9 Steps to Take When There’s a Death in the Family

iQuanti: Losing someone is never easy, and the grieving process can be difficult and overwhelming. Not to mention all the practical things to take care of when you lose someone close, such as making the funeral arrangements, clearing out the deceased's home, and managing financial matters.  

Everyone's experience is different and there is no "right" way to grieve, but these nine steps may help during this time of mourning:

1. Reach out to your support system. It can be helpful to talk with close friends or family members about the situation and find solace in their understanding. After losing a loved one, it can be comforting to hear stories and memories of the person who has passed away.

2. Make a plan for sharing the news. Talk through who should be contacted, as well as when and how you want to deliver the news of your loss.

3. Give yourself space to grieve. The first few days can be some of the most difficult, with funeral arrangements to make and practical matters to take care of. Remember to allow yourself time and space to process the emotions that come up. Practice self-care and remember to take care of your physical health during this difficult time.

4. Consider memorial arrangements. You may want to talk with family members or close friends to determine what type of arrangements you would like to make. Depending on the wishes of the deceased—and plans, if they made any—decide what type of service should be held, who will officiate, and where it will take place.

5. Publish an obituary. Consider writing an obituary or sharing a reflective note to honor the life of the deceased. Thinking about the deceased's life can help you start to process your grief. 

6. Talk with children and grandchildren in your family. Depending on their age and understanding, you may need to provide additional support and explain what is happening in simple language they can understand.

7. Gather important documents. Ensure that you have access to all the necessary legal and financial documents related to the deceased, such as a driver's license, Social Security card, birth certificate, marriage certificate, will or trust, insurance policies and bank account information. Get copies of the death certificate if needed.

8. Notify any important institutions. When you are ready, contact banks, creditors, employers and other important institutions related to the deceased. This can mean contacting the deceased's life insurance provider and notifying them (this is true whether the deceased had a term life policy or a permanent policy like whole life insurance).

9. Understand that grief is a process. Give yourself time and permission to grieve and heal for as long as needed. Remember that grief looks different for everyone. As time goes by, you may decide that you need to talk to someone, such as a therapist, for additional support. No matter what, it's important to remember to be gentle with yourself as you go through this difficult time.

DuMOL is proud to announce its recent acquisition of the Dr. Galante Estate Vineyard, raising its Estate holdings to 80 planted acres, and solidifying their quest to produce wines of exceptional quality and unique character, with clear expression of site.  

The acquisition of Dr. Galante Vineyard is timed beautifully with the Russian River Valley's 40th anniversary. Since DuMOL's inception over 25 years ago, they've been studying their local neighborhood, the distinctive Green Valley of the Russian River Valley, understood to be one of the best places on earth to grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

In concert with fog from the Pacific Ocean, free-draining soils, heritage vine selections, and the hands of skilled and driven winegrowers, the winery's continual study of the land's seen and unforeseen occurrences mean their capacity to craft world-class wines grows each season. 

Dr. Galante Vineyard is one of the finest pieces of land in the area for grape growing. With a cool northern hillside exposure, bordered by forest, deep and lingering fog intrusion, and classic Goldridge soil with patches of highly-prized Altamont friable red sandy/clays, DuMOL is thrilled to add the vineyard to its portfolio and discover its potential intimately. 

Dr. Galante is located just ½ mile from DuMOL's existing Green Valley Estate vineyards—initially 10 acres planted by DuMOL's Winemaker and Partner Andy Smith in 2004, and subsequently expanded to a total of 30 acres. Today, with mature, balanced vines across four contiguous parcels in Green Valley, Smith, whose first vintage with DuMOL was 1998, is boots-on-the-ground, ensuring wine quality, daily. 

In a brief timeline of Estate-vineyard events: DuMOL developed its Green Valley Estate in 2004 and 2005; planted MacIntyre Estate in 2016, leased Flax Estate in 2017, leased Wildrose Estate in 2018; and purchased Galante Estate in 2023. 

In-house farming has always been the next step for DuMOL. Working with a crew of 15, Winemaker and Partner Andy Smith, Associate Winemaker Jenna Davis and Viticulturist James King will strengthen DuMOL's continual focus on quality, ensuring the most sensitive agricultural practices are implemented.

