Jaws was such a nightmare to shoot that Steven Spielberg was certain that he’d be relegated to making indies.
The tales from behind the scenes of 1975’s Jaws are as famous as the movie itself: multiple script rewrites, troubles shooting on the ocean, a ballooning budget, a shark that was being a bit of a diva, and on and on. And Steven Spielberg, who hadn’t made a movie with such stakes before, had a feeling that Jaws would send him into independents.
In an interview excerpted from the upcoming book “Spielberg: The First Ten Years”, the director recalls not only the terribly taxing production of Jaws but how it convinced him it would be his last major studio project. “I had terrible, despairing days where I could see nobody hiring me again, and I could imagine Jaws being my last studio movie. I thought I would probably go on to make independent films if I could get doctors and dentists to put up enough money to finance a little movie with four people playing cards in a room. Basically, I didn’t have much hope for any longevity for my career, but I wanted to finish Jaws because I had never stopped believing in the movie.”
Such belief – and, you know, being one of the most skilled directors of his generation – pushed Jaws out of the Atlantic and into the stratosphere, terrorizing moviegoers from day one, becoming not just the highest-grossing film of 1975 but of all time…before that pesky George Lucas got in its way. Even with the financial successes of droids, James Cameron’s blue people and the likes of the Avengers, Jaws still ranks as one of the biggest hits at the box office, sitting in the top 10 when inflation is accounted for.
And of course Jaws wouldn’t put Spielberg anywhere near the indies (or television, where he dabbled prior and hopes to return some day), hitting a string of mostly hits that included Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark and 1941…if any of his movies would knock him down a peg, it’d be that one…And instead of accepting accolades under the tent at the Independent Spirit Awards, he’d be one of the most nominated directors at the Academy Awards, even nabbing two Oscars (so far?). Pretty good for a guy who went from semi-trucks to great whites.
Where does Jaws rank in your list of top Steven Spielberg movies? Give us your top 3 below!
Barbenheimer is determined to not only be an American sensation as the unique double bill collectively total over a billion internationally.
Barbenheimer fever catches worldwide! The month ends with the historic dual summer outing from two Academy Award-nominated filmmakers sweeping the global box office and bringing over a collective billion. Deadline has reported that the pink-dominated film, starring Margot Robbie in the role made famous by the legacy toy line, has crossed $755 million at the international box office. Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s ultra-serious historical drama follows closely, which is impressive for a film of its nature, with a worldwide total of $400 million.
These figures come in as both movies make their sophomore week debut. Barbie‘s domestic run dropped from its immensely successful debut and garnered $93 million over the weekend, which brings its North American cume to a total of $351.4 million. According to Deadline, Mattel’s prized title collected $122.2 million in 69 markets, just 32% off opening. The international cume is $423.1 million. Overseas, the Greta Gerwig-directed pic maintained its No. 1 slot in 57 markets with exceptional holds in numerous markets including Taiwan (+37%), Germany (+29%), Hong Kong (+19%), Holland (+11%), Singapore (+10%), China (-11%), Australia (-11%), France (-20%), Argentina (-25%), Indonesia (-27%), Italy (-30%), Spain (-30%) and the UK (-32%).
As for Oppenheimer, the destroyer of worlds is destroying global numbers as well, grossing a worldwide number of $72.4 million with an offshore cume of $226.3 million. The full tally for the Cillian Murphy drama finishes the weekend at $400.4 million at the international box office in its sophomoric weekend. Even after a juggernaut like The Dark Knight made Nolan a name to be reckoned with, Oppenheimer is estimated to be the biggest Nolan film of all time in 28 markets including India, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Turkey. In 40, it’s the top non-Batman movie for Nolan including Mexico, Brazil, Norway, Philippines and Chile. Overseas, it is running above Dunkirk, Interstellar, Tenet and The Dark Knight Rises at the same point of release.
Although Tom Cruise’s latest big action effort, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, didn’t quite match up to his previous outings, the film nearly matches Oppenheimer‘s take with $448.5 million. And the sequel continues to chug along despite some really big competition.

Yet, the specifics of what a paediatric speech pathologist does and how it differs from behavioural therapy are often shrouded in mystery. Here, the leading paediatric speech pathologist Adelaide-wide, Chat Well, explains the intricacies of a paediatric speech pathologist's work, shedding light on the expert care they provide to support families in Adelaide.

