The Great canceled by Hulu after three seasons

The Great canceled by Hulu after three seasons

The Great has been canceled by Hulu after three seasons, bringing the Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult led series to a close.

Son of a bitch. What’s the opposite of Huzzah? Deadline reports that Hulu has canceled The Great after three seasons. The series was a satirical black comedy-drama that chronicled the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia’s history. Equal parts bizarre, touching, and downright hilarious, The Great has been one of my favourite recent series so it’s tough to see it go.

The Great starred Elle Fanning as Catherine and Nicholas Hoult as Emperor Peter III, her depraved and dangerous husband. The third season was released on Hulu in May and, like the previous two, received critical acclaim.

Here’s the official logline for The Great season 3: “Catherine and Peter attempt to make their marriage work after some seemingly insurmountable problems. Peter witnessed his own attempted murder at Catherine’s hands and she also imprisoned all of his friends. On top of this, Peter is at a loose end playing First Husband to Catherine’s reign, so he busies himself with fathering, hunting and salty culinary ventures. But they’re not enough to keep him contented as visions of his late father, get in his head about his failures as Peter the Great’s son. Catherine the Great starts making a name for herself beyond her borders and inspired by a visit from the US ambassador, sets up a conference where peasants, nobles and merchants can all give their input on developing a new Russia. She learns that even the best political leaders sometimes need to make compromises in order to progress.

Series creator Tony McNamara had told The Hollywood Reporter’s TV’s Top 5 podcast in 2021 that he didn’t know exactly how long the series would last. “I know a whole bunch of events that are interesting that you can hang things on,” McNamara said. “At the moment, I try not to look too far ahead. At the end of season two, I didn’t quite know what season three was. I like not knowing what comes next. If you have a show with a great ensemble and a great bunch of characters, you can invent as you go for a while.

While it’s a bummer that The Great has been canceled, the third season did provide would could be seen as a natural end point. Is there more story that could be told? Definitely, but it didn’t exactly leave things hanging and it shouldn’t stop you from watching the series.

Bonnie Wright says Ginny Weasley’s lack of screen time in Harry Potter movies was disappointing

Bonnie Wright says Ginny Weasley’s lack of screen time in Harry Potter movies was disappointing

Bonnie Wright says that Ginny Weasley’s lack of screen time in the Harry Potter franchise was disappointing.

Ginny Weasley was a prominent supporting character in the Harry Potter novels, but the big screen adaptations didn’t exactly do justice to the character. While appearing on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast (via Entertainment Weekly), Bonnie Wright expressed disappointment at how her character was handled in the movies.

I definitely feel there was anxiety toward performing and doing the best thing as my character built,” Wright said. “Like, Oh gosh, will I do justice to this character that people love? So that was always hard to do, especially when, inevitably, a lot of the scenes of every character were chopped down from the book to the film. So you didn’t really have as much to show in the film. Sometimes that was a little disappointing because there were parts of the character that just didn’t get to come through because there weren’t the scenes to do that.

Bonnie Wright made her first appearance as Ginny Weasley in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone when she was just nine years old. She wasn’t even supposed to have any lines until director Chris Columbus insisted. “The actual first line I had in the film, which was one line, was given to me on the day, [and director Chris Columbus] was like, ‘I think you need a line,’ which is my ‘good luck’ to Harry,” Wright said.

At the time, J.K. Rowling was still in the midst of writing the novels, so Wright wasn’t aware that her character would go on to have a bigger role and end up marrying Harry Potter. As far as raising concerns about her character, Wright explained that “there was no room for much change in those scripts. There were a million executives going through them all. I think what I maybe took, which I don’t take so much to heart now, is I kind of felt that maybe my anxiety was about, Oh, I’m going to be seen as badly portraying this character, rather than later realizing that I wasn’t really given the opportunity to do that. So it wasn’t really my fault, exactly.

While the Harry Potter movies may not have had the foresight to develop Ginny Weasley properly, perhaps the Harry Potter TV series will be able to flesh out the character. The plan is for each season of the series to focus on one novel, which will leave plenty of screen time for all involved, even Ginny.

The Black Demon sequel being discussed after the movie held Amazon’s number-one streaming spot for seven days

The Black Demon sequel being discussed after the movie held Amazon’s number-one streaming spot for seven days

A sequel to The Black Demon is being discussed after the movie held the number-one spot on Amazon’s streaming rankings for seven days.

Despite facing stiff competition from major studio movies such as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Cocaine Bear, one low-budget shark movie has reigned above them all. The Black Demon held the number-one spot on Amazon’s streaming rankings for seven days, which has prompted discussion of a sequel.

The Black Demon is a shark thriller with a supernatural edge that follows a family stranded on a crumbling oil rig in Baja facing off against a vengeful megalodon shark. Produced for just under $10 million, The Black Demon may not have received the best reviews upon release, but it’s clear that there’s an audience for the movie.

No one has ever seen a genre shark movie with a Latino bent,” Black Demon producer Javier Chapa told THR. “That’s where we saw the opportunity, given our company’s ethos is all about really supporting people of color on both sides of the camera — but also filling a highly underserved need in our community.” Chapa added, “That the Latino community doesn’t get a lot of support on films, it’s shocking to me. They are the most aggressive moviegoing audience, more than any other cohort. And to me, it’s the million-dollar question: why aren’t more people making films that are universal but that are by and for that community?

