the efficiency gains their study staff experience, and PIs are quickly adopting and promoting this new way of working across all sites and stakeholders in real-time.”

About Yunu

Yunu provides medical research technology and services to life sciences companies and clinical research environments that perform precision imaging assessments. Yunu’s aim is to ensure breakthrough therapies are accessible to everyone by unifying medical imaging insights and connecting clinical communities. With thousands of clinical trials relying on the platform daily, Yunu is delivering a new standard for clinical trial imaging workflow.

Chris Pine is “stunned” that Wonder Woman 3 isn’t happening

Chris Pine is “stunned” that Wonder Woman 3 isn’t happening

Chris Pine admits that he’s “stunned” that Wonder Woman 3 isn’t happening: “I don’t know what the reasoning was behind that.”

As we know, Wonder Woman 3 is no longer moving forward now that James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken over DC Studios, but it’s a choice Chris Pine doesn’t understand.

Chris Pine. who played Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984, told Business Insider that he was “stunned” when he learned Wonder Woman 3 had been axed. “I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere,” Pine said “I don’t know what the reasoning was behind that; it’s above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character; Patty is such a thoughtful director.

The actor had no expectations that he would have been involved in the third movie. “Me. No. Homie is dead. Steve is gonzo,” he said. “It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back.” Trevor was killed off in the first Wonder Woman movie but was brought back for Wonder Woman 1984 through a little comic-book magic. As Pine said, it would have been a little ridiculous if they brought him back yet again.

As much as Pine loves the Wonder Woman franchise nowadays, he initially hesitated to sign on. “I had no interest in playing the boyfriend, and it sounded like second fiddle,” Pine said. “Then, in talking to Patty, the way she described it was, ‘Forget the superhero of it all, this is a romance, this is ‘Casablanca,’ that’s the movie I want to make.’ I was like, oh, now that is very cool because when have you seen a superhero film that was a love story, ultimately? That had nothing to do with blowing shit up.

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins has said that she doesn’t believe DC Studios is “interested in doing any ‘Wonder Woman’ for the time being,” but she doesn’t hold any ill will. “It’s not an easy task, with what’s going on with DC. James Gunn and Peter Safran have to follow their own heart into their own plans,” Jenkins said. “I don’t know what they are planning on doing or why, so I have sympathy for what a big job it is and they have to follow their heart and do what they’ve got planned.“ At the moment, the only Wonder Woman-related project in development for the new DC Universe is the Paradise Lost prequel series for Max.

Chris Pine will next be seen in Poolman, which he also co-wrote and directed. After catching the flick at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, our own Chris Bumbray said it was one of the worst movies he’s ever reviewed. Yikes. You’ll be able to find out for yourself when Poolman is released on May 10th.

The Strangers Trilogy: Renny Harlin is planning a 4.5 hour mega-cut

The Strangers Trilogy: Renny Harlin is planning a 4.5 hour mega-cut

The Strangers marks Renny Harlin’s return to the horror genre, and his three films are being planned as an odyssey.

Like many of you, I was scratching my head when I learned that director Renny Harlin would be making not one, not two, but three movies based on the horror cult classic The Strangers. While a pretty slick horror flick, the original spawned a modest follow-up that didn’t get a ton of buzz. When it came out, I figured it was a series that had run its course. It seems this is not so, with Lionsgate releasing a widely ambitious trilogy of horror films this year (it’s like the horror version of Kevin Costner’s Horizon).

Notably, it marks the return of director Renny Harlin to the horror genre. Now mostly known for his action films, such as the classics Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and many more – horror was where he made his original reputation. Prison, which gave Viggo Mortensen his first leading role, was a cult hit, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master was a smash. Since then, he’s dipped his toe back into the genre with movies like Deep Blue Sea and Mindhunters, but usually when they’re a hybrid with another genre.

Not so for The Strangers trilogy, which is straight-up horror. According to a recent report in Variety, Harlin shot all three films in one fifty-two-day shoot, and he’s already planning to cut together a 4.5-hour version of the film (from a 285-page script), which will exist as a kind of horror odyssey. As he told Variety, “I definitely want to have that event and see if people take four and a half hours of dread and fear and terror and despair.”

In the interview, Harlin denies the movie is any kind of remake, with him evoking a lot of admiration for the original Bryan Bertino film, even admitting to being intimidated by its quality. “Simply doing a sequel or remake didn’t appeal to me, but this was such an opportunity to have four and a half hours of a case study of victims of a violent crime and the perpetrators and what makes them tick and how it affects a person who goes through this.”

Indeed, the producer Courtney Solomon admits its the hook of the original movie that’s proved to be irresistible: “It’s the primal nature of the original concept, these three random people and unexplained, random acts of violence, which is just so terrifying and real. I don’t know if you can improve upon that, so why don’t we take that basic premise as a starting point and modify it for a bigger story that becomes proper, character-driven horror.

For a whole lot more on The Strangers: Chapter 1, which opens May 17th, stay tuned to JoBlo as our own Tyler Nichols is attending the premiere in Los Angeles this week. For more on Harlin’s take on The Strangers, check out our exclusive interview with him HERE.
