Interview: V/H/S/85 Directors talk breaking tapes, diving into home movies, and creative freedom

David Bruckner, Mike P Nelson, and Natasha Kermani discuss their new anthology film and how they pulled off the 80’s look.

The V/H/S franchise has become a behemoth over the years. What started as a quaint series of shorts has become an annual tradition for horror fans. And while not every segment always hits, the ones that do leave a lasting impression. And V/H/S/85 (here’s our review) is no different, planting itself firmly in the decade of decadence, the 80’s feels like a place this series was made for. I was fortunate enough to sit down with directors David Bruckner (Hellraiser 2022), Mike P. Nelson (the Wrong Turn reboot) and Natasha Kermani (Lucky) for an interview to discuss how they got involved with the series. We go over how the stories are concocted, just how much collaboration there is between the segments, and how they get that unique look.

V/H/S/85 plot: An ominous mixtape blends never before seen snuff footage with nightmarish newscasts and disturbing home video to create a surreal, analog mashup of the forgotten 80s.

Bruckner had this to say about the project: “The V/H/S series is a continued love letter to found footage nastiness and the mad variety of anthology horror. Having helmed a segment of the OG film, I’m beyond excited to be back behind the camera in V/H/S/85, alongside some of my very favorite voices in the genre.

V/H/S/85 IS STREAMING ON SHUDDER ON OCTOBER 6TH, 2023.

Local Retail Outlets for Legal Marijuana May Be Associated With Alcohol Co-Use Among High School Students: New Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs Report

Local Retail Outlets for Legal Marijuana May Be Associated With Alcohol Co-Use Among High School Students: New Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs Report

Marijuana

Marijuana

Given the increasing trend toward legalizing marijuana in many states, there is growing concern that underage youth may find the drug easier to access. In fact, a recent study reported in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs suggests that in areas with local retail availability of legalized marijuana, high school students are more likely to use marijuana and alcohol together, as well as alcohol alone.

“Greater retail availability may ‘normalize’ marijuana use for young people, even if they are unable to purchase marijuana directly from retail businesses, and retail sales may introduce greater access through social sources,” says study lead author Sharon O’Hara, Dr.P.H., lecturer at the University of California Berkeley School of Public Health and associate research scientist at the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation.

For their research, O’Hara and colleagues used info from the 2010-2011 and 2018-2019 California Healthy Kids Surveys of 9th and 11th graders in 554 public high schools in 38 California cities. Students were asked how often they used marijuana and alcohol over the previous 30 days.

The researchers also calculated the density of marijuana and cannabis retail outlets in each area (the number of outlets per square mile within the city limits).

Among the full sample, O’Hara and colleagues found a significant interaction between recreational marijuana legalization and marijuana outlet density, indicating a greater increase in the likelihood of alcohol use and co-use of alcohol and marijuana in cities with higher retail availability of cannabis after the passage of recreational marijuana legalization. A positive association between recreational marijuana legalization and marijuana use was found in cities at all levels of marijuana outlet density.

That outcome was expected, but a closer look at the data found some surprising results.

“We were most surprised by the effects of recreational marijuana legalization on the co-use of alcohol and marijuana by subgroups of alcohol users versus cannabis users,” says O’Hara. “We found significant positive associations between recreational marijuana legalization and co-use for past-30-day drinkers but significant inverse associations between recreational marijuana legalization and co-use among past-30-day marijuana users.”

The researchers hypothesize that, since its legalization, marijuana use has been increasing in the general population of California adolescents, while alcohol use continues to decrease.

"Given that, among the full sample of high school students, the effect of recreational marijuana legalization was strongest in the cities with relatively high marijuana outlet density; attention should be paid to policies that limit the retail availability of marijuana," says O’Hara.

“Regulatory policies can be considered at the state level and in local jurisdictions with zoning authority over retail marijuana businesses,” she says. “So, even if your state legalizes recreational marijuana, you may have the ability to regulate the number and location of retail marijuana businesses using local land use authority.”

Your Lucky Day trailer: Angus Cloud gambles with lives for a lottery ticket in Daniel Brown’s intense new thriller

Daniel Brown’s Your Lucky Day trailer starring Euphoria’s Angus Cloud depicts an intense final performance from the late actor.

