Paul Reubens, Pee-wee Herman actor, dies at 70 after a private battle with cancer

Paul Reubens, Pee-wee Herman actor, dies at 70 after a private battle with cancer

Paul Reubens, the actor best known for portraying the child-like character Pee-wee Herman, has passed away from cancer at age 70.

Today’s secret word is sadness! Paul Reubens, the gifted actor and comedian best known for portraying Pee-wee Herman, died on Sunday at 70. According to Reubens’ estate, the red bowtie-loving ball of energy passed away after a private battle with cancer.

“Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years,” Reubens wrote in an Instagram message posted to fans. “I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”

“Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness,” wrote Reubens’ estate in an Instagram post “Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”

Where do I begin? I can scarcely think of many actors that shine from my childhood as brightly as Reubens. The word “icon” comes to mind. Still, that needs to be more significant for this titan of entertainment. Reubens joined the Los Angeles troupe The Groundlings in the 1970s, bringing his signature off-kilter comedy brand to the stage. In 1982, Reubens debuted a character he’d been developing for years, Pee-wee Herman. Reubens delighted audiences with racy gags, innuendo, and knee-slapping one-liners in his light gray suit, red bowtie, and flip hairstyle. The show sold out for five months before HBO produced a special about Reubens’ daring comedic approach.

In 1995, Reubens starred in Tim Burton’s Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, featuring the title character on a search-and-rescue mission to find his stolen bicycle. Pee-wee’s Big Adventure did gangbusters at the box office, with the feature eventually reaching cult status among disaffected youth. Big Adventure‘s sequel, Big Top Pee-wee, was released in 1988 to less acclaim. However, Between 1986 and 1990, Reubens starred in the children’s program Pee-wee’s Playhouse, a variety show featuring notable cameos from Laurence Fishburne (Cowboy Curtis), Phil Hartman (Captain Carl), Natasha Lyonne (Opal), Jimmy Smits (Johnny Wilson), and a neverending roster of celebrity guests.

After several quiet years, Reubens re-emerged with one of my favorite comedies of all time, Kinka Usher’s Mystery Men. Reubens plays the gross-out hero Spleen in the quirky superhero adaptation. With the power of super-flatulence, Spleen wields his farts with unmatched precision and grave consequences. I’m not kidding when I say Mystery Men is one of my favorite films. I’ve seen it more times than I can count and love it more with each watch.

Reubens was more than his Pee-wee persona. The larger-than-life actor also voiced Max, a spacecraft’s wise-cracking interface in Flight of the Navigator, Amilyn the vampire in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lock in Henry Selick and Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, Derek Foreal in Blow, Sir Terrence in episodes of Reno 911! Miami, the Desk Clerk in Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie, and much more!

We here at JoBlo wish Mr. Reubens safe travels to the Great Hereafter. Many childhoods at this site would not have been the same without Reubens (and, by extension, Pee-wee) making us laugh while helping shape our bizarre sense of humor. We wish Mr. Reubens’ family, friends, and fans love and healing.

Francis Ford Coppola says Barbenheimer points to “golden age” of moviegoing

Francis Ford Coppola says Barbenheimer points to “golden age” of moviegoing

Coppola has pointed to Barbie and Oppenheimer’s box office success as signs people want to see non-franchise movies on the big screen.

It seems so rare that the Movie Brats – the batch of New Hollywood directors who changed the game forever (for both good and bad, depending on your perspective) in the late ‘60s and ‘70s – have something positive to say about today’s cinema. But one, Francis Ford Coppola, thinks we could be in a renaissance for big screen movies, offering praise for the box office reception of, yes, Barbenheimer.

In an Instagram AMA session (yes, Coppola has Instagram; no, we can’t confirm that Sofia taught him how to use it, although he did confirm he was the one in charge of the AMA), the maestro said that the collective turnout at the movies for both Barbie and Oppenheimer, which have pulled in around $1.2 billion worldwide total so far, is a sign that people don’t just want to see major franchises on the big screen. “I have yet to see them, but the fact that people are filling big theaters to see them and that they are neither ‘sequels’ nor ‘prequels’… no number attached to them meaning they are true one-off’s is victory for Cinema.”

