Today, Rivers are Life is thrilled to announce a new partnership with Waterhaul, the U.K.-based organization transforming our oceans’ plastics into purposeful products that inspire action. Together, the organizations will work to promote waterway protection and exploration across the globe.
A recent survey, conducted by SAVANTA, and commissioned by Rivers are Life, found that 59% of respondents plan to clean their local rivers in 2024. Looking to turn ambition into action, Rivers are Life and Waterhaul will create co-branded cleanup kits to help people across the globe take care of their waterways.
The unique cleanup kits were designed using 100% recycled materials and made durable to be repurposed and reused for years — leaving no negative impact on the environment. The cleanup kits consist of:
Upcycled clean up bags made from recycled sails – making every bag uniquely designed with no bag being the same. Spinnaker sails were selected, as an estimated 97% of retired sails end up in landfills.
32” foldable litter picker - composed of recycled ocean plastic components (i.e. trawl nets and lines) and with recycled aluminum extruded shafts, stainless steel rivets, and 100% recycled PET string.
Litter picking bag hoop - made from recycled fishing gear, predominantly potting lines (rope), which is one of the most common forms of end-of-life fishing gear found on UK coastlines.
These thoughtfully curated kits will be used at Rivers are Life-sponsored cleanup events, such as the Baltimore Floatilla event (June 7 & 8) to raise awareness around water pollution issues in the Baltimore Harbor, as well as Trout Unlimited Expeditions in Wyoming (June 16-25; July 11-20; August 2-11) to inspire the next generation of youth to experience, take care of, and advocate for native and wild trout and salmon populations and the waters they inhabit.
“Rivers are Life is excited and proud to work with Waterhaul to inspire action surrounding waterway cleanup,” said Katie Horning, Director Marketing, Rivers are Life. “With these kits, we hope to empower and equip our vast network of River Heroes and partners with the tools and resources for seamless cleanup efforts.”
“We’re proud to be working with Rivers are Life, who will be using our litter-picking equipment to support the positive impact of their cleanups. Rivers are an essential part of our ecosystem that all lead to the ocean, so it is so important to ensure they’re free from plastic pollution!” said Kieran Hill, Head of Sales at Waterhaul. “Knowing that equipment made from fishing gear that was previously damaging our ocean is going out into the world to tackle the plastic pollution crisis is something we’re incredibly proud of.”
Rivers are Life x Waterhaul cleanup kits are now available for online presale here. All profits from the kits are going to support river impact projects around the globe.

The industry-first program aims to address the $50B in fall-related healthcare costs for older adults through a combination of innovative connected health devices, AI virtual assistance, predictive risk analytics, and support services.
BALA-CYNWYD, Pa., April 18, 2024 (Newswire.com)
-
Connect America, a nationally recognized innovator of virtual care solutions that enable older adults and those living with chronic conditions to live safely and well at home, today announced the launch of its innovative fall prevention program.
Designed to help identify, predict and reduce falls among aging and at-risk populations through a comprehensive, integrated approach, the Connect America Fall Prevention Program combines early risk identification, predictive intelligence, participant engagement, education and support.
As the leading cause of death and injury among older adults in America, falls have severe implications, including injuries, hospitalizations, disabilities, and even mortality. Not only can a fall adversely impact an individual’s quality of life and independence, but the costs of falls and their long-term effects have an enormous burden on the U.S. healthcare system. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the average cost of a fall is $30,000. In addition, nearly $50 billion a year is spent on medical expenses related to non-fatal fall injuries and a total of $754 million is spent on fatal falls.
The Connect America Fall Prevention Program is taking aim at this insurmountable problem with innovative connected health technology, such as AI-virtual engagement, predictive analytics, and support services to help identify and predict those at risk and deliver preventative care interventions to help minimize the potential of a fall or fall injury.
Rooted in evidence-based data, the program provides partnering healthcare organizations with unparalleled visibility into an individual’s mobility and signs of frailty, including shifts in health, activity, and engagement. This is essential because declines in activity are a significant predictor of falls. With this critical intelligence, care teams can quickly identify at-risk individuals and target personalized interventions to significantly reduce falls. In fact, research has shown that interventions can significantly reverse declining activity and prevent fall injuries by up to 37%.
