The University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC) Announces CEO Transition
Joe Landsman to retire after 25 years; Dr. Keith Gray to succeed

The board of directors of The University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC) has selected Dr. Keith Gray as president and chief executive officer, effective April 1, 2024. Dr. Gray succeeds Joseph "Joe" Landsman, Jr., who today announced his retirement after 25 years with the system.

Effective July 1, Dr. Gray will become president of UTMC with Mr. Landsman serving as CEO. When Mr. Landsman retires on April 1, 2024, Dr. Gray will become president and CEO.

In connection with the transition, Dr. James Shamiyeh, who currently serves as Executive Vice President of Clinical Operations, will become the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. He will act as second in command to Dr. Gray, retain all existing responsibilities and add oversight of the physician enterprise to continue enhancing greater continuity of care.

"It has been the privilege of my career to lead UTMC's growth from a $265M to a $1.4B academic health system, extending high-quality care to more East Tennesseans," said Landsman. "I could not be prouder of the contributions the 8,000 committed physicians and team members of UTMC have made to the East Tennessee community during what will be nearly 20 years as CEO, particularly through the pandemic. Together, we have advanced our mission to serve others through healing, education, and discovery."

He continued, "I am extraordinarily pleased that Dr. Keith Gray has been chosen as my successor. His visionary thinking and problem-solving abilities have been central to UTMC's growth thus far and make him a natural choice to lead us going forward."

Landsman came to UTMC in 1999 as Chief Financial Officer and was promoted to president and CEO in 2005. Prior to that, Landsman was the Executive Vice President of Zale Lipshy University Hospital in Dallas, Texas, where he also served as its Chief Financial Officer from 1995 to 1997. Landsman serves on the Board of Directors for the Tennessee Hospital Association and served as its Chair from 2012 to 2013.

"On behalf of the board of directors, I would like to thank Joe for his 25 years of dedicated leadership, 20 years of which will have been in his CEO role," said Renda Burkhart, Board Chair. "It is hard to overstate the impact of his influence, advocacy, and service on the UTMC and Knoxville communities. We fully expect his legacy of trust, transparency, and partnership to live on in our organizational culture and are fortunate that he will continue as CEO until April 1, 2024, to ensure a seamless transition."

Burkhart continued, "After careful deliberation, the board has unanimously agreed that Dr. Keith Gray is the right person to lead UTMC into its next chapter. His vision for what UTMC can become, his experience as both a physician and an administrator, his deep knowledge of our organization and the Knoxville community and his proven performance over 16 years at the system will make him a highly effective president and CEO."

"I'm honored to have been chosen by the board to build on the foundation Joe and others have laid and am grateful to my family, colleagues, and mentors who have supported my journey," said Dr. Gray. "The next phase for UTMC will include working together to expand clinical services, strengthen educational programs and make new discoveries that provide access to affordable care for more East Tennesseans."

Dr. Gray's and Dr. Shamiyeh's appointments reflect UTMC's commitment to physician leadership at the highest levels of the system.

Dr. Gray joined UTMC in 2007 as a surgical oncologist. Past roles have included Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology, Chief-of-Staff, medical director of multiple service lines, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer and his current role, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Gray also co-founded the Physician Leadership Academy, of which he is a graduate.

After completing his undergraduate and medical degrees at Wake Forest University, Dr. Gray did a general surgery residency and surgical research fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and a surgical oncology fellowship at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. He completed a Master's in Business Administration from the Haslam College of Business in 2014.

Dr. Gray has been perennially recognized as one of the "Top Docs" by Knoxville's Cityview Magazine and received awards recognizing his outstanding patient care, compassion, and leadership. In the community, he is the board chair of the Emerald Youth Foundation and a trustee on the United Way of Greater Knoxville Board.

Dr. Shamiyeh joined UTMC in 2005 as a pulmonary and critical care physician before becoming the medical director of the Heart Lung Vascular Institute in 2016. In 2019, he was named Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer before promotion to his current role as Executive Vice President of Clinical Services in 2022. Dr. Shamiyeh currently oversees the Centers of Excellence, Nursing, Pharmacy, Clinical Services, Hospitalist Services, Perioperative Services, Emergency Services, Clinical Integration, Clinical Process Design, and the Operations Center.

Dr. Shamiyeh led UTMC's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He earned an undergraduate degree from Georgia Tech, a medical degree from The University of Tennessee College of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency and pulmonary/critical care fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital. Dr. Shamiyeh holds a Master of Science in Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master of Business Administration from the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee Knoxville.

Whittier Program Closes the Life Expectancy Gap in Minority and Low-Income Communities

Whittier Program Closes the Life Expectancy Gap in Minority and Low-Income Communities

In 2011, Whittier Street Health Center raised awareness about the 33-year gap in life expectancy for those living in Roxbury (59.5 years) compared to those living in the Back Bay (92 years), a gentrified neighborhood less than 2 miles from Roxbury. Whittier focused on the "Tale of the Two Cities" and partnered with its patients, community residents and leaders, corporations and public sector partners to raise awareness and to develop programs to close the life expectancy gap. Whittier launched its Boston Health Equity Program in 2012, a system of care for people with chronic illnesses and those at risk that fully integrates innovative community outreach, linkage to social services, wellness support and care coordination with a focus on eliminating health disparities and their associated costs.

A little over a decade later, working with its patients and partners, Whittier has made large strides in improving life expectancy in its service areas by 10 years. The Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) released a report on May 11, 2023, and there is a 23-year life expectancy gap between residents in Roxbury and the Back Bay.