A portion of the fruit from Dr. Galante will lead DuMOL's Wester Reach cuvée, a Pinot Noir with tremendous harmony, expressing the varied soils, microclimates, and entire Russian River Valley appellation. Following the 2023 harvest, the team will begin a process of incremental redevelopment of the property, focusing on DuMOL's preferred heritage vine selections.

Who was Dr. Galante? Dr. Maurice Galante, a legendary San Francisco-based surgeon and UCSF Professor Emeritus, bought the apple orchard planted on Goldridge Soil in the mid-1980s. Dr. Galante was fortunate enough to meet Peter Mondavi who encouraged him to convert his orchard into a vineyard. It was first planted with 22 acres of Pinot Noir vines in 1998. The two, Mondavi and Galante went on to create several limited-edition vintages using grapes from Galante's vineyard.  

Today, a new chapter begins for the vineyard as it joins DuMOL's Estate holdings, all within a 10-mile radius, now farmed by its in-house crew.

100 Black Men of America, Inc. Mourns the Loss of Beloved Chairman Thomas W. Dortch, Jr.

On Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023, we lost a bright light, an unstoppable, unforgettable force of nature. His work across many industries, through various organizations, with several civic coalitions, alongside HBCUs and Atlanta public schools, in partnerships with corporate foundations, and effectively working with elected officials at the city, state, and federal levels of government always included advocating for underserved communities, and especially for youth. As a member and former Chairman of 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. and Chairman of 100 Black Men of America, Inc., Mr. Dortch was an active member for over 37 years.

"As the members of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. and friends from around the globe mourn the loss of Thomas W. Dortch, Jr., we will forever honor his legacy through mentorship and service to our communities," stated Albert E. Dotson, Jr., Vice Chairman, 100 Black Men of America, Inc.

During his tenure, which included multiple terms as Chairman of the Board (from 1994 -2004 and 2017 - 2023), many milestones were achieved by the organization. Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. proclaimed in 1994 that the organization's work be focused in four areas: Mentoring, Education, Health & Wellness, and Economic Empowerment. After meetings with the U.S. Secretaries of Education the Hon. Richard Riley and Rod Paige and their staff, and strategic analysis by the 100's National Chairs of Education, Mr. Dortch directed the 100 Chapters to elevate their engagement with our public education systems. These efforts led to chapters across the 100 network either chartering schools or working in partnership with local schools to maximize learning outcomes.

His passion to help young people live out their dreams fueled his vision to expand the organization's reach. Through the corporate and community partnerships developed by Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. the organization has grown over the years. This growth has included the expansion of 100 Black Men Chapters globally that deliver unique programs, addressing specific needs in their local communities. Chairman Dortch had an unwavering belief and commitment to the 100's proven blueprint -- a model for mentoring and developing young people into future leaders -- a strategy grounded in surrounding youth with a positive network and exposing them to experiences and possibilities. Throughout 100 Black Men of America, Inc.'s history, the organization has been recognized for its powerful and impactful outcomes that empower youth and communities in which they live.

Understanding the life-changing impact that mentors can have on a young person, Mr. Dortch worked to grow the organization by four times its size, expanding the mentoring movement beyond U.S. boarders. Accessing his network of corporate partners, Dortch was able to grow the resources of the 100 and move from a single staff person in a workshare space to the 100 having its own debt-free building, fully staffed and serving the growing network of chapters. Mr. Dortch's leadership in multiplying mentors has been recognized by Presidents George H.W. Bush, William J. Clinton, and Barack H. Obama.

From leading grassroots voter registration efforts to campaigns for desegregating public schools, and always working for greater economic justice, Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. just does not stop working to make a difference in the lives of others. In his later years he has written extensively on racial inequality and social change, shining a light on the inequities that vulnerable populations face daily. Chairman Dortch has been in good trouble and his continuous unwavering efforts should inspire us all to continue to fight for underserved communities living with health disparities, education inequality, over policing, and more.

The arc of Tommy's life has demonstrated that you can be successful in business and continuously serve your community. You can educate and empower others and give voice to the voiceless by speaking truth to power, all while mentoring the next generation of leaders. Every area of his life that he dedicated to public service is important but mentoring youth was his passion. It comes across crystal clear in his book The Miracles of mentoring: How to Encourage and Lead Future Generations.

Chairman Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. was a changemaker and is a legend within the African American community. He will be missed but never forgotten. His leadership will remain an inspiration for generations to come.
