Marvel Studios VFX artists vote to unionize

VFX artists at Marvel Studios vote to unionize and seek to be represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).

VFX artists at Marvel Studios announced today that they have voted to unionize and say that they want to be represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).

Over the years, we’ve heard horror stories from Marvel VFX artists about the poor working conditions, where much of the crew are overworked and underpaid, so this move to unionize should come as no surprise. “We are witnessing an unprecedented wave of solidarity that’s breaking down old barriers in the industry and proving we’re all in this fight together,” IATSE President Matthew Loeb said. “That doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Entertainment workers everywhere are sticking up for each other’s rights, that’s what our movement is all about. I congratulate these workers on taking this important step and using their collective voice.

This unionization effort marks the first time that VFX professionals have joined together “to demand the same rights and protections as their unionized colleagues in the film industry.” While positions such as “production designers/art directors, camera operators, sound, editors, hair and makeup artists, costumes/wardrobe, script supervisors, grips, lighting, props and paint, among other have historically been represented by IATSE, workers in VFX classifications historically have not.

For almost half a century, workers in the visual effects industry have been denied the same protections and benefits their coworkers and crewmates have relied upon since the beginning of the Hollywood film industry,” said Mark Patch, VFX organizer for IATSE, in a statement. “This is a historic first step for VFX workers coming together with a collective voice demanding respect for the work we do.

VFX coordinator Bella Huffman added, “Turnaround times don’t apply to us, protected hours don’t apply to us, and pay equity doesn’t apply to us. Visual effects must become a sustainable and safe department for everyone who’s suffered far too long and for all newcomers who need to know they won’t be exploited.” Over the years, the amount of VFX shots in movies have greatly increased, from a few dozen, to hundreds, and even thousands, with some movies including some manner of VFX work in every single shot.

It’s no coincidence that this move to unionize takes place during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. “We are witnessing an unprecedented wave of solidarity that’s breaking down old barriers in the industry and proving we’re all in this fight together. That doesn’t happen in a vacuum,” Matthew Loeb said. “Entertainment workers everywhere are sticking up for each other’s rights, that’s what our movement is all about. I congratulate these workers on taking this important step and using their collective voice.” The workers are asking for the election to be held as early as August 21st.

Xolo Maridueña wants 12 more years of Blue Beetle

Xolo Maridueña wants 12 more years of Blue Beetle

Xolo Maridueña wants to do 12 more years of Blue Beetle and is excited to see how his character might fit into the DCU.

As one of the last projects of the former DCEU, it remains to be seen what the future has in store for Blue Beetle, but James Gunn has said that while Superman: Legacy will be the first movie in the DCU, Blue Beetle will be the first DCU character. That would suit Xolo Maridueña just fine, as he told Entertainment Weekly that he wants “to do 12 more years of Blue Beetle.

Xolo Maridueña added that he has spoken with James Gunn and Peter Safran about the future of Blue Beetle. “Yeah, I have had the chance to speak with them,” Maridueña said. “They’re really happy for our project and so excited for us to kick off what is to eventually become the next DCU. But with this movie, really what we wanted to highlight was Jaime’s story and the Reyes family’s story. I’m excited to see what they have in mind and how Blue Beetle and the rest of his family might loop into the rest. But my heart is already so fulfilled with this movie. If we do 20 of these movies and 40 cameos or if it’s just this one, what’s most exciting to me is the opportunity for people to see it and have little kids everywhere saying, ‘Oh my gosh, this guy looks like me. I can be a hero, too.’

The actor also spoke of getting to try on the Blue Beetle costume for the very first time. “I remember genuinely believing that I was a superhero,” he said. “It makes your posture different! It was really fantastic. Also, I didn’t really know what to expect going into a big superhero movie like this. I didn’t know if it was going to be the type where we were going to be on a green screen for four months or what. So, getting to try on the suit for the first time and see that everything was practical, I was so excited.

As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab,” reads the official Blue Beetle synopsis. “When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle.

In addition to Xolo Maridueña, Blue Beetle also stars Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood) as Jaime’s grandmother, Nana, Damían Alcázar (Narcos: Mexico) as his father, Elpidia Carrillo (Mayans M.C.) as his mother, Bruna Marquezine (God Save the King) as Jenny Kord, Raoul Max Trujillo (Sicario) as Carapax, with Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking) as Victoria Kord, and George Lopez (Rio) as Jaime’s Uncle Rudy. The film also stars Belissa Escobedo (American Horror Stories) as Jaime’s sister, Milagro, and Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows) as Dr. Sanchez. Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) directed Blue Beetle from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala).