The Connect America Fall Prevention Program incorporates customized protocols that can be configured to fit the needs of participating health partners and their patients or members, and encompasses the following:
A CDC falls assessment
Risk scoring for identification and stratification of population health
CareSage™ Analytics and population-based reporting, including trends, SDOH impact and prediction
Connected health devices for remote monitoring
Esper, AI-virtual assistant for enhanced engagement, communicating surveys and educational content
Customized protocols and call routing
24/7 concierge and clinical support
“For many older adults, a fall or fall injury can mean a complete loss of independence and the inability to live safely at home. A comprehensive fall prevention program like this can help payers, providers, and caregivers make meaningful strides toward safer environments that help reduce falls and improve quality and safety. At the same time, it will keep seniors out of the hospital and living independently and well in their homes,” said Rosemary Kennedy, Chief Health Informatics Officer at Connect America.
A recent article in the Journal of America Medicine Association (JAMA) found that fall-related injuries ranked as the third leading readmission diagnosis among at-risk older adults, demonstrating the importance of greater attention towards post-discharge fall prevention strategies as a cost-effective mechanism with the potential to reduce readmissions and improve patient care.
For healthcare plans, the value of a comprehensive program like Connect America’s Fall Prevention Program can not only help improve STAR ratings and meet HEDIS requirements set forth by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), but it can also lower unnecessary care utilization and keep members safer in their homes. For hospitals and value-based care organizations, the program can help improve quality, increase patient satisfaction, and reduce the potential likelihood of costly readmissions.
“Every second of every day, an older adult (age 65+) in the U.S. suffers a fall. These numbers are devastating, but falls aren’t an inevitable consequence of aging. Connect America’s Fall Prevention Program empowers healthcare organizations with critical intelligence to identify high-risk individuals and target interventions for those who need it the most. The program is unique because it integrates predictive risk analytics, connected health devices, engagement, education and support into one comprehensive program,” said Janet Dillione, CEO of Connect America.
The Connect America organization is no stranger to finding efficient and effective solutions that help keep aging and at-risk populations safe and well at home. Last May, the organization published results from an IRB-approved study that demonstrated the effectiveness of its proprietary CareSage Analytics platform in preventing hospital readmissions, ED visits and overall hospitalization costs. Today, the organization has over 900,000 active subscribers, 3,000+ healthcare partners, 250K senior living residents, and 40K+ patients monitored.

Latest study from The Harris Poll Thought Leadership Practice finds Americans turn to astrology for comfort, guidance, meaning – and often their next date.
NEW YORK, April 18, 2024 (Newswire.com)
-
The stars may not hold your fate, but they could hold your date: The latest study from The Harris Poll Thought Leadership Practice finds most Americans believe at least somewhat in astrology – and strong majorities, especially among Millennials, sayastrology literally makes or breaks their romances.
The findings in the “Astrology Survey” are based on a January 2024 survey of a nationally representative sample of 2,069 U.S. adults across all demographic groups: Gen Z (ages 18-26), Millennials (ages 27-42), Gen X (ages 43-58) and Boomers (ages 59 and older).
Among the key findings: A strong majority of Americans (85%) feel either positive or neutral about astrology, and about six in 10 (61%) agree that “astrology provides comfort in uncertain times by serving as a reassuring friend for those seeking guidance.”
“As people seek to try to navigate today's implausible uncertainty and misinformation, astrology for many has become one source of trusted or at least considered advice,” said Libby Rodney, Chief Strategy Officer and Futurist at The Harris Poll. “We especially found it interesting in the realm of dating, where over half of Millennials consult the signs before going out on a date, and four in 10 have actually canceled a date due to an undesired sign.”
Influence on Daily Decisions
The Harris Poll finds Americans get guidance from the stars on a variety of decisions: especially when it comes to how to best practice self-care (53%), going official with a romantic relationship (49%), and even career advice (43%).
In addition, most Americans say they turn to astrology for guidance in their lives. Majorities say they have consulted or would consult the stars for self-care or health advice (59%) or relationship advice (57%), and nearly half would do so for help on life choices (44%) or career (43%).
Those numbers are strongest among Millennials. They are even more likely to use astrology for career advice (65%) and even more so for relationship advice (81%). About two-thirds look to astrology to help them decide whom to date (65%) or whether they should make their romantic relationship “official” (67%).
