Peregrine Health Services Adds Nationally Known Experts to Its Emergency Department, Trauma Center Consulting Team
Dr. Douglas Slakey and Michael S. Brown join the firm as strategic advisors to help emergency departments and trauma centers improve the efficiency and quality of medical care.

Peregrine Health Services, LLC, a consultancy specializing in optimizing emergency department and trauma center performance, announces that Dr. Douglas Slakey and Michael S. Brown have joined the firm as strategic advisors.

"We're thrilled that two of the most widely respected leaders in the quality and efficiency of medical care will be working with our team of experienced trauma and emergency leaders," said Mark Feinberg, managing partner and CEO of Peregrine Health Services. "Doug and Michael bring unmatched skills that will augment our proven capability to help organizations achieve quantifiable improvements."

Peregrine Health Services launched in early 2023, but its track record in healthcare process improvement dates back to 2006 with the founding of Blue Jay Consulting, which built a reputation for excellence in quality implementation and leadership services for emergency departments. Philips Healthcare Transformation Services acquired Blue Jay Consulting in 2015, and Peregrine emerged from Philips this year.

Dr. Slakey and Brown will serve as advisors to Peregrine Health Services' core team of consultants: JoAnn Lazarus, senior vice president of training and development, and Angela Chisolm and Beth Fuller, managing partners. The three nurse leaders have worked in and directed emergency departments and trauma programs, have extensive experience in their respective fields, and are the recipients of some of the highest honors and recognitions in the nursing profession.

Dr. Slakey, an internationally recognized transplant surgeon and healthcare innovator, currently leads healthcare consulting and advisory services. He previously served as chief of surgical services at Advocate Aurora Health, providing clinical direction and strategic guidance across 27 hospitals in the greater Milwaukee region. Dr. Slakey's focus in that role was identifying and eliminating inefficiencies and incorporating ways to adopt technology such as advanced data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to optimize the patient experience.

At Aurora, Dr. Slakey also led a growth plan, developed partnerships with technology providers, and designed and implemented a new surgery residency program, including education, simulation, and research. Before that, Dr. Slakey served 21 years at Tulane University, culminating in appointments as professor and chair of surgery. He led efforts to rebuild the region's healthcare capacity after Hurricane Katrina. He also serves on the board of several major medical journals and has nearly 40 referenced abstracts and more than 150 peer-reviewed articles.

Dr. Slakey's commitment to patient-centric care, his enthusiasm for driving change, and his demonstrated record of leading teams that improve processes align seamlessly with Peregrine's philosophy. "I am excited to work with the Peregrine team to help others improve processes and empower team members to provide patient care that is reliable, safe, and of the highest quality," Dr. Slakey said.

Also joining Peregrine is Michael Brown, Founder and CEO of Cornerstone Health Advisors, which addresses underserved niches in the healthcare continuum with services including strategic initiative guidance and business development.

For over 25 years at bulge-bracket Wall Street firms, Brown has worked alongside for-profit and non-profit healthcare system clients of all sizes and has served as a strategic advisor and banker for complex mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and financing agreements. He has a master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business and a Bachelor of Science degree from Taylor University.

As emergency departments and trauma centers are primary drivers of a hospital system's financial performance, Brown recognizes that Peregrine can help deliver a financial impact for healthcare CFOs.

"Challenges related to emergency department and trauma center strategy have long ailed the efficiency and profitability of health systems. I am proud to partner with Peregrine to help bring solutions to health systems across the country," Brown said.

Brown and Dr. Slakey will join a nationally recognized team known for its focus on emergency department and trauma center leadership, operational, clinical, and financial performance, and its ability to provide team leadership, process improvement guidance, and hands-on operational support in operations during leadership gaps and times of transition.

"Our team has the expertise and commitment to identify and implement real and effective change, and having Michael Brown and Doug Blakely on board will expand our ability to bring that change to even more healthcare organizations," Feinberg said.

