Genetic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Consortium (GCAC) is Proud to Support Global Heart Hub in Their Second Annual Cardiomyopathy Awareness Week

The Genetic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Consortium (GCAC) is excited to partner with Global Heart Hub to support the second annual Cardiomyopathy Awareness Week, taking place June 26 - July 2, 2023. This year's Cardiomyopathy Awareness Week focuses on the major role that genetics plays in cardiomyopathy to encourage more individuals to be genetically tested and learn more about this disease.

"Global Heart Hub is delighted to have the opportunity to partner with GCAC to bring their campaign to our affiliate associations in 10 languages, across 31 countries," says Neil Johnson, Executive Director of Global Heart Hub. "It's such an important initiative for families to help raise awareness, encourage people to get genetic testing, and potentially help save the lives of their loved ones."

Throughout the week, GCAC and Global Heart Hub, along with many partners and supporters, will be sharing informational flyers, social media posts, webinars, and more - all with the goal of educating the public.

"GCAC, a U.S.-based initiative launched in early March, was founded with the goal of increasing genetic testing for genetic cardiomyopathy patients," says Greg Ruf, Executive Director of DCM Foundation, the founding partner of GCAC. "This week is one of our best campaigns and opportunities to get patients and their families engaged and aware of what a diagnosis means and to encourage open dialogue. We're honored to partner with Global Heart Hub and share our content with them for distribution on an international level."

Dust Bunny: Mads Mikkelsen and Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller are in production on horror film

Dust Bunny: Mads Mikkelsen and Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller are in production on horror film

Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller and star Mads Mikkelsen are now in production on the horror movie Dust Bunny, co-starring Sigourney Weaver

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-YoZ_x6drY

Last November, it was announced that Hannibal TV series creator Bryan Fuller would be re-teaming with Hannibal himself, Mads Mikkelsen, for a family-oriented horror project Dust Bunny. Soon after, we learned that Fuller was also working on a Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake for franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service. And while Crystal Lake is currently at a standstill because of the writers strike, the strike hasn’t had any effect on Dust Bunny. Fuller shared a picture of himself and Mikkelsen to celebrate the fact that they’re “back in the saddle” together. You can take a look at the image in the embed at the bottom of this article.

Dust Bunny is currently filming in Budapest, with Fuller directing from his own screenplay. It hasn’t been announced in the trades, but earlier this month Sigourney Weaver told New York Social Diary that she’s in the cast as well. She said, “I’m about to go off to Budapest to do a wonderful small movie called Dust Bunny. I play another person who’s not so nice, opposite Mads Mikkelsen, the brilliant Danish actor (Casino Royale), with a really talented writer/director, Bryan Fuller (Hannibal). And I have really beautiful costumes!

Fuller is also producing the film with Entertainment One and Thunder Road‘s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee. Said to be “a throwback to the family horror films of the ’80s”, Dust Bunny tells the story of an eight-year-old girl who recruits her strange neighbor to hunt and kill the monster living under her bed. The girl says the monster ate her family, and she wants revenge.

Does Dust Bunny sound interesting to you, and are you glad to see Bryan Fuller and Mads Mikkelsen working together again (with Sigourney Weaver in the mix as well)? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

I’m definitely interested in seeing a throwback to the family horror movies of the ’80s, especially with these names involved. I look forward to seeing how Dust Bunny is going to turn out.

Here’s Fuller and Mikkelsen, reunited:

Awfully Good Movies: Supergirl (1984)

Awfully Good Movies: Supergirl (1984)

Before Kara Zor-El met THE FLASH, she faced off against a witchy Faye Dunaway in her failed 1984 screen debut… SUPERGIRL!

Now that The Flash has hit theaters to reset the DC Universe, Awfully Good Movies is running back in time to watch the debut film for one of The Flash’s breakout characters, Helen Slater in 1984’s SUPERGIRL!

In between the disappointment of Superman III and the catastrophe of Superman IV, original franchise producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind decided to switch focus from the Man of Steel to his female cousin Kara Zor-El with an in-universe spinoff that’d have a cameo from Christopher Reeve himself to mentor his fellow Kryptonian and star Helen Slater in the young actress’ debut role. But after Reeve turned the film down before filming, and Warner Bros. grew so fed up with the Salkinds that they sold the distribution rights back to them, Supergirl would instead flop so hard at the box office that the Salkinds just gave up on the Superman film rights altogether, and it’s not hard to see why the Woman of Tomorrow failed here for reasons other than superpowered sexism.