Paediatric speech pathologists are highly trained professionals, skilled in assessing, diagnosing and treating a wide spectrum of speech, language, social and literacy delays that children may encounter. Compass Health Center, the leading provider of non-hospital intermediate-level behavioral health services in Illinois, announced today the launch of services in Silver Spring, Maryland, beginning in September 2023. The company will immediately address the dearth of mental health care available in the state in addition to creating more than 100 new jobs. This expansion is part of the organization's mission to bridge the behavioral health care gap in the state, offering patient-centered care, both in-person in Silver Spring and virtually across Maryland.
In Maryland, 1M + children and adults struggle with mental health conditions, impacting individuals, families, and communities across the state. High school students with depression are over twice as likely to drop out than their peers. Shockingly, 45.5% of Marylanders aged 12-17 with depression received no care last year. Furthermore, 188,000 adults in Maryland had thoughts of suicide in the past year. These statistics highlight our communities' urgent need for comprehensive mental health care and support.
Compass Health Center, based in Chicago, was co-founded by esteemed child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrists, Dr. David Schreiber, M.D., and Dr. Claudia Welke, M.D. Their unique model of care, grounded in their hospital inpatient experiences, aims to prevent costly and distressing ER visits and inpatient hospitalizations while providing a more effective level of care.
Unique to Compass Health Center is its commitment to quick access, termed "speed to care," which ensures assessments within 24 hours of initial inquiry to prevent unnecessary ER visits and inpatient admissions. Further, psychiatric evaluations are conducted within 24-48 hours of starting the program.
"Compass Health Center has always been driven by a mission to provide timely and specialized mental health care to those in need. As we see alarming trends of mental health issues rising across the nation, it is crucial to bring our proven model of care to the people of Maryland," says David Schreiber, M.D., CEO and co-founder of Compass Health Center. "By expanding our services here, we hope to provide much-needed support to the local community, contribute to the state's economy by creating numerous job opportunities, and pioneer a new standard for mental health care that is accessible, effective, and patient-centric."
Leading the expansion in Maryland are the new Clinical Vice President, Erin E. VanLuven, LCSW-C, an expert in multi-site, multi-state, integrated psychiatric care delivery, and the Medical Director, Dr. Marissa Leslie, a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist with over 20 years of leadership and clinical experience. Their combined expertise will steer Compass's multidisciplinary team in offering Partial Hospitalization (PHP), Intensive Outpatient (IOP), Outpatient Psychiatry, and Compass Echo, an evidenced-based program designed to support Compass patients transitioning from IOP. These services cater initially to individuals aged 12 to adulthood. Compass Maryland plans to further expand its care to children aged 12 and younger later in the year.
"Launching these programs to the Maryland community is an incredible opportunity for myself, our launch team and for Compass Health Center as a whole. As clinicians, we are committed to breaking down the stigma, providing equitable and timely access to high quality and evidence-based mental health care and supporting the people of Maryland who are struggling with very real mental health difficulties," said Erin VanLuven, Vice President and Site Leader, Compass Health Center - Maryland.
"There are not a lot of partial hospitalization or intensive outpatient resources in the Maryland community today, some but not enough to meet the need. Our hope is really to work collaboratively with the healthcare community to provide a necessary service that can decrease ER visits and inpatient admissions and increase the health outcomes of the individuals we serve. High-quality mental health treatment saves lives, increases quality of life and decreases physical health problems and problems associated with employee burn-out. The people of Maryland deserve these services and we are honored to partner with the community to make them accessible," VanLuven continued.
In addition to the in-person services in Silver Spring, Compass Health Center is extending its reach to all corners of the state through its virtual services. "Our virtual services are designed to transcend geographical boundaries and ensure that anyone in Maryland, regardless of their location, has access to the high-quality psychiatric and behavioral health care they need," said Dr. Schreiber. "In a world where many are unable to access traditional forms of care due to distance or time constraints, we believe our approach offers an essential solution."
Compass Health Center is now scheduling assessments, ahead of its September launch. Upon launch, Compass plans to be in network with most Commercial Insurance carriers.