Astrology & Millennial Dating
A staggering 81% of Millennials say they have an opinion on which sign they most want to date, and nearly as many (74%) on which sign they’d least want to date. And they act on those opinions:
More than six in 10 (64%) know which signs they’re most compatible with.
More than half (56%) check a person’s sign before agreeing to go on a date.
Almost half (45%) refuse to date certain signs.
Four in 10 (40%) have actually canceled a date due to someone’s sign.
Millennials’ preferences, according to The Harris Poll: “Air” signs (Libra, Gemini, Aquarius) and “Fire” signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are the most popular, and Libras narrowly the most popular individual sign. Scorpios are the sign Millennials most avoid, and their element group, "Water", also is the most avoided. Geminis may be the most polarizing sign for Millennials: They’re the third most preferred sign and the second most avoided.
Regardless of preferences, Millennials believe their faith in astrology pays off: Well over half of Millennials (58%) say astrology has improved their dating life and almost two-thirds (64%) say it has improved their relationships.
Astrology and Self-Identification
Virtually all (95%) Americans know their astrological sign – 29% even know their pet’s sign – and about two-thirds (65%) say their sign “is an accurate description of themselves.”
While fun and entertainment was the biggest reason (58%) people said they engaged with astrology, nearly a third said astrology helps them understand themselves better (31%) or is a tool for self-reflection (30%).
Astrology Believers vs. Skeptics
Half (51%) of Americans say they “believe somewhat” in astrology, finding it fun and interesting to learn about, but not all true. But nearly one in five (18%) are “total believers,” saying they identify with astrological meanings and predictions.
Gen Z was in one way the generation most skeptical of astrology: More than half (54%) say they “judge people who take astrology too seriously,” compared to 38% of all respondents.
The Harris Poll corrects a common misconception that astrology is a “girl thing”: Men are as likely as women to be “total believers” (19% men/18% women), more likely to consult astrology for guidance (40%/30%), more likely to pay for astrology (32%/26%), and pay more for it on average ($83 per month/$56 per month).
Astrology Versus Religion for Millennials
And for Millennials, astrology can even be an alternative to “traditional” religion -- about a third (31%) say astrology “gives me something bigger than myself to believe in,” and most (56%) say more of their peers believe in astrology than they do in religion.
Willingness to Pay for Astrological Services
Americans’ overall belief in astrology is strong enough that people will pay – often a lot – for astrology content and services. Nearly three in 10 (29%) of Americans pay monthly for astrological content, with median spending between $20 and $49 per month – and one in six (17%) pay $100 a month or more. That trend is even stronger for Millennials, where more than half (56%) pay for astrology content.
This survey by The Harris Poll was conducted online within the United States from January 12 to 14, 2024, among a nationally representative sample of 2,069 U.S. adults. This research comprises 328 Gen Z (ages 18-26), 784 Millennials (ages 27-42), 485 Gen X (ages 43-58), and 472 Boomers (ages 59 and older).

Lumberjack the Monster, a new horror movie from director Takashi Miike, will be reaching the Netflix streaming service in June
Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike has over 115 directing credits to his name, and it has only taken him 33 years to reach that impressive number. One of his latest credits came on a blood-soaked horror thriller called Lumberjack the Monster, and the folks at Rue Morgue have confirmed that Lumberjack the Monster is going to be available to watch on the Netflix streaming service as of June 1st.
Before the film reaches Netflix, New York City’s Japan Society (located at 333 East 47th Street) will be hosting its the North American premiere screening on Monday, May 6 at 8pm. Rue Morgue notes, “There will also be a pre-screening reception at 7pm with beverages donated by Sapporo-Stone Brewing and Brooklyn Kura. The screening is being presented in conjunction with the Tribeca Film Festival, as part of its Escape from Tribeca program.”
Lumberjack the Monster is based on a novel by Mayusuke Kurai and stars Kazuya Kamenashi, Nanao, Riho Yoshioka, Shota Sometani, and Shido Nakamura. The film has the following description: This cat-and-mouse chase between a serial killer and a lawyer hot on his trail is filled with gruesome murders, missing brains, and disturbing secrets. The most disturbing? The lawyer is a psychopath. Yes, Takashi Miike’s newest nightmare is the brutal showdown between a serial killer and a psychopath lawyer. It’s a bloody good time.
