Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie’s “gnarly” R-rated movie is planned for post-Dead Reckoning Part Two

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie’s “gnarly” R-rated movie is planned for post-Dead Reckoning Part Two

Both the director and star of the big Mission: Impossible blockbusters are planning to dip their toes back into the more violent films.

While Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One didn’t quite break the bank as predicted, Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie won’t let it slow a good partnership down. The two have collaborated on a number of Cruise’s latest outings, including the last three Mission: Impossible sequels, Top Gun: Maverick and Jack Reacher. McQuarrie gained recognition with his script for The Usual Suspects, which he parlayed into his debut outing as both the writer and director of a violent, crime thriller with a side of dark comedy titled The Way of the Gun back in 2000.

McQuarrie is coming back to his harder-edged roots on a secret project with Cruise that he’s describing as a “gnarly” R-rated film. Back in 2020, McQuarrie hinted to Empire about the project and speaking once again with Empire for his in-depth talk about Dead Reckoning Part One, he confirms the project is still on its way as he and writer Erik Jendresen have written the script. McQuarrie explained, “There’s a movie that Cruise and I are talking about doing next or in some probable next, that Erik and I developed together – what has been referred to on the internet as ‘The Gnarly Movie’. It’s that movie that they’re all asking for, and that we want to do.”

In 2020, the Mission: Impossible filmmaker reflected on the first Jack Reacher when he first revealed details about the “gnarly” film as the pair first wanted to take the Jack Reacher franchise to a darker tone, “Tom and I were talking about, had the series continued, to take Reacher to a place where, in the post-Deadpool, post-Joker world, Reacher could have been an R-rated movie and an R-rated franchise and really fed into the brutality of those books. We were fully ready to lean into that.” Then, he goes on to tease this secret project, “It’s a very un-Tom character, and we have plans for an even more un-Tom character that we’ve been talking about, which I’m hopeful about in the future. […] The franchise has moved on, and we haven’t. So we’ve now got stuff in the hopper. The [Jack Reacher] stuff we’re talking about now is tinker toys [compared to it], I’m actually very, very excited.”

Insidious: The Red Door has the highest worldwide box office of the entire franchise

Insidious: The Red Door has become the highest-grossing film in the Insidious franchise at the worldwide box office

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HA1sgWMFewc

I haven’t seen much chatter about Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth film in the Insidious horror franchise (you can read our review HERE), but movie-goers have obviously been showing up for it. The film had a very successful opening weekend, drawing in $32.65 million at the domestic box office and $64 million worldwide on a budget that’s said to be around $16 million. Now The Numbers has confirmed that Insidious: The Red Door has managed to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise at the worldwide box office. It’s currently sitting at a total of $174,382,000, surpassing its predecessor Insidious: The Last Key‘s final count of $172,811,971. And its theatrical run isn’t over yet.

As of right now, Insidious: The Red Door‘s domestic number sits at $78,082,000, so Insidious: Chapter 2 still holds the domestic record of $83,586,447. But if The Red Door can manage to pull in another $5 million and change at home, it will become the record holder here as well.

Insidious: The Red Door marks the feature directorial debut of Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2 star Patrick Wilson. The screenplay was written by Halloween Kills co-writer Scott Teems, based on an idea from Leigh Whannell, who created the franchise with James Wan. The story catches up with the family from the first two films, the Lamberts, ten years after the end of Insidious 2. Josh Lambert heads east to drop his son Dalton off at an idyllic, ivy-covered university. However, Dalton’s college dream becomes a nightmare when the repressed demons of his past suddenly return to haunt them both.

Wilson reprises the role of Josh Lambert, with Rose Byrne returning as his wife Renai, Ty Simpkins as their son Dalton, and Andrew Astor as their son Foster. Also in the cast are Sinclair Daniel (Madam Secretary), Peter Dager (Demente Criminal), and Hiam Abbass (Blade Runner 2049).

Insidious: The Red Door comes to us from Screen Gems and Stage 6 Films. Jason Blum produced the film for Blumhouse, alongside James Wan, Leigh Whannell, and Oren Peli. Steven Schneider, Ryan Turek, and Brian Kavanaugh Jones serve as executive producers.

Sony already has the next Insidious movie, a spin-off called Thread: An Insidious Tale, in the works. Jeremy Slater is writing/directing and Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani are attached to star. That project just has to wait for the Hollywood strikes to come to an end before it can move forward.

Have you seen Insidious: The Red Door? What do you think of it having the highest worldwide box office of the franchise? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

WTF Happened to Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping?

WTF Happened to Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping?

