UTEP and TTUHSC El Paso Launch MedFuture Partnership to Train El Paso’s Next Generation of Physicians
Pathway program admits exceptional local and first-generation college students to the undergraduate pre-med program at UTEP and medical degree program at the TTUHSC El Paso Foster School of Medicine directly from high school.

Student cohort and presidents

TTUHSC El Paso President Dr. Richard Lange and UTEP President Dr. Heather Wilson with MedFuture's inaugural cohort.

The University of Texas at El Paso and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso unveiled MedFuture, a joint initiative that will create a pathway for highly qualified students in our Borderplex to be admitted to college and medical school in their hometown of El Paso right out of high school.

"UTEP has a very strong pre-med program," said Heather Wilson, UTEP President. "It makes sense for UTEP and TTUHSC El Paso to work together to help El Paso retain the best and brightest future physicians in the region."

The MedFuture initiative is the first of its kind in West Texas, with collaboration from two independent universities on one path to a medical education. Its groundbreaking programming will not only cultivate a deeper interest and understanding of the field but has the potential to change the life trajectories of local students and their families as they embark on a path to high-income earning careers in medicine. Four of the five students in MedFuture's inaugural cohort are first-generation college students.

"We're pleased to partner with UTEP to provide an educational pathway for talented local students who dream of attending medical school and serving patients in their hometown," said Richard Lange, M.D., M.B.A., president of TTUHSC El Paso and dean of the Foster School of Medicine. "MedFuture will address the physician shortage in the region while meeting the health care challenges faced by our residents."

The MedFuture partnership recognizes highly qualified seniors in high school who have expressed an interest in science and medicine — and a strong commitment to serve the region upon graduating.

While completing their baccalaureate degrees at UTEP, MedFuture students receive foundational pre-med support and enroll in the UTEP PREP summer program to set a solid foundation for their college career. Program opportunities include pre-health advising and mentorship, paid Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) preparation programs, paid summer research experiences and health care internships at TTUHSC El Paso's Foster School of Medicine.

"Our goal is to address our region's severe physician shortage by educating the next generation of medical professionals, and promoting a medical workforce that reflects our community," said Gail Arnold, Ph.D., assistant dean of the College of Science and director of the Medical Professions Institute at UTEP.

A joint committee of UTEP and TTUHSC El Paso's faculty and staff selected the inaugural cohort of students for admission. They are:

  • Fernanda Acosta, Clint Early College Academy
  • Luke Briggs, Cathedral High School
  • Janelle Navarrette, Northwest Early College High School
  • Makena Piñon, Texas Online Preparatory School
  • Max Serrano, Franklin High School

Piñon was born with a heart defect and has undergone multiple surgeries - including open-heart surgery. The experience gave her an understanding about her heart and how it worked. Her passion for practicing medicine locally grew after learning of TTUHSC El Paso's mission to keep students in the region after graduation.

"As a patient, I have to fly out to Houston for any treatment," Piñon said. "Not only is El Paso underserved, but it's underrepresented. Being part of this program means I can continue my education here and stay involved in our community."

"We're excited to provide mentorship and professional development opportunities, while exposing them to the field of medicine through scribing and shadowing internships," said Cynthia Perry, Ph.D., Associate Academic Dean for Admissions at the Foster School of Medicine. "MedFuture will help us grow our own future physicians and provide the resources to potentially change their life trajectories."

VoluMetrix Awarded $3 Million NIH SBIR Phase IIb Grant to Propel Development of Non-Invasive Heart Failure Monitoring, NIVA|HF

VoluMetrix Awarded Million NIH SBIR Phase IIb Grant to Propel Development of Non-Invasive Heart Failure Monitoring, NIVA|HF

VoluMetrix, a Nashville-based biotech startup dedicated to creating a new wave of solutions for vital monitoring to enhance well-being, announced today that it has been awarded a Phase IIb Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant expected to total $3 million over three years from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, part of the National Institute of Health. This grant, in conjunction with prior financing, supports the development and validation of NIVAHF, a device designed to provide non-invasive volume status monitoring for heart failure patients.

Heart failure affects over 6 million Americans and is the most common reason for hospitalization of elderly patients.1 Current heart failure monitoring is inadequate with a majority of patients monitored by clinical symptoms and weights, which are late and unreliable indicators.2 Monitoring cardiac filling pressures is the gold standard in heart failure, but this requires invasive procedures or implanted devices.3 VoluMetrix has developed the investigational NIVAHF, a wrist-worn device designed to provide non-invasive, real-time estimates of cardiac filling pressure from hospital to home.

"The SBIR funding will assist VoluMetrix in bringing NIVAHF into patients' lives. For us, this NIH SBIR funding allows research discoveries to become healthcare realities for our patients." - Colleen Brophy M.D., VoluMetrix Chief Medical Officer.

The NIH SBIR program provides an important funding mechanism for innovative solutions that address public health challenges. These programs focus on small businesses with high-impact technologies that have strong potential for commercialization. VoluMetrix is pleased to receive this prestigious and highly competitive award and to fulfill the program goals by bringing NIVAHF to patients and clinicians.