From Slater’s flat lead performance that results from her badly written dialogue, to an incomprehensible plot about retrieving a magic power ball back for a visibly drunk Peter O’Toole before a visibly embarrassed Faye Dunaway uses it to magically take over the world, to special effects on Supergirl that look nearly as bad as her effects in The Flash, it’s no less of a disaster than pairing Superman up with Richard Pryor or nuclear powered musclemen. Still, Supergirl does deserve respect for being the first major female superhero in film history, even if the film itself doesn’t earn a single ounce of respect.

And hey, thank God this would be the last time that the names of Superman or Supergirl would ever be associated with a box office disappointment that suffered from the movie having subpar visual effects. Yep… nothing but cinematic quality from then on from DC… not a SINGLE problem!

The Walking Dead: Dead City had the biggest cable drama debut of the year

The Walking Dead: Dead City had the biggest cable drama debut of the year

The debut episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City drew in enough viewers to become the biggest cable drama premiere of the year

We’re about halfway done with 2023, and any cable drama premieres that come along in the second half of the year have a new viewership number to try to beat. The Hollywood Reporter shares the news that the Walking Dead spin-off The Walking Dead: Dead City (check out our review HERE) is now the biggest cable drama debut of the year, having drawn in 683,000 viewers as it aired on AMC last Sunday, with viewers of the simulcasts on BBC America and IFC, plus replays, boosting the number of viewers to 1.12 million. The Hollywood Reporter notes that “Dead City also became the top series premiere ever on the AMC+ streaming service, in both viewers and acquisition (i.e., people subscribing to watch a show), surpassing Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches (though as usual with streaming platforms, detailed viewing figures aren’t made public).”

Of course, 1.12 million is far below the number of viewers that used to tune in for The Walking Dead at its peak, but it’s about in line with the viewership of the final season’s episodes, and as The Hollywood Reporter points out, “The days of millions of viewers watching a cable series on-air the night it debuts — at least one not named (or related to) Yellowstone — are largely past, but Dead City does compare favorably to several recent AMC premieres. The series beat the same-day viewer tallies for the first episodes of Interview With the Vampire (622,000 viewers), Mayfair Witches (577,000) and Tales of the Walking Dead (572,000).”

Eli Jorné, who has been a writer and co-executive producer on The Walking Dead for multiple seasons, serves as showrunner on The Walking Dead: Dead City. This show sees Maggie and Negan traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror.

Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan have been playing Maggie and Negan since season 2 and 6 (respectively) of The Walking Dead. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Cohan was the first to reveal that The Walking Dead: Dead City picks up “a few years” after the conclusion of The Walking Dead.

Joining Cohan and Morgan in the cast are Mahina Napoleon (NCIS: Hawai’i), Zeljko Ivanek (Madam Secretary), and Jonathan Higginbotham (Shining Vale). Gaius Charles (Fright Night Lights) is playing Izaak, who is “confident, ruthless, and unyielding in the pursuit of what he believes is justice, with the force of his will and his menace. Izaak enjoys his work and intersperses humor with the terror he incites. This is a family man, devoted to building a safe world for his wife and daughters. His journey unearths a loss he is haunted by. He has patience and resilience and walks rather than runs from his mistakes.”

Cohan, Morgan, and Jorné are executive producing The Walking Dead: Dead City with Scott M. Gimple, the Chief Content Officer of the Walking Dead Universe.

25 French MPs and 4 Animal Welfare Associations Jointly Promote ‘International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats’

25 French MPs and 4 Animal Welfare Associations Jointly Promote ‘International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats’

Corinne Vignon

French MP Corinne Vignon (middle)

Recently, 25 members of the French National Assembly sent a joint open letter to President Emmanuel Macron, urging the promotion of legislation in France to ban the consumption of dogs and cats. They called for the signing of the "International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats" advocated by the World Dog Alliance, supporting the global movement to ban the eating of dogs and cats and collaborating with countries worldwide to put an end to the issue of dog and cat meat.

The joint letter was led by Member of Parliament Corinne Vignon. Corinne Vignon spent 10 years in Costa Rica managing an ecotourism complex and developing a national marine park, an experience that led her to commit to protecting animals. She then became involved in French politics at a local level. She was first elected as a Member of Parliament in June 2017, and was re-elected in June 2022. In December 2022, Corinne Vignon became the Head of the Animal Welfare Research Group of the National Assembly.

Thanks to her leadership and endorsement, the open letter gathered the support of heavyweight MPs, including former Minister Joël Giraud, as well as the four most influential animal welfare organizations in France. This collaboration between MPs and animal welfare organizations demonstrates a unified effort to address the issue at both the legislative and grassroots levels.

The joint efforts of the World Dog Alliance and local animal welfare organizations in France have yielded positive results. The recent joint letter signed by 25 French MPs reflects the growing recognition of the need to address the cruel practice of eating dogs and cats. The MPs are urging President Macron to take action by supporting the "International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats." This convention, proposed by the World Dog Alliance, aims to establish a global consensus on ending the consumption of these animals and collaborating with other countries to tackle the issue.

