Swamp Thing: James Mangold sees DC adaptation as a Gothic horror movie

Writer/director James Mangold is approaching his DC Comics adaptation Swamp Thing as a standalone horror movie

While doing the press rounds for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, James Mangold (whose previous credits include The Wolverine and Logan) is looking ahead to the next franchise films he’ll be working on: the Star Wars prequel Dawn of the Jedi and the DC Comics adaptation Swamp Thing… but Mangold told Variety that he doesn’t have a franchise mindset when he approaches projects like this. For example, he doesn’t see Swamp Thing as just one chapter in the huge DC Universe, but as its own standalone story – and not a superhero movie, but a horror movie.

Talking about the idea of franchise building, Mangold said, “The amount of lore and Easter eggs and fan service starts to become antithetical to any of this stuff at a certain point. It isn’t storytelling anymore. It’s large-scale advertising.” So when it comes to Swamp Thing: “While I’m sure DC views Swamp Thing as a franchise, I would be viewing it as a very simple, clean, Gothic horror movie about this man/monster.

Mangold says he had been thinking of making “a kind of Frankenstein movie” for years, so when he heard that James Gunn and Peter Safran were taking control of the DC Comics adaptations at Warner Bros., he put in a call to suggest himself for the job of making Swamp Thing. “Just doing my own thing with this, just a standalone.

While Swamp Thing is part of the first wave of DC movies Gunn and Safran are overseeing – as they call it, “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” – the project doesn’t have a release date. Gunn’s own Superman: Legacy will kick off Chapter One on July 11, 2025, so it’s looking like Mangold will be making Dawn of the Jedi before Swamp Thing. Producer Kathleen Kennedy expects the Star Wars project to move forward quickly as soon as the writers strike is over – but in the meantime, Mangold will be working on the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet. That starts filming in August.

Are you glad to hear that James Mangold sees Swamp Thing as a standalone horror movie? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

12 to Midnight: Robert Bronzi, Daniel Roebuck, Sadie Katz, Tito Ortiz star in werewolf thriller

Charles Bronson look-alike Robert Bronzi stars in the werewolf thriller 12 to Midnight alongside Daniel Roebuck, Sadie Katz, and Tito Ortiz

Forty years ago, Charles Bronson starred in a serial killer thriller called 10 to Midnight. Now Bronson look-alike Robert Bronzi has taken the lead in a thriller called 12 to Midnight… but Bronzi is going to have to face off with a supernatural threat in this one. The villain in 12 to Midnight is a werewolf!

Currently filming in California and the coal regions of northeast Pennsylvania (including the infamous town of Centralia, which served as inspiration for Silent Hill), 12 to Midnight is being directed by Mark Savage (Purgatory Road) from a screenplay he crafted with Joe Knetter, producer Jeff Miller, and cast member Tom Parnell. Based on a story by Miller, the film concerns a detective, kicked off the force and despondent after the murder of his wife drives him to drink, who is asked back to the force when a new string of murders seem connected to his wife’s, and the killer appears to be taunting him. Only the killer may be superhuman, likely a breed of werewolf.

Bronzi is joined in the cast by Daniel Roebuck, Sadie Katz, and UFC champion Tito Ortiz, as well as Tristan Ott, Evan Strand, Patrick Voss Davis, Juliet Biscotti, A.C. Bernardi, Sarah Cugini, Searra Sawka, Destiny Brown, Valerie Bittner, Eric Francis Melaragni, the aforementioned Tom Parnell, and Helene Udy from the original My Bloody Valentine.

Miller is producing 12 to Midnight with Robert Savakinus. Parnell serves as executive producer with Ronnie D. Lee and Robert Michael Ryan. Savage is co-executive producer, with Beth Clausnitzer as the associate producer. Michael Su is the cinematographer, and Oliver Poser is supervising the special makeup FX. A co-production between Millman Productions, Cannon Fire Productions, Delirium, Ron Lee Productions, and Salem House Films, the film is being made with assistance from the Anthracite Cultural Board. Miller is handling the distribution sales.

Miller provided the following statement: “With this great cast, and amazing locations in both California and Pennsylvania, we’re making an exciting movie with twists on the detective genre as well as the werewolf film.”

This movie sounds like a good time to me, so I’m looking forward to seeing how it’s going to turn out.

