Richard Dreyfuss sparks outrage with wild Q&A at a Jaws screening

Richard Dreyfuss sparked outrage by going off an unexpected rant during an appearance at a Jaws screening last weekend

This past weekend, The Cabot theater in Beverly, Massachusetts hosted an event that was billed as An Evening With Richard Dreyfuss + Jaws Screening – but attendees did not expect what they got from legendary actor Richard Dreyfuss when he took the stage. Most of them probably expected the moderator to lead Dreyfuss on an overview of his amazing career, allowing him to discuss not only Jaws (and set the record straight about whether or not he was a jerk on set) but also films like American Graffiti, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Stand by Me, Stakeout, What About Bob?, or the two that earned him recognition from the Academy: Mr. Holland’s Opus (he earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his performance in the film) and The Goodbye Girl (he won the Best Actor Oscar for that one). Instead, Dreyfuss used the event as an opportunity to go on a free-form rant that led to a lot of audience members to walking out on him, shocked and offended by the things he was saying.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dreyfuss’s rant was partly a continuation of what he had to say last year when he bashed the Academy’s inclusion rules. Things got off to a confusing start when Dreyfuss took the stage in a dress, dancing to a Taylor Swift song. After being helped out of his dress, he sat down for the interview, and after a weird story about Barbra Streisand (his co-star from the movie Nuts), many called sexist (apparently saying women should have no power and that Nuts “sucked” because Streisand is too “passive”) he began giving his controversial opinions on trans issues, diversity, and more. The comments, which many said came out of nowhere given that he was there to talk abut Jaws, were met with hostility. To note, no full recordings of the evening have surfaced (yet) so we’re really going by the comments made on Twitter from those who were there.

Dreyfuss ended the Q&A by talking about his book One Thought Scares MeWe Teach Our Children What We Wish Them to Know; We Don’t Teach Our Children What We Don’t Wish Them to Know, saying, “It’s about the fact that 50 years ago, without telling anybody, they took civics out of the curriculum of all public schools in America, which means we have no knowledge of who the hell we are. And if we don’t get it back soon, we’re all going to die. Make sure your kids are not the last generation of Americans. And you know exactly what I’m talking about.

For their part, The Cabot has issued an apology to those in attendance: “We are aware of, and share serious concerns, following the recent event with Richard Dreyfuss prior to a screening of the film Jaws at The Cabot. The views expressed by Mr. Dreyfuss do not reflect the values of inclusivity and respect that we uphold as an organization. We deeply regret the distress that this has caused to many of our patrons. We regret that an event that was meant to be a conversation to celebrate an iconic movie instead became a platform for political views. We take full responsibility for the oversight in not anticipating the direction of the conversation and for the discomfort it caused to many patrons. We are in active dialogue with our patrons about their experience and are committed to learning from this event how to better enact our mission of entertaining, educating and inspiring our community.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Dreyfuss was criticized for “sexist and mean” comments he made at The Music Hall in Portsmouth, New Hampshire the night before his appearance at The Cabot. Again, no one can say exactly what he said, because at the moment no recordings have been released, so the information is second hand.

Ben Dreyfuss, one of Richard Dreyfuss’s sons, took to social media to say: “Re: my father: well, now you know why I refused to give him the password to his own twitter account for a decade lol. My dad and I disagree about lots of stuff. But it’s a free country. People are allowed to have different opinions about stuff.

Richard Dreyfuss, who is coming up on his 77th birthday, has always had a reputation for being… well, some might say a jerk, while others might say ornery. Given his age and how far off track he’s taking his talks at this movie screenings, we have to wonder if he’s experiencing some health issues now as well.

What do you think of Richard Dreyfuss going off on an unexpected (and, to many, offensive) rant during his appearance at The Cabot’s Jaws screening? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

3 Mummy projects in the works at Universal, including prequel and Brendan Fraser sequel

3 Mummy projects in the works at Universal, including prequel and Brendan Fraser sequel

A prequel to The Mummy is in the works at Universal, but it’s not clear which version of The Mummy this is a prequel to

UPDATE: Daniel Richtman has learned that there’s not only a Mummy prequel in the works at Universal, but there are two other Mummy projects in the works as well. He writes, “There are no less than THREE Mummy projects in development at Universal, one is a direct sequel to the Fraser films.” So fans might get to see Brendan Fraser make his long-awaited return to the role of Rick O’Connell after all!