Based on the monumental turnout for these movies, Coppola said he is beyond hopeful for the state of the cinemagoing experience, adding, “My hunch is that we’re on the verge of a golden age wonderfully illuminating cinema seen in large theaters.” Here’s hoping his passion project, the $100+ million Megalopolis, can find the proper audience to recoup its budget, which is reportedly being financed by Coppola himself.

The 84-year-old Coppola has been outspoken against certain modern movies before, criticizing the likes of Marvel because “we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration,” which he says such fare doesn’t offer. While he did continue to dismiss franchise flicks in his remarks, he is at least moving in a more positive direction with his take on the state of the box office.

Do you agree with Francis Ford Coppola that we could be heading towards a “golden age” of going to the movies? Where do you think Barbie and Oppenheimer will land on the top highest-grossing movies of 2023?

The Assistance Fund Opens New Program for Biliary Tract Cancer
Financial Assistance From The Assistance Fund Now Available for Eligible People Living With Biliary Tract Cancer

The Assistance Fund, an independent charitable patient assistance organization that helps patients and families facing high medical out-of-pocket costs, today announced the launch of a new copay assistance program for people living with biliary tract cancer. The program is designed to help eligible individuals pay for their out-of-pocket medical expenses related to biliary tract cancer, such as copays, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Biliary tract cancers impact the gallbladder, bile ducts, and ampulla of Vater.[1] The cancers are difficult to diagnose; by the time symptoms like jaundice, fatigue, and belly pain appear, the cancer has advanced.

"Because reaching a diagnosis can be so difficult for people living with biliary tract cancers, ensuring their immediate access to the treatment is critical," said Danielle Vizcaino, President and CEO at The Assistance Fund. "Our Biliary Tract Cancer Copay Assistance Program will remove the financial hurdles of this process for so many patients and their families and will allow them to focus on improving their health."

"As a family member of someone who faced a biliary tract cancer diagnosis, I am intimately familiar with how daunting the journey is to finding the right treatment and navigating access to it," said Stacie Lindsey, Founder & CEO of the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. "With the launch of its Biliary Tract Cancer Copay Assistance Program, The Assistance Fund has forged a path for hundreds of patients to get the treatment they need and the improved quality of life it will bring."

NCQA Unveils New Features for Long-Term Services and Supports Programs

NCQA Unveils New Features for Long-Term Services and Supports Programs
Updates help states, health plans, managed care organizations and long-term care facilities achieve inclusive, equitable and person-centered care

The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) today announced new features for its Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) Distinction and the Accreditation of Case Management for LTSS programs. The program enhancements and new standards help organizations managing long-term care deliver high-quality, equitable care that aligns with state requirements and meets the evolving needs of their communities.

"NCQA's Accreditation of Case Management for LTSS and LTSS Distinction in Health Plan Accreditation have been the industry standard for organizations administering LTSS since we launched the programs in 2016," said NCQA President Margaret E. O'Kane. "Today the population is aging, and states are looking to increase accountability, improve quality and promote cost-effective delivery of long-term care services outside the traditional hospital setting. It's time to update our standards to reflect and support healthcare organizations eager to provide equitable, high-quality care to people in the environment that is best for them."

Case Management-LTSS Accreditation

NCQA CM-LTSS Accreditation is designed for organizations that coordinate LTSS for populations with complex needs. Long-term care organizations need assurance that their partners can coordinate care effectively across medical, behavioral and social services and help keep people in their preferred setting—often, their home.

Enhancements include scoring aligned with NCQA Health Plan Accreditation, the creation of an interim survey to provide a guide path for community-based organizations to earn accreditation followed by a full survey, as well as updates to care assessment, clinical integration and coordination. These enhancements support the identification of sub-populations to inform how programs are structured to meet varied needs, new health equity standards and data collection, standardized person-centered goals and recognition for high achievement.

