The Last of Us showrunner says he’d be open to spin-offs under certain conditions

The Last of Us showrunner says he’d be open to spin-offs under certain conditions

The Last of Us spin-offs could happen, but the studio must take great care when expanding the world and its characters.

HBO‘s The Last of Us could be the beginning of something much more significant for the network. Development on the second season is already underway, but could there be more in the pipeline? According to The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin, spin-offs could happen. However, extensive talks should take place about how an expansion to the world would enrich the world and its characters.

“We haven’t talked about that specifically because we’re so focused on just telling this main narrative,” Mazin told The Wrap about creating spin-offs. “I’m not against the idea of other shows that may draw from these characters or that world.”

Speaking about his contribution to the franchise, Mazin continued, “I don’t know how much more The Last of Us I personally would be able to do. I mean, these shows are so big, I’m sort of burning one of the precious few remaining decades I have on telling this story. But in principle, I have no issue with it whatsoever. And I’m sure Neil would be interested as well.”

“If there was something that made sense, then I don’t see why not,” Mazin added. “My great hope is that if there is anything like that, that it’s done with as much care and respect and love as what we are applying to this series right now.”

It’s challenging to think about expanding The Last of Us world without drawing comparisons to AMC’s The Walking Dead. Few could have predicted how much that show would blow up and grow throughout the years. With The Last of Us in a similar post-apocalyptic boat, stories and characters from Joel’s (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) orbit could extend beyond Sony’s initial intentions for the series.

I can think of several characters that could get a spin-off series, including The Last of Us Part II’s Abby Anderson, the game’s primary antagonist, or Lev, a former member of the Seraphites and the brother of Yara. Their stories extend beyond The Last of Us Part II; that is obvious. If Sony wants to focus on existing characters, they could start there. Or, like AMC’s The Walking Dead, they could introduce brand-new characters to the franchise and tell their harrowing stories.

Would you be open to more series from The Last of Us? Can you think of any existing characters from the franchise you’d like to know more about? Let us know in the comments section below.

The Equalizer director is thinking about de-aging Denzel Washington for an origin story

The Equalizer director is thinking about de-aging Denzel Washington for an origin story

Antoine Fuqua says he could imagine de-aging Denzel Washington for an Equalizer origin story after seeing how technology has advanced.

The Equalizer franchise’s Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) has lived a storied life, taking a bite out of crime and stomping gangsters like Goombas under Mario’s boots. Before battling Russian thugs in 2014’s The Equalizer or taking on rogue CIA agents in 2018’s The Equalizer 2 and the Italian Mafia in The Equalizer 3, he undoubtedly tangled with other villains. For fans who want to see a young McCall in action, director Antoine Fuqua thinks it could happen, and technology could be the key to making it all possible.

Speaking with NME, Fuqua said he’s considered de-aging Washington for an Equalizer origin story. We’ve seen actors de-aged more and more lately, with the latest example being for a lengthy sequence in James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. De-aging tech used to look pretty rough, but AI programs have advanced in recent years, providing filmmakers with access to jaw-dropping tools and effects.

“Especially now with the new technology and the AI and all of that kind of stuff… Is there a story to be told about how [McCall] became this person — the younger version?” Fuqua told NME. “I’ve had that conversation with Richard Wenk [Equalizer series screenwriter] quite a bit.”

That said, Fuqua has yet to run the idea past Denzel Washington, who would ultimately be the one wearing the face-capture technology. “It’s all so fresh and new,” Fuqua said. “I’m still watching [the technology]. I’ve watched Harrison Ford’s film and I know there’s other movies coming out… And I’m hearing the technology is getting better and better and better. So I’m kind of watching it to see where it goes.”

It’s interesting to hear Fuqua contemplating an Equalizer origin story after saying the third installment could be the final bow for himself and Washington. Speaking with Empire about the threequel earlier this month, Fuqua said, “This is it. Robert McCall, the working-man hero, at some point he’s got to walk away from it. At some point someone else has to pick up the ball and serve justice. He’s served his justice. He’s in a foreign place, he’s trying to find a home, find a place in the world. That’s really what’s important.”

Do you think The Equalizer 3 is the final curtain call for Fuqua and Washington? Is an Equalizer origin story possible? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Sound of Freedom 2: sequel talk complicated by rights issues?

While Sound of Freedom 2 sounds logical given how popular the movie is, the complicated rights situation makes it far from a sure thing.

Recently, Sound of Freedom director Alejandro Monteverde teased a potential sequel to the breakout hit of the summer, but making a Sound of Freedom 2 may be easier said than done. While the film has become a massive financial success ($178 million on a $14.5 million budget), Variety is reporting that given the way the film was financed, many parties involved could lay claim to the right to make a sequel, with Monteverde having only secured the right to make one film based on subject Tim Ballard’s life.

Indeed, producer Mike Ilitch Jr. apparently owns Ballard’s life rights, and he could theoretically make his own follow-up to the film. While it’s possible (and maybe even likely) that Illitch (who isn’t listed as a producer on Sound of Freedom) might team up with Monteverde and Angel Studios for a follow-up (as well as star Jim Caviezel), it’s not as clear-cut a situation as it would be had a traditional Hollywood studio financed the film. Angel Studios is thought to hold the rights to the title Sound of Freedom (but not Ballard’s life rights), so Variety hypothesizes that the studio could make a spin-off instead of a traditional sequel – if need be.

