The Woman Under the Stage trailer: ITN Studios to release horror film about a cursed play

A trailer has been unveiled for The Woman Under the Stage, a horror film about a cursed play. Coming from ITN Studios

ITN Studios, the company that sent Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey out into the world earlier this year, has picked up the distribution rights to the horror film The Woman Under the Stage, and while they haven’t announced a release date for the movie yet, they have unveiled a trailer for it. Dread Central recently got the exclusive first look at the trailer, but now you can check it out in the embed above.

Directed by Ezekiel Decker, who also crafted the screenplay with Logan Rinaldi, The Woman Under the Stage has the following synopsis: A young woman comes to discover just how far she will go to achieve immortality while receiving the role of a lifetime in a mysterious stage play said to be cursed.

The film stars Jessica Dawn Willis (Silhouette), Matthew Tompkins (Sicario), Phil Harrison (12 Mighty Orphans), April Hartman (On Becoming a God in Central Florida), Robert Gemaehlich (Tokyo Ghoul: re), Ashley Spicer (Blood Reunion 3: Hunters), Natali Jones (Dead Awake), Jonathan Lamar Egbuna (Area 57: Project 24), Charles Leon (Space Marines), Andrew Neve (Dancing With Myself), John Frederick (Greyhound), Cole McKeel (Homo Erectus), Beau McKeel (Grand Prix: The Winning Tale), and newcomers Carlos Cortez, Annette Cummins, and Claire Robinson.

The Woman Under the Stage was produced by Mitch McLeod, who made an impressive drama called Silhouette on a budget of $25,000. Decker had a slightly larger budget to work with on this film. Stuart Alson and Nicole Holland served as executive producers, with John Frederick, Pamela Leak, and Marc Rouse co-executive producing. Matthew Roy and Matthew Tompkins were associate producers.

This is the second feature for Decker, whose feature directorial debut was the 2019 drama / adventure / mystery Dancing With Myself. I haven’t seen that one, but I really liked Silhouette, so I’m interested in checking out The Woman Under the Stage – and I also thought it looked pretty good, based on the trailer.

What did you think of the trailer for The Woman Under the Stage? Does this look like a movie you would be interested in watching? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Secret Invasion: Artists are shaming Marvel for using AI to create the show’s opening credits

Secret Invasion: Artists are shaming Marvel for using AI to create the show’s opening credits

Artists slam Marvel for using AI to create the opening credits sequence for its new Disney+ series Secret Invasion.

As creative forces behind the world’s entertainment fight for change in the film and television industry, some artists think Marvel is pouring salt on open wounds by using AI to create the opening credits sequence for its new Disney+ series Secret Invasion. The series debuted to rave reviews last night. Still, artists who make their living by creating visual spectacles say Marvel’s use of AI to start the show’s opening credits is a slap to the face, especially during a time of extreme unrest.

In the Secret Invasion opening credits, the AI creates a painterly art style that continuously morphs as the names of cast and crew members appear on the screen. The look reflects the shapeshifting nature of the Skrulls, a menacing alien race that’s presumably been infiltrating the MCU for years. The smearing watercolor motif is stylish. However, knowing AI created the sequence instead of human hands is ruffling feathers throughout the industry.

AI art is a hot topic in Hollywood, with artists saying they’re concerned about the computer-generated workaround replacing them on projects large and small. Concerns related to AI art include artists having their styles stolen and recreated without permission. An artist can see their signature look repurposed without consent or compensation. As we delve deeper into the hellscape of AI, more companies have begun using this creative method as a workaround for paying artists and cutting production time.

While the outcry against Marvel’s use of AI for Secret Invasion isn’t universal, it poses many questions about entertainment’s future and an artist’s place in the creative process. AI enthusiasts like Kaitlyn “Amouranth” Siragusa, who uses AI to build a chatbot version of herself online, says Marvel’s use of AI is the start of an exciting era in entertainment. “It felt explorative and inevitable, and exciting, and different,” Kaitlyn told Polygon in a recent interview.

What do you think about Marvel’s use of AI to create the opening credits sequence for Secret Invasion? Is Marvel adding insult to injury for people marching with the WGA strikers? Is this style of creating the start of a slippery slope? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Society of the Snow: J.A. Bayona directing survival thriller based on the same story as Alive

J.A. Bayona has made a survival thriller called Society of the Snow, based on the 1972 crash of the Uruguayan rugby team in the Andes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBI4pewVEVc

Director J.A. Bayona – whose credits include The Orphanage, The Impossible, A Monster Calls, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – has set up a Spanish-language thriller at the Netflix streaming service. Titled Society of the Snow, or La sociedad de la nieve, the film is an adaptation of the non-fiction book of the same name, written by Pablo Vierci. The film is about the Uruguayan rugby team which, en route to Chile in 1972, crash-landed on a glacier in the heart of the Andes. The survivors were forced to resort to extreme measures in order to stay alive.