Earning NCQA accreditation of CM-LTSS can help organizations become more efficient and focus on coordinated care, training and measurement to reduce errors and duplicated services. Additionally, the standards can help improve communication between stakeholders that coordinate care, focus on person-centered services which lead to better care planning and monitoring and support contracting needs to align with state needs.

LTSS Distinction

NCQA LTSS Distinction provides a person-centered, comprehensive and standardized evaluation of organizations delivering managed long-term services and supports. LTSS Distinction is designed for organizations that manage both medical care and LTSS for their members. Earning LTSS Distinction can help organizations improve operational efficiencies and improve care communication between individuals, caregivers, providers and payers while reducing errors and duplicated services.

Enhancements include scoring aligned with Health Plan Accreditation standards, the creation of an interim survey to provide a glide path for community-based organizations to earn accreditation followed by a full survey, as well as updates to the care assessment, standardized person-centered goals, and new requirements for health equity, data collection, and recognition for clinical integration and coordination. These enhancements inform how programs are structured to meet varied LTSS population needs and meet or exceed state requirements.

About NCQA

NCQA is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. NCQA Accredits and Certifies a wide range of healthcare organizations. It also recognizes clinicians and practices in key areas of performance. NCQA's Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®) is the most widely used performance measurement tool in health care. The organization received the prestigious James W. Rouse Excellence in Diversity Award for demonstrating a commitment to promoting a diverse, healthy workplace. Help Improve Athletic Performance With Watercress

Help Improve Athletic Performance With Watercress
Nature's Most Nutrient-Dense Food

The optimal diet for an athlete includes watercress, says B&W Quality Growers. This healthy, flavorful, leafy green is loaded with essential nutrients and can protect athletes from damage caused by vigorous exercise.

Watercress is the most nutrient-dense food on the planet and is the only food to get a perfect score from ANDI and the CDC index rankings. Watercress contains antioxidants and amino acids. Antioxidants are the body's defense against damage caused by free radicals. Amino acids are the essential elements of protein, assisting in digestion, tissue growth, and hormone and neurotransmitter production, creating an energy source, promoting healthy skin, hair, and nails, bolstering our immune system, and helping to maintain regular digestion. These incredible benefits make amino acids an essential part of an athletic routine.

Free radicals are decidedly unstable compounds that the body naturally produces during rest, exercise, predominantly strenuous activity, and when the body converts food into energy. Individuals can also be exposed to free radicals through sunlight, x-rays, car exhaust, cigarette smoke, air pollution, and industrial chemicals. Free radicals are necessary for life and muscle functioning and are thought to promote adaptations to exercise.

However, an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants can cause oxidative stress, contributing to cell damage. Oxidative stress delays muscle recovery, contributes to muscle damage, and is linked to numerous diseases. Eating an antioxidant-rich leafy green diet packed with watercress can promote recovery from exercise, decrease the likelihood of muscle damage, and lower the risk of several chronic diseases.

Watercress may be remarkably beneficial as it's packed with abundant nutrients. Studies have shown that athletes who consume watercress two hours before exhaustive exercise develop lower levels of DNA damage and lipid peroxidation, which can lead to cell damage, compared to those who did not eat watercress before a workout. Researchers also found that eating a serving of watercress daily for two months decreased DNA damage and lipid peroxidation. This means athletes benefit from strenuous exercise with less potential for tissue damage.

Get juiced up on that leafy green goodness daily by adding watercress to salads, smoothies, sandwiches, wraps, omelets, pizza, and more.

For more on the most nutrient-dense food, visit B&W Quality Growers.

B&W Quality Growers has been farming responsibly since 1870. We're among the largest growers of distinctive leafy greens, including watercress, arugula, spinach, and ong choy. We sustainably grow, pack, and ship the highest quality distinctive leafy greens, providing well-being for our consumers and value for our customers. We've done this with zero product recalls and aim to provide a healthier, more flavorful world using premium leaves in everyday recipes.
