NCQA to Host Health Innovation Summit to Focus on Advancing Healthcare Quality

The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) today announced it will host the second annual 2023 Health Innovation Summit in Orlando, FL, October 23-25, 2023. NCQA is convening more than 1,600 healthcare leaders, industry innovators and policymakers for three days of inspirational keynotes, panel discussions and peer learning to improve healthcare quality and health equity.

"The Health Innovation Summit is an opportunity for people committed to healthcare quality to connect with others to explore innovative solutions that improve healthcare," said NCQA President Margaret E. O'Kane. "We're proud to convene policymakers and leaders from large health systems, health plans and health information technology firms to learn from each other and tackle some of today's greatest challenges."

The NCQA Health Innovation Summit will address diverse aspects of quality, including digital quality solutions, health equity, value-based care and next-generation technologies. It will feature more than 150 keynote presentations, interview-style fireside chats, plenary panels, breakout sessions and demonstrations of novel products and services.

Shedding Light on the Burden Faced by Caregivers of Craniopharyngioma Survivors

The Raymond A. Wood Foundation (RAWF), dedicated to advancing research and support for craniopharyngioma survivors and their families, proudly announces the release of its inaugural research study, entitled "Caregiver Burden and its Relationship to Health-Related Quality of Life in Craniopharyngioma Survivors," published in the prestigious Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. This groundbreaking study was spearheaded by esteemed RAWF members, including Nathalie Kayadjanian, PhD (Scientific Advisor), Eugenie Hsu, PhD (Board Member and Caregiver), Amy Wood (Co-founder, Executive Director, and Caregiver), and Dean Carson, PhD (Board Member, Research Chair).

Craniopharyngioma (CP), a rare noncancerous brain tumor typically located in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, presents complex and chronic medical conditions necessitating lifelong care and management. While the negative impact of CP on survivor quality of life is well-documented, its effects on caregivers have remained in the shadows. By unveiling the burden of disease borne by CP caregivers, this study not only sheds light on their challenges but also highlights the socio-economic toll on CP families and society as a whole.

As a research-driven patient advocacy organization, RAWF stands as a beacon of understanding and support for craniopharyngioma survivors and their caregivers. RAWF was founded and is predominantly powered by caregivers themselves who possess firsthand experiences unique to those immersed in the daily care of survivors. These caregiver insights reveal unmet needs often overlooked in clinical and research contexts. For instance, a comprehensive list of health issues affecting survivors post-treatment was compiled, extending beyond known medical literature.

Analysis of responses from 82 caregivers of CP survivors who participated in an online survey revealed that caregivers reported an average of 13 out of 29 health issues in survivors following tumor treatment. Hyperphagia—an excessive and insatiable hunger, poor satiety, food-seeking—emerged as a significant factor impacting survivor health-related quality of life and incurring significant caregiver burden. Caregiver burden, though moderate, surpassed levels seen in caregivers for conditions like Alzheimer's disease, dementia or chronic pain. Strikingly, caregiver burden was independent of factors such as caregiver education and income but strongly correlated with the number and type of health issues in survivors, especially those exhibiting symptoms of hypothalamic dysfunction. The study also unveiled the starkly poor health-related quality of life in survivors, with this factor playing a predictive role in caregiver burden. These findings underscore the multifaceted challenges faced by caregivers and survivors of craniopharyngioma, emphasizing the critical need for holistic support.

"I am thrilled to see the first study ever conducted by the Raymond A. Wood Foundation being published in the world's leading peer-reviewed journal for endocrine clinical research and clinical practice," stated Dr. Kadyadjanian, author of the report. "The findings of this study are important as they not only reveal the critical unmet need for support of caregivers of individuals with craniopharyngioma but also highlight critical determinants of caregiver burden, mainly the survivor's multiple health issues including hyperphagia and other hypothalamic dysfunction symptoms. This study is a great example of a patient and caregiver-driven research study that will guide future lines of research to improve the lives of those affected by craniopharyngioma." 

In recognition of the prevalence and profound impact of hyperphagia on CP survivors and caregivers, RAWF is committed to advancing research in this critical area. Given the dearth of research on this topic, we are embarking on a rigorous study to comprehensively characterize and measure hyperphagia in this unique population. Additionally, recognizing the importance of capturing both patient and caregiver perspectives regarding the disease's impact, treatment, and unmet needs, we are developing a patient registry that will serve as a valuable resource, providing evidence-based data to inform and guide future research and clinical studies aimed at addressing the needs of patients and caregivers alike.

As the summer movie season comes to a close, it seems quite stacked on the backend, and yet, nothing has been coming close to Barbie‘s numbers. Since the release of Barbie and Oppenheimer, cinemas have seen the release of Haunted Mansion, Talk to Me, Meg 2: The Trench, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Strays, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and most recently, Blue Beetle. The DC superhero has not put up flashy numbers; however, it did become the first film to reach number one since Barbie had released.

