HBCU SpringComing Welcomes HBCU Grads Back Home for the 9th Annual Festival in New York City and Birmingham, Alabama

HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) SpringComing returns bigger and better for its 9th installment of festivals in both Birmingham, Alabama (March 17-19) and New York, New York (April 14-16). The one-of-a-kind event created by Lauren Grove and George A. Peters II aims to celebrate the accomplishments of influential HBCU graduates from around the country.

"As HBCU SpringComing continues to grow and evolve, we're very proud of everything we've been able to accomplish within the HBCU community through innovative and intentional events. Bridging the gap between HBCU alum and allies in the New York Tri-State area and now Birmingham, a city in the south, deeply rooted in Black excellence, is just one of the many reasons why our festival is so special and unique," said George A. Peters II, Co-founder, HBCU SpringComing. "To date, we've had over 25,000 attendees. This speaks to our team's ability to create authentic culture and conversation amongst a group of Black leaders representing the best and brightest to come out of historically Black colleges and universities."   

This year, Indeed continues as the official sponsor with an expanded city-to-city event schedule officially kicking off in Birmingham during the NCAA Tournament for #MagicCityMadness. In step with their signature festivities, HBCU SpringComing will debut the newly added "Sips & Sounds: A Toast to the Living Gallery," an exclusive wine and music event to recognize HBCU alums and local leaders making change in their community. The intimate evening will also feature Grammy Award-winning singer Melanie Fiona as host, wine tastings from Black-owned wineries and more. In April, the festival will make its last stop in New York City, its original home since 2015. The three-day experience in both cities will showcase mirrored events.

Webb Eyecare runs three optometry and eye glass stores in Nebraska. With 25 staff and thousands of eye frames to choose from, it was never possible to maintain accurate inventory of what was available. Manual counting was too time consuming and tracking never caught up with the daily demands of serving customers.

The AIMS RFID inventory system developed by SimplyRFiD in partnership with Frame Source Group solved the problem. By installing RAIN RFID tags on every frame, Webb takes an accurate inventory using the AIMS RFID handheld in a few minutes vs. the days it took to scan barcodes.

"Inventory was always off, and with 25 staff members selling frames there was just too much room for human error to ever fix the problem. AIMs finally gave us a solution. I know exactly what is in each of the three offices every day when they take inventory," said Schwager.

"I also know instantly if frames are disappearing from our office.  Before [AIMS] it could have gone on for quite awhile without being caught," added Schwager.

  • Reduce inventory requirement. With AIMS, frames are placed back on board to sell multiple times a day vs. whenever the rep shows up to restock. This also smooths cash flow and expenses to match sales.
  • Maintains a stock list of more than 80,000 frames from 17 manufacturers with frame data, pictures, and stock levels.

Leveraging novel digital technologies, the partnership between KlimaDAO and Fly Air will enable transparent, immediate carbon offsetting to compensate for the carbon emissions of chartered jet services.

KlimaDAO and Fly Air have partnered together to launch a first-of-its-kind fully automated carbon offsetting solution for chartered jet services. 

The partnership will enable the carbon emissions of flights to be automatically calculated based on the type of jet used and the distance traveled. This information will be utilized by the platform to ensure that sufficient compensatory measures are taken by Fly Air on behalf of its customers to mitigate the impact of the carbon emissions. 

The partnership will facilitate instantaneous offsetting of carbon credits via KlimaDAO, which is built on top of the public blockchain Polygon, meaning that the carbon credits that are retired are fully traceable and verifiable, including the amount, type and vintage year of the credits used. 

Today, there are almost 25 million carbon credits available within the Digital Carbon Market that can be utilized by projects looking to efficiently and transparently offset their carbon emissions.

2023 - 2024 President of ASTCT

The American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (ASTCT) announced Miguel-Angel Perales, M.D., as the President of the Society in 2023 - 2024. Dr. Perales first served on the Board of Directors in 2017 and has been a member of ASTCT since 2001.  

Dr. Perales is Chief of the Adult Bone Marrow Transplantation Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and a Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. 

"I have enjoyed serving on the ASTCT Board of Directors, and I am honored to serve as President this year," stated Dr. Perales. "In my practice, my patients have a variety of hematologic malignancies and are in need of an allogeneic transplant or cellular therapy. The goal of my practice, research, and now as President of ASTCT is to further advocate for our patients and support our field by advancing the science and further providing educational opportunities for our members." 

Prior to his time on the ASTCT Board of Directors, Dr. Perales served on the Education Committee, and Committee for Practice Guidelines, and is the founding editor of the ASTCT Mobile App. As ASTCT president, Dr. Perales will direct the organization's new strategic plan, and continue to bring more science focus to ASTCT to help advance better treatment options for patients. 

He is the current Chair of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology Transplantation and Cell-Based Therapies Committee and has served as Vice-Chair and member of the Board of Directors of Be The Match (National Marrow Donor Program - NMDP). He has also held leadership positions in the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) and Blood and Marrow Transplantation Clinical Trials Network (BMT CTN).

Professionally, Dr. Perales is an expert in donor-derived hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy. He is currently participating in a number of studies designed to improve outcomes in patients undergoing stem cell transplantation, including looking at ways to lower the risk of complications, relapse, and graft-versus-host disease. He is also conducting translational clinical research to investigate new ways to enhance the recovery of the immune system after a transplant and ways to help the immune system fight hematologic malignancies. Dr. Perales has been published in more than 350 publications, including peer-reviewed articles, position papers, guidelines, editorials, invited reviews, and book chapters.
