William Friedkin, legendary director of The French Connection and The Exorcist, dies at 87

The French Connection and The Exorcist director William Friedkin died in the city of Los Angeles at the age of 87.

William Friedkin, the Oscar-winning director behind The ExorcistThe French ConnectionTo Live and Die in L.A., The Boys in the Band, and more, is dead at 87. Friedkin died in Los Angeles, said his wife, former producer and studio head Sherry Lansing.

Born on August 29, 1935, in Chicago, Friedkin started directing television before disgusting audiences with projectile pea soup and dealings with demons. In the mid-’60s, Friedkin shot an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Hour and helmed various telefilms. Before the era was over, he got behind the camera for features like Good Times (1967), The Birthday Party (1968), and The Night They Raided Minsky’s (1968).

He started the ’70s off with a band by directing The Boys in the Band. With his name already on the lips of executives everywhere, he moved on to The French Connection, a show-stopping thriller starring Gene Hackman as Detective Popeye Doyle. The French Connection won multiple Oscars, including the prize for Best Picture. Fueled by his monumental win at one of the industry’s most significant celebrations, Friedkin set his sights on a film that would scare the daylights out of moviegoers, The Exorcist.

The 1973 horror classic stars Linda Blair as Reagan MacNeil, a young girl possessed by a demon who compels two Catholic priests to question everything they know about their beliefs and occupation. In addition to winning the Best Picture prize at the Oscars, The Exorcist won the statues for Lead Actress Ellen Burstyn and screenwriter William Peter Blatty and Supporting nominations for Blair and Jason Miller.

The Exorcist is considered one of the scariest movies of all time by some horror buffs, and a restored version of the film is playing at the Venice Film Festival next month. Additionally, Ellen Burstyn is reprising her role in a remake, thanks to Blumhouse. Meanwhile, The Exorcist: Believer comes to theaters in October. David Gordon Green directs, with Burstyn, Jennifer Nettles, and Ann Dowd leading the cast.

The Exorcist is a project that never left Friedkin’s soul for long. One of his final projects, The Devil and Father Amorth, finds the director filming an honest-to-God exorcism. Friedkin loved capturing the juxtaposition between good and evil and sharing it with audiences worldwide.

Later, Friedkin directed Cruising, a controversial film the MPAA gave an X rating because of its graphic sex scenes. Disappointed by the organization’s prudish view, Friendkin lopped 40 minutes off the movie starring Al Pacino and Paul Sorvino to secure an R rating.

After helming To Live and Die in L.A., a thriller starring William Petersen and Willem Dafoe, Friedkin shot various music videos (including songs for Wang Chung and Barbra Streisand), 1990’s The Guardian, the Tales From the Crypt episode “On a Deadman’s Chest,” the sports drama Blue ChipsJade, and the 1998 MGM telefilm 12 Angry Men, starring Jack Lemmon, Courtney B. Vance, George C. Scott, Ossie Davis, James Gandolfini, Edward James Olmos, Tony Danza, Petersen, and others.

Like most filmmakers who find themselves passing on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for one reason or another, Friedkin did have regrets. “I’ve burned bridges and relationships to the point that I consider myself lucky to still be around. I never played by the rules, often to my own detriment. I’ve been rude, exercised bad judgment, squandered most of the gifts God gave me, and treated the love and friendship of others as I did Basquiat’s art and Prince’s music. When you are immune to the feelings of others, can you be a good father, a good husband, a good friend? Do I have regrets? You bet.” If nothing else, Friedkin’s words prove that even the most enigmatic of filmmakers can fall prey to their own ego and sometimes unwillingness to see the forest for the trees.

We here at JoBlo wish Mr. Friedkin’s family, friends, and fans peace and healing during this difficult time. To say we’re admirers of Friedkin’s work is an understatement, and we wish him safe travels to the Great Hereafter. We will cherish his cinematic gifts and remember how he helped challenge the industry and beyond.

Alien vs. Predator anime series: more details have been revealed about the shelved show

Writers/consultants Dave Baker and Eric Calderon have revealed more details about the shelved Alien vs. Predator anime series

In early 2020, we heard mention of an Alien vs. Predator anime series that had been made before the 20th Century Fox / Disney merger and never released. A few months ago, Joshua Izzo, who made Alien Day an official event while working at Fox, confirmed that an Alien vs. Predator anime series was produced, all ten episodes were completed, and now they’re just sitting in the Disney vault. Now the anime’s writers/consultants Dave Baker and Eric Calderon have revealed more details about the shelved series during an interview on the Best TV Never Made podcast!