This week, Gran Turismo enters the race. According to Deadline, the Neill Blomkamp video game adaptation that’s based on a true story is tracking to cross the finish line at the top this week with $12 million upon opening, which is a fallen projection from the original $15 million. Sony’s marketing department is taking a small cue from The Flash out of necessity due to the Screen Actor’s Guild strikes forbidding the movie’s stars from promoting the film. The studio is relying on good old-fashioned word of mouth to help generate hype.

Gran Turismo was originally scheduled to open on August 11, but the studio would instead opt for a two-week preview screening prior to its release this week. The buzz being garnered from the previews is estimated to add $3 million extra to the opening gross. The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes has shot up to a rating of 98% while critics have been less kind with an aggregate rating of 59%.

The coming weekend also sees the celebration of National Cinema Day, in which ticket prices call back to the golden age of just $4 for every showing of every movie. Last year, business for films like Top Gun: Maverick and Bullet Train shot up Friday to Saturday with +26% and +117%. This year, it only falls on Sunday, but with a huge crowd out to take advantage of the holiday, the newest release could seemingly benefit the most.

So, could the audience reception be the decider? Our own Chris Bumbray’s review does think it is a worthy enough big screen experience, saying, “One thing’s sure; Gran Turismo is a movie made for the big screen. In this streaming era, it’s hard to get people out to theatres for a non-franchise film, and basing this one on a video game is a sneaky way of doing a classic sports movie while still having the advantage of known IP.”

HelloPrenup, the premier platform for data-driven prenuptial agreement insights, released the results of their 2023 prenuptial agreement study, which not only highlights the essential metrics surrounding prenups but also shatters several prevailing myths. The most unexpected of these findings? A substantial 83.81% of respondents reported feeling more connected with their partner post-prenup completion. 

This study went deep into understanding the motivations and dynamics of couples who signed prenups within the last 20 years and unveiled some noteworthy insights: 

1. Demographics & Relationship Status: The majority of participants were married (77.14%) and were predominantly between the ages of 30 to 45 years. 

2. Income Diversity: Prenuptial agreements are not just for the wealthy. The study debunked the misconception, showcasing that individuals across various financial backgrounds prioritize prenups as a forward-thinking financial tool. In fact, 25.46% of respondents who initiated the idea of the prenup reported individual income of less than $50,000/year.

3. Regional Preferences: New York emerged as the most prominent state for prenups, with 19.05% of the participants creating their prenups there, followed closely by California and Florida. 

4. Initiation: Over half (50.25%) of the respondents were the first to bring up the idea of a prenup to their partner, emphasizing the significance of individual financial autonomy and planning. 

5. Motivations: Interestingly, of the folks who initiated the prenup, 47.27% were primarily looking to define property as separate or marital (among others). However, of the folks who were proposed a prenup by their partner, the majority of folks were looking to protect against debt 59.26%, highlighting the value of prenups as not only protecting against assets but the intention of protecting against debt as well. 

6. Prenup Purpose: Beyond the conventional reasons like defining assets and protecting against their partner's debts, many respondents indicated motives like mapping out inheritances (33.33%), addressing spousal support (23.81%), and even discussing unique lifestyle choices (23.81%) affecting obligations while married and in the event of an unlikely separation or divorce (21.9%).

The Shaquille O'Neal Foundation today announced their third annual fundraising gala, The Event, presented by Pepsi Stronger Together on October 7, 2023 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. This year's gala will be hosted by Actor, Comedian, and Host Joel McHale, and will feature an all-star music and comedy line-up, including performances from EGOT-winning singer-songwriter John Legend; GRAMMY-winning country-pop duo Dan + Shay; 8x GRAMMY award winner DJ Pee .Wee (aka Anderson .Paak) spinning an all vinyl set; EGOT Award-winner Jennifer Hudson; and Emmy Award-winning comedian Ray Romano. Returning for his third year as Music Director is GRAMMY and Emmy Award winner Adam Blackstone.

The Event is the primary fundraiser for The Shaquille O'Neal Foundation, established by NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal. The Shaquille O'Neal Foundation aims to create pathways for underserved youth to help them achieve their full potential. The Arena offers comfortable seating for as many as 16,800 with excellent sightlines and state-of-the-art acoustics, lighting and sound. Prominent events to date have included world championship fights between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson as well as Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez as well as Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao; and concerts by The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Bette Midler, George Strait, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, U2, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Coldplay, Alicia Keys, Jimmy Buffett and the Barbra Streisand Millennium Concert. The MGM Grand Garden Arena also has been home to annual events including the Academy of Country Music Awards, the Billboard Music Awards, the Latin GRAMMY Awards, iHeartRadio Music Festival, Pac-12 Men's Basketball Championship and Frozen Fury NHL pre-season games hosted by the Los Angeles Kings.
