Ripley star Andrew Scott didn’t judge or diagnose his character

Ripley star Andrew Scott didn’t judge or diagnose his character

Andrew Scott, who plays Tom Ripley in the Patricia Highsmith-inspired Netflix series Ripley, says he didn’t judge or diagnose his character

Tom Ripley is a character who has been fascinating readers and viewers for decades. Not only was he at the center of multiple novels written by Patricia Highsmith (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Ripley Under Ground, Ripley’s Game, The Boy Who Followed Ripley, and Ripley Underwater), but those novels have also received multiple adaptations: the 1960 film Purple Noon (where Ripley was played by Alain Delon), the 1977 film The American Friend (with Dennis Hopper as Ripley), the 2002 film Ripley’s Game (John Malkovich was Ripley in that one), the 2005 film Ripley Under Ground (with Barry Pepper as Ripley), a 1956 episode of the TV series Studio One, and perhaps most famously, the 1999 film The Talented Mr. Ripley, where Ripley was played by Matt Damon. Now Andrew Scott is taking on the role for Ripley, a limited series adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley that will be released through the Netflix streaming service on April 4th – and during an interview with Empire, Scott said he didn’t judge or try to diagnose his questionable character.

Schindler’s List Oscar winner Steven Zaillian has written and directed all eight episodes of Ripley. In the series, Tom Ripley, a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York, is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son Dickie Greenleaf to return home. Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.

Dickie Greenleaf is played by Johnny Flynn (The Lovers). Dakota Fanning (The Equalizer 3) plays Marge Sherwood, “an American living in Italy who suspects darker motives underlie Tom’s affability.”

Scott told Empire, “You have to be respectful (to the source material), but not too reverent, because otherwise there’s no point in doing this. You’ve got to put your own stamp on it. Some people will like this version, and some people will like other versions, and that’s okay. What you have to do is understand why this character remains so fascinating for people. I think to characterize him with any very particular neuroses would be a mistake. I never wanted to look at him as a psychopath. I didn’t want to label his sexuality too much. I didn’t want to just diagnose him with anything. The challenge was not to judge him.

Ripley was originally set up Showtime, where Zaillian was planning to use all of the Ripley novels written by Highsmith as “a road map to showcase Ripley’s transformation from con artist to serial killer” over the course of the on-going series. Now that it’s a limited series on Netflix, we’ll have to wait and see if there will be any further Ripley series to cover the stories told in the books beyond The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Ripley is a Showtime and Endemol Shine North America co-production, in association with Entertainment 360 and Filmrights. Zaillian serves as executive producer alongside Garrett Basch, Guymon Casady, Ben Forkner, Sharon Levy, and Philipp Keel of Diogenes. Scott is a producer on the series.

Are you a fan of the Tom Ripley stories, and will you be watching Ripley on Netflix? What do you think of what Andrew Scott had to say about the approach he took to the character? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

San Diego-Based Mental Wellness Center Park Mental Health Integrates Clients With Community to Create a Healthy Foundation

San Diego-based Park Mental Health Treatment of San Diego, a wellness facility located on El Cajon Boulevard, provides expert care to its clients in treating a variety of mental health issues. It integrates primary mental health treatment with a transitional care model, teaching clients to apply coping strategies with real-world application. Specifically, staff help clients create a healthy foundation by encouraging them to strengthen connections to family and the community by participating in employment and/or education initiatives.

With an emphasis on building healthy relationships, Park Mental Health looks for opportunities to improve their clients' lives. So when an opportunity arose to partner with a well-known nonprofit founded by family members of people diagnosed with mental illness, the organization was all in.

Leading up to its annual walk at Liberty Station, Park Mental Health is raising money to bring awareness to mental illness and most importantly, help the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) San Diego raise money to continue providing local resources to those who lack access.

NAMI advocates for access to services and treatment and supports research that raises awareness for families and individuals living with mental health conditions. This new, ongoing partnership will integrate invigorating resources into the lives of Park Mental Health clients.