Priscilla: Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla Presley film will not feature any of Elvis’ music

Priscilla: Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla Presley film will not feature any of Elvis’ music

The biopic of Elvis Presley’s widow has the challenging obstacle of featuring the iconic musical figure without any of his signature tunes.

Baz Luhrmann’s Rock N Roll opera biopic on the life of The King, Elvis Presley, aimed to shed light on certain aspects of his life not previously explored in depth. Mostly told through the lens of Colonel Tom Parker, portrayed by Tom Hanks, Elvis took a look at how the man, the myth, the legend skyrocketed to divine-like status due to his relationship with the Colonel. Now, Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla is exploring the story behind Elvis’ widow, Priscilla Presley.

Luhrmann has stated that he is in full support of Priscilla and doesn’t view the film as any sort of competition or capitalization on his own movie. One presence that isn’t showing its support is Elvis Presley Enterprises. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sofia Coppola has revealed that she approached the company for the usage of Elvis’ music for the film, but to no avail. She explains, “They don’t like projects that they haven’t originated, and they’re protective of their brand. But that made us be more creative.”

The protection of the brand may be due to Coppola‘s representation of Elvis, since life with The King was anything but smooth. She outlines the change in the feeling the film has when the Rock N Roll star enters the scene, “When Elvis is in the building, there’s a different energy because he’s so full of life. When he’s gone, it’s more quiet. Every time Elvis shows up, we just burn money. With Priscilla, things felt sure-footed and we knew what to do and we had the means to do it. And Elvis would whirl in and it would be like, ‘Oh man, that guy’s always got to be in some crazy outfit and he’s always got to have 10 people around him.’ ”

Baz Luhrmann didn’t shy away from the manic moments in his biopic. However, the Aussie director looks at Coppola’s film as somewhat of a companion piece, saying, “Elvis and Priscilla are a kind of American royalty, that were… I wouldn’t say banished, but I think it just shows that… Elvis and Priscilla are back in the culture, not just popular culture, but, I think, in American industry. I think their lives are really woven into the fabric of the American story. And I’m really looking forward to what part of the story is told.”

Row: Sophie Skelton leads the cast of murder mystery thriller

Row: Sophie Skelton leads the cast of murder mystery thriller

Sophie Skelton of Outlander and Day of the Dead: Bloodline leads the cast of the murder mystery thriller Row, filming soon in Scotland

The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Sophie Skelton of Outlander will be leading the cast of the UK murder mystery thriller Row, which is currently in pre-production and will begin filming in Scotland next month. Joining Skelton in the cast are Bella Dayne (Troy: Fall of a City), Akshay Khanna (Red, White & Royal Blue), and Mark Strepan (Before We Die).

Row will mark the feature debut of director Matthew Losasso and writer Nick Skaugen – and Skaugen has an acting role in the film as well. The story centers on a woman who washes ashore on a blood-stained rowing boat. With all of her crew mates missing, presumed dead, she must try and piece together fractured memories of the ordeal to prove her innocence.

Skaugen is producing the film with line producer Matt Schichter. Losasso provided the following statement: “An immense ocean appears to stretch infinitely in all directions and yet on board the Valiant, the lack of space fuels paranoia and intense drama. It’s a compelling and fabulously ambitious script. If filming on water wasn’t enough of a challenge, throw in a twisty dark plot, complicated techniques to avoid green screen backdrops, a commitment to capture the rugged beauty of ocean landscapes and the constraints of independent filmmaking.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that production designer Alex Jones Nash has overseen the design and construction of a water tank that sits on the edge of the ocean so that Row can be filmed in the tank, but will look like it was filmed on the open sea.

Losasso has previously directed numerous commercials and music videos.

Row sounds interesting to me, so I’m looking forward to seeing how it’s going to turn out. Does this sound like a movie you would be interested in watching? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Sophie Skelton is best known for playing the role of Brianna on 48 episodes of Outlander – a show I haven’t gotten around to watching yet, so unfortunately the only thing I have seen her in is Day of the Dead: Bloodline, a wrong-headed attempt to remake / reboot the George A. Romero classic Day of the Dead. Row will probably be better than that.