Medicaid Innovation Collaborative Announces Companies Selected for 2023 Social Determinants of Health Showcase and Launch of Tech-Enabled Solutions Pilot Program

Medicaid Innovation Collaborative Announces Companies Selected for 2023 Social Determinants of Health Showcase and Launch of Tech-Enabled Solutions Pilot Program
Pilot Program supported by a grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust

The Medicaid Innovation Collaborative (MIC), a program of Acumen America, aims to advance innovations that address health inequities in Medicaid. Through cross-state collaboration, in-depth understanding of the issues facing Medicaid enrollees, and technical assistance, state Medicaid programs and managed care organizations (MCOs) collaborate to advance health equity by deploying tech-enabled innovations.

In a competitive Request for Information, MIC highlighted companies with high-impact solutions to address the social determinants of health (SDOH) for people on Medicaid. A committee representing state Medicaid agencies, MCOs, providers, community representatives, and experts selected finalists from a pool of 100+ applicants. With the opportunity to be considered for contracting, finalists presented to MCOs and state Medicaid departments in a showcase.

Tech-Enabled SDOH Solutions Pilot Program launch

In July 2023, MIC will open applications for a Tech-Enabled SDOH Solutions Pilot Program, which is supported by a $500,000 grant to Acumen America from the Helmsley Charitable Trust. Funding will provide the opportunity for MCOs and state Medicaid departments from New York, Kentucky, and Iowa to pilot and evaluate selected solutions from the 2023 SDOH Showcase.

Given the high prevalence of Medicaid beneficiaries living with a chronic condition, the Pilot Program will focus on solutions for Medicaid recipients and would include people living with insulin-requiring diabetes (IRD) as a test case to build evidence to support their adoption more broadly across states.

Credello: Americans Are Falling Way Behind on Their Bills

0
Credello: Americans Are Falling Way Behind on Their Bills

Credello: Americans are struggling to keep up with their car, credit card and mortgage payments these days, according to a report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The report revealed that the share of debt balances that became at least 90 days delinquent in the first quarter of 2023 was 1.08%, up from 0.71% year-over-year.

What counts as a delinquent payment?

So, you're late paying a couple of bills. Will that automatically translate into delinquency on your credit report? A delinquent payment refers to a payment that is overdue or unpaid beyond the agreed-upon due date or grace period. When a borrower fails to make the required payment on time, it is considered a delinquency. This can apply to various types of financial obligations, such as loans, credit card bills, mortgages, utility bills, or any other contractual payment.

Lenders and creditors usually have procedures in place to address delinquent payments. These may involve sending reminders, assessing late fees, reporting delinquencies to credit bureaus, and, in more severe cases, initiating collection efforts or legal actions to recover the outstanding amount. Delinquent payments can negatively impact a person's credit history and credit score, making it more challenging to obtain credit in the future.

If you're falling behind on bill payments, here's what you need to know about the possible impact on your financial future.

Does delinquency show up on your credit report?

The good news is, missing payments does not automatically result in the immediate reporting of delinquency on your credit report. The process of reporting delinquency to credit bureaus typically involves a series of steps and timeframes. Here's a general outline of how it works:

  1. Missed Payment: When you miss a payment, it does not immediately show up as a delinquency on your credit report. Initially, the creditor or lender may send reminders or notifications to inform you about the missed payment and request payment.
  2. Grace Period: Many lenders and creditors provide a grace period after the due date during which you can make the payment without incurring any penalties or reporting. The length of the grace period varies depending on the creditor and the terms of your agreement.
  3. Delinquency Threshold: If you fail to make the payment within the grace period, the creditor may consider the payment delinquent. However, they may not report it to the credit bureaus immediately. Typically, a certain number of missed payments are required before they report the delinquency.
  4. Reporting to Credit Bureaus: Once the delinquency threshold is reached, the creditor may report the delinquent payment to one or more credit bureaus. This reporting can negatively affect your credit score and credit history.
  5. Impact on Credit Report: Once reported, the delinquent payment will generally appear on your credit report as a negative item. The specific information provided may include the date of the delinquency, the amount owed, the number of missed payments, and the current status of the account.

It's important to note that different creditors may have varying reporting practices, and the exact timeline can differ. Additionally, some creditors may offer options to make partial payments or negotiate alternative arrangements to avoid delinquency reporting.

The impact of foreclosure on your credit report

Now, things can get more serious if you're unable to keep up with mortgage payments. Foreclosure is a legal process where a lender takes possession of property from a borrower who has failed to make mortgage payments. It occurs when the borrower defaults on the loan, and the lender initiates proceedings to recover the debt by selling the property. Foreclosure can lead to the borrower losing their home, damaging their credit, and potentially facing eviction.

Does a foreclosure stay on your credit report? Yes, for a significant period of time. It is considered a severe negative item and can have a substantial impact on your credit history and credit score. In general, a foreclosure can remain on your credit report for up to seven years from the date it was first reported. During this time, it can make it more challenging to obtain new credit, secure favorable interest rates, or qualify for certain financial opportunities.