That is the same real-life event that director Frank Marshall brought to the screen with the 1993 film Alive, which was based on Piers Paul Read’s book Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors.

Bayona wrote the screenplay for Society of the Snow with Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques, and Nicolás Casariego. The Hollywood Reporter notes that filming took place last year in Spain, Uruguay, and Chile, “including on location in the El Valle de las Lágrimas, where the real crash occurred.”

The cast includes Enzo Vogrincic Roldán, Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella, Tomas Wolf, Diego Ariel Vegezzi, Esteban Kukuriczka, Francisco Romero, Rafael Federman, Felipe González Otaño, Agustín Della Corte, Valentino Alonso, Simón Hempe, Fernando Contigiani García, Benjamín Segura, and Jerónimo Bosia.

Michael Giacchino is composing the score for Society of the Snow. Bayona told The Hollywood Reporter that Giacchino is a chameleon-like composer with “an extraordinary talent that allows him to shine in very different projects. I’m really excited that Society of the Snow is his first project in Spain and in Spanish. His very personal and elegant sensibility and his enormous skills to narrate through music are a joy for any director. His music for the film brings a special voice and energy that turns the Andes odyssey into an even more relevant, encouraging and universal story, if possible.

Netflix has not yet revealed when they will be releasing Society of the Snow. Does this project sound interesting to you? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Preparation, Prevention and Personal Safety Are Key to Staying Healthy During Busy Summer Travel Season

Preparation, Prevention and Personal Safety Are Key to Staying Healthy During Busy Summer Travel Season
Physician expert offers practical travel tips for people traveling in U.S. and abroad

As millions of Americans hit the road for what is expected to be the busiest summer travel season yet, a member of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) advises travelers to pack a healthy dose of common sense measures to prepare for and prevent common health issues that arise during travel.

Shirley L. Sharp, DO, MS, FACOFP, a board-certified physician in family and emergency medicine and faculty member at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, presented a session on travel preparation at the ACOFP's recent annual convention.

"Summer vacations are meant to be fun, so no one wants to be sidelined from things like altitude sickness, sunburn, or traveler's diarrhea from drinking unpurified water or questionable food prep hygiene," said Dr. Sharp. "Travelers should be mindful of the area they are visiting and consult their primary care physician to discuss any vaccinations they might need if traveling abroad, as well as a plan for medical care particularly if they have chronic, high-risk medical conditions."

If you are traveling this summer, Dr. Sharp recommends you:

  • Consider altitude. If traveling to a high-altitude destination, such as Colorado or Utah, it is important to discuss your trip with your primary care physician. The prescription medication acetazolamide can help people tolerate travel to high altitudes, but patients need to be evaluated by their physician prior to travel to determine if it is an appropriate and needed medication. In general, a slow ascent is recommended, and Dr. Sharp suggests sleeping at a lower altitude upon arrival and slowly ascending over a couple of days. The most common symptoms of altitude sickness are headache, nausea, or fatigue. If you have trouble breathing or any worsening symptoms such as visual changes or confusion, Dr. Sharp says the fastest - and main - treatment is descent.
  • Pack sunscreen and mosquito protection. Exposed skin can lead to painful sunburns and increase the incidence of mosquito or tick bites, which can cause Lyme disease and babesiosis. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher, and cool, breathable polyester long-sleeved shirts and pants should be worn to protect from insects and ticks. DEET mosquito repellents and nets are also useful, especially when hiking in areas where ticks are present - particularly in the Northeast, Southeast, and increasingly in the Midwest due to changing weather patterns. You should discuss special considerations for protecting young children from sun exposure and insects/ticks with your family physician or pediatrician.
  • Mask up to protect from wildfires. As so many areas of the country are experiencing poor indoor air quality this summer, Dr. Sharp advises travelers to bring an N95 mask to protect their lungs from the smoke from wildfires blanketing the country.
  • Take red tide precautions. Toxic red tides in Florida and some parts of the gulf coast of Texas are forecasted this year, which can lead to respiratory issues in patients with asthma and cause significant skin and eye irritation. Dr. Sharp also warned that eating shellfish from these areas can potentially cause shellfish poisoning, characterized by abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, numbness to extremities, muscle aches, headaches, and vertigo.
  • Hydrate, but consider your water's source. While staying hydrated is very important to prevent dehydration and heat stroke in warm temperatures, it's equally important to make sure your drinking water is free from parasites, bacteria and viruses if bottled water is not available. Dr. Sharp recommends that if you plan to drink stream water while camping or hiking, make sure the water is boiled as it will kill most organisms that can cause traveler's diarrhea. If boiling water is not possible, several companies sell portable filters, but Dr. Sharp advised making sure it is certified for "cysts and oocyst" reduction in the care of parasites.
  • Get back to basics. Make sure that you pack basic necessities, such as any prescription medications you take regularly. If you do, be sure to bring enough for the trip plus a few days extra in case you encounter travel delays. Also, pack any over-the-counter medications you may need (i.e., acetaminophen, cold or allergy medicines, etc.,). Anti-itch ointments, band-aids, and hand sanitizer are also good travel essentials. Dr. Sharp also added that home remedies include aloe vera gel which works well for sunburn, ice packs that help with itching from bug bites, baking soda to use on unbroken skin over bites, and calamine lotion for mosquito bites.
  • Be mindful of personal safety. Regardless of where you travel in the U.S. or abroad, be mindful of your surroundings and consider personal safety when planning travel. Travelers should consult the U.S. Department of State website for travel advisories about dangers in other countries.
  • Understand international traveling requirements. For some geographical areas, there are required vaccines that are needed before entering the country. These vaccines are very country dependent but are largely required in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Central and South America - primarily to prevent yellow fever and malaria, which could be potentially life-threatening. Dr. Sharp advises patients with chronic conditions to discuss their international travel plans with their primary care physician for vaccination advice, as well as recommendations on best practices and care for their medical issues while abroad.

