Neck Injury Prediction Rule Could Decrease Imaging Exposure in Children, Study Finds

Cervical spine injuries in children are relatively rare but can have serious consequences, like paralysis. The standard method for detecting these injuries involves X-rays and computed tomography (CT) scans, which expose children to radiation and may pose long-term health risks. In a study published June 4 in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, researchers from the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) outline a novel approach to predicting cervical spine injuries in children that reduces the need for imaging by half – while ensuring injuries are not missed.

“Quickly and accurately identifying children with potentially severe injuries is crucial for emergency medical providers,” said Julie Leonard, MD, MPH, who led the PECARN study team and is a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. “Our extensive, multicenter study demonstrates that using this rule, which relies on self-reported symptoms and physical examination, can prevent unnecessary radiation in children.”

Children are more sensitive to radiation exposure than adults because their tissues and cells are still developing. Imaging can also be stressful for a child and their family, contribute to long wait times in emergency departments, and come with high costs. In addition, research demonstrates disparities in imaging use in emergency departments. Evidence-based rules can help ensure standardization of care.

The new model incorporates nine risk factors, all identifiable by physical examination. Among the 22,000 study participants, only 0.2% without any of these risk factors had a clinically significant cervical spine injury, suggesting that these children can be safely evaluated without imaging.

BeenVerified Study Finds Impact of Disney Movies on Baby Names

BeenVerified Study Finds Impact of Disney Movies on Baby Names
Parents love “Encanto” with two names from the movie making the top 10 list

Disney movies are undoubtedly influential, and that influence can be seen in the trend of baby names that come from their iconic films. BeenVerified conducted an analysis of the Social Security Administration's baby names data set that examined Disney’s impact on baby naming trends in the U.S.

In years when a Disney film ranked in the top 50 at the box office, the likelihood of a leading character’s name from that film at least doubling in popularity was significantly higher, occurring 5.9% of the time. This rate is almost double that of the comprehensive name list.

Here are the top 10 Disney names by increase in popularity since 1980.

NameMovieIncrease in Popularity
MeridaBrave1150%
KodaBrother Bear937%
MoanaMoana488%
FinnickZootopia408%
MirabelEncanto271%
ArielThe Little Mermaid253%
FlynnTangled166%
RayaRaya the Last Dragon161%
CaminoEncanto142%
ElsaFrozen126%

We also found trends based on location as certain states across the country are more Disney-obsessed than others. We created a Disney score for each state based on the number of babies given one of the top 14 Disney names per 100,000 births during the films’ peak years. The top 10 states are as follows:

StateDisney Score
Nevada39.85
Arizona25.92
Washington21.88
Oregon21.73
Illinois21.58
California21.50
Colorado20.46
Utah19.06
New York18.25
Texas17.82

Cultural differences across the U.S. are also evident in the naming trends. For instance, Montana, known for its vast natural landscapes, ranked #1 for Koda, a bear character. Hawaii, with its strong connection to the ocean, ranked #1 for both Ariel and Moana, characters associated with life in or on the water. Louisiana, with its rich cultural heritage in New Orleans, ranked #1 for Tiana from The Princess and the Frog, a story set in "The Big Easy."

Methodology

For each year and name in the SSA dataset, a percent-change metric was calculated by dividing the count for that year by the average count from the previous five years. For example, for John in 2022, the count of Johns in 2022 was divided by the average count of Johns from 2017 to 2021. This percent change from the 5-year average served as the basis for ranking the names.

The Disney names analyzed were limited to characters from animated Disney films that made it into the top 50 films for domestic box office revenue since 1980, according to BoxOfficeMojo. The top rankings focused on the years the associated film was released or the year following. States were ranked based on the median per capita births for each of these names.

Meeting in South Korea National Assembly

On May 24, 2024, a Member of the National Assembly of South Korea, Han Jeoung-ae, welcomed Mr. Genlin, founder of the World Dog Alliance (WDA), back to her office in the Korean National Assembly. Their previous meeting was on February 23, 2024, celebrating the passage of South Korea's "Special Act on Prohibition of Dog Meat Consumption." During that time, Mr. Genlin, accompanied by a delegation of U.S. Congress members, visited Korea and was received by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and Representative Han Jeoung-ae.

Championing the Legislation Against Dog Meat Consumption

Representative Han Jeoung-ae, a key proponent of the legislation in the National Assembly, has served three consecutive terms and once served as the Minister of Environment. She is renowned as the "most passionate National Assembly member for animal welfare." Throughout the legislative process, the bipartisan Animal Welfare Forum, co-founded by Representative Park Hong-keun, steadfastly supported the bill. Thanks to their relentless efforts, the "Special Act on Prohibition of Dog Meat Consumption" passed with an overwhelming majority of 208 votes in favor and two abstentions on January 9, 2024, effectively ending the practice of consuming dog meat in Korea.

