How to Get Rid of Your Debt From Last Year

iQuanti: With the holidays coming to a close, it's time to look ahead and make sure you're paying off those leftover debts from last year. The APR for personal loans is typically lower than that of credit cards, making this an attractive option for consolidating debt: it will cost less interest overall and can reduce your monthly payments considerably. That said, it's also crucial to remember that repaying debt responsibly requires discipline: you'll need to stay organized with budgeting, use proper money-management skills, set short- and long-term goals - and yes, commit to them! Successfully taking control of your finances in this way benefits both your financial health and your peace of mind.

In addition to consolidating debt, this article will discuss how to get rid of your debt from last year. Several options exist. All you have to figure out is which of them makes the most sense for your unique situation.

1. Take Out a Personal Loan

You might consider personal loans if you have several outstanding debts from 2022. Credit unions and banks offer personal loans. Either of these can be reputable entities.

You can take the money from a personal loan and pay off all your outstanding debts. By doing so, you make your repayment schedule less complicated.

You can go from owing several different entities to only owing money to a single one. Many times, it's that simplification of your repayment schedule that will assist you in becoming debt-free during the new year.

2. Hunt for a Job that Pays More

Looking for a job that pays more in the new year can also get you out from under the debts you accumulated in 2022. Maybe you feel that you've reached the limit of what you can achieve in your current position. You don't see a path to a promotion and a raise that can accompany it.

If that's true, you can update your resume and look for jobs online. You can use sites like Monster, Indeed, and LinkedIn. If you don't have a LinkedIn profile yet, you should create one.

Getting a job that pays more will free up more money that you can use to pay off your debts from 2022 quicker. Don't rest until you find a new position that pays you a salary that matches your skill set. Being complacent at your current job isn't going to help you if you're sure there's no raise or promotion in your immediate future.

3. Don't Accumulate Any More Debt

You can also work on paying off what you owe from last year without accumulating any new debt. Often, debt piles up because you keep accruing new debts before you can pay off your existing ones. If that's happening, it's a sure sign you need to curb your spending.

Don't live an extravagant lifestyle. Limit the number of times you go out to dinner. Instead, buy bulk food items and use them to make low-cost meals. Purchase clothing at second-hand stores like Goodwill instead of buying them brand new. If you can put off shopping for new clothes, do that.

If you need a new vehicle, get a used or certified pre-owned one instead of buying the latest model. Only spend money on home improvements if they're unavoidable.

Conserving money in all these ways will let you put the cash you've saved toward paying off your 2022 debts. If you're determined and don't mind living this way for a while, you should see positive results.

You Can Get Rid of Last Year's Debt

Getting rid of last year's debt can be challenging, but you can do it if you're determined. You can save money to put toward debt from 2022 by living frugally. Eating in restaurants less often, shopping for second-hand clothing, and taking similar measures leaves you more money to put toward your outstanding debts.

Hunting for a new job that pays more is another viable option. Spruce up your resume and look for jobs on sites like Indeed, LinkedIn, and Monster. You may also consider taking out a personal loan and using the money from it to pay off all your other outstanding debts. Having one creditor to pay back will simplify the process.

These tips should help you get rid of last year's debt. It may not be easy, but it's always possible.

Financial Steps to Take Once You’re Married in 2023

Financial Steps to Take Once You’re Married in 2023

iQuanti: Getting married is an exciting time, but it also means taking on new financial responsibilities. Here are seven important steps to take once you're married in 2023:

1. Discuss personal finances first

The most critical piece to ensuring your marriage is successful is to start with open communication about your finances. Talk with your partner about your current financial situation and your finance-related goals for the future. Ask them to do the same and ensure you're both on the same page.

Some questions to consider:

  • Do we want kids? How will we pay for their education?
  • Do we want to own a home or rent for the foreseeable future?
  • How much debt do we each have? How critical is it for us to get out of debt quickly?
  • How much savings do we feel we need? Is there an amount we'd consider "too low" to be comfortable? How will we each contribute to the savings?
  • What are our retirement goals?
  • What investments do we have, and how comfortable are we with taking risks in the stock market?
  • What are our credit scores? Do we need to make it a priority for one or both of us to improve it? (This is especially critical as your goals for marriage and credit scores can either work in harmony or make your home life stressful very quickly.)