The involvement of influential MPs, such as Corinne Vignon and Joël Giraud, in this joint initiative adds weight to the cause. Corinne Vignon, in particular, has a strong track record of advocating for animal welfare and has previously supported bills to protect animals and strengthen sanctions against abusers. Her leadership and dedication make her a valuable ally for the World Dog Alliance in rallying support within the National Assembly.

The World Dog Alliance continues to work tirelessly to advance the cause of animal welfare and promote the ban on eating dogs and cats worldwide. With the support of passionate individuals, organizations, and lawmakers, progress is being made to end this practice and protect the lives of these vulnerable animals.

Within a span of less than six months, the anti-dog and cat meat movement in France has made significant strides. France has become the first country, post-pandemic, to successfully garner support through a joint letter signed by 25 MPs, representing various political parties. This achievement is remarkable in the history of animal welfare in France and reflects a consensus among political parties to drive the implementation of the "International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats."

While France is just one stop in the European campaign of the World Dog Alliance, activities in Germany and Norway are also progressing rapidly. As a leading country in the European Union, France's support will have a substantial impact on other EU member states, potentially creating a ripple effect and sparking a new wave of dog and cat meat bans across the continent.

The World Dog Alliance, in collaboration with its partners and supporters, will continue to work tirelessly to promote animal welfare, raise awareness about the issue of consuming dogs and cats, and advocate for the universal adoption of the "International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats." Together, we can strive for a world where the inhumane practice of consuming these beloved animals is eradicated.

James Mangold “flirted with the idea” of a Boba Fett movie before deciding to do Indiana Jones

James Mangold “flirted with the idea” of a Boba Fett movie before deciding to do Indiana Jones

The acclaimed director of Walk the Line and Logan nearly explored a spin-off of the famous bounty hunter before the Disney+ show.

Before The Book of Boba Fett came into existence, Lucasfilm had planned to release more Star Wars spin-offs following the likes of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story. The director of such popular films as Walk the Line and Logan, James Mangold, was looking to start his working relationship with Kathleen Kennedy and company. He would finally get his chance when he took up the directing position vacated by Steven Spielberg for a fifth entry in the Indiana Jones franchise, and now, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is just over the horizon.

However, Mangold had another project in mind before bringing back Harrison Ford for another archeology adventure. CBR.com reports that Mangold was looking to make a standalone feature film that centered around the popular Star Wars character, Boba Fett. It is not clear when this idea was being developed in relation to The Mandalorian‘s conception in the timeline, but according to Variety, Mangold “’more than flirted’ years earlier with making a Boba Fett movie that would have been a one-off spaghetti Western in the vein of Sergio Leone.” It is revealed that the idea would eventually evolve into the Disney+ series, The Book of Boba Fett.

Although Mangold had opted for Indiana Jones, during the production of Dial of Destiny, Kathleen Kennedy had inquired if he was still interested in exploring a story in the Star Wars universe. Now that Dial of Destiny is in the can, Mangold is now working on ideas for a prequel film tentatively titled Dawn of the Jedi. Mangold recalls when Kennedy asked him if he wanted to do a Star Wars film, “I said, ‘Yes, but it seems like everything you’re developing is continuing forward.’”

The idea for Dawn of the Jedi that Mangold is currently flirting with is “a ‘Ten Commandments’ about the dawning of the Force. It is basically, for fans, a kind of religion. What is it to have found this power and not even understand what it is?” Kennedy loved the pitch and pounced on the idea. She expressed her enthusiasm for working with Mangold again on this project. “Jim’s pretty fast — he’s already got the basic treatment laid out in his head. He has every intention of wanting to move this forward very aggressively, and we want to support that.” Kennedy alludes that once the strike of the WGA is settled and business continues, they will hit the ground running on the movie.

Sharksploitation documentary gets July release on Shudder

The documentary Sharksploitation, which covers the shark thriller sub-genre, reaches the Shudder streaming service in July

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zITrYbfxoWg

Almost two years have gone by since we heard that Stephen Scarlata, producer of the documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune, was working on a documentary called Sharksploitation, which will tell viewers all about the shark thriller sub-genre. Now we know when we’re finally get a chance to see that documentary. The Shudder streaming service has announced that they will be releasing Sharksploitation as a Shudder Original on July 21st! The movie will be streaming in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

Scarlata directed Sharksploitation and produced it with Kerry Deignan Roy and Josh Miller. The feature-length documentary will delve into the sub-genre of sharksploitation films, from Corman’s 1958 She Gods of Shark Reef to the release of Jaws and the subsequent knock-offs.

An alternative synopsis goes like this: In the wake of blockbuster classic Jaws, a new subgenre was born. This new documentary explores the weird, wild cinematic legacy of sharks on film and the world’s undying fascination.