You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah Review

You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah Review

Adam Sandler’s daughters headline this feel good coming-of-age story that blends Judy Blume and John Hughes into a solid comedy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18vVUTmhJ8w

PLOT: Lifelong best friends Stacy and Lydia have long dreamt of epic bat mitzvahs but when popular boy Andy Goldfarb and Hebrew school drama come between them, their perfect plans go comically awry.

REVIEW: The latest Happy Madison production for Netflix is a family affair with Adam Sandler producing and co-starring in a production led by a cast featuring his daughters, Sunny and Sadie, and his wife, Jackie. Based on the best-selling young adult novel You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah could easily have been written off as a nepotism project for the Sandler clan. But, with a heartfelt message and a theme reminiscent of classic Judy Blume, the film works far better than it has any right to. Sure, it has a few requisite moments of bathroom humor, as any Adam Sandler project is bound to feature, but You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah is actually a pretty good teen-centric comedy.

The film centers on Stacy Friedman (Sunny Sandler), a thirteen-year-old planning her bat mitzvah with her best friend Lydia Rodriguez Katz (Samantha Lorraine). Stacy and Lydia have been friends since preschool and are focused on celebrating their entrance into womanhood in spectacular fashion. Stacy is also enamored with Andy Goldfarb (Dylan Hoffman), part of the popular kids, including mean girl Kym Chang Cohen (Miya Cech). Stacy lives at home with her sister, Ronnie (Sadie Sandler), and her parents, Bree (Idina Menzel) and Danny (Adam Sandler), who are struggling with their daughter’s outlandish and expensive plans for her party. Lydia, meanwhile, is dealing with the upcoming divorce of her mom, Gabi (Jackie Sandler), and dad Eli (Luis Guzman). As both girls strive to fit in with the popular kids, Lydia and Andy sharing a kiss ends the friendship and sends Stacy on a downward spiral.

When their friendship fractures, the movie takes a decidedly vengeful tone as Stacy tries to get back at Lydia in various ways. This involves spreading rumors, revealing secrets, and trying to steal Andy away from her. As things get progressively worse, Stacy begins to realize what is most important, and that is where the film shines. Sunny Sandler shares a good amount of her dad’s comedic timing, which helps make Stacy a likable protagonist, even when she is acting meanly. Sunny also mugs for the camera a little too often, something she also gets from her dad. But, where this film could have been written off as pure nepotism, it has its heart in the right place and works because of the wholesome script and solid direction. Sunny Sandler plays elder sister Ronnie as a moody high schooler but one with sage wisdom for her younger sibling. It also helps that the bulk of the parental screen time is given to Idina Menzel, with Adam Sandler taking a backseat. Sandler has a good scene where he gets to go over the top, but mostly his performance is subdued and supports the rest of the cast.

Of the supporting cast, it is a bit of a mixed bag, with Ido Mosseri’s woebegone DJ Schmuley getting a lot of screen time involving vehicular mishaps. While worth a chuckle, those scenes could have been spent with Stacy and Lydia’s friends Tara (Dylan Dash) and Nikki (Millie Thorpe). The kids overall are very well-cast and funny. The adult cast is good, with Saturday Night Live cast member Sarah Sherman stealing the show as Rabbi Rebecca. Sherman has proven herself as a stand-up comedian and delivered some bizarrely funny sketches on SNL, but here she owns every scene she is in. You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah will serve as a launching pad for Adam Sandler’s daughters, but I also hope it gives Sarah Sherman the boost she deserves to get more substantial screen roles.