The interview takes up two episodes, both of which can be found on the Best TV Never Made website. The show is hosted by Peter Holmstrom and Ryan Matsunaga.

Like Izzo said, the anime was originally envisioned as an adaptation of the Dark Horse Comics that followed the character Machiko Noguchi, and the idea was that three Machiko story arcs would play out over the 10 episodes, which could then be cut together into a trilogy of animated movies. The first episodes would be an adaptation of the Aliens vs. Predator comics, the next batch of episodes would be an adaptation of the follow-up Aliens vs. Predator: War, and then it would wrap up with a new Machiko story. Several scripts had been written for that approach when a director was brought in – and even though this director had never seen Predator, they wanted to come up with their own original story. They did happen to be a huge fan of Aliens, so there was going to be a lot of echoes of Aliens in this anime.

At first, the director suggested a story that would be set on a deep space freighter where an evil genius called The Game Master would gather Aliens, Predators, and humans together for a death match to find out who’s the strongest. Baker and Calderon convinced them to abandon that idea and figure out a different approach.

The podcast breaks it down for us: “The 10 episode series mainly focused on a teenage engineer who has to protect a young girl (around 6 years old) named Leen, very similar to the relationship between Ripley and Newt. This character is eventually discovered to be a genetically modified alien-human hybrid who can control aliens through pheromones. A b-plot follows Hank, a soldier type character modeled after Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Dutch from Predator, who had an encounter with a Predator many years ago and has PTSD as a result of it. That Predator has now returned to conclude their battle. This Predator was dubbed Einhander as it has only one hand. It was inspired by the Predator named Ahab from the Dark Horse comics.

And since the director was heavily influenced by Aliens, “the main human villain became a businessman type who betrays the main characters at a certain point.” The director wanted to call the character Douglas Fairbanks, but the name was shortened to Fairbanks when he found out that Douglas Fairbanks was the name of a famous actor.

Baker and Calderon never directly say the name of the director during their interview. To hear more details about the anime that we may or may not ever have the chance to see, and to hear all about their experience working on the project, head over to the Best TV Never Made website and listen to the Alien vs. Predator: The Anime episodes.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter clip shows Dracula attacking the crew

A new clip from The Last Voyage of the Demeter shows Dracula (played by Javier Botet) attacking ship crew members

Universal Pictures’ The Last Voyage of the Demeter, which is based on a single chapter, the Captain’s Log, from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, is set to reach theatres this Friday, August 11th… and if you don’t want to wait for more days to see the film’s version of Dracula in action, all you have to do is watch the new clip embedded above! The clip shows Dracula, played by Javier Botet (Mama), attacking the crew of the titular ship.

Escaping development hell twenty years after the script was first written (Bragi F. Schut, Stefan Ruzowitzky, and Zak Olkewicz all receive writing credits on the finished film), The Last Voyage of the Demeter tells the story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo – fifty unmarked wooden crates – from Carpathia to London. Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew.

The film stars Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton) as Clemens, a doctor who joins the Demeter crew; Aisling Franciosi (The Nightingale) as an unwitting stowaway; Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones) as the ship’s captain; and David Dastmalchian (the Ant-Man franchise) as the Demeter’s first mate. Also in the cast are Jon Jon Briones (American Horror Story), Stefan Kapicic (Deadpool films), Nikolai Nikolaeff (Stranger Things), and the aforementioned Javier Botet.

Directed by André Øvredal (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), The Last Voyage of the Demeter is coming to us from DreamWorks Pictures. The project was produced by Brad Fischer and Mike Medavoy and Arnold Messer for Phoenix Pictures. Matthew Hirsch serves as executive producer.

What did you think of the “Dracula attacks crew” from The Last Voyage of the Demeter? Will you be watching this movie? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

I won’t be making it out to the theatre this week, but I’m really looking forward to seeing The Last Voyage of the Demeter at some point down the line.

BillionToOne Publishes UNITY Fetal RhD and Fetal Antigen NIPT Clinical Validity Demonstrating >99.9% Accuracy

BillionToOne Publishes UNITY Fetal RhD and Fetal Antigen NIPT Clinical Validity Demonstrating >99.9% Accuracy
In a clinical validation study published on Scientific Reports, UNITY RhD NIPT and Fetal antigen NIPT demonstrated 100% sensitivity, 100% specificity, 99.9% precision with 0.1% no-call rate across 3,921 NIPT assays.