We look back at the 2016 box office flop turned cult hit Poster: Never Stop Never Stopping, starring the Lonely Island.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping should have been a hit movie. It came out when Andy Samberg was riding high on Saturday Night Live, thanks to the innovative, viral shorts he made with his crew, The Lonely Island. Their “Lazy Sunday” and “D*ck in a Box” shorts were early YouTube smash hits. This movie featured Samberg as Conor4Real, a pop star who split with his former boy band Style Boyz to go solo. It was a loving send-up of the music industry, with Conor having some similarities to Samberg’s pal Justin Timberlake and his split from NSYNC. Always one to appreciate a good joke, Timberlake had an extended cameo in the film as Conor4Real’s chef.

Timberlake wasn’t the only one to contribute a cameo, with the cast list a who’s who of SNL vets including Tim Meadows, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, and Sarah Silverman, plus music royalty like Mariah Carey, Michael Bolton, Arcade Fire, Katy Perry, 50 Cent and tons more. With songs from the soundtrack, including “I’m So Humble” with Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, going viral before the movie even came out, everyone expected a hit. Yet, when Universal released the film in June 2016, it landed with a thud. Online critics (including us at JoBlo) loved it, but the moviegoing public ignored it, with the film only grossing an anemic $9.6 million domestically. According to Box Office Mojo, it only made something like $40k internationally, meaning it likely went direct to VOD in most places. Ouch.

Yet, years later, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping has become a legit cult film and a fave of everyone who enjoys an excellent absurdist comedy. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, we examine how Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping got made, flopped, and became a cult favourite.

First Stop Health Celebrates One Year of Virtual Primary Care

First Stop Health Celebrates One Year of Virtual Primary Care
Virtual care company is proud to support members nationwide with preventive, chronic, mental health and urgent care needs and achieves a +95 Net Promoter Score among patients using Virtual Primary Care.

First Stop Health (FSH), a leading virtual care company for primary, urgent and mental health care needs, is proud to celebrate one year of providing exceptional Virtual Primary Care to members. Virtual Primary Care connects patients to primary care doctors who are part of the FSH virtual practice and can provide care for preventive, chronic and mental health concerns. Members also have access to FSH's Virtual Urgent Care (Telemedicine) through Virtual Primary Care.

"The potential impact of primary care has long been realized, but patients have to actually use the service for their lives to be transformed," said Teira Gunlock, CEO of FSH. "We built Virtual Primary Care in response to patient need, but just as importantly, we designed this service with high engagement and user experience as the priorities."

FSH Virtual Primary Care connects members to doctors in less than five days (on average and based on first-preferred appointment), with many appointments available next day. Virtual Primary Care members can schedule virtual visits via app, website or phone. FSH doctors are available to support patients by coordinating care for labs, imaging and procedure orders, managing medications, supporting disease management, referring patients to in-network specialists and providing care follow-up. Plus, virtual visits with FSH doctors are free to patients and their dependents. As a standalone solution, Virtual Primary Care visits do not incur medical claims — saving money for employers and their employees.

This past year, FSH Virtual Primary Care averaged 96% perfect 5-star ratings. Top conditions treated included anxiety, depression, hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity and type 2 diabetes. Many members also used FSH Virtual Primary Care to complete their annual wellness exams. Fifty percent of Virtual Primary Care patients were new to primary care, signaling that FSH is changing how patients think about engaging with their health. When asked to share what motivated them to use FSH Virtual Primary Care, 42% of members shared it was due to convenience, 23% said employer incentive/prompting and 12% were looking for support for a health issue. Ninety-four percent of Virtual Primary Care users plan to use it again and 96% would recommend FSH to a friend or colleague.

Members also revealed that compared to in-person care, Virtual Primary Care was easier, quicker and almost the same as or better than in-person experiences. A recent study found that virtual care performed comparably or better than in-person care in 82% of the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) quality measures studied. Patients who used virtual care experienced better chronic disease management and prevention and they were also more likely to receive a mental health screening. This evidence highlights a positive association of primary care delivered in a virtual setting and supports the importance of a strong primary care provider and patient relationship.

FSH recently enhanced its Virtual Primary Care steerage capabilities through its partnership with a premier transparency partner. To improve member care coordination, the FSH Care Team can now leverage 13 billion points of claims data for better in-network referrals based on cost and quality. For each provider recommendation delivered through FSH Virtual Primary Care, an average of $441 is saved in claims-based costs and cases are 26% less costly.

About First Stop Health

First Stop Health (FSH) provides care that people love® with various digital healthcare services. Patients can access virtual care 24/7 via app, website or phone. We help them save time and money with safe, convenient, high-quality virtual care solutions — Primary Care, Urgent Care & Mental Health. FSH was named one of Inc. Get Well Unveils Emergency Department & Inpatient Care Engagement Solution, Launches at Palomar Health
New solution leverages Get Well's mobile experience to unlock patient reach, engagement, and loyalty

Get Well

Get Well provides enterprise digital patient experience and navigation solutions for hospitals and communities around the world.