The original article follows:

The 2017 version of The Mummy was supposed to kick off a new cinematic universe at Universal Pictures – a Dark Universe that would consist of interconnected reboots of their classic monster properties. Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man, Phantom of the Opera, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Creature from the Black Lagoon, they were all coming back, and they were all going to be crossing paths with each other. The crossovers had even started in The Mummy, with the appearance of Dr. Jekyll (and Mr. Hyde) and nods to other monsters. But Universal pumped so much money into The Mummy, its global box office haul of $410 million was considered a disappointment. The studio has since moved forward with a reboot of The Invisible Man, a couple new Dracula movies (Renfield and The Last Voyage of the Demeter), a Dracula’s Daughter movie (Abigail), and a reboot of Wolf Man (which is now filming), but none of these movies have been connected to each other, and there’s been no talk of further Mummy adventures… until today. Industry scooper Daniel Richtman has revealed on his Patreon account that a prequel to The Mummy is now in the works!

Here’s what Richtman said: “The Mummy PREQUEL movie now in development at Universal with Wes Tooke writing the script.

That’s all the information we have to go on at this time. Richtman didn’t even specify which Mummy movie this project might be a prequel to. It seems unlikely that Universal would return to the story of their Dark Universe killer from 2017, so this probably isn’t going to dig into the history of Sofia Boutella’s Ahmanet character. So will it be a prequel to the 1932 original? The 1999 film starring Brendan Fraser? Since Fraser has been enjoying a career resurgence in recent years, including an Oscar win for his performance in The Whale, some fans have been hoping we might see him return to the Mummy franchise for a fourth film, following The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. (There were plans for a film called The Mummy: Rise of the Aztec at one point, but that was scrapped in favor of the Dark Universe idea.) But since this is a prequel of some kind, we probably won’t be seeing Brendan Fraser back in the role of Rick O’Connell.

Screenwriter Wes Tooke only has a few credits to his name: an episode of Jean-Claude Van Johnson, episodes of Colony, and the 2019 Roland Emmerich film Midway. Three and a half years ago, it was announced that Tooke was working with producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller and star Channing Tatum on “a modern day, tongue in cheek thriller” that was inspired by Universal’s classic monster movies, but we never heard anything more about that project.

What do you think of the idea of a prequel to The Mummy? Which Mummy would you like to see a prequel to? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Knives Out 3: Andrew Scott joins cast of Wake Up Dead Man

Knives Out 3: Andrew Scott joins cast of Wake Up Dead Man

Andrew Scott joins Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny in the cast of Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.

The cast of the next Knives Out movie is starting to come together. Shortly after the title was officially announcedWake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery — it was revealed that Josh O’Connor (Challengers) and Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus) had signed on, and Variety has reported that Andrew Scott (Ripley) has joined the cast as well.

As expected, details on who Andrew Scott is playing in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery are being kept under wraps, but he’s a welcome addition to what will surely be a stand-out ensemble cast. Daniel Craig will obviously reprise his role as Benoit Blanc, with the film teased to send the detective off on his “most dangerous case yet.

Rian Johnson will return to direct Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery from a script he wrote and will produce the project alongside Ram Bergman through their T-Street Productions banner. Production is expected to kick off next month with a 2025 release on Netflix.

Once again, the sequel contains “A Knives Out Mystery” in the title, which Johnson didn’t love the last time around with Glass Onion. “I’ve tried hard to make them self-contained. Honestly, I’m pissed off that we have A Knives Out Mystery in the title,” the director told The Atlantic in 2022. “I want it to just be called Glass Onion. I get it, and I want everyone who liked the first movie to know this is next in the series, but also, the whole appeal to me is it’s a new novel off the shelf every time. But there’s a gravity of a thousand suns toward serialized storytelling.