Before Angus Cloud’s death at age 25 in late July, the Euphoria actor completed work on Daniel Brown’s Your Lucky Day, an intense-looking thriller featuring Cloud as a trivial criminal whose plan to steal a winning lottery ticket spirals out of control. In the Your Lucky Day trailer, Brown depicts how a split decision to seize an opportunity to change your future can turn deadly.

In the promo, Cloud’s desperate character, Sterling, spontaneously decides to rob a lottery winner at a local convenience store. As the conflict intensifies and push comes to shove, Sterling does the unthinkable by killing a rookie cop, landing himself in a position to take hostages or risk incarceration. With $156 million on the line, Sterling and the survivors of the incident enter a pack to split the money after covering Sterling’s tracks. “Nobody ever got rich without doing no crime,” Sterling says in the trailer as six strangers debate the morality and consequences of accepting money for their silence.

Still, the thing about killing a cop is they protect their own. “They don’t arrest cop killers, they execute them,” one of the survivors says in the trailer, warning Sterling about a murder squad of uniforms inevitably heading their way. As walls close around them, hostage group members take matters into their own hands, begging the question: Who will survive and claim the ultimate prize?

“Movies are for everyone, so the goal was to make a thrilling, fun and entertaining movie that could also be about something deeper — a look at one of those larger-than-life moments that we all hope for and ask, ‘Is this really worth it?’” Brown said in a statement.

Cloud leads Your Lucky Day as his final on-screen performance before his untimely passing earlier this year. Elliot Knight, Jessica Garza, Sterling Beaumon, Mousa Hussein Kraish, Spencer Garrett, and Jason O’Mara also star. Dan Brown directs from a script he wrote with Well Go USA releasing the film in theaters on November 10, with a digital release set for November 14.

What do you think about today’s Your Lucky Day trailer? How far would you go for a winning lottery ticket? Let us know in the comments section below.

R.I.P.: Night of the Demons 2 star Zoe Trilling has passed away at 57

R.I.P.: Night of the Demons 2 star Zoe Trilling has passed away at 57

It has been confirmed that Night of the Demons 2 star Zoe Trilling (a.k.a. Geri Betzler) passed away at the too-young age of 57

Geralyn Marie Betzler worked on several movies throughout the ’80s and ’90s. On her first feature, 1985’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, she was credited by her full birth name, but as her screen acting career went on she would take credit as either Geri Betzler or Zoe Trilling – and it’s that second name that most fans seem to know her by. Among her credits are episodes of Guiding Light, 21 Jump Street, and Married… with Children, and the films Amityville Horror: The Evil Escapes, They Came from Outer Space, The Borrower, Dr. Giggles, Night Terrors, Hellbound, and Leprechaun 3 – but her most popular role may be in the 1994 horror comedy Night of the Demons 2, where she stole the show as bad girl Shirley Finnerty. Sadly, just as Night of the Demons 2 is reaching Blu-ray courtesy of Scream Factory, it has been confirmed that Betzler / Trilling passed away last month at the age of 57.

Here’s an obituary from Star Tribune: Geri was born on May 27, 1966 in Wausau, WI, and died on September 8, 2023 in Vista, CA. Geri was a remarkable child and a brilliant, determined, independent woman. At age 18 she moved from Minnesota to Los Angeles, CA to pursue a career in acting and dance. She supported herself by working at a bakery and setting up a distributorship in LA for a small fresh juice company, known today as Naked Juice. She also taught Aerobics in a number of studios, including Jane Fonda’s. At the same time she enrolled in acting and ballet classes. She began her acting career in 1985 with TV roles including a part as Lacey Bauer in the TV series Guiding Light. Throughout her career, she continued to perform guest roles in TV series and theater productions in Los Angeles and New York. She is most know for her roles in horror productions such as Genie in Night Terrors and Shirley in Night of the Demons. She left the film industry and became a choreographer at American ballroom in New York City, as well as a yoga instructor and personal trainer in both NY and LA. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Norma and Frank Theisen, Agnes and Frank Betzler; step-father, Jerry Ruona; aunts and uncles, Sherry (Jim) Bias, Mary Fayfield, Janie (Mike) McNamara, Willard (Birdie) Betzler, and Violet (Hershel) Bachman. Geri is survived by her mother, Phoebe Ruona, Minneapolis; brother, Mike Betzler, Minneapolis; uncle, Bob Fayfield, Shorewood; step-siblings, Karie Ruona, Minneapolis; Mark Ruona, Minneapolis; Julie Ruona, Clearwater, FL,; numerous cousins, and lifelong friends: Loretta Falcone, San Jose, CA: Michael Libow, Los Angeles, CA; Don Schneider, New York City, and father, Larry Betzler, Chula Vista, CA. A private internment will be held at Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Betzler’s Night of the Demons 2 director Brian Trenchard-Smith paid tribute to her on Facebook: I am sorry to report the passing of Zoe Trilling who gave such a standout performance in my Night of the Demons 2. Only 57, gone too soon. I remember her skill as an actor, her sense of humor and her warm luminous personality. Cast and crew always had a good time when she was on set. In my view, and that of several directors, she deserved a much bigger career. She was an undiscovered gem. My condolences to all who like myself and my wife had the privilege of knowing Zoe Trilling.