"As a doctor of osteopathic medicine, I always encourage my patients to think about their health from an overall wellness, preventative standpoint, and preparing for common health issues that could arise while traveling is no different," said Dr. Sharp. "Travelers should always consider the overall health of everyone in their party, with particular consideration for young children, who may have different guidelines when using certain products like sunscreen or mosquito repellents. Your primary care physician is a great resource for any medical-related travel questions and can help you prepare for common ailments and prevent them as much as possible."

About the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians

Founded in 1950, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) is a community of 25,000 physicians, residents, and students that champions osteopathic principles and supports its members by providing resources such as education, networking, and advocacy, while putting patients first. ACOFP empowers its members with education and resources that allow them to adapt to new models of care and quickly changing government policy. For more information, visit www.acofp.org

The Passenger: Kyle Gallner stars in Blumhouse thriller with August release date

The Passenger, a dramatic thriller produced by Blumhouse and starring Kyle Gallner, has secured an August release date

About fifteen months ago, we heard that genre regular Kyle Gallner – whose credits include Red, The Haunting in Connecticut, Jennifer’s Body, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Red State, The Walking Dead, The Cleanse, Alien Code, Ghosts of War, Scream, and Smile, among others – had signed on to star in the dramatic thriller The Passenger for Blumhouse Television and MGM+. Now it has been announced that Paramount Home Entertainment is planning to give the film a digital and VOD release on August 4th, with an MGM+ release to follow later in the year.

The film is part of the Blumhouse Television and MGM+ deal to produce eight original films together. A House on the Bayou, American Refugee, Torn Hearts, Unhuman, The Visitor, There’s Something Wrong the Children, and Unseen were also part of this deal.

Directed by Carter Smith (The Ruins) from a screenplay by Jack Stanley, who has had multiple scripts featured on the Black List, The Passenger follows the journey two flawed, complex characters embark on after a sudden life altering event leads them to confront the troubles in their past to right the wrongs in their lives before time runs out. Randy is perfectly content fading into the background. But when his coworker Benson goes on a sudden and violent rampage leaving a trail of destruction in his wake, Randy is forced to face his fears and confront his troubled past in order to survive.

Gallner plays Benson and is joined in the cast by Johnny Berchtold (Snow Falls) and Liza Weil (Gilmore Girls). Berchtold plays Randy.

The Passenger was executive produced by Jason Blum, Chris McCumber, Jeremy Gold, and Lauren Downey.

Since making his feature directorial debut with The Ruins in 2008, Smith has directed Jamie Marks Is Dead, the Midnight Kiss entry in Blumhouse’s Hulu series Into the Dark, and Swallowed.

Does The Passenger sound like something you would like to watch this August? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

I’m a fan of several of the people involved with the movie and enjoy watching these Blumhouse series (in addition to Into the Dark on Hulu, they also produced a series of films for Amazon under the Welcome to the Blumhouse banner), so I will definitely be watching The Passenger.