Director Joe Lo Truglio’s horror film Outpost will be reaching the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand in September
After doing a lot of work in the comedy genre – Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The State, Viva Variety, Upright Citizens Brigade, Wet Hot American Summer, Reno 911!, Superbad, Pineapple Express, Paul, Role Models, Wanderlust, I Love You, Man… the list is long – Joe Lo Truglio has decided to make his feature directorial debut with a horror film called Outpost. Gravitas Ventures gave the film a theatrical and VOD release in the US back in May (you can find it on Amazon at THIS LINK), and now Lightbulb Film Distribution has announced that they’ll be bringing Outpost to the UK and Ireland on September 11th with a digital and VOD release. The movie will then be given the same sort of release in Australia and New Zealand on September 13th.
Also scripted by Lo Truglio, Outpost has the following synopsis: After a violent assault, a woman asks her best friend for help escaping an abusive ex. She’s given a job as a fire lookout in the mountains of northern Idaho, hoping the peaceful solitude will heal her trauma. But the PTSD and isolation have other plans, and it’s suddenly a fight to save herself and the town.
Beth Dover (who was in Orange Is the New Black and happens to be married to Lo Truglio) stars in the film alongside Ato Essandoh (Chicago Med), Dylan Baker (Trick ‘r Treat), Becky Ann Baker (A Simple Plan), Dallas Roberts (The Walking Dead), Ta’Rea Campbell (Blue Bloods), Tim Neff (The Irishman), and D.R. Anderson (The Ward).
Speaking with the Spokesman-Review, Lo Truglio said he wanted to make a horror movie because “There is nothing like getting a laugh or a scream. They both make you feel good. I’ve been a horror fan since I was 13. I was into horror before I got into comedy. Horror made me interested in movies and filmmaking. This film has been in the works for 37 years. I had to make Outpost.“
He was so determined to make Outpost, he even financed the movie himself.
As a horror fan who has also been a longtime fan of Lo Truglio’s comedy work, I will definitely be watching Outpost at some point… And the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand distribution news has reminded me that I need to go ahead and check it out already.
Lo Truglio had this to say about the Lightbulb distribution deal: “Growing up in the 70s and 80s, my love for horror began very early and I can’t wait for a global audience to see this movie. Making Outpost was a 13 year-old’s dream. We’re thrilled to be working with Lightbulb, who share the same passion for the genre.“
Lightbulb’s Peter Thompson added: “We are delighted to be bringing Outpost to audiences in the UK, Ireland, Australia & New Zealand. Joe Lo Truglio is a brilliant comedy actor, but this suspenseful, revenge thriller showcases his skills as a writer and director. Anchored by Beth Dover’s lead performance and captured by cinematographer Frank Barrera, Outpost reminds us that trauma is frightening but survival is thrilling.“

With just over two months until its debut, Disney+ has released another trailer and poster for season two of Loki.
Disney+ continues to count down to the season two debut of Loki, offering up another trailer and poster – following the one that dropped just last week – for the much-anticipated sophomore season.
The new trailer for the second season of Loki shows off a lot of what made the first so successful, as it stands as a display for the humor, special effects and tone that helped make the first the most-watched Marvel show yet. It also showcases new cast member Ke Huy Quan – playing an archivist with the Time Variance Authority – who is clearly choosing promising projects after his Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All At Once. Also on the cast front, perhaps wisely, the trailer for season two of Loki is far from being a promo for Jonathan Majors, who is playing Kang variant Victor Timely. Majors of course has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons as of late. Despite a remarkably strong start to 2023 with Sundance hit Magazine Dreams, a turn in Creed III and playing main baddie Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quauntumania, allegations of abuse have plagued the months that followed, putting Marvel in a difficult spot on deciding how to proceed with the actor, as Kang is poised to be the MCU’s next Thanos.
Loki so far has been a hit with both critics and audiences. In addition to its strong reviews and viewer reception, the first season snagged a slew of Creative Arts Emmy nominations as well as earning attention from MTV and the People’s Choice Awards to major guilds like SAG and the WGA.
Season two of Loki, which “thrusts the infamous God of Mischief into a new set of adventures with the TVA”, comes to Disney+ on October 6th.
Erin Martin, who wrote two episodes of the first season, has penned all six episodes of season two’s. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, the duo behind sci-fi horror flick Synchronic, directing the majority of the episodes.
What did you think of the trailer for season two of Loki? How do you think it will compare to the first? Give us your predictions in the comments section below!