Blue Beetle will hit theaters on August 18th.

Shoreline Recovery Center and Park Mental Health Staff Teach Male Clients Self-Awareness to Gain Insight Into Their Addiction, Recovery

Shoreline Recovery Center and Park Mental Health Staff Teach Male Clients Self-Awareness to Gain Insight Into Their Addiction, Recovery

Before getting to rehab, the level of self-awareness and insight into a person's addiction varies based on a combination of factors. This includes the person's substance-use history, related personal consequences, and mental health diagnosis, according to Park Mental Health Program Director Mikayla Weathers.

"There's an increase in denial when a client struggles with a thought disorder as they may not be in full touch with reality, which diminishes their ability to have insight until they are properly medicated and stabilized," she said.

While battling addiction, many patients are also battling mental illnesses. In fact, Weathers said, most people use substances as a way to cope with an underlying struggle including anxiety, depression, trauma, loneliness, auditory hallucinations, bipolar symptoms, and many other factors. Depression specifically is referred to as an invisible condition because its effects can go unnoticed, leading to profound suffering and death by those battling it.

"Similar to depression, addiction is isolating and can take everything away from someone, leaving them lonely and hopeless," Weathers said. "Depression is part of post-acute withdrawal symptoms, so as a person begins to 'come down' from a high, they often feel every symptom of depression, which leads them to using again as a way to avoid it."

What many consider to be recreational drug use still has negative consequences on a person's behavior and their overall health. "For those who have had multiple overdoses due to opioid addiction, there's been a sense of desensitization and almost an acceptance of overdose," Weathers said. "For those who don't understand addiction, a huge misconception is 'it won't happen to me.'"

However, with the ongoing opioid epidemic and fentanyl overdoses in the U.S., there is no longer the widespread belief that "experimenting with drugs" is a benign activity. That's because people who aren't addicted to drugs — individuals trying it for the first time or as casual users — are also overdosing.

To that end, Park Mental Health and Shoreline Recovery Center work hard to break the stigma by normalizing the struggle. In order to help patients become more aware of their disease, themselves and their ability to recover, its staff has created an internal curriculum that focuses on all facets of recovery, including addiction and mental health.

"Using this, clients can receive a well-rounded approach to psychology and are challenged to look inward so they can relate to topics offered throughout treatment," Weathers said. "For example, as an all-men's facility, staff works hard to acknowledge and challenge gender norms as it relates to males and the gender role of 'having to be tough' or 'not show emotion,' as research has shown this keeps men suffering in silence."

Clients are also invited to participate in psycho-educational groups while learning from personal experiences, which encourages them to become invested in their lived experience as far as investing in their own recovery.

So good that the State of Arkansas passed a law in 2017 to begin offering it to state employees to avoid knee surgery. Following that lead, Dr. Raker began offering it to the public for the same reasons as the athletes: to avoid shoulder and knee surgery or replacement.

Regenerative medicine is proving to be a game-changer in the world of healthcare. It will reduce the number of shoulder and knee replacements by 80%, usually with one or two simple shots. Cost is 1/10th the cost of surgery with no painful rehab or downtime at all.

Adam DeVine: Marvel ruined comedy

Adam DeVine: Marvel ruined comedy

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has made its implementation of comedy a trademark, but Adam DeVine suggests they have ruined the genre.

Outside of its CGI battles, stacked casts and casual disregard that not every series within the franchise needs its own franchise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be best known for its implementation of comedy. Certainly the MCU has some legitimately hilarious moments, with some movies landing the laughs better than others (Thor: Ragnarok and the Guardians movies tend to get the most praise here). But according to actor Adam DeVine, who is no stranger to the comedy game, Marvel has outright ruined the genre.