“We decided to get involved as a company to raise awareness within staff, clients and families as we work towards breaking the stigma of mental health,” said Park Mental Health Program Director Mikayla Weathers. “Our clients are all individuals who could and do benefit from the resources NAMI provides.”

In addition to the partnership with NAMI, Park Mental Health is also working closely with Habitat for Humanity to provide on-the-job work experience for clients with no prior work experience to help them gain job readiness skills.

Each week, up to eight clients from Park Mental Health volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that helps individuals in local communities and around the world build or improve a place they can call home. “The partnership with Habitat for Humanity came about through me recognizing our clients' significant struggle with integrating back into the workplace following a mental health crisis,” Weathers said.

The collaboration is important in that it allows clients who aren’t yet ready to jump back into work get some on-the-job practice with the support of Park Mental Health staff and Habitat for Humanity supervisors in a more compassionate way.

“The intention for this program is to help clients give back and find purpose in volunteerism while also learning work skills, social skills, and many finer skills that come with having a job,” Weathers said. “So far, our clients have enjoyed obtaining this support...”

Opportunities such as these allow clients at Park Mental Health to actively practice progress and recovery while giving them a sense of purpose and adding more recent work experience to their resume.

Addiction affects a person’s mental, emotional, social, physical and spiritual well-being. In the beginning of a person’s alcohol and/or drug use, it can often seem like one of the few solutions, and/or options. Many clients have little support from their family, friends and employers because of their use and addiction, which frequently leads to isolation and alienation. “It often starts as a coping mechanism to sooth emotional and mental stress,” said Mike Gallager, Shoreline Recovery Center’s Clinical Director. “Substance abuse is complete neglect of one’s own issues.”

It tends to unravel from there.

Gallager began his sober journey a decade ago and has been working as a clinician for the last five years at the North County-based facility. Like several staff and admin working at Shoreline Recovery Center, Gallager was previously a sober living resident and knows the repercussions of addiction well.

“In treatment, the consequences of their relationship to alcohol or drugs far outweighs the benefits of what it was producing for them and that’s when they come to us,” he said.

Many clients when they arrive aren’t just suffering from the addiction to drugs and/or alcohol, but are in need of additional help due to the physical neglect of their bodies.

As we know, addiction doesn’t just have physical consequences since drugs affect the body and brain.

“If you’re neglecting your physical self, you’re also neglecting your mental, social and emotional capacity,” Gallager said. “A lot of the biochemical processes are a function of something that happens in the brain.”

When a person stops drinking the brain doesn’t know that immediately and neurotransmitters excite the body, changing the chemical makeup of the brain and how it functions.

At Shoreline, the men are educated on preventative measures such as choosing healthier lifestyle choices and life skills that lead to a healthier lifestyle, including medication management, holistic practices and therapy.

“Emotional and psychological effects also contribute to poor heart health, depression and anxiety,” Gallager said. “All systems in the body suffer.”

Substance abuse only exacerbates mental health issues and complicates treatment with stress and exposure to trauma are often linked with drug use and addiction. Over time an addict’s heart begins to deteriorate, contributing to initial effects of heart disease and cardiovascular issues, including hypertension, as well as depression.

“In the short term it can change the stress response, and how a person experiences panic,” Kubota said.

Long term effects include cirrhosis of liver, gastrointestinal issues, esophageal varices (issues in their esophagus and lining of the stomach), stomach cancer and diabetes and can turn fatal with myocarditis and strokes.

At Shoreline Recovery Center, clients are exposed to a therapeutic approach that provides the necessary guidance necessary to overcome addiction to drugs, alcohol and other harmful substance use disorders.

Ferrell Hospital and CareSimple Partner to Deliver Virtual Care to High-Need Patients in Southern Illinois
The program tackles chronic disease management in rural areas, leveraging CareSimple's RPM solution and seamlessly integrating with Ferrell's Epic EHR system for efficient care delivery.