Blending the realistic look at teens in films like Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink with the modern Generation Z world of TikTok and memes, You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah works because it is not a traditional Happy Madison endeavor. Written by Allison Peck and directed by Sammi Cohen (Crush), the comedy has roots in Fiona Rosenbloom’s novel. Published in 2005, Rosenbloom’s novel needed several updates to align with what the average thirteen-year-old deals with today, but it still feels like a genuine coming-of-age story that is not mired in cliches or stereotypes. In fact, You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah is endearing for teens and adults alike, with both bound to find enjoyment in this story. Even with a Jewish-centric storyline, this film is not made specifically for Jewish viewers. It can be enjoyed by anyone who has ever been a teenager or a parent of one.

You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah

You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah is a mild PG-13 film with some expected crass humor involving bodily fluids. Some tame profanity is peppered throughout, but nothing that middle school-aged kids and above cannot handle. This is one of the best productions from Happy Madison and never feels like a vanity project for Adam Sandler to get his kids into Hollywood. With a good script and Sammi Cohen’s energetic direction, You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah is an enjoyable coming-of-age story that, like this year’s Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret, works as a portrait of being a teenager, female or otherwise. Adam Sandler and his production company should take a cue from this film and make more genuine movies like it.

V/H/S/85 teaser trailer: horror anthology franchise continues on Shudder in October

V/H/S/85 teaser trailer: horror anthology franchise continues on Shudder in October

A teaser trailer has been released for the horror anthology film V/H/S/85, reaching the Shudder streaming service in October

V/H/S/94 and V/H/S/99 were major successes for the Shudder streaming service in October of 2021 and ’22, respectively, so it’s no surprise that Shudder has made sure another entry in the horror anthology franchise is ready to begin streaming this Halloween season. The latest entry in the franchise is called V/H/S/85, and a teaser trailer can be seen in the embed above! V/H/S/85 is scheduled to reach Shudder on October 6th.

David Bruckner (Hellraiser 2022), Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell), Natasha Kermani (Lucky), and Mike P. Nelson (the Wrong Turn reboot) are the directors this time around. The movie has the following synopsis: An ominous mixtape blends never before seen snuff footage with nightmarish newscasts and disturbing home video to create a surreal, analog mashup of the forgotten 80s.

Bruckner had this to say about the project: “The V/H/S series is a continued love letter to found footage nastiness and the mad variety of anthology horror. Having helmed a segment of the OG film, I’m beyond excited to be back behind the camera in V/H/S/85, alongside some of my very favorite voices in the genre.”

Bruckner produced V/H/S/85 alongside Josh Goldbloom of Cinepocalypse, Brad Miska of Bloody Disgusting, the filmmaking collective Radio Silence (which consists of Chad Villella, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, and Tyler Gillett), and James Harris. Studio71’s Michael Schreiber and Adam Boorstin serve as executive producers.

V/H/S/85 is the sixth V/H/S/ movie, but if you factor in the spin-offs SiREN (which was based on a segment from the first movie) and Kids vs. Aliens (based on a segment from the second V/H/S/), it’s the eighth installment in the overall franchise. Or what one might call the “V/H/S/ Cinematic Universe”.

Are you a fan of the V/H/S/ franchise? What did you think of the teaser trailer for V/H/S/85? Will you be watching this one on Shudder this Halloween season? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

I have never been blown away by any of the V/H/S movies, but I always end up checking them out. So I’ll do the same for V/H/S/85, especially since it brought together an interesting group of directors.

Flora and Son trailer: John Carney’s latest music-themed film comes to Apple TV+ in September

Flora and Son trailer: John Carney’s latest music-themed film comes to Apple TV+ in September

A trailer has been released for John Carney’s latest music-themed film, Flora and Son, coming to Apple TV+ in September

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9S0OGh5r_70

JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to watch Flora and Son – the latest music-themed film from director John Carney (OnceBegin Again, and Sing Street) – at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and the result was a 9/10 review you can read at THIS LINK. A wider audience will get their chance to see Flora and Son when it reaches Apple TV+ on September 29th, and with that date just a month away a trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises) and Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters), who happens to be the daughter of Bono from U2, Flora and Son was also scripted by Carney and centers on single mom Flora (Hewson), who is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son, Max. Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, Flora tries to occupy him with a beat-up acoustic guitar. With the help of a washed-up L.A. musician, Jeff (Gordon-Levitt), Flora and Max discover the transformative power of music.