The 1999 release Audition may be the most popular film Takashi Miike has ever made. Among his many other credits are Dead or Alive, Ichi the Killer, The Happiness of the Katakuris, Gozu, One Missed Call, The Great Yokai War, Sukiyaki Western Django, 13 Assassins, Yakuza Apocalypse, and Blade of the Immortal. He made a cameo in Eli Roth’s Hostel, and contributed to the Masters of Horror TV series with an episode called Imprint. Showtime found Imprint to be so graphic and disturbing that they refused to air it – which is why the DVD release proudly stated that the movie was “Banned from Cable Broadcast.”

The slasher series Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is set to premiere on the Max streaming service in May
The television franchise that began with Pretty Little Liars on Freeform (starting back when the channel was known as ABC Family) and continued with two short-lived spin-offs on Freeform – Ravenswood and Pretty Little Liars: ThePerfectionists – moved over to the Max streaming service in 2022 with a new series called Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, which leaned further into horror territory. The second season of the new series is titled Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, and it has been announced that it’s set to make its Max premiere on May 9th!
This take on the Pretty Little Liars concept was created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring. It focuses on “new characters in the new fictional town of Millwood, PA and with multiple references to iconic horror movies (think Carrie and the original Halloween).” Season 1 had the following synopsis: Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in present day, a disparate group of teen girls — a brand-new set of Little Liars — find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and made to pay for the secret sin committed by their parents two decades ago… as well as their own.
The cast includes Bailee Madison as Imogen Adams, Chandler Kinney as Tabby Haworthe, Zaria as Faran Bryant, Maia Reficco as Noa Olivar, Bechtel as Karen/Kelly Beasley, Sharon Leal as Sidney Haworthe, Elena Goode as Marjorie Olivar, Eric Johnson as Sheriff Tom Beasley, Alex Aiono as Shawn Noble, Lea Salonga as Elodie Honrada, and Annabeth Gish as Dr. Sullivan. Jordan Gonzalez plays Ash Romero, who has been promoted from a recurring character to a series regular.
Aguirre-Sacasa and Bring have said that sources of inspiration for Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, which features a masked slasher called Bloody Rose, include Friday the 13th Part 2, Halloween II, Scream 2, and When a Stranger Calls.
Aguirre-Sacasa and Bring serve as executive producers with I. Marlene King, Michael Grassi, Leslie Morgenstein, and Gina Girolamo. Aguirre-Sacasa’s company Muckle Man Productions is producing Pretty Little Liars:Summer School with Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television. Muckle Man’s Jimmy Gibbons also receives a producing credit.

The iconic Michael J. Fox reflects on the status of being an 80s pop culture icon and how busting his butt to get to it differs from today’s celebrities.
This week has seen a lot of news content from Michael J. Fox since People Magazine celebrates their 50th anniversary with a profile on the star after they covered the heartbreaking revelation of his condition back in 1998. Fox is a big face of 80s pop culture thanks to his work in Family Ties, Teen Wolf, The Secret of My Success, and, of course, Back to the Future. According to Variety, Fox recalls when someone coined to him the phrase “80s famous” as he explained to People, “There’s an expression I referred to when they gave me an honorary Academy Award — somebody said to me the day before, they were talking about getting this award and being famous and they said ‘You’re ‘80s famous.’”
Fox expanded on this point of view, “I thought, ‘Wow, that’s cool.’ ‘80s famous. Right, we were different. We were tougher. We didn’t have social media, we didn’t have any of that crap. We were just famous. Left to our own resources. And it was an amazing time.” People followed up by asking if it’s harder being famous then than it is now and Fox replied, “Well, you had to be talented. That helped.” He continued, “We used to bust our ass, our acting muscles and watch other actors and sit around with other actors and talk about acting and talk about it. And now you’ve got people who just go like, ‘Who’s your sweater? What’s your sweater you’re wearing? And what’s that dance step?’ And you’re the most famous person in the world.”
For those who have not seen the documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, the Spin City star would recall traveling to Hollywood on his own from his home in Canada. He didn’t have a work permit, so acting was not only his ambition; it was the only way to put food on the table. In the film, Fox talked bout his first apartment, which was a tiny studio where his bathroom sink also served as his kitchen sink and was constantly chock full of unwashed dishes. He also spoke about having a sectional couch that he would occasionally sell section-by-section if he was in need of money, all while he was auditioning non-stop and worked bit roles until he got Family Ties. Then, the rest became history.
