The original script for Barbie was 147 pages long

The original script for Barbie was 147 pages long

The original script for Barbie was 147 pages long and Mattel Films head Robbie Brenner didn’t quite know what to make of it.

Barbie currently stands as the highest-grossing movie of the year with $1.38 billion worldwide, but few imagined that the film would be that successful. According to an article from The New York Times, the original script for Barbie was 147 pages long and Mattel Films head Robbie Brenner didn’t quite know what to make of it.

When the script did land in Ms. Brenner’s email, it was 147 pages — the length of a Quentin Tarantino film, epic by Hollywood standards,” reads the New York Times article. “She closed her office door and started reading. ‘It was like going on this crazy ride,’ she recalled. It broke rules, including the so-called fourth wall, addressing the audience directly. It poked fun at Mattel.

However, Brenner knew Barbie was something special and immediately took it to Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz. “I’ve read a lot of scripts, and this is so different,” she told Kriez. “It’s special. You don’t get this feeling many times in an entire career.” After reading the Barbie script for himself, Kreiz agreed. “It was deep, provoking, unconventional and imaginative,” he said. “It was everything I was hoping it would be.

Margot Robbie was one of the few who had a vision for how successful Barbie would become, as she actually predicted that it would gross $1 billion when she pitched it to the studio. “I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director,” Robbie said. “And then I gave a series of examples like, ‘dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg,’ that and that, that and that – pretty much naming anything that’s been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years. And I was like, ‘And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig.’ And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?!

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie features a star-studded cast which includes Margot Robbie as the title character and Ryan Gosling as Ken. When Barbie suddenly begins to worry about her own mortality, she goes on a journey of self-discovery to the real world, accompanied by a love-lorn Ken. Considering how well the film is doing, you can almost certainly expect a sequel to be announced once the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have concluded, but it was revealed that neither Robbie, Gosling, or Gerwig have deals in place to return for a sequel. Barbie was released on Digital on September 5th.

The Nun II Review

0
The Nun II Review

While they change the formula slightly, The Nun II mostly treads similar ground to the original and has excessive jump scares.

PLOT: 1956 – France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit follows Sister Irene as she once again comes face-to-face with Valak, the demon nun.

REVIEW: Given that I was one of about a dozen people who really enjoyed the first Nun when it was released, I was pleasantly surprised when a sequel was announced. Like Annabelle before, The Nun had some great elements that didn’t come together completely. And also like Annabelle: Creation, The Nun II looks to course correct to make it into a more viable franchise. So gone is Franco Nero as the old Priest; instead, we have a relatively young (and predominantly female) cast. This already helps to separate it from the original and gives it a makeover. But you may have to look elsewhere if you want something that completely reinvents the wheel.

The Nun II follows the first film’s events, with Maurice, AKA Frenchie, possessed by the demon and making his way across Europe in search of something mysterious. Sister Irene (Farmiga) is informed that the demon nun Valak is still alive, and she is the only person the church has to fight her. I always felt that Taissa Farmiga was a little stiff initially as she contended with the old-timey speak, but she’s much improved here. It was nice to see her take her place as a strong character after all the struggles she went through. She’s no longer the meek little nun from the first film and is much more on top of things. I also really enjoyed Storm Reid, even if her character is a bit undeserved.

I was extremely excited to see Jonas Bloquet’s Maurice return, as his chemistry with Farmiga is great. I really love what they do with his character, as they could have easily excised him and used a different excuse to involve Valak in the proceedings. I also think setting the film in a former monastery turned boarding school was a brilliant decision. This allowed for so many great visuals while providing a host of potential victims, which helped elevate the tension. There was even a death early on that I wasn’t expecting, which seemed to raise the stakes. Unfortunately, this almost feels like a false promise, as the bloodshed is quite light for the rest of the film. In fact, I was shocked to see that this one was Rated R as it could have easily earned a PG-13 with a few cuts. I actually have a hard time thinking of anything in this that I haven’t seen on Cable TV.