As time passes and you demonstrate responsible credit behavior, the impact of the foreclosure on your credit score may gradually diminish, but it will still be visible to potential lenders and creditors reviewing your credit history.

New 2023 Diversion Digest From Protenus Spotlights the Prevalence of Drug Diversion in Healthcare
Review signals one in 100 healthcare workers diverting drugs

Protenus

Protenus logo

Protenus, provider of the leading healthcare compliance analytics platform empowering healthcare to eliminate risk, today released its new 2023 Diversion Digest report that details the ongoing misuse of drugs by healthcare workers and the effects of drug diversion on healthcare organizations, their employees, and patients.

The research, published in the 2023 Diversion Digest, focuses on the review and analysis of publicly available data on current drug diversion incidents and trends involving healthcare workers. As found in the full report, an estimated one in every 100 healthcare workers is likely diverting drugs from healthcare organizations.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines drug diversion as, "When prescription medicines are obtained or used illegally, it is called drug diversion. Healthcare providers who steal prescription medicines or controlled substances such as opioids for their own use put patients at risk1."  With the ongoing trend of drug misuse and diversion, healthcare organizations must look for ways to identify, detect and prevent drug diversion as quickly as possible, while also supporting members of their workforce with substance abuse disorders and protecting patients from the harm diversion can create.

"The underlying threat of drug diversion in healthcare will always exist. However, healthcare organizations can optimize their efforts to detect as much diversion as possible by implementing proactive monitoring strategies such as an artificial intelligence (AI)  powered surveillance solution," stated Adam Beeler, PharmD, MS, Director of Pharmacy Services at Protenus.

Previous installments of the Diversion Digest were aimed to educate readers about how drug diversion occurs and ways to prevent it. But only so much can be done to prevent drug diversion. The purpose of the 2023 Diversion Digest is to provide a rational estimation of the prevalence of drug diversion among healthcare workers so that organizations can develop risk mitigation strategies to detect diversion that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Laurel Road: Why PSLF is Worth the Effort

Laurel Road: Why PSLF is Worth the Effort

Laurel Road: Recent data from the Federal Reserve reveals that Americans currently owe a staggering $1.7 trillion in student loan debt as of Q1 2023. For many Americans, it's understandable that this burden can feel overwhelming and could impact them for the rest of their lives.

Fortunately, there is a potential silver lining for public service workers in the form of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. Created specifically for borrowers who work for a U.S. government organization or a qualifying nonprofit, this program offers the possibility of having federal student loans forgiven after 10 years of repayment amounting to 120 qualifying payments.

However, it's important to note that not all public service workers qualify for PSLF. It's important to gain a thorough understanding of the PSLF program's requirements and eligibility criteria to determine whether it's worth the effort to pursue it.

What exactly is PSLF and who qualifies for it?

PSLF is a federal program established under the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007. Its aim is to encourage graduates to pursue careers in public service by providing loan forgiveness after 10 years of service. This program specifically targets individuals working in the public sector, including the U.S. federal, state, or tribal government, or qualifying nonprofit organizations.

However, it's also worth mentioning that not all student loans qualify for PSLF.

Exploring the pros and cons of PSLF

The primary advantage of the PSLF program is that it alleviates the burden of student loan debt for borrowers who work in public service. Once they enroll in the program and meet all requirements for the 10-year duration of the repayment period, federal student loan borrowers can have a light at the end of the tunnel - their remaining student loan debt could potentially be forgiven after 120 qualifying payments. For those passionate about having a career in public service, PSLF can make their dream career financially possible.

This program may lead to lower monthly payments because borrowers must opt into an income driven repayment (IDR) plan as a prerequisite for PSLF eligibility.

However, there are a few cons of the PSLF program that are worth considering. The program application process and meeting all compliance requirements year after year can be a hassle. Completing paperwork such as the Employer Certification Form (ECF), which is recommended to be resubmitted annually - can be time-consuming, especially when you're busy working full-time in the public sector. If you have federal student loans other than Direct Loans, you will also need to take the time to contact your loan servicer and consolidate them into federal Direct Loans in order to be eligible for PSLF.

Another potential drawback is the requirement to work in public service. Working for the government or a qualifying nonprofit could mean you have a lower salary than you would if you worked for a private sector employer.

Finally, there is also the possibility of rejection. Meeting the specific requirements throughout the program term is essential.