Whether the success of The Black Demon will translate to a sequel remains to be seen, but producers say there has been talk, but that nothing can move forward until the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes conclude.

Our own Cody Hamman reviewed The Black Demon earlier this year and called it “middle-of-the-road entertainment” that should have embraced the cheese rather than try to be so serious. “The problem is, if The Black Demon was going to have moments that are so cheesy, it should have leaned further into that cheesiness and been sillier overall,” Hamman wrote. “But it is dead serious most of the time, so any cheesiness seems to have been unintentional. Which means viewers are going to be laughing at the movie instead of with it. We’re supposed to take this all seriously. We’re supposed to be creeped out.” You can check out the rest of Hamman’s review right here.

Physicians for Informed Consent States, ‘For Normal-Risk Children, the Polio Vaccine is Not Proven Safer Than Polio Infection’

Physicians for Informed Consent States, ‘For Normal-Risk Children, the Polio Vaccine is Not Proven Safer Than Polio Infection’
New Educational Materials Provide Important Data on Polio and the Polio Vaccine

Physicians for Informed Consent (PIC) has introduced two new educational documents, "Polio: What Parents Need to Know" and "IPV Vaccine: Is It Safer Than Polio?" Packed with key statistical data on the risk of polio as well as the risk of the IPV (inactivated poliovirus) vaccine, the documents assist parents in making a more informed risk-benefit calculation for vaccination.

"Now more than ever, people have concerns about vaccines on the childhood vaccination schedule, and a question we hear all the time is 'What about polio?'" said Greg Glaser, general counsel and national coalition director for Physicians for Informed Consent. "These new documents scientifically address this question, so more parents can research the vaccine and decide what's best for their children."

The following is a summary of essential facts included in the documents.

Polio - Disease Information Statement (DIS):

  • About 95% of people who contract polio have no symptoms (asymptomatic).
  • The great majority of polio infections that are fatal or result in permanent paralysis occur in people who have had their tonsils surgically removed (tonsillectomy) or do not rest after feeling sick.
  • Before the introduction of the polio vaccine in 1955, paralytic poliomyelitis was a disease of low incidence, occurring in about 1 in 22,000 or 0.005% in the U.S. population.
  • Before the polio vaccine was introduced, about 0.0005% (1 in 190,000) of children at normal risk contracted polio that was fatal or led to permanent paralysis.

Polio  - Vaccine Risk Statement (VRS):

  • The polio vaccine does not prevent asymptomatic infection or transmission.
  • The Institute of Medicine has not ruled out the possibility that IPV vaccination can lead to Guillain-Barré syndrome or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
  • Seizures may occur in about 1 in 829 children vaccinated with IPV vaccine.
  • A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) shows an IPV-containing vaccine may cause permanent injury 38 times more often than permanent injury from polio infection.
  • The polio vaccine has not been proven safer than polio infection for normal-risk children.

"As polio is so feared in our culture, the data we reveal is paradigm-shifting," said Dr. Shira Miller, founder and president of Physicians for Informed Consent. "Our educational documents show that for normal-risk children the polio vaccine is not proven safer than polio infection — which has serious implications for both children's health and vaccine mandates for school attendance."

To protect and enhance children's health, it's necessary that parents have access to reliable infectious disease and vaccine educational information. PIC makes scientific data freely available through its education program, a growing collection of concise, reader-friendly educational materials that support parents, physicians, and policymakers in calculating the risk-benefit ratio of vaccination. Saw X director says the movie features more Jigsaw than any other in the franchise

Saw X director says the movie features more Jigsaw than any other in the franchise

Saw X director Kevin Greutert says that the upcoming movie features more of Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw than any other in the franchise.

I want to play a game.” It’s been nearly twenty years since Jigsaw first uttered those words and began a bloody journey full of gruesome traps and terrific twists. However, after Jigsaw/John Kramer was killed off in Saw III, subsequent sequels featured the character less and less, to the point where he only appeared for two minutes in Saw 3D. Thankfully, that’s not going to be a problem in Saw X as director Kevin Greutert told Empire that the movie features more of Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw “than in any other Saw.

Kramer is the centre of the story,” Kevin Greutert said. “They tried to make the last Saw without Tobin, and to me, that was a pretty gutsy move.” In addition to more Jigsaw, Saw X will also return to a more gritty, realistic tone. “This one has pulled back to a somewhat more realistic level,” Greutert said. “Not maybe Saw I-level simplicity, but close. The more that the audience can get the sense that a smart engineer – which he is – could figure out what to do with these parts and make it work, the better.

Saw X will also shift the perspective of the story more towards Jigsaw himself. “[Saw X] is an emotional journey that you go on with John Kramer, and less a slaughterhouse that you experience from the point of view of the victims,” Greutert said. “Obviously there will be people that can’t handle it, but I think it has a good chance of appealing to people beyond gore freaks.

As the trailer revealed, Saw X will be set between the events of the first two movies. “John Kramer (Tobin Bell) is back. The most chilling installment of the SAW franchise yet explores the untold chapter of Jigsaw’s most personal game,” reads the official synopsis. “Set between the events of SAW I and II, a sick and desperate John travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer – only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. Armed with a newfound purpose, John returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral way through a series of ingenious and terrifying traps.

Saw X will hit theaters on September 29th.