If you’re not a fan of jump scares, then you may struggle with this one as it’s essentially Jump Scare City. It gets to the point that they immediately start building tension for the next one as soon as one scare happens. This works quite cleverly a few times but gets really tired after a while. Had they done just a few less, it would have left more of an impact. And I feel like I need to give a special shoutout to Bonnie Aarons, who plays the titular Nun. Aarons is currently involved with a lawsuit against the studio, accusing them of unfairly compensating her for her image. Given how important Aaron’s visage is to the film, this is an absolute travesty. I know I’m rooting for Ms. Aarons, as these films wouldn’t be the same without her unique look.

It’s been pretty impressive to see where they’ve taken the series that started as an ancillary villain of another movie. I wouldn’t be upset if this were the end of the character as this both wrapped up loose ends from the first while providing a satisfying conclusion. But if you weren’t a fan of the first film, I can’t imagine this one changing your mind. This follows many of the same beats as the original and doesn’t do much outside of what you would expect. The CGI is improved in spots, but some moments will still have you shaking your head. However, if you’re just going into this wanting some tension-filled jump scares and great visuals, there are worse ways to spend a Friday night.

THE NUN II is IN THEATERS EVERYWHERE ON SEPTEMBER 8TH, 2023.

Kevin Williamson: Pay Neve Campbell what she’s worth

Scream writer Kevin Williamson says there should be no question as to whether or not to pay Neve Campbell to return as Sidney Prescott.

Hello, Sidney…As portrayed by Neve Campbell, Sidney Prescott was one of the great final girls in slasher movie history. No boyfriend, freaky film student or long-lost half-brother could knock her off. For that, she was easily the face – not to be confused with the ghostface – of the Scream franchise. And just like the fans, Neve Campbell knew her worth. It turns out, the studio didn’t. Now, Scream writer Kevin Williamson has come to her defense, saying she was owed every penny she asked for.

Speaking on the Happy Horror Time podcast (as per IndieWire), Williamson – who wrote the first two Screams as well as Scream 4 – said that Neve Campbell deserves the pay bump. “I totally respect her opinion…I know exactly where she’s coming from, I know her well. I love and adore her and that’s what she did. It’s right for her. I love everyone involved in Scream and all I can say is, pay her the money. That’s what I would do, I would give her the money.”

The Scream franchise took a few big risks with the sixth installment, not only nixing Neve Campbell’s Sidney but also moving the action to New York City. But the movie did extremely well, pulling in nearly $170 million worldwide and proving to be the highest-grossing movie in the franchise. In the end, no matter how much we love Neve Campbell and want to see Sidney Prescott, we may have to accept that neither will return.

In pulling for the return of Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott, Williamson added, “I’m sure there’s a number they can agree on that will make them both happy so hopefully one day they will figure that all out.” But it’s not just Williamson in her corner. Scream and Scream VI directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett also want her to reprise her iconic character, adamantly saying, “We’d never give up on her. We love Neve, and we love Sidney. So we’d love to be able to make another movie with her, and we’re not giving up.”

Do you think Neve Campbell would return as Sidney Prescott for another Scream movie if the circumstances worked in her favor? Can the franchise really work without her? Give us your take below!

Health outcomes in 1,369 cats fed vegan or meat-based diets

Seven general indicators of illness were studies, as well as 22 of the most common feline health disorders.

Cats are carnivores, or so we thought. However, a major new study has found that cats are healthier, when fed vegan diets. The study, just published in leading scientific journal PLOS ONE, is the largest such study to date. It resulted from an international collaboration led by veterinary Professor Andrew Knight (UK) and co-authored by statisticians Dr Alexander Bauer (Germany) and Hazel Brown (UK). It studied 1,369 cats fed vegan or meat-based pet food, for at least one year. Cats fed vegan diets had better health outcomes for each of seven general health indicators studied.

First, differences between diet groups in age, sex, neutering (desexing) status and primary location (outdoor vs. indoor) were all controlled for statistically. Next, risk reductions were calculated for cats of average age and characteristics. For average cats fed vegan diets, risk reductions were:

  • increased veterinary visits (possibly indicating illness) - 7% reduction
  • medication use - 15% reduction
  • progression onto a medical diet (after being fed a vegan or meat-based diet) - 55% reduction
  • reported veterinary assessment of being unwell - 4% reduction
  • reported veterinary assessment of more severe illness - 8% reduction
  • pet guardian opinion of more severe illness - 23% reduction.
  • Additionally, the number of health disorders per unwell cat decreased by 16%.