CareSimple Ferrell Hospital Partnership

Remote patient monitoring for chronic conditions management

Ferrell Hospital and CareSimple are teaming up to bring innovative virtual care to high-need patients in Southern Illinois. This initiative tackles the challenge of chronic disease management in rural areas, where residents often face limited access to healthcare and experience high rates of emergency department visits and hospitalizations.

Ferrell Hospital will leverage CareSimple's RPM (Remote Patient Monitoring) solution. This technology provides patients with connected monitoring devices for use at home, while CareSimple's care management platform allows clinical staff to track patient progress and adjust care plans remotely. Initially, the program will focus on heart failure patients, aiming to improve post-discharge management and reduce hospital readmissions.

“We are so excited to be partnering with CareSimple to bring this new virtual care capability to our most at-risk patients to better manage their chronic condition and reduce their need for ER visits and hospitalization,” said Jessica Carter, Ferrell Hospital’s Director of Nursing. “The simplicity of the cellular-connected device usage for these patients gives us the exact fit we needed to ensure program adoption and engagement among our patients and clinical staff users.”

The Delta Regional Authority, dedicated to development in the Mississippi Delta Region, provided a grant that facilitated this program's launch.

"We're thrilled to see such collaborations bringing advanced care models to those who need them most," remarks Michael Nadeau, CEO and Founder of CareSimple. "The combined efforts of Ferrell Hospital, the Delta Regional Authority, and CareSimple make this a truly remarkable achievement."

Ferrell Hospital's RPM program boasts a seamless integration with their existing Epic EHR system and is scheduled to go live on April 1st.

Attiva by Reveal Lasers LLC

Skin Structure Enhancement with Targeted iRF Energy

Reveal Lasers LLC is proud to announce the launch of Attiva, a groundbreaking, mini cannula-delivered intelligent radiofrequency (iRF) treatment designed to enhance the structure of the skin, on both the face and body with unprecedented precision and efficacy.

"Things in aesthetics change on a day-to-day basis, and what excites me about Attiva is that it’s a new device that is going to be more precise for enhancing the structure of the skin,” says Erika Barry, NP-C, known as InjectorBunny on Instagram. “It has an easy-to-use mini cannula that goes under the skin and allows us to target areas of the face and body precisely. I can treat patients with Attiva in conjunction with injectable fillers and neuromodulators, with no worries about affecting the product. It’s simply enhancing the product and overall patient results. Attiva truly bridges the gap between cosmetic enhancement, using injectables, with surgical intervention.”

Attiva sets itself apart with its innovative technology, delivering radiofrequency energy beneath the skin's surface with a cannula to generate substantial heat, without compromising skin integrity. Unlike traditional treatments, the Attiva system triggers an immediate contraction of collagen fibers and stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin, resulting in visible, long-lasting results.

"This treatment has changed the way I address age-related concerns with my patients," adds Dr. Jack Zamora, Plastic Surgeon in Denver, Colorado. "It's an in-office treatment that can be performed with simple, local anesthesia and virtually no downtime. I’ve performed hundreds of procedures at this point with no complications and patients are seeing results almost instantly. This technology is the best that I have seen in a very long time."

Utilizing continuous, fractional, and sequential radiofrequency currents, Attiva uniformly heats subdermal tissue layers, all while closely monitoring skin temperatures with an FDA-approved thermal imaging camera. This ensures precise control throughout the treatment, allowing providers to tailor thermal diffusion based on individual needs and skin concerns.

Attiva's Double Temperature Control system, equipped with a microcannula and external thermal control camera, further enhances treatment safety and efficacy. Providers can confidently administer treatments knowing that both internal tissue and skin surface temperatures are continuously monitored and regulated.

"We're thrilled to introduce Attiva to the market," said Bob Daley, CEO at Reveal Lasers LLC. "With its advanced technology and unparalleled precision, Attiva represents a new frontier in radiofrequency treatments, offering patients visible, contoured results with minimal downtime."