Original Night of the Demons director Kevin Tenney also posted about her: Best known to horror fans for her roles in Night Terrors, Leprechaun 3, and Night of the Demons 2, Zoe Trilling was also part of what we in the industry call a Loop Group, a small collection of actors who add background dialogue and crowd noises to finished films in post production. I worked with her in this capacity on my film Pinocchio’s Revenge. She was even prettier in person than she was on film, and much more petite than I expected. She was also genuinely sweet and down to earth as well as being massively talented. When we needed a devastated mother to tell our lead actress over the phone that her son was dead, Zoe broke down into tears, sobbing uncontrollably as she delivered the news, a performance much stronger and more emotional than I could’ve hoped for from a disembodied voice that would be barely audible in the final mix. She was the very epitome of a seasoned professional, in spite of her young age. We tried desperately to locate her to do an interview or commentary track for the new Blu-ray release of Night of the Demons 2, but she was absent from social media of any kind. And now I find that she passed away just last month right here in California. So, here’s to you, Zoe. Gone too soon and too young to be gone, you’ll be sorely missed by your fans and colleagues alike.

I haven’t seen all of Geri Betzler / Zoe Trilling’s screen performances, but I have seen several of them, and her performance in Night of the Demons 2 is one that always stuck with me. I expected to see her in a lot more films after that, but sadly, it wasn’t to be.

Our sincere condolences go out to Geri Betzler / Zoe Trilling’s family, friends, and fans.

Ergonomic Tacepo Device Gives New Hope to Flatulence Sufferers
The disposable insert makes loud flatulence nearly inaudible

For people who have struggled with uncontrollable gas, a phenomenon that increases with age, dietary changes, and intestinal issues, there is new hope on the horizon–Tacepo. This innovative device not only helps flatulence sufferers build confidence but can also add an element of novelty to an otherwise embarrassing situation.

“At Tacepo, we understand the challenges that individuals facing excessive gas encounter, and we’re proud to introduce a range of products designed to restore confidence and minimize discomfort,” said a company representative. “Tacepo wearers can regain control of life without the fear of awkward moments or unwanted reactions when in business meetings, in restaurants or other important settings.”

Tacepo is available in four variants to suit user preferences:

  • Tacepo: The standard version of the device is engineered to deafen the sound of loud flatulence
  • TacepoPig and TacepoDuck: For those who enjoy a touch of humor, TacepoPig and TacepoDuck offer a quirky twist. When wearing, flatulence will mimic the corresponding animal's sound, turning potentially embarrassing moments into lighthearted ones
  • TacepoPouch: This product is a “secret weapon” against sound and smell, when combined with the standard Tacepo

On average, flatulence can produce sounds up to 70 decibels. With Tacepo, sound is reduced to just 2 decibels, making it nearly as discreet as a quiet exhalation. Whether users are in an important meeting or at a social gathering, Tacepo can help them carry on with confidence, knowing that their flatulence won't steal the spotlight.

With Tacepo’s ergonomic design and discreet handles, the device will stay securely in place until removed by the wearer. The device is designed for single-use only; reusing it may lead to complications, as it cannot be fully cleaned, potentially harboring harmful bacteria.

Tacepo is recommended for use during moments when involuntary flatulence could impact an individual’s reputation. Typically, such situations last no more than two to four hours, but the device is designed to stay comfortably in place for up to 24 hours.

Tacepo invites all people seeking increased confidence to join the brand in embracing a life free from the fear of flatulence.

In addition to offering discounts on bulk orders, Tacepo also accepts requests for custom sizing, colors, and designs. The requests will be posted on the brand’s website for voting.