What is NIVA Technology?

NIVA is a proprietary venous waveform technology from VoluMetrix, representing a major innovation in vital monitoring technology. The venous waveform is an energy-based signal generated by the heart and respiratory activity that reflects numerous physiologic conditions, including pulse rate and respiration, as well as intravascular and extravascular dynamics. NIVA is being developed to optimize hemodynamic assessment in three key ways: signal capture (using a non-invasive wrist sensor), signal deconstruction (mapping individual amplitudes within a patient's waveform), and signal decoding.

About VoluMetrix

VoluMetrix is a Nashville-based company that is dedicated to creating a new wave of solutions for vital monitoring to enhance well-being. As pioneers of non-invasive venous waveform technology, we are partnering closely with patients and practitioners to develop the pathway toward the optimal implementation and utilization of our technology, from hospital to home.

NIVA technology is investigational and is not available for sale in the United States.

Succession star Brian Cox looks back on the series after the finale

Succession star Brian Cox looks back on the series after the finale

As the show drops the curtain on the ruthless tale of the Roy family, Brian Cox shares an emotional message for everyone.

As the successful HBO show Succession comes to an end, the series’ patriarch, Brian Cox, reflects on his time and what the show has meant to him and so many. According to The Hollywood Reporter, as the show finally takes its final bow after the airing of its series finale, Cox would address his fans, his cast and his crew via his Instagram stories on Memorial Day with graciousness and appreciation. Succession had premiered the series finale just the day before, so Cox would not hesitate to express his feelings.

Cox writes on his Instagram stories, “We have now come to the end. And what has been, in my career, certainly the greatest work experience ever. The harmony between cast and crew was truly amazing. It was on [its] way to become a great series but the Love and commitment from crew to cast and writers, made it memorable. I would like to thank all of us in the making and creating of this show from the very bottom of my heart.”

The actor had recently shared his opinion about the fate of Logan Roy, stating that he was written out “ultimately too early.” He would continue, “I was fine with it ultimately, but I did feel a little bit rejected. You know, I felt a little bit like all the work I’ve done and finally I’m going to, you know, end up as an ear on a carpet of a plane.” Although, Cox would also tease that perhaps he’s not dead afterall, “If you think about it, from Logan’s point of view, he has to find out, how are his children going to behave when he dies, what will then happen? And the only way to do that is to fake his death and actually, at some distant point he’s observing the chaos that is following.”

While there has been such acclaim for Cox’s ruthless performance on the show, the actor would additionally be unfiltered and outspoken about his connection with his co-stars. For as much as he’s enjoyed working with them, he didn’t mince words about his disagreements with their acting methods in the past. Cox would speak about Jeremy Strong’s method, “I’ve worked with intense actors before. It’s a particularly American disease, I think, this inability to separate yourself off while you’re doing the job. The result that Jeremy gets is always pretty tremendous.I just worry about what he does to himself. I worry about the crises he puts himself through in order to prepare.”

Updated Personal Preference game gets new life after 35 years

The Inventor with Personal Preference

Prof. Don Carlston with the new edition of his board game, Personal Preference

When Prof. Don Carlston's 1987 board game Personal Preference went out of print, after selling over 400,000 copies in the U.S. and Canada, he hoped it would be republished someday. He had a lot of ideas for updating, improving and expanding the game, if only the right opportunity came along. But he never guessed that that opportunity would arise 35 years later through the persistent efforts of devoted fans who kept playing the original game for decades.

A number of such fans contacted him regularly over the years about their interest in buying the rights to Personal Preference. Eventually Prof. Carlston proposed that instead, these previously unacquainted fans team up with him to produce a second edition themselves. A young entrepreneur from Toronto became the project director; her husband became the art director; an award-winning independent film director from Chicago joined in, as, for periods of time, did a film distributor from Great Britain, a former newspaperman from Alberta, and several Canadian cartoonists. As the project came together, an advisory team was created consisting of an additional 50 die-hard Personal Preference players who evaluated new game categories and played test games via Zoom. Finally, prototypes were made, and more than 233 supporters pledged an average of over $120 each on Kickstarter to finance production of the second edition of Personal Preference. Most ordered several games and expansion card packs, but some just donated their money.

"I'm just thrilled at the amount of enthusiasm there is for Personal Preference even after all these years," says Professor Carlston, "and by the generosity of people who have donated their time and money to updating the game." He added, "We've gotten notes and emails from so many people about their love for the game. For example, here's one from just a couple of days ago that says: 'I am a huge fan of board games -- I own more than 500. And the 1987 edition of Personal Preference is my favorite!' It's especially heart-warming that so many people who I really don't know, and still have not met in person, would show such devotion to the effort to republish this game. Personal Preference was designed to bring people together and help them get to know each other better. And it's ended up doing that in ways I never would have imagined, bringing together a diverse group of strangers with the goal of getting the second edition published!" With the Kickstarter ending on Wednesday, and the funding goal already reached, Personal Preference could finally be back in print within a matter of weeks and in people's hands by Christmas, after a wait of just 35 long years!