Max is played by Orén Kinlan (Sunlight). Jack Reynor (The Peripheral) is also in the cast, along with Amy Huberman (Threesome), Keith McErlean (Kin), Aislín McGuckin (Outlander), Margarita Murphy (One Night in Dublin), Marcella Plunkett (The Bachelor Weekend), Paul Reid (The Ritual), Kelly Thornton (Life’s a Breeze), Sophie Vavasseur (Bring It On: Worldwide #Cheersmack), and Don Wycherley (I Kill Giants).

Carney produced the film with Anthony Bregman, Peter Cron, Rebecca O’Flanagan, and Robert Walpole. Alison Cohen, Cathleen Dore, and Milan Popelka serve as executive producers.

Bumbray said, “One really has to give Carney a lot of credit, as he typically stays in one genre (the music-driven romance/comedy), but he does so brilliantly. Nobody makes movies like he does, and each of his films feel like a gift. Flora and Son is no exception.

I haven’t gotten around to watch Begin Again yet, but I really enjoyed Once and Sing Street, so I’m definitely interested in watching both Begin Again and Flora and Son.

What did you think of the trailer for Flora and Son? Will you be watching this movie, and have you seen John Carney’s other movies? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Michael Mann on Heat 2 and how Ferrari is a 30-year passion project in the making

Michael Mann on Heat 2 and how Ferrari is a 30-year passion project in the making

Michael Mann details his 30-year journey leading to Ferrari, comments on the SAG-AFTRA strike, Heat 2, and more.

At 80 years old, Michael Mann has achieved more in his lifetime than most people can dream. He’s a father of four, has developed top-tier television programming, and wrote a bestseller in his novel expanding the Heat Universe. He’s one of Hollywood’s most prolific creators, goal-oriented, and not about to stop entertaining the masses anytime soon if he has his way. Speaking with Variety, Mann opened up the hood for his upcoming film Ferarri, a biographical drama starring Adam Driver, Shailene Woodley, Penélope Cruz, Sarah Gadon, and more about the life story of Italian sports car entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari.

Speaking with the outlet, Mann detailed his 30-year Ferrari journey, saying it’s been a personal labor of love since 1967, when he was a draft-dodging film student in London, living off a meager sum as he forged ahead. Mann says the inspiration for Ferarri first hit when he emerged from the London Underground and witnessed a Ferarri 275 GTB four-cam moving through the street. “It was just this integration of performance speed and sheer beauty,” Mann tells his interviewer. Mann says that moment was love at first sight, and the image of that vehicle burned into his mind’s eye, like a white-hot brand pressing into pink flesh.

Mann is content knowing Ferarri isn’t attached to a major studio. “The origins of the movie and the content of the screenplay and the movie that you saw do not fit into the kind of film that would be embraced by the conventional studio system,” he says. “It’s truly appropriate that it is an independent film being distributed by Neon, a very independent distributor.”

Ferarri‘s independent status also helps in the face of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Mann remembers the previous striking period in 1988 when actors forfeited home video returns. Seeing how streaming has changed the landscape, he doesn’t want creatives to lose out on a better deal for their hard work. “I think that the struggle is kind of late-stage capitalism,” he says. “Writers are massively underpaid — even top feature-film writers. They all start with this.” He holds up a blank piece of paper. “We begin with nothing, absolutely nothing.”

Turning his attention to Heat 2, the failure of 2015’s Blackhat still haunts him. A cyber-thriller starring Chris Hemsworth, Blackhat earned $19.6 million worldwide against a $70 million budget. The film never found an audience, and Mann believes he knows what went wrong.