Andrew Scott was recently seen starring in Ripley on Netflix. The series follows Tom Ripley, “a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York, is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son Dickie Greenleaf to return home. Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.” It remains to be seen if there will be a second season, but Scott is open to it after he’s had a break. Curiteva Surpasses 1,000 Procedures With Inspire® Cervical Trabecular PEEK™ With HAFUSE® Technology

Curiteva, Inc., a privately held manufacturing and technology company, announces over 1,000 patients have been treated with the novel 3D printed Inspire Cervical Trabecular PEEK Interbody Fusion System, resulting in over 2,000 Inspire implants placed in patients. The Inspire Cervical System was introduced with limited launch in April of 2023, followed by full commercialization in July.

“I am seeing CT scans of patients at their three-month follow-up showing bone bridging from endplate to endplate through the porous structure of the device. This is unprecedented in my 40 years of practice,” commented Randy Dryer, MD, Curiteva’s Medical Director. “Other companies have touted a porous PEEK implant, but the Curiteva Trabecular PEEK is forming bone across the entire implant.

The Inspire platform is manufactured with a proprietary, patented Fused Filament Fabrication 3D printer designed, programmed, and built by Curiteva. This ground-breaking additive process produces a fully interconnected and integrated porous structure traversing the entire implant to promote osseointegration, improve radiographic assessment, and deliver superior biomechanics. The first-to-market combination of the HAFUSE nanotechnology surface treatment and novel porous PEEK structure creates a hydrophilic, bioactive environment for cell attachment, proliferation, and healing in pre-clinical animal and in vitro studies.

Chad Falciani, Founder and Chairman of the board for Curiteva, commented, “We’re extremely proud of this milestone. Surpassing 1,000 procedures and over 2,000 implants within a year of commercialization is a testament to our team’s consistent effort and focus. Next month we will be expanding our Inspire Technology into lumbar, adding momentum to our growth in the quarters to come.”

Glen Powell on blowing his final audition for Han Solo and his “wild take” on Batman

Glen Powell on blowing his final audition for Han Solo and his “wild take” on Batman

Glen Powell speaks about blowing his final audition to play Han Solo for Lucasfilm and his “wild take” on Batman.

Glen Powell may be blowing up thanks to roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, but like any other actor, he struggled on his way to the top and lost out on some major roles, including Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

While chatting with GQ UK, Glen Powell spoke of coming “agonizingly” close to playing Han Solo, only to drop the ball at the last moment. “I can joke about it now,” he said, “[but] I blew that final audition.” The role ultimately went to Alden Ehrenreich, but with Powell’s charisma, you can see why Disney was interested in him in the first place. The actor also said he screwed up auditions for Captain America and Cowboys & Aliens over the years, but he’s accepted that it just wasn’t meant to be.

It’s haunting when you blow those moments,” Powell said. “But that’s one of the parts of [the Hollywood myth] that’s not true. That was always somebody else’s ride to go on. You know what I mean? It was never yours to go on. If you put your time in, you’ll get your ride.

Powell has expressed a disinterest in superhero roles; in fact, he was one of the few young actors in Hollywood who didn’t audition for the new Superman movie. However, he said he was “on the set of Twisters with David Corenswet when he got the call. He’s a hustler and he deserves it.” That said, he does have an interest in the Dark Knight. “I was always a Batman guy,” Powell said. “I would have a wild take on Batman. It definitely would not be like a Matt Reeves tone — it’d probably be closer to Keaton.” Even if Powell doesn’t get to play Batman at some point, he has appeared in a Batman movie, getting his head smashed in by Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.

The actor has more than a few projects on his slate, including a remake of The Running Man with Edgar Wright, a reimagining of Warren Beatty’s Heaven Can Wait, an unknown J.J. Abrams event film, and Top Gun 3.

Glen Powell will next be seen in Twisters, playing storm-chasing superstar Tyler Owens. He stars alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones, who plays Kate Cooper, “a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better. As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.” The film will hit theaters on July 19th.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die reactions are here: Could it be the best of the franchise?