Get Well, the global leader in digital patient engagement, today unveiled its Emergency Department & Inpatient Care Engagement Solution, which has been launched in partnership with emergency department leaders at Palomar Health in San Diego: California's largest healthcare district.

Today, 65 percent of hospital admissions come through the emergency department and the median length of stay is 246 minutes according to the Emergency Department Benchmarking Alliance. As emergency departments continue to face overcrowding and longer boarding times, hospitals are faced with patient communication and overall experience challenges. Further, the proliferation of point solutions across different settings confuses patients and frustrates overburdened care teams while creating a fragmented digital experience.

The new Get Well Emergency Department & Inpatient Care Engagement Solution provides digital patient activation, triage, education, entertainment, discharge care transitions, and monitoring for hospital settings. Key features include:

  • An end-to-end mobile-first patient experience including personalized welcome information, care team details, symptom monitoring and real-time feedback
  • AI-driven SMS texting
  • Consumer-grade self-service including relaxation and entertainment
  • Patient education via health videos and medication library
  • Wait time functionality and notification

"Emergency department patient volumes are high at Palomar Health, causing patient throughput and communication challenges. Get Well's new Emergency Department & Inpatient Care Engagement Solution directly addresses expectation setting and overall mobile patient experience," said Tracy Page, District Director of Emergency Services at Palomar Health. "The Get Well platform enables rapid innovation by leveraging existing interfaces, content and capabilities such as bi-directional texting, and helps us avoid the need for more point solutions for patient engagement."

Palomar Health launched the Get Well Emergency Department & Inpatient Care Engagement Solution in Fall 2022. To date, overall mobile patient activation following the launch has increased 3X and Palomar Health plans to continue partnering with Get Well as the company releases further updates to its Emergency Department & Inpatient Care Engagement Solution.

"Leading health systems have made it clear that they want a comprehensive platform versus point solutions, especially when touching patients directly," said Todd Strickler, Get Well Senior Vice President of Product Management. "Our new Emergency Department & Inpatient Care Engagement Solution builds upon the proven success of our Get Well platform, enabling our teams to drive rapid innovation and efficiently meet the needs of healthcare organizations today - not down the road. Platforms matter."

Subsequent integrations of the Get Well platform will include an inpatient experience feature. This phase will offer patients a mobile experience, post-discharge support and an on-site Get Well Navigator to help improve the patient experience and workflow automation for all Palomar Health staff. This Navigator is one of the many ways Palomar Health is reimagining healthcare by removing the fear out of it and providing extraordinary patient experiences.

Red Rooms, Stay Online among Fantasia Film Festival Awards winners

Red Rooms, Stay Online among Fantasia Film Festival Awards winners

The list of Fantasia Film Festival Awards winners includes Red Rooms, Stay Online, Femme, and the Adams family

The Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal is more than halfway through its 27th edition, which is running from July 20th through August 9th – and over the weekend they unveiled their list of Fantasia Film Festival Awards winners, with major honors going to the likes of Red Rooms and Stay Online.

Our own reviewer Tyler Nichols gave Red Rooms a 9/10 “amazing” review (you can read it HERE), so it makes sense to hear that the film racked up multiple awards, including Best Feature, Best Screenplay for Pascal Plante, Best Score for Dominique Plante, and Outstanding Performance for Juliette Gariépy. We haven’t had the chance to see Stay Online yet, but that movie did earn the Best First Feature award for director Yeva Strelnikova.

Red Rooms is about what happens when the case of a serial killer who streamed his murders in the “red rooms” of the Dark Web goes to trial, and Kelly-Anne (Gariépy) becomes obsessed. She goes down a dark path to obtain the final piece of the case’s puzzle.

Stay Online is a Screenlife film that begins when a young woman volunteering in Kyiv is given one of the thousands of laptops donated by ordinary Ukrainians to support the war effort. She’s asked to install a sensitive military application and deliver the laptop to her brother serving on the frontline. But the woman receives a mysterious video call from a young boy searching for his father, the laptop’s previous owner, who went missing during the Russian army’s brutal massacre of innocent civilians in Bucha. Reluctantly, she agrees to help find his missing parents — a decision that will ultimately force her to risk the lives of her own loved ones.

The Best Director award went to Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping, whose film Femme centers on drag artist Jules (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett), who sees his closeted assailant (George Mackay) at a gay sauna and begins dating him, hatching a plan for revenge. Stewart-Jarrett also won the Outstanding Performance award.