BillionToOne, experts in fetal DNA quantification, announced today that Scientific Reports published a study1 of the UNITY Fetal Antigen Noninvasive Prenatal Test (NIPT). The validation study marks an inflection point for patients who are at risk of Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn (HDFN) due to the assay's unmatched accuracy coupled with its novel approach.

In this validation study co-authored by scientists at BillionToOne and Brigham and Women's Hospital and senior-authored by Dr. Kathryn Gray, MD, PhD, the UNITY Fetal Antigen NIPT correctly determined the antigen status for 1,061 preclinical samples resulting in 100%  sensitivity and specificity and achieved 99.9% precision on 1,683 clinical samples. Clinical samples with known outcomes (neonatal antigen genotype/serology) were also evaluated with 100% concordance across 93 antigen evaluations in 30 alloimmunized pregnancies. Impressively, 100% accuracy was achieved while maintaining a low no-call rate of 0.1%.

HDFN is a serious condition that occurs when a pregnant patient's antibodies cross the placenta and attack the fetal red blood cells. When most severe, HDFN can cause life-threatening anemia in the fetus. Prior to the availability of UNITY Fetal Antigen NIPT, identifying patients at highest risk of HDFN was error-prone and cumbersome, necessitating a partner's sample and invasive diagnostic testing.

This new approach with UNITY Fetal Antigen NIPT is set to revolutionize identification and management for patients at risk of severe HDFN due to the assay's greater accuracy and convenience compared to existing tests like amniocentesis, which comes with many risks, particularly for patients at risk of HDFN.

The publication also highlights how UNITY Fetal Antigen NIPT can also be used to nearly eliminate unnecessary prophylactic treatment for 40% of RhD-negative pregnancies. The assay's unique capability to accurately assess non-deletion RHD gene variants, which are more prevalent in non-European populations, underscores the test's applicability and validity across ethnically diverse populations. This capability reduces the assay no-call rate to 0.1%, significantly lower than any previous RhD assays and addresses any potential concerns against front-line RhD NIPT screening.

"At BillionToOne, we are uniquely positioned to do the unthinkable with genetic testing due to our QCT technology," said Oguzhan Atay, PhD, CEO of BillionToOne. "The published validation data for UNITY Fetal Antigen NIPT is a perfect example of this, ultimately setting a new standard for patients and providers in the management of HDFN." As stated in the publication, "the clinical implementation of NIPT can significantly improve the standard of care for both prevention of RhD alloimmunization and management of alloimmunization in pregnancy."

About the UNITY Fetal Antigen NIPT

The UNITY Fetal Antigen Test Screen was first launched in September 2022 for pregnant patients alloimmunized against RhD, C, c, E, K (Kell), and Fya (Duffy) red blood cell (RBC) antigens, and can be performed as early as 10 weeks of gestation. Using BillionToOne's proprietary molecular counting technology or Quantitative Counting TemplatesTM (QCTs), this NGS-based assay detects the presence or absence of the genetic variants that code for corresponding fetal antigens to accurately identify which patients are truly at highest risk for developing HDFN.  Since its launch, over 1,000 UNITY Fetal Antigen NIPT have been ordered for clinical use. About 60% of those patients received a "Not Detected" Fetal Antigen result, sparing the expecting parents from unnecessary follow-ups and undue anxiety.

About UNITY Fetal RhD NIPT

The UNITY RhD NIPT was launched in 2020 for pregnant patients with RhD-negative blood type at the gestational age of 10 weeks or higher. Up to 40% of RhD-negative pregnant individuals carry an RhD-negative fetus and do not need the administration of Rho(D) immune globulin. The QCT technology-based quantitative approach with NGS enables the assay to detect fetal RhD status both for the common RHD gene deletion and other RHD variants such as RHDΨ, significantly reducing the no-call rate while maintaining 100% sensitivity and specificity.

About BillionToOne

Headquartered in Menlo Park, California, BillionToOne is a precision diagnostics company on a mission to make molecular diagnostics more accurate, efficient, and accessible for everyone. The company's patented QCT™ molecular counter platform is the only multiplex technology that can accurately count DNA molecules at the single-molecule level.

Imagene Launches ImageneOI Platform on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure to Democratize AI-Based Molecular Profiling in Oncology
The ImageneOI rapid AI-based biomarker profiling platform significantly improves lung cancer patient outcomes, as demonstrated by a recently published case report.