Bad Boys: Ride or Die reactions are here: Could it be the best of the franchise?

The first reactions to Bad Boys: Ride or Die are here and they’re extremely positive: Could it be the best in the franchise?

The Bad Boys are back, baby! There have been some early screenings of Bad Boys: Ride or Die in the past weeks, and the first reactions on social media are quite positive. Our own Chris Bumbray caught a screening last week and was a big fan, saying the sequel was just as much fun as the last movie.

Fun seems to be the name of the game, with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence proving they’ve still got it as Detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett. These types of first reactions are generally quite positive, but if you’ve been a fan of the Bad Boys franchise, particularly the last movie, chances are pretty good you’ll have a blast with this one as well.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die finds Lowrey and Burnett investigating corruption with the Miami PD. However, they’re turned into fugitives after being set up, forcing them to work outside the law to crack the case.

Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have said that Bad Boys: Ride or Die will have a lighter tone than its predecessor. “I think that there’s going to be way more comedy,” El Arbi said. “The third one had the dramatic tone. With this one, it’s really our purpose to get people laughing and having a good time in the theater. Martin [Lawrence] is going to a higher level in this one. This is the culmination of the Marcus Burnett arc.

In addition to Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, Bad Boys: Ride or Die will feature the return of a number of actors from previous movies, including Jacob Scipio, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola Núñez, and Joe Pantoliano as Captain Conrad Howard. New additions to the cast include Eric Dane, Ioan Gruffudd, and Rhea Seehorn. Tasha Smith is also onboard to play Marcus Burnett’s wife, replacing Theresa Randle, who played the character in the first three movies in the franchise.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is slated to hit theaters on June 7th.

Jaws 3 & Jaws: The Revenge to be released on 4K Ultra HD this summer, but we’re still waiting on Jaws 19

Jaws 3 & Jaws: The Revenge to be released on 4K Ultra HD this summer, but we’re still waiting on Jaws 19

Jaws 3 and Jaws: The Revenge will be released on 4K Ultra HD this summer, completing the giant shark franchise.

If you’ve been looking to bring your Jaws collection into the realm of 4K Ultra HD, we’ve got good news! The original Steven Spielberg movie (star Richard Dreyfuss recently found himself in hot water) was released on 4K in June 2020, followed by Jaws 2 in July 2023, and now Jaws 3 and Jaws: The Revenge will join them on July 23rd.

Below, you can check out some cover art for the 4K Ultra HD releases of Jaws 3 and Jaws: The Revenge, as well as a three-movie collection that will include all three sequels bundled together.

Jaws 3, 4K
Jaws: The Revenge, 4K
Jaws, 3 Movie Collection, 4K

Jaws 3, also known as Jaws 3-D, stars Dennis Quaid as Mike Brody, the son of Martin Brody, who is now the chief engineer at SeaWorld Orlando. When a giant thirty-five-foot Great White Shark infiltrates the park and begins killing the employees, it’s up to Mike to save the day, all in glorious 3D. The film is also famous for representing the height of Quaid’s cocaine habit in the ’80s, with the actor later saying that he was high in “every frame” in which he appears.

Jaws: The Revenge brought back Lorraine Gary as Ellen Brody, who is now widowed and convinced that another shark has been seeking revenge on her family. Upon release, the film was absolutely trashed by critics, even more so than Jaws 3, but honestly, it’s kind of fun. You’ve got to laugh at a movie with the tagline, “This time, it’s personal.” The film also stars Michael Caine, who took the role purely for the money after they offered him $1 million for less than two weeks of work. “It was only a 10-minute role. It was only 10 days’ work,” Caine said. “In Nassau. In the Bahamas. And they were going to pay me a million bucks for 10 days, and I said, ‘Hey, I’ll do that.’” In a story he’s told a handful of times, Caine insists that he hasn’t watched Jaws: The Revenge, but he has “seen the house it bought, and it’s marvelous.