Scarlata had this to say about the project: “The movie Jaws had a massive impact on me becoming a filmmaker, and it began my lifelong fascination with sharks. … I love these films, and with each one I watch, my love grows more vital for the species, and my heart breaks more over the horrors they go through in everyday life, from overfishing to shark finning. This documentary is the ultimate love letter to the shark movie genre, filmmakers who work hard to make these films, and to the misunderstood species themselves.

Sharksploitation includes interviews with Roger Corman (who recently produced the likes of Sharktopus and Dinoshark), Piranha director Joe Dante, Jaws 1-3 writer Carl Gottlieb, 47 Meters Down and 47 Meters Down: Uncaged director Johannes Roberts, and Jaws: The Revenge cast member Mario Van Peebles. Scarlata and his collaborators also secured an interview with marine and environmental conservation advocate Wendy Benchley, the widow of Jaws author Peter Benchley.

This documentary is a “must-watch” for me. Are you a fan of shark thrillers and will you be watching Sharksploitation when it reaches Shudder? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

No Hard Feelings Interview: Andrew Barth Feldman

No Hard Feelings Interview: Andrew Barth Feldman

We interview No Hard Feelings co-star Andrew Barth Feldman about working with Jennifer Lawrence on an R-rated comedy and more!

The age of raunchy comedies is back with No Hard Feelings which his theaters everywhere on June 23. This feature comedy Sees Maddie (played by Jennifer Lawrence) on the brink of losing her home, so she finds an intriguing job listing: helicopter parents looking for someone to bring their introverted 19-year-old son Percy out of his shell before college. She has one summer to make him a man or die trying.

Today on JoBlo, we go one on one with the Percy himself Andrew Barth Feldman as he talks about filming a raunchy comedy, working with Jennifer Lawrence, the musical number in the film, as well as the fun he had on set with everyone and more! To note, this was Feldman’s first major movie, and it was actually shot right around where he grew up, in Upstate New York. A self-admitted nerd in high school, one thing Feldman said he was happy the movie did was that it didn’t resort to stereotypes. In the movie, Percy, while shy, has a good heart, which makes the relationship that springs up between him and Jennifer Lawrence more palatable that you’d think given the raunchy premise. Yet, the movie doesn’t shy away from R-rated hijinks, which Feldman says Lawrence jumped into fearlessly.

You can expect our No Hard Feelings review soon, and the movie opens in theaters tomorrow.

Dumb Money red-band trailer: Paul Dano levels up in a retelling of the unbelievable GameStop stock meltdown

Sony’s Dumb Money red-band trailer finds Paul Dano as a stock market exchange Robin Hood, with GameStop executives as the bullseye.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6ieljQylRU

Excuse me while I put my feet up, burn one, and bask in the glow of executives getting screwed over by their own hubris. Why am I lounging? I just watched Sony’s trailer for Dumb Money, the Craig Gillespie-directed comedy-drama retelling the GameStop stock debacle that sent several fat cats to their financial ruin. The Dumb Money red-band trailer features Paul Dano as Keith Gill, the financial analyst who invested his life savings into a failing GameStop stock that eventually made him (and others) a millionaire. Gill’s story is a wild one, filled with twists and turns. Gillespie’s new film explores the YouTube sensation’s story, with both sides incurring blowback from a dangerous numbers game.

Pete Davidson, Vincent D’Onofrio, America Ferrera, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley, and Seth Rogen star alongside Dano in Sony’s Dumb Money red-band trailer. Gillespie directs from a script by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo based on the book The Antisocial Network by Ben Mezrich.

Presented as a David-vs.-Goliath story, Dumb Money investigates how a group of private investors and internet trolls on a Wall Street subreddit called WallStreetBets hoodwinked one of the most formidable hedge funds known to eager investors. The carefully orchestrated attack on the market sent shockwaves through money lenders’ lifeless souls, sewing chaos in an infrastructure that had worked for generations. As a result of the debacle, a handful of first-time traders got stupidly rich, while influential players in the market had their coffers emptied in a matter of moments.

Teddy Schwartzman and Gillespie produce, with Mezrich, Michael Heimler, John Friedberg, Johnny Holland, Schuker Blum, Andrew Swett, Angelo, Kevin Ulrich, and Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss executive producing.

I remember the seeds of chaos sewn in real-time when this unprecedented situation unfolded. I won’t pretend to understand the ins and outs of stock trading. However, I enjoy watching billionaires sweat. Sony’s Dumb Money red-band trailer brings Gill’s fascinating story to life in a way that – while heightened for Hollywood storytelling – even people with no stock market knowledge can enjoy.

Dumb Money comes to theaters on September 22, 2023.