Further Advocacy for the International Agreement

Despite the law's passage, concerns remain regarding its implementation during the three-year transition period. In March 2024, the WDA's advocacy for the "International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats" was successfully incorporated into the U.S. "2024 Appropriations Act." This provision is mandatory and permanent, binding the U.S. Department of State to ensure its enforcement beyond the current administration.

Top-Level Discussions and Visits

Riding on the success of this legislative milestone, the WDA delegation visited Korea from May 23-24. During this visit, they met with Representatives Han Jeoung-ae and Park Hong-keun and toured local animal welfare organizations KAWA (Korea Animal Welfare Association) and KARA (Korea Animal Rights Advocates), both instrumental in the legislative process.

Strategic Dialogues on Future Initiatives

In these discussions, they exchanged views on initiating the "International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats," incorporating animal protection into school curricula, and embedding animal protection laws in the Korean Constitution. The Korean legislators responded positively, expressing commitment to advancing the agreement internationally through concerted efforts with other countries.

A New Horizon for Animal Welfare

The WDA's initiatives have provided reassurance and fresh perspectives for Korea's movement against the consumption of dogs and cats, laying a solid foundation for the international promotion of the agreement.

The World Dog Alliance is a leading international organization dedicated to ending the consumption of dog and cat meat worldwide.

I Am Legend 2: Michael B. Jordan says sequel script is still being written

I Am Legend 2: Michael B. Jordan says sequel script is still being written

Michael B. Jordan says the script for I Am Legend 2 is still being written, but he’s “really excited” about working with Will Smith.

It’s been over two years since it was first announced that Michael B. Jordan would be joining Will Smith in I Am Legend 2, and the actor has provided an update while speaking with People.

Before you get too excited, it doesn’t sound like I Am Legend 2 is going to be heading our way anytime soon, as Jordan said the script for the sequel is still in the process of being written. “We’re still working on the script and getting that up to par,” Jordan said. “It doesn’t have a release date or anything like that. I’m not sure exactly where we’re going to be filming that one, but I’m really excited to get in front of the camera with him. Being somebody that I’ve looked up to for a really long time, to be able to work with Will is something I’m really looking forward to. I’m really excited.” The script is being written by Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the first movie with Mark Protosevich.

Loosely based on Richard Matheson’s novel of the same name, I Am Legend starred Will Smith as a U.S. Army virologist who struggles to develop a cure for a virus that has wiped out most of mankind while also defending himself from a bunch of nocturnal mutants. While the theatrical version ended with the death of Smith’s character, the sequel will go with the alternate ending in which he survived.

Last year, Goldsman told Deadline that the sequel would take place a “few decades” after the first movie.

I’m obsessed with The Last of Us, where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20-30-year lapse. You see how the Earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens? That will be especially visual in New York. I don’t know if they’ll climb up to the Empire State Building, but the possibilities are endless. We trace back to the original Matheson book, and the alternate ending as opposed to the released ending in the original film. What Matheson was talking about was that man’s time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end. That’s a really interesting thing we’re going to get to explore. There will be a little more fidelity to the original text.

Will Smith recently said that Jordan and himself “had a couple weeks together about a month ago. I think it’s looking good. [We have some] really solid ideas… I think we’re going to make it on screen together. That dude is the truth, so I would love to do that.” It’s been a while since I watched the movie, but I do recall enjoying it, at least the first half, with Smith’s character surviving alongside his dog. I am curious to see where a sequel could go, and with over fifteen years of CG advancement, I’ve got to believe that they’ll actually be able to give us more realistic Darkseekers this time.

Bring Her Back: Billy Barratt & more join Sally Hawkins in the cast of horror film from Talk to Me directors

Talk to Me’s Danny and Michael Philippou are moving forward with the horror film Bring Her Back, assembling Sally Hawkins’ supporting cast

Following the success of their feature debut, the horror film Talk to Me, the directing duo of Danny and Michael Philippou signed on to make a new film adaptation of the Street Fighter video game franchise, started developing a Talk to Me sequel titled Talk 2 Me, and let it be known that they had already shot some sort of Talk to Me prequel (but it’s not clear if or when we’ll get to see that footage), had an action drama project they’d like to make, and also had a horror script called Bring Her Back that they wanted to get into production. The last film on that list is the one that’s going to be made first, and just last month we learned that two-time Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins of The Shape of Water and Blue Jasmine has signed on to star in Bring Her Back. Now Variety reports that she’s being joined in the cast by Billy Barratt (Invasion), Jonah Wren Philips (Sweet Tooth), Sally-Anne Upton (Wentworth), Stephen Phillips (The Leftovers), and newcomer Sora Wong. Details on the characters these actors will be playing have not been revealed.

Plot details are also being kept under wraps, but filming is scheduled to begin this summer.

Bring Her Back is coming our way from A24, the company that also sent Talk to Me out into the world. The film is being produced by Talk To Me producers Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton of Causeway Films. A Deadline report about the film revealed that the Philippous are also working on “a documentary project inspired by their own journey into the world of international underground deathmatch wrestling.”