ImageneOI Platform and Case Report

ImageneOI AI-based Molecular Profiling Platform on OCI, and the published case report of impacting patients' lives.

Imagene, an emerging leader in AI-based precision oncology, is proud to announce the launch of the ImageneOI platform on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). The innovative platform, supported by proven clinical benefits, sets a new paradigm in cancer diagnostics by enabling rapid AI-based molecular profiling from biopsy images alone, overcoming key barriers and limitations in current diagnostic processes. ImageneOI already proved its significant impact under research on treatment initiation and averting radiation for two cancer patients, as published in a recent case report in the Journal of Clinical Pathology.

"We're confident in selecting Oracle as our cloud provider and are pleased to join forces with Oracle in our mission to make advanced technologies drive better patient care," said Dean Bitan, co-founder and CEO of Imagene. "Oracle is not only delivering consistent, high-performance computing with widespread global reach, but its focus on the healthcare sector has played a crucial role in enabling us to bring this transformative service to the forefront of cancer diagnostics."

For AI inference computation and to process data at scale, Imagene partnered with Oracle to run its ImageneOI platform on OCI and will take advantage of OCI Supercluster and OCI AI infrastructure technology. OCI's cost-effective, high-performance computing enables the ImageneOI platform to offer rapid biomarker profiling and to deliver impressive performance of approximately two minutes from uploading a digitized biopsy image to receiving a biomarkers status report.

"Saving lives is technology's single most important use," said Safra Catz, CEO of Oracle. "We are proud that Oracle's highly performant and secure cloud infrastructure will help Imagene improve access to care, drive informed decisions, lower costs, and ultimately save lives."

ImageneOI aligns with oncology clinical guidelines that emphasize the importance of obtaining molecular testing for actionable cancer biomarkers before initiating treatment. This breakthrough technology paves the way for improved and personalized cancer care. It facilitates informed decision-making for optimal treatment strategies by reducing turnaround times from weeks to minutes.

The platform transforms cancer diagnosis by addressing a significant gap in the current healthcare landscape. In the United States, approximately 80 percent of cancer patients choose to receive treatment in community settings. In addition, 64 percent of lung cancer patients, which is the deadliest cancer, do not receive the optimal treatment mostly due to biomarker testing-related challenges and limited access to comprehensive Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS). Up to 30 percent of tested patients do not receive guidelines-recommended biomarkers testing results prior to first-line therapy initiation. This accessibility issue and under-tested populations presents a major obstacle to effective cancer treatment.

The pressing need and demand for rapid and accurate cancer diagnosis pose a significant challenge in advancing precision oncology. This challenge is highlighted by the projected rise in cancer incidence, lengthy turnaround times, and issues with tissue inadequacy. The accessibility of the ImageneOI platform on OCI makes it an invaluable rapid molecular profiling resource for research institutions and medical centers globally.

In conjunction with the launch, Imagene is initiating an Early Access Research Program. Interested parties are encouraged to get in touch for more information at [email protected].

My Animal: Amandla Stenberg horror movie earns R rating ahead of September release

My Animal: Amandla Stenberg horror movie earns R rating ahead of September release

The horror movie My Animal, starring Amandla Stenberg and Bobbi Salvör Menuez, has secured an R rating ahead of its September release

The horror romance My Animal – which stars Amandla Stenberg of Bodies Bodies Bodies (read our review of that one HERE) and Bobbi Salvör Menuez of Nocturnal Animals (which we reviewed at THIS LINK) – will be receiving a limited theatrical release on September 8th, with a digital release following on September 15th. With those dates right around the corner, the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association has gone ahead given the film an R rating for “language throughout, sexual content, nudity, some drug use and violence“.

My Animal is coming our way from Paramount Global Content Distribution. The feature directorial debut of Jacqueline Castel, who was working from a screenplay by first-time feature writer Jae Matthews, the film is set in a small northern town and tells the story of Heather, an outcast teenage hockey goalie (Menuez), who falls for the town’s newcomer (Stenberg), an alluring but tormented figure skater. As their relationship deepens, Heather’s growing desires clash with her darkest secret, forcing her to control the animal within.

And yes, those who have had the chance to watch My Animal already have confirmed that this is a werewolf story. So has director Castel, who provided the following statement: “My Animal is a story about inheritance: of what gets passed through our lineage and how that defines us as individuals. It is also a story about first love and how that can serve as a catalyst for radical change, revealing what we most need and what most needs healing within us.