With the film making tens of millions in profit, the film still seems all but certain to generate some kind of follow-up, whether it’s with Angel Studios, Monteverde and Caviezel, or without. It’s unusual for a movie like this to become such a grassroots hit, with the film bringing to mind the seventies cult classic Billy Jack, which, similarly, was financed by a major studio, dumped, and then released independently to boffo box office (and sequels). Certainly, all involved would be wise to pool their resources, as I’m not sure a Sound of Freedom follow-up works without Monteverde’s apolical approach, Angel’s marketing savvy, and Caviezel’s in the lead. The wrong mix could severely limit its crossover appeal.

As far as Sound of Freedom goes, we’ve actually been preparing a deep dive video on the film that cuts through some of the noise and explains its road to the big screen and why it’s hit a nerve with people. You can expect that to drop Monday over at JoBlo Originals!

Granger Health Announces Acquisition of Medical Device and Data Analytics Company

TracPatch Health, LLC recently completed the acquisition of assets formerly owned by TracPatch Health, Inc., previously headquartered in Sacramento, California. The debt restructuring required for the transaction was facilitated by Granger Capital to assist in the purchase.

Under its new ownership, TracPatch Health will continue to be a provider of innovative surface-sensor, remote patient monitoring devices and data capture for musculoskeletal health. The technology monitors key patient metrics, allowing a surgeon to monitor a patient's recovery remotely, connecting pre-operative data measurements with post-operative recovery metrics to provide evidence-based medicine throughout the care cycle and keeping a continuous link between the patient and healthcare provider.

TracPatch is a non-invasive, FDA Class I exempt medical device that provides a digital health solution designed to provide accessible, connected, and more predictable recovery. TracPatch is a 24/7 passive, continuous, and platform-agnostic remote monitoring system that includes two non-invasive, surface sensors that synchronize with the patient and healthcare provider mobile apps and a healthcare provider web portal. The TracPatch Insights platform helps to maximize the probability of a successful episode of care by focusing on critical metrics for patient compliance and providing early detection of adverse events, such as arthrofibrosis and infection. This results in reduced readmissions, cost containment, and better patient satisfaction with optimal clinical outcomes.

TracPatch will continue to serve hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, physical therapists, and surgeons, including the University of Miami Health, Northwestern University, Baylor University, OrthoSC, and numerous others currently using the TracPatch system. The core use is designed for surgical and non-surgical procedures in the orthopedic musculoskeletal market, which encompasses a range of procedures such as knee replacements, and ACL reconstructions. Future applications will focus on lumbar spine surgeries, hip replacements, rotator cuff surgeries, and shoulder replacements.

TracPatch Health is managed by Granger Health, a Granger Group company, and will be led by Holly McAlpine as managing director. As the company continues its extraordinary growth, TracPatch will continue to deliver on its value proposition of saving clinical time, lowering costs and reducing health risk.

Terry Funk Dead: wrestling superstar was 79

Terry Funk Dead: wrestling superstar was 79

The legendary Terry Funk, a WWE Hall of Fame, has passed away at 79. According to TMZ, follow wrestling superstar Ric Flair was the first to break the news via his Twitter account, with the Nature Boy writing, “In My Entire Life, I’ve Never Met A Guy Who Worked Harder. Terry Funk Was A Great Wrestler, Entertainer, Unbelievably Fearless, And A Great Friend! Rest In Peace, My Friend Terry Funk, Knowing That No One Will Ever Replace You In The World Of Professional Wrestling!”

Even if you’ve never watched a single wrestling match in your life, you’d probably recognize Terry Funk. In addition to his impressive fifty-year wrestling career, the hulking Funk, with his curly hair and beard, often played henchmen in eighties action movies. Sylvester Stallone put him through a glass window in Over the Top, and Patrick Swayze gave him a few really good beatings in Road House.

Despite appearing in these cult classics, wrestling was Funk’s first love, with him having spent time in the WWF (now WWE), WCW, NWA, ECW and many more. Funk hadn’t wrestled since 2017 and reportedly suffered from dementia in recent years, although that didn’t stop him from releasing an autobiographical comic book in 2022.

Indeed, Funk’s career was legendary. His down-and-dirty moves were all the rage, so much so that when Sylvester Stallone was looking to film a street fight for the climax of Rocky V, he had Funk as the choreographer. Like many of his contemporaries, Funk always seemed at ease in the ring playing either villains or heroes, and he was known for being a mentor behind the scenes to rising talents like Mick Foley, who said on Twitter, “Terry Funk is gone. I just talked to Terry’s daughter, Brandee, who gave me the awful news. He was my mentor, my idol, and one of my closest friends. He was the greatest wrestler I ever saw…”

From all of us here at JoBlo, we wish all of the best to Mr. Funk’s fans and loved ones. Indeed, the man was a one-of-a-kind wrestling icon.