With Jaws 3 and Jaws: The Revenge joining the first two films on 4K Ultra HD, the franchise will be complete… with the notable exception of Jaws 19.

Jeremy Renner ready for a Mission: Impossible return?

Jeremy Renner ready for a Mission: Impossible return?

Jeremy Renner hints that it’s possible he could return for another Mission: Impossible movie now that his daughter is older.

Many of us thought that Jeremy Renner returning to movies and TV was an impossible mission itself. But now he is on a tear, returning for Mayor of Kingstown and showing genuine interest in reprising some of his franchise roles. The MCU’s Hawkeye would be one of the more obvious choices, but what about Brandt from Mission: Impossible? As Renner suggested, that is one he could absolutely return for.

Speaking with Collider, Jeremy Renner said current conditions may make him ready to reprise William Brandt, the useful IMF analyst he played in 2011’s Ghost Protocol and 2015’s Rogue Nation. “I had to leave that. I was supposed to do more with them. I love those guys. I love Tom [Cruise] so much. We had so much fun, and I love that character a lot. It requires a lot of time away. It’s all in London. I had to go be a dad. It just wasn’t gonna work out then.” Renner opted to step away from the Mission: Impossible roles so he could focus on his duties as a father.

While the Mission: Impossible series has carried on just fine with Renner’s Brandt, his return would be a welcome one, as not only has the character proven to be a strong part-time addition but Renner, as we all know, remains committed to giving everything he has to fans.

Outside of Mission: possible, Renner has been open about returning as Hawkeye for more Avengers outings, sharing exactly this during an interview with our own Chris Bumbray while also noting that his constant recovery from his 2023 accident could play into a decision. “Getting asked back to do those things would always be an honour. I’m always willing to get ready. I think I need something to look forward to, or something to try and achieve…keeps me going in my progress.”

Whatever Jeremy Renner wants to commit to, we know that he’ll give it his all, displaying a level of resilience and strength that has wowed his fans in the time since his accident.

Would you want to see Jeremy Renner return as Brandt for another Mission: Impossible movie? Are there any other characters you want to see him reprise? Let us know in the comments section below.

Kinds of Kindness Official Trailer hits you like a fever dream

Kinds of Kindness Official Trailer hits you like a fever dream

Yorgos Lanthimos’ immediate follow-up to Poor Things with his Oscar-winning star has a released a new trailer.

The trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’ new film has arrived. The filmmaker has already followed up his Poor Things run with Kinds of Kindness, which reunites him with the Academy Award-winning star of his last film, Emma Stone, as well as her Poor Things co-star, Willem Dafoe. The new trailer from Searchlight Pictures displays the chaotic nature of the film, with all the clips feeling non-sequitur. And with Sweet Dreams providing the soundtrack for the trailer, it certainly hammers home the dream-like feeling of this abstract movie.

When director Yorgos Lanthimos and actress Emma Stone make a feature film together, Academy Award nominations follow. Their 2018 collaboration The Favourite was nominated in the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Production Design, Costume Design, Cinematography, and Editing categories, with supporting actresses Stone and Rachel Weisz also earning nominations and lead actress Olivia Colman taking home an Oscar for her performance. Their 2023 collaboration Poor Things racked up nominations in the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Original Score, Cinematography, Editing, and Supporting Actor (Mark Ruffalo) categories – and won Oscar gold for Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Costume Design, and Stone’s performance in the lead role. We’ll have to wait and see if Kinds of Kindness earns any nominations, but the odds are in its favor.

The film is officially described as a triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.

While walking the red carpet at the Golden Globes, Lanthimos described Kinds of Kindness as follows: “It’s three contemporary stories, and there’s a core of actors — seven total — who play one character in each story,” he said. “So, they’ll play three different characters.”

Joining Emma Stone in the cast are Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse), Jesse Plemons (Civil War), Hong Chau (The Menu), Margaret Qualley (Drive Away Dolls), Joe Alwyn (The Favourite), Mamoudou Athie (Jurassic World: Dominion), and Hunter Schafer (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Song Birds & Snakes).