2. Decide if you'll open joint accounts or keep your finances separate

Traditionally married couples would combine their finances into joint accounts. This is changing as more couples earn dual incomes to save for their individual and combined goals. Joint accounts can be beneficial, but only if both partners are comfortable with the arrangement. If you're one of these couples, it's important to have open and honest conversations about the arrangement.

If you choose to separate your finances, create a budget for each person and discuss spending regularly. This way, you'll stay accountable and avoid any financial surprises down the road.

3. Change over your beneficiary information

If you have any life insurance, retirement plans, or other assets that will benefit your partner after you die, it's important to change these beneficiary designations as soon as possible. By doing this, your partner will be the primary beneficiary of these assets, and they'll be able to access them without legal complications.

4. Create a budget and stick to it

A budget is essential for anyone looking to live a financially successful life. Whether married or not, creating and sticking to a budget is vital for your short-term and long-term goals. Creating a budget can be simple - just take a look at your expenses over the past three months and divide them into categories (food, housing, transportation, etc.). Once you have a good idea of where your money is going each month, you can start making adjustments to ensure you're always spending within your means.

5. Discuss asset ownership and make the necessary changes

If you and your spouse own assets, such as a home or car, you should consider how ownership will be handled once you're legally married. Some couples will add their spouse as a co-owner, while others opt to keep assets separate. Whichever you decide to do, it's essential you and your spouse are on the same page so that there aren't any feelings of resentment that come up later.

6. Update your tax withholding

If you're a W-2 employee, consider updating your tax withholding status with your payroll department now that you'll be filing jointly.

7. Get a financial review

Sitting down together and getting a thorough financial review will help you identify areas where you may be overspending or under-investing and make necessary changes so you two are on track for your long-term goals. A financial advisor can also help you create a budget and assess your credit score, so you know where you and your partner stand.

The bottom line

By following these simple tips, you and your spouse will be better positioned to achieve your goals together and ensure your marriage is long and happy.

Kane Kalas

Kane and Harry Kalas

Kane Kalas, son of Hall of Fame Philadelphia Phillies sportscaster Harry Kalas, has released his rendition of the "Eagles' Victory Song" to commemorate the team's place in the big game.

The "Eagles' Victory Song," commonly referred to as "Fly, Eagles Fly," has played a major part in Philadelphia sports culture since the 1950s. While several artists have covered the piece, Kane's version is unique, with a marching band feel and operatic vocals delivered by the classically-trained recording artist. Kane's "Eagles' Victory Song" evokes excitement and suspense; think John Philip Sousa, with maybe a splash of Mendelssohn.

The cover opens with a touchdown monologue voiced by legendary Philadelphia Eagles sportscaster—and the longest-tenured announcer in the NFL—Merrill Reese.

"The 'Eagles' Victory Song' is not only the fight song of the Philadelphia Eagles; in many ways, it is the fight song of the city of Philadelphia itself," says Kane.

"If you're ever in Philly when the Eagles are playing—it doesn't matter where—you're sure to know whenever the Eagles score a touchdown by the rumbling of 'E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES' from a chorus of fans throughout the city. There's nothing more electric than being among a sea of fans at the Linc during a game and joining them in the chant after the Eagles score."

In addition to his role as the Phillies play-by-play broadcaster, Kane's father, Harry Kalas, frequently broadcasted Eagles games for Westwood One. Kane vividly remembers watching the games with his father growing up and cheering on the Eagles. "I must've been four years old the first time I watched an Eagles game with my dad—the Eagles scored a touchdown, and he began to bellow the 'Eagles' Victory Song.' It was the first time I had heard it," Kane recalls. "He was a true homer. Dad often said there were no sports fans in the world as enthusiastic as Philadelphia fans; that's why he pledged to spend his entire broadcasting career in Philly."

Kane's forthcoming album High Hopes is lovingly dedicated to his father and the city of Philadelphia.