Like Heather, I understand the quiet despair and isolation of being an outsider in a small town, and of rebelling against it in youth only to discover that the most treasured and distinctive aspects of my selfhood derive from the very things I attempted to reject. What made me different also defined and ultimately transformed me.

In Jae Matthew’s screenwriting, I found the pain and joy of our mirrored adolescent struggles, our complex family relations, and the difficulty of navigating our earliest and most formative relationships. The real battle we each waged in youth, and the one Heather’s character must also face, is finding the courage of self-acceptance and self-expression. Through the struggles of these characters we encounter what works and what does not in the quest for identity, authenticity, and self-actualization, and the courage we must summon in the face of personal crisis and discrimination. This classical, outsider framework translates beautifully to the mythology of the werewolf.

In My Animal, I invite the viewer to get lost in the otherness of Heather Anderson. In so doing, I not only compel the audience to feel connected to a character who at first may appear to have little in common with them, but also to learn the same lessons that she does: only by embracing the traits that make us outcasts, and even subject to scorn, do we learn to become fully ourselves.

My Animal was produced by Andrew Bronfman and Michael Solomon, with Stenberg and Menuez serving as executive producers.

Screenwriter Jae Matthews happens to be one half of the electronic music band Boy Harsher, which recently had songs on the soundtracks for the horror movies Terrifier 2 and Halloween Ends. Augustus Muller, the other half of the Boy Harsher duo, has composed the score for the film.

Does My Animal sound like a movie you’ll be watching in September? Are you glad to hear it has secured an R rating? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

Los Angeles Mission Helps Prepare Homeless Children to Start the New School Year at Its Third Annual Back-to-School Fair & Supply Giveaway

Boy Shopping at Back-to-School Event

Young boy wearing a red hat shopping for school supplies at a back-to-school giveaway sponsored by Los Angeles Mission.

On July 29, Los Angeles Mission, in collaboration with foster agencies Guardians of Love, Coco's Angels, and Inner Circle, launched its Third Annual Back-to-School Fair & Supply Giveaway. The event, which took place at Iglesia Cristiana Sembrando Esperanza, supported over 350 foster families currently in the foster care system.

"Our deepest desire is to ignite a spark of joy and readiness within the hearts of these children so they can eagerly embrace the arrival of the new school year," said Pastor Troy Vaughn, President and CEO of Los Angeles Mission. "Every student deserves to step into their educational journey with a heart filled with hope and the essential tools to thrive, irrespective of their financial circumstances."

The presenting sponsor CVS Health made a generous check presentation of $50,000. This gift will help kick-start mental health services at Los Angeles Mission and increase access for children and families experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County. The Project Health mobile van provided by CVS Health also helped make it an extra-healthy occasion, offering free physical and mental health screenings to those most vulnerable Angelenos. This donation is more than just a financial gift; it's a symbol of hope for the community.

"The Los Angeles Mission is such an incredible organization, working to ensure equitable access to the support and resources children and their families need to thrive," said Jeff Hermosillo, West Region President, Aetna, a CVS Health company. "We are helping to increase their impact to support the launch of Los Angeles Mission's mental health services program because we believe high-quality mental health services should be available to everyone and that mental health is just as important as physical health."

This resource fair featured free clothes, shoes, backpacks, food, school supplies, music, haircuts, manicures, and a range of activities for kids ages 0-17. Target, which set up a bespoke shopping experience, mobilized 50 employee volunteers to distribute much-needed back-to-school supplies.

"As parents, it is heartbreaking to witness the struggles that children in foster homes face when it comes to their education," noted Kinikki Fullerwood, CEO of Guardians of Love. "Many of these precious kids dread going to school due to the lack of brand-new clothes or trendy items, fearing they will be singled out or bullied. The Back-to-School Fair aims to uplift and support these children, providing encouragement and igniting a flame of motivation within them, allowing them to thrive academically."

Race To Feed is a program launched by Los Angeles Mission in October 2021. It is a response to food insecurity which helps individuals stabilize and reinvest resources in their communities. Since its inception, this program has provided over four million meals to struggling families across L.A. County. Through this program, attendees left the back-to-school event with a full week of groceries.

Vaughn concluded by stating "The Los Angeles Mission is grateful to all of our partners, including Supervisor Hilda Solis, Walmart, Chick-Fil-A, CVS Health, Project Health, Target, Guardians of Love, Coco's Angels, and Inner Circle, who together made this event a major success."