Speaking on the This Past Weekend podcast (per Variety), DeVine said, “You watch comedies nowadays and you’re like, this is not a f*cking comedy…Where are the jokes? Where are the bits? There’s still good [comedy] shows, but movie comedy…it’s hard. My theory: I think Marvel ruined it.” That feels like a bold statement, but DeVine defended it as such: “I feel like superhero movies ruined comedies because you go to the theater and you expect to watch something that cost $200 million to make, and comedy movies aren’t that. So you’re like, ‘Why would I spend the same amount of money to go watch a little comedy in the theater if I can spend that and watch something that is worth $200 million?’ And they still make those movies kind of funny, like, ‘Oh my god, is that raccoon talking? This is hilarious!’ Which it is, but it’s not a real comedy.”

You can see what DeVine is trying to say, but the actor – who currently stars in The Out-Laws (which, based on reviews, seems to be less of a comedy than intended…) – does almost seem to suggest that a movie can’t neatly fall into two separate categories: if something is made to be a comedy it can’t have a big budget; if something costs hundreds of millions of dollars to make, it can’t be labeled a comedy. As far as the “real comedy” statement, it wouldn’t be outlandish for a Marvel fan to place Ragnarok, the Guardians trilogy or Ant-Man in that realm.

Do you agree or disagree with Adam DeVine’s statement that Marvel has killed comedy? What is the funniest Marvel movie? Give us your take in the comments section below!

A Disturbance in the Force (Fantasia) Review

A Disturbance in the Force (Fantasia) Review

A Disturbance in the Force takes a look behind the scenes of the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special from 1978.

PLOT: Behind the scenes of the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special.

REVIEW: Young people today have no idea how hard it was to see the Star Wars Holiday Special in the days before the internet. I remember only being aware of the Holiday Special in the mid-nineties thanks to the occasional mention in Starlog or Sci-Fi Universe. In about 1996, some friends and I attended a Star Wars Convention in Montreal, and the big attraction was that they would be screening the Holiday Special in full on someone’s bootleg tape. My pals and I were so excited, but after all the years of reading about it and dreaming of what it could be like, we walked out after ten minutes. Nine minutes of unsubtitled Wookie was enough to turn us off, and to this day, I don’t think I’ve ever actually sat through the whole thing.

The fact that it was made at all makes it an intriguing pop culture footnote, and the new doc, A Disturbance in the Force, does a great job explaining just how the whole thing came together. While a variety show centred around the Star Wars universe probably sounds like coked-up nonsense, it wasn’t that unusual for the seventies. At the time, these types of shows were riding high. The format was so popular they even made The Brady Bunch Hour (an all-singing, all-dancing Brady Bunch reunion) and some shows, like Donny & Marie, were enormous. Watching them, now shows like Wayne Newton at Sea World (with special guest Shamu) seem ridiculous, but hey, this was the era of the leisure suit and bell bottoms.

As the movie does a good job illustrating, the Star Wars Holiday Special is bad, but it’s not even close to the worst variety show from the era. Heck, it’s not even the worst Star Wars variety show, with them unearthing the now infamous Donny & Marie Star Wars Special that featured Kris Kristofferson as Han Solo and R2-D2 singing (via his beeps and boops). If you’ve never seen it – well, here you go:

While the makes of A Disturbance in the Force (Jeremy Coon and Steve Kozak) weren’t able to nab Mark Hamill or Harrison Ford for an interview, there’s enough vintage footage of them discussing the special floating around to make due (including a funny bit by the late Carrie Fisher) as people have been asking them about it for years. As far as new interviews go, probably the biggest coup is they got Donny Osmond to talk about his own special’s take off on Star Wars, and he seems pretty good-humoured and self-deprecating about the whole thing. They also got Bruce Villanch, one of the show’s writers, and many other people involved. Most seem to blame the involvement of Ken and Mitzi Welch, writers of the Carol Burnett Show who knew nothing about Star Wars but A LOT about old-timers like Harvey Korman and Bea Arthur, which is why they showed up here.

The documentary acknowledges the weird place the Holiday Special has in the current Star Wars canon as Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, who are fans, worked a bunch of references into The Mandalorian, including a “Life Day” mention. Most folks involved, even those who profess to hate the show, like the late, great Gibert Gottfried, have some lingering affection for it. The documentary also takes time to praise “The Story of the Faithful Wookie,” which introduced Boba Fett and is the only part of the special you can currently find on Disney Plus. One thing’s for sure – the fact that Lucasfilm never put it out officially only enhanced its cult status, and as long as there’s any media, but the internet or even video tapes, it’ll always exist.