Porto Jewish Community Asks European Union to Investigate Case of Soviet-Style Antisemitism in Portugal
Request aims to reassure the Jewish community

Shabbat at the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue in Porto, Portugal

Hundreds of people pray at the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue in Porto (CIP\/CJP)

The Jewish Community of Porto (CIP/CJP) has called on the European Union to instigate an impartial international investigation into "an antisemitic action that took place in Portugal using robbers, murderers and convicts who intended to defame the country's strongest Jewish community, destroy Jewish leadership, halt the influx of Israeli citizens and end the law that granted Portuguese citizenship to Jews of Portuguese and Spanish origin. In March 2022, police raided the synagogue and arrested its rabbi, and in September the High Court said that criminal indictments against the community were 'based on nothing,'" says the community's president, Gabriel Senderowicz.

Deborah Elijah, president of Keren Hayesod Portugal, explains that the basis for the Soviet-style antisemitism was "primarily the use of criminals and the press to defame the most important Jewish communities, to associate them with immoral businesses and then to try to link the rabbis for fictitious corruption. Weak communities linked to existing powers were used to serve as propaganda, like a musical instrument, as my father was forced to play the violin in the Theresienstadt concentration camp."

A community council member for legal affairs, attorney David Garrett, says that the EU investigation is necessary. "If the anonymous, slanderous complaints were not made by convicts at the request of state agents; if the attempt to eliminate the first signer of a petition to the parliament was authored by someone who chose his target at random; if there is no relationship between the professional burglars who stole the server from a community lawyer [in Porto] and the computers of the president of SIRESP [in Lisbon] - so everything was nothing more than a miraculous coincidence and the community should not remain alarmed. If, on the contrary, the investigation concludes that state agents used criminals and all the press against a religious and cultural organization [the Jewish community of Porto], then we can say that they wanted mostly to destroy a Jewish nascent elite, and that the aim was not merely to initiate proceedings against suspects for the practice of illegalities. Against these, legal means of obtaining evidence would be used, the police would not be used as an instrument, much less whether they would use burglars, murderers and manufacturers of anonymous complaints."

Whittier Street Health Center Is 1 of 22 Health Centers Nationwide to Receive a Grant to Expand Breast Cancer Screenings in Vulnerable Communities

Breast Health Educational Workshop

Whittier Street Health Center's Breast Health Team

A $500,000 grant was awarded to Whittier Street Health Center to expand its breast cancer screening program, in partnership with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Breast Cancer is the most common malignancy and second most lethal form of malignancy among women in the United States.

The grant awards come on the first anniversary of the Biden-Harris Administration's reignited Cancer Moonshot initiative, a call to action to reduce the cancer death rate in this country by at least 50% over the next 25 years and to support families living with and surviving cancer.

According to a press release from the Health Resources Services Administration, the $11 million in 2023 awards doubles HRSA's investment in the Accelerating Cancer Screening Program from $5 million in 2022. The program focuses on leveraging outreach specialists and patient navigators to conduct patient outreach in underserved communities served by health centers to promote early detection of cancer, connect patients to screening services, and provide hands-on assistance with accessing high-quality cancer care and treatment as needed. In the release, Xavier Becerra, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, stated that the 22 grants totaling nearly $11 million is an investment in health centers working toward reducing the disparities in cancer screenings "across races, ethnicities, genders, and incomes."

"We are grateful to the Biden-Harris Administration and HRSA for this grant that will allow us, in partnership with Dana-Farber, to offer life-saving breast cancer screenings and linkage to treatment and evaluation for patients from diverse backgrounds," said Frederica M. Williams, president and CEO of Whittier Street Health Center. "While it is true that cancer affects all population groups, disparities in screening, treatment, and cancer rate are disproportionate due to economic, social, and environmental disadvantages. With this grant, we hope to mitigate some of that disparity."

Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the United States, with approximately 600,000 deaths annually. Appropriate screening and timely follow-up care help to detect and prevent cancer. Yet, significant disparities continue to exist in cancer screening and follow-up care, including disparities based on an individual's income, insurance status, and race or ethnicity.