In case you missed Talk to Me, that movie has the following synopsis: When a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, they become hooked on the new thrill, until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces. Sophia Wilde (You Don’t Know Me), Miranda Otto (Annabelle: Creation), Alexandra Jensen (Frayed), Joe Bird (First Day), Otis Djanji (Aquaman), and Zoe Terakes (Wentworth) star.

Are you a fan of Talk to Me, and are you looking forward to seeing what the Philippous do with Bring Her Back? What do you think of the cast they have assembled? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Diablo Cody to produce Death of a Pop Star film about an undead idol and the Grim Reaper who protects her

Diablo Cody to produce Death of a Pop Star film about an undead idol and the Grim Reaper who protects her

Violet Karim’s Death of a Pop Star about an idol brought back to life by a Grim Reaper is getting a film adaptation from Diablo Cody

Start making friendship bracelets and hold onto the railing when ascending a flight of stairs because Violet Karim’s webcomic Death of a Pop Star is getting a film adaptation from Diablo Cody (Lisa Frankenstein, Tully, Juno, Jennifer’s Body) and Mason Novick (Tully, ARQ, Juno)!

Death of a Pop Star revolves around Sophie, a gifted but somewhat naive pop star on the verge of superstardom. As she’s about to take her blossoming career to the next level, Sophie tumbles down a flight of stairs and wakes up in Hell. Luckily for Sophie, the Grim Reaper is a fan and, unbeknownst to Sophie, strikes a deal to bring her back to life. However, when management notices the numbers don’t add up, the Reaper must return to the surface to correct his mistake or risk the wrath of the underworld. Things become more complicated when Sophie realizes she didn’t fall down those stairs; someone pushed her! Together with the Reaper and a group of unlikely friends, they attempt to solve the mystery of Sophie’s untimely demise.

Screenwriter and producer Isa Mazzei is penning the screenplay. Mazzei is one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film. She wrote and produced Blumhouse’s psychological horror film Cam and produced the 2022 eco-thriller How to Blow Up a Pipeline.

Diablo Cody and Mason Novick will produce Death of a Pop Star with Aron Levitz, David Madden, and Jason Goldberg of Wattpad Webtoon Studios executive producing.

“‘Death of a Pop Star’ is one of those titles that just lends itself so perfectly to a live-action adaptation,” said Wattpad Webtoon Studios president Levitz. “Violet created such a mesmerizing, must-read story, and when it came to choosing a partner to help us bridge the gap between the living and the dead, who else does that better than Diablo Cody?”

“As a huge fan of both pop music and the undead, I am so excited to help bring this offbeat story to the screen,” said Cody.

I’ve read Death of a Pop Star since its Webtoon debut, and it’s one of my favorite webcomics on the service. Sophie is a delightful character to follow through this bizarre, hilarious murder mystery filled with unconventional characters, intrigue, karma, and destiny.

Reviving the Clam Population in Indian River Lagoon

Today, Rivers are Life proudly premieres its newest film "The Captain & The Super Clams'' which takes viewers to the east coast of Florida to Indian River Lagoon. This journey brings us alongside River Heroes Dr. Todd Osbourne and fishing legend Captain Blair Wiggins, as they work to restore the clam population that was decimated by unregulated commercial clamming in the 1990s.

From being on the water each day, Captain Blair noticed a dramatic decrease in the local clam population. Clams work as natural filtration systems and the water quality began to deteriorate in their absence, creating mass algae blooms that blocked sunlight from reaching the seagrass, which is a vital part of the Indian River Lagoon’s ecosystem. Captain Blair knew that action needed to be taken to bring the clams back, so in 2019, he teamed up with Dr. Todd Osbourne and the Indian River Clam Restoration Project.

After days of searching for surviving clams, the team was only able to find 39 that survived in an area that once hosted over 9 billion clams. These 39 “super clams” were then transported to the University of Florida’s Whitney Laboratory where the team carefully bred them, producing millions of clams that were ready to be returned to the lagoon. The Indian River Clam Restoration Project team continues to carefully monitor the quality of the ecosystem by collecting data and conducting scientific water tests regularly. The team is also taking an innovative approach to building new breeding areas within the lagoon, such as using a drone to spread new clams across large areas which used to be done by hand.

"As an avid outdoor enthusiast, what was happening here in the lagoon was easily noticeable and we knew that changes needed to be made," said Dr. Todd Osbourne. "Teaming up with Blair and the Indian River Clam Restoration Project has allowed us to take a scientific approach while incorporating local knowledge and grassroots efforts from folks who love living and fishing here."

"The Captain & The Super Clams" showcases the positive impact that a local community can have on their natural surroundings. By monitoring and noticing the negative changes in the lagoon over time, the Indian River Lagoon community was able to pivot and provide resources that will help restore their local waterway, bringing a thriving clam population back to naturally filter the water.

"The Captain & The Super Clams" premieres June 5, 2024