On June 21, 2023, Whittier Street Health Center co-hosted a session in partnership with the Boston Public Health Commission and the CHNA-CHIP Collaborative.

The open discussion, led by the Commissioner of the City of Boston's Health Department Dr. Bisola Ojikutu and Whittier's President & CEO Frederica M. Williams, addressed the need for continued and expanded community outreach and education to provide the necessary and comprehensive range of treatment and prevention services to low-income minority and immigrant populations.

Community members attending the event were connected to health resources offered by the City of Boston, including the Boston Health Start Initiative (BHSI), which provides direct support to pregnant and parenting women, children, and families of color. Whittier Street Health Center is a designated BHSI site.

"The recent Health of Boston reports shows that the life expectancy gap of Roxbury residents has shown a slight improvement, but there remains a gap of 23 years when compared to the residents in Back Bay," said Frederica M. Williams, president and CEO of Whittier Street Health Center. "We need to continue our efforts to address the barriers to good health, such as housing, food and economic insecurity while empowering our residents to engage in lifestyle changes and behaviors that will improve their health and quality of life. Having access to prevention, screening and treatment in addition to community investments in the social determinants of health can lead to better health outcomes. We are grateful to all who have supported our Boston Health Equity Program, which was launched in 2012, and look forward to expanding our health equity partnerships so we can continue to close the 23-year life expectancy gap."

Hulu is returning to the Swiss Alps with Nicole Kidman for Nine Perfect Strangers Season 2, starring a new cast of unsuspecting clients.

Based on Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty’s book, Nine Perfect Strangers hails from David E. Trap: M. Night Shyamalan reveals the setting of his next thriller

Writer/director M. Night Shyamalan has revealed the setting of his next psychological thriller, which is titled Trap

Last October, Universal announced that they would be releasing the next thriller from writer/director M. Night Shyamalan on April 5, 2024… but in February, Shyamalan secured a multi-year deal with Warner Bros. So the plan has changed. The filmmaker will now be making his next thriller, titled Trap, for Warner Bros., who have not yet announced a release date for the project. But during the Warner Bros. presentation at CineEurope in Barcelona, Shyamalan did reveal the setting of Trap.

According to Deadline, Shyamalan told CineEurope attendees that the film will be a “psychological thriller set at a concert“. He didn’t reveal anything else about the story.

He did say he’s excited to have joined the Warner Bros. family. His daughter Ishana is making her feature directorial debut with the gothic fairy tale The Watchers, and that film is set up at Warner Bros. as well. It has a June 7, 2024 theatrical release date.

Recently, the elder Shyamalan told Collider that he already knows what his next three movies are going to be, with Trap being the first of the three. He said, “I have three movie ideas. I even have the structure of all three to some extent. And so it’s a very weird and interesting situation I’m feeling. I wish I could tell them faster. I wish I could get there faster, but there is no shortcut. I have to spend the six to nine months to write it. I have to storyboard for three months, and then we have pre-production, and then shooting it, and edit for as long as I can get every single second.” When asked if it might take six years for him to get all three movies out into the world, he said he’s hoping to move faster than that.

The next two films remain total mysteries, but now we know that Trap is set at a concert. So does a Shyamalan thriller set at a concert sound interesting to you? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

I have watched every M. Night Shyamalan thriller up to this point, so I’ll definitely be watching this one as well.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse crosses $500 million worldwide box office

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse crosses 0 million worldwide box office

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse crossed $500 million at the worldwide box office despite competition from Transformers, The Flash & more.

While The Flash may be struggling to find its footing at the box office, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is having no such issue. Sony’s animated sequel has now crossed $500 million at the worldwide box office, with $290.5 million domestically and $215.9 million internationally. Way to go, Spidey.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is also miles ahead of the first movie, which took in $384 worldwide, a number the sequel crossed in just 12 days. Across the Spider-Verse obviously still has legs at the box office, despite competition from Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Elemental, and The Flash.

When Miles Morales is unexpectedly approached by his best friend and love interest Gwen Stacy to complete a mission to save every universe of Spider-People from a mysterious new villain who could cause a catastrophic disaster, Miles is up for the challenge,” reads the official synopsis for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. “He and Gwen journey through the Multiverse together and meet its protectors, a group of Spider-People known as the Spider-Force. However, Miles finds himself at odds with the Spider-Force on how to handle the threat.Across the Spider-Verse features the voices of Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, Daniel Kaluuya, and Oscar Isaac. The film was directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a script by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham.

Our own Chris Bumbray loved the sequel, saying that it was “beyond anything I could have hoped for.” His only caveat is that “despite a two-hour and twenty-minute running time, we’re only getting half the story, with Beyond the Spider-Verse due for release next year. Yet, it’s an entirely engrossing animated epic that proves, as its predecessor did, that imagination is the only limitation for these films.” Bumbray added that the movie is “one heck of a ride, with gorgeous visuals and an expertly crafted soundtrack that includes, for my money, the year’s best score (so far) by the great Daniel Pemberton. Indeed, superhero movies are on the verge of a major re-invention between this and The Flash. It’ll be interesting to see if the proper MCU can keep up, as both of these movies, which come out within mere weeks of each other, change the game.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters, so be sure to check out the rest of the review from Chris Bumbray as well as let us know what you thought of the film. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is still slated for a March 29, 2024 release, but many suspect that the film will be delayed.