No reductions were statistically significant, but collectively they reveal a strong trend. Additionally, the prevalence of 22 of the most common feline health disorders was studied. Forty two percent of cats fed meat, and 37% of those fed vegan diets suffered from at least one health disorder. 15 disorders were most common in cats fed meat, and seven most common in cats fed vegan diets.

Veterinary Professor of Animal Welfare Andrew Knight, the study leader, stated:

"For every single general health indicator studied, these cats had better health outcomes when fed vegan diets. This represents a strong and consistent trend. It indicates that pet food manufacturers are now designing and creating vegan pet foods to include all necessary nutrients, but with fewer of the dietary hazards that are prevalent within meat-based pet foods. Cats consuming vegan diets have better health outcomes, as a result."

These results concur with those of other, recent studies. In 2021, leading veterinary nutritionist Dr Sarah Dodd and colleagues published a study of 1,026 cats, of whom 187 were fed vegan diets. Cats fed vegan diets were more frequently reported by their guardians to be in very good health. They had more ideal body condition scores, and were less likely to suffer from gastrointestinal and liver disorders, than cats fed meat. No health disorders were more likely, for cats fed vegan diets. These studies are available via www.SustainablePetFood.info > health.

Prof. Knight stated:

"This offers exciting potential to improve not only feline health, but also to address the very significant environmental impacts of the livestock sector created through pet food production. However, to safeguard the health of our feline friends, it is important that pet guardians feed only commercial vegan pet foods labelled as nutritionally complete, produced by reputable companies with good standards."

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters teaser trailer unveiled as Godzilla series gets a premiere date

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters teaser trailer unveiled as Godzilla series gets a premiere date

A teaser trailer has arrived for the Godzilla TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters – which also now has a November premiere date!

Last month, Apple TV+ unveiled several images from their upcoming Godzilla series, while revealing that the show is going to be called Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Now a teaser trailer has arrived online (you can watch it in the embed above), and along with that comes a premiere date announcement – and I’m glad to see that the premiere date is closer than I expected it to be! The first two episodes of the ten episode run will be available to watch as of Friday, November 17th. The remaining eight episodes will be released on a weekly basis, one every Friday, through January 12th.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is the latest chapter in Legendary Entertainment’s Monsterverse series, which currently consists of Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, and the Netflix animated series Skull Island.

The show is set after “the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real” (as seen in Godzilla 2014). It tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga – spanning three generations – reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.

Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski star alongside Godzilla, who is said to have a “very important role” in the series.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is coming our way from Legendary Television. Black, Fraction, and Shakman are executive producing the series with Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell from Safehouse Pictures, as well as Andy Goddard, Brad Van Arragon, and Andrew Colville. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive produce on behalf of Toho Co., Ltd., the owner of the Godzilla character. The series was co-developed by Chris Black (Star Trek: Enterprise) and Matt Fraction (Hawkeye). Matt Shakman (WandaVision) directed the first two episodes.

Beyond this show, Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard is working on a follow-up to that film called Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Trinity Health Revolutionizes Nursing Practice Through Virtual Connected Care

Trinity Health Revolutionizes Nursing Practice Through Virtual Connected Care
Pilots showing care delivery model making inroads into the challenges posed by the workforce crisis and increasing engagement at the same time.

Addressing the nursing workforce crisis remains a critical challenge for health systems, with a predicted shortage of 9 million nurses worldwide by 2030. Trinity Health, one of the nation's largest not-for-profit health systems, is rolling out a first-of-its-kind care delivery model to address these challenges, improve care delivery, increase job satisfaction and create career pathways for nurses at any stage of their career. By the end of September, the model will be operational in 38 nursing units in Trinity Health hospitals across eight states.