“It’s my responsibility. The script was not ready to shoot,” says Mann. “The subject may have been ahead of the curve, because there were a number of people who thought this was all fantasy. Wrong. Everything is stone-cold accurate.” Mann explains that Blackhat came at a time when audiences had yet to learn about the true horrors of technology. Mann says he edits with care, with no frames wasted. Blackhat is the one exception, and the project suffered as a result.

Knowing that time waits for no one, Mann addresses the idea of running out of time to make Heat 2. Mann likens the circumstances to an architect friend of his. He says the friend is continually establishing new projects. They have since the 1980s. There’s a desire to die while making at least one of them. The way Mann talks about it, he’s ready to pass while doing what he loves most: making films.

The following day, he approaches the interviewer from Variety again to clarify his previous statement. “The thing is, I don’t think about mortality. I’m busy. What good would it do me? If I absolutely had to make ‘Heat 2,’ I wouldn’t have got lost in this beautiful story of Ferrari. And I took two years to write a novel.” He offers a mischievous smile and adds, “Fortunately, it became a New York Times No. 1 bestseller.” Then he says, “The things I’m into are things that fascinate me and keep me moving forward.”

Mann says he’s poured much of himself into developing Heat 2, but he won’t lose sleep if the film never sees the light of day. He won’t feel incomplete if it never comes to pass.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is hatching a London Film Festival world premiere

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is hatching a London Film Festival world premiere

Aardman’s Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget premiere is at the London Film Festival in October before its Netflix launch.

After years of waiting to come out of its shell, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is ready to hatch. Aardman‘s long-awaited sequel will premiere at the London Film Festival on October 14 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall as part of the festival’s annual Mayor of London gala. Additionally, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget will screen in film houses across the UK, with the sequel’s Netflix global premiere set for December 15, 2023.

The voice cast of Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget includes Thandiwe Newton as Ginger, Zachary Levi as Rocky Rhodes, Bella Ramsey as Molly, Romesh Ranganathan as Nick, Daniel Mays as Fetcher, David Bradley as Fowler, Jane Horrocks as Babs, Imelda Staunton as Bunty, Lynn Ferguson as Mac, Josie Sedgwick-Davies as Frizzle, and Nick Mohammed as Dr. Fry.

In June, Phil Lord said that he and Aardman co-founder Nick Park had discussed various ideas for a sequel to Chicken Run (lovingly described as “The Great Escape with chickens”) over the years but finally found the idea for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget during a brainstorming session with the original film’s writer Karey Kirkpatrick. Here’s how: “We came up with the idea that if in the original they were breaking out, this time they would be breaking in.”

Here’s an official synopsis for Aardman’s Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget:

Set shortly after the death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm in the original, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget sees Ginger having finally found her dream — a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland, the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk — this time, they’re breaking in!

The sequel’s director, Sam Fell, was intimidated by the original film’s popularity but was drawn to the sequel by the strength of the characters. He said Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget moves the story “into the ’60s and an era of industrial farming. We imagined this factory farm will be making nuggets, not just any old nuggets, the world’s first nugget. You can imagine that the recipe for the first nugget would be a highly guarded secret. It would be top security. We took that and kept pushing it and exaggerated this factory farm so it had a Bond villain’s layout with ridiculous security. It gave us kind of a genre to work in. We got into this notion of it being a Bond movie with chickens.”

Sam Fell (Flushed Away) directs Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget from a script by Karey Kirkpatrick, John O’Farrell, and Rachel Tunnard. The producers are Steve Pegram (Arthur Christmas) and Leyla Hobart. Executive producers include Peter Lord, Carla Shelley, Karey Kirkpatrick, and Nick Park.

Released by DreamWorks Pictures, Chicken Run centers on a flock of chickens who think their only hope of escaping incarceration is a hotshot rooster to teach them how to fly. In addition to being a beautifully animated film, Chicken Run presents a gripping commentary on imprisonment and the toppling of those who rule with an iron grip.