PSLF and Individual Factors

The PSLF program can be a valuable option - even a financial lifeline - for federal student loan borrowers who want to pursue a career in public service. If that sounds like you, then pursuing PSLF is well worth the time it takes to apply and stay in compliance each year. Before applying, be sure to understand your eligibility as well as the program's pros and cons and make an informed decision. PSLF could be a critical piece of your student loan repayment strategy helping to reduce your debt burden and your daily stress - which is priceless.

SimplyRFID AIMS Eyewear OMS Selected by Landa Eye Center for Business Process Improvement
Looking to improve process and efficiency, Landa Eye Center selects AIMS for automated drop-shipping, easy data entry, and inventory management.

Landa Eye Center Uses AIMS

Landa Eye Center upgrades its business process with AIMS order management system.

Landa Eye Center of New Braunfels, Texas, runs an optometry and eye wear practice with four ODs (optometry doctors). Dr. Angela Cline, of Landa, also plans to expand to a second location so more efficient methods were needed for inventory and business processes. That's when Dr. Cline decided to try AIMS for managing inventory and integrating with its EMR (electronic medical record) software Crystal PM (Practice Management).

The AIMS eyewear order management system (OMS), developed by SimplyRFiD in partnership with Frame Source Group, solved the problem. By installing RFID tags on every frame, Landa takes an accurate inventory using the AIMS RFID handheld in a few minutes vs. the days it took to scan barcodes.

"This is the future!" — Missy Brinsley, Lead Optician, Landa Eye Center

"Realistically, inventory was never right and we continued to order frames manually. AIMs finally gave us a solution that integrates with our practice management software. The ability [for AIMS] to drop-ship orders with frames and lenses from Morel, and several other vendors, speeds up the accuracy and order speed — and we can keep the most popular frames on the board," said Missy Brinsley, Lead Optician.

"This is the future," added Brinsley.

Video Short: Missy Brinsley, Lead Optician, Landa Eye Center, on AIMS Eyewear Order Management

AIMS benefits opticians and optical business owners:

  • One-click drop-ship orders with frame and lens from 11 gold star vendors, including Morel, Europa, Westgroupe, A&A, Kenmark, Riserva, Iconyx, Eight to Eighty, Charmant, Match, and Modern Optical
  • Track shipments from vendors to labs by patient
  • Take inventory in 2-3 minutes
  • Integrate with powerful commerce platforms, like Crystal PM, to reduce data entry
  • Reporting system that shows sales trends, leading and lagging frames

Accessing Urgent Care Anywhere: A Convenient Healthcare Solution

iQuanti: Urgent care is for injuries and illnesses requiring prompt medical attention but not severe enough to go to the emergency room. If you need treatment within 24 or 48 hours but can't get an appointment to see your primary care physician (or you don't have a primary care physician), you can visit urgent care

If you are experiencing more serious symptoms requiring lifesaving medical attention, such as chest pain, a head injury or uncontrolled bleeding, call 9-1-1 or go to the emergency department as soon as possible.1 An urgent care center is not an emergency department.

What services and treatments can I get at urgent care?

The services and treatments available at urgent care centers vary but often include the following:

  • Allergies
  • COVID-19 testing
  • Illness
  • Injuries
  • Physicals
  • Occupational Medicine
  • Telehealth
  • X-rays and Diagnosis

Common, non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries treated at urgent care clinics include:

  • Colds and flu
  • Allergic reactions
  • Bug bites and rashes
  • Eye irritation
  • Sore throat
  • Diarrhea and gastrointestinal issues
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Vomiting
  • Sprains and strains
  • Infections
  • Cuts, burns, and lacerations

Where can you access urgent care?

As a result of the increase in demand for tests and treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of urgent care centers has grown.

According to data from the Urgent Care Association, there are over 11,000 urgent care centers around the United States today, and this number is growing by 7% per year. Since 2019, patient volume at urgent care centers has increased by 60%.2

A shortage of primary care physicians, the high costs of emergency room visits, and convenience are some of the reasons people are increasingly using urgent care centers.

Urgent care centers are available all over the U.S. for in-person appointments, and many facilities also offer online visits. This makes it possible to see a medical provider without leaving your home. While urgent care clinic hours vary, many are open seven days a week with extended daytime hours. Some urgent care clinics also offer 24-hour care.

How to find an urgent care center

The easiest way to find an urgent care center near you is to enter "urgent care near me" in your maps app.

Alternatively, you can search online for "urgent care" in your area. If you know which urgent care company you want to visit, you can also search for a location near you on the urgent care company's website.

Common services provided by urgent care centers include in-person and virtual care for ear infections, cold and flu symptoms, physical examinations, and more.