Trinity Health Virtual Connected CareTM is a true team approach to patient-centered care and uses technology to support direct care staff and increase patient interaction. Patients receiving care through this delivery model can expect to be treated by a direct care registered nurse, an on-site nursing assistant or LPN, and a registered nurse who remotes into the patient's room virtually. The team functions as a cohesive and highly connected unit to deliver comprehensive care. The virtual nurses are located on local campuses as opposed to an off-site call center and have access to complete medical records and even the ability to perform detailed examinations via advanced camera technology. The presence of an experienced virtual nurse provides invaluable mentoring and support to the direct care nurses, especially those who are new graduates.

"Nursing resources are scarce and will only get worse. We needed to act swiftly. The workforce shortage has crippled the traditional model of hospital nursing, which is no longer optimal in some environments," said Gay Landstrom, Ph.D., RN, chief nursing officer. "Our innovative care delivery model supports nurses doing what they love most, working at the top of their license to provide excellent professional care to their patients."

The model serves as a key market differentiator that addresses the nursing workforce crisis head-on. Moreover, it accommodates caregivers at various stages of their careers, providing a stable and predictable working environment and helping to build a strong pipeline of caregivers to meet future health care needs.

"We recognize the imperative need for novel solutions, and we are taking a bold step toward revolutionizing nursing practice," said Murielle Beene, DNP, RN-BC, FAAN, SVP and chief health-informatics officer. "This model not only confronts the imminent challenges we face as clinicians, through creativity and ingenuity but also enhances care delivery and bolsters job satisfaction —paving the way for the nurses of tomorrow. It is truly a pioneering strategy with a veritable team care model that will help us inspire a new era of nursing excellence."

CLS Health Acquires Southeast Houston Cardiology, Expanding Cardiology Services
The acquisition enhances patient care and extends CLS Health's geographical reach in the Houston area.

Southeast Houston Cardiology & CLS Health

CLS Health completes acquisition of Southeast Houston Cardiology

CLS Health, formerly known as Clear Lake Specialties, has finalized the acquisition of Southeast Houston Cardiology, a leading cardiology practice. This move is part of CLS Health's strategic expansion in the Houston metropolitan area and comes shortly after its recent merger with Clear Lake Cardiovascular Consultants.

Strategic Alignment and Patient Care

"The acquisition of Southeast Houston Cardiology allows us to offer specialized cardiac care to our growing patient base of over 80,000. It aligns perfectly with our strategic priorities of geographical expansion and providing comprehensive healthcare," says Dr. Mohammad Baba, President of CLS Health. "In a market that is being invaded by outside venture capitalists and insurance companies, CLS Health allows our community's doctors to preserve their independence and their ability to provide excellent healthcare."

"Partnering with CLS Health allows us to better serve the Houston community. It's a positive step for both practices," says Dr. David Hamer, Founder of Southeast Houston Cardiology.

Operational Excellence and Community Impact

Immediate plans include utilizing CLS Health's resources to improve operations, offer more in-house ancillary services, and connect patients to a larger network. "Both CLS Health and Southeast Houston Cardiology have a long-standing commitment to community healthcare," said Dr. Dweik, Vice President. "With this acquisition, we're putting specialized, compassionate cardiac care within easy reach of those who live and work in these rapidly growing communities."

Future Outlook and New Facilities

This acquisition comes on the heels of CLS Health's newest 100,000-square-foot planned addition to its main campus at 600 North Kobayashi Road, Webster, which will include a cardiac catheterization laboratory and an ambulatory surgery center. "The new facilities at our main campus and this acquisition are synergistic steps to provide comprehensive cardiac care across the Greater Houston area," added Shahbaz Rabbani, Director of Operations, CLS Health.

Leadership in Cardiology

Combined with the prior merger with Clear Lake Cardiovascular Consultants, these strategic moves position CLS Health at the forefront of Houston's cardiology footprint. "With more than 15 providers, Cardiology has become CLS Health's second-largest service line, only behind primary care," noted Shahbaz Rabbani, Director of Operations, CLS Health.

About CLS Health

CLS Health, formerly known as Clear Lake Specialties, is a leading multispecialty group practice founded with the mission to provide comprehensive and specialized medical care in the Greater Houston area. Our team comprises over 160+ physicians and allied health professionals who practice across 23 locations, offering medical services in 30+ specialties. For more information, visit cls.health.
