Weekend Box Office: Guardians 3 bucks superhero movie fatigue trend

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 has posted one of the smallest second weekend drops in Marvel History

It looks like the buzz about superhero fatigue, or at least Marvel fatigue, was somewhat overblown, with James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 posting a muscular $60.5 million weekend (significantly higher than what I predicted earlier this week). That’s only a 49% second-weekend decline, which, according to Deadline, beats the 55% decline the first two movies saw. In the end, it likely won’t gross as much as either of the other two movies domestically, thanks to a somewhat soft opening and a different marketplace, but the hold is terrific. By comparison, Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania had a disastrous 70% drop in week two, and even the beloved Spider-Man: No Way Home had a 68% drop. Fans seem to love what’s being called the series’s final instalment, although certainly, there’s a way forward for some of the characters…

Meanwhile, despite being Mother’s Day weekend, Book Club: The Next Chapter couldn’t beat those pesky Super Mario Bros for second place, earning only $6.5 million, which was only about half of what 80 For Brady opened to during the summer. That film had the novel idea only to charge discount prices regardless of the showing time, but Focus didn’t opt to follow suit, and indeed, this is a bummer opening for the Jane Fonda/ Diane Keaton- led comedy.

Hypnotic trailer, Ben Affleck

As for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the domestic total for this monster stands at $535.9 million, an incredible number for Imagination’s video game adaption. One movie many people were curious about this weekend was Robert Rodriguez’s Hypnotic. Due to a complicated legal situation, the film was contractually obligated to open on more than 2000 screens, with very little advertising. It still managed to eke out $2.35 million, which I assume most will be calling a disaster, but all things considered, I’m not sure it did all that poorly. Thanks to the lack of advertising, it was never going to do well, and I assume it’ll do better on streaming. Star Ben Affleck’s Air was still hanging around the top 10 despite dropping on Prime Video worldwide this weekend, with it finally passing the $50 million mark in theatres, which is a swell result for a movie that was originally designed to premiere via streaming.

The same can be said for Evil Dead Rise, which was initially slated to be an HBO Max original but has just cleared $60 million at the domestic box office, a strong result that proves once again that horror does really well theatrically.

Way further down the list is Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which posted a $740k weekend for a $92 million gross. It seems unlikely this crowdpleaser will pass the magic $100 million mark, meaning a sequel, sadly, seems unlikely.

BlackBerry, a movie that I loved about the Canadian tech company, opened just outside the top 10 in eleventh place with a $473K weekend. It was only open in 450 screens, but this is a middling opening for such a great film. Hopefully it picks up more traction on streaming. It really is one of the best movies of the year.

Do you think Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 bucked the second-weekend decline trend because of how good it is? Is superhero fatigue real? Let us know in the comments!

Personal Preference Board Game Helps People Become Re-Acquainted Post-Covid

Personal Preference Board Game Helps People Become Re-Acquainted Post-Covid
Social psychology professor updates his classic game on Kickstarter

With people re-emerging from the pandemic-related isolation of the past two years, a new edition of a 35-year old board game may help people reconnect with friends and family. Dr. Don Carlston, an award-winning psychology professor at Purdue University, developed Personal Preference in the 1980s, drawing on research that he and others conducted on how people learn about and view other people. His goal was not only to create a social game that helps people get to know each other better, but also to address issues that he saw with other party games of the 1980s, such as Scruples and Trivial Pursuit. And did he ever succeed: Personal Preference was licensed to three different game companies and sold over 400,000 copies in the United States and Canada.

Dr. Carlston had long wanted to update his game and expand it to cover new topics, and the pandemic provided an ideal time to do so. But this time, rather than licensing Personal Preference to other companies, Dr. Carlston decided to produce it himself so that he could implement some of the innovations he's been thinking about for years. Among those is a way for players to swap out the categories from which items are drawn, allowing players to tailor play to their own interests by choosing among several new categories along with updates of some old ones. He assembled a team of passionate Personal Preference fans to help with these revisions and conduct a Kickstarter campaign to cover the cost of production for the second edition. That campaign is going on now through the end of May.

"The pandemic kept people apart," Dr. Carlston notes, "and now I think they want to re-establish their connections with friends and family. Understanding other people's likes and dislikes is really central to our relationships. So Personal Preference provides a fun way both for seeing how well we really know each other but also for strengthening relationships by getting to know each other better!"

Inflation Now Forcing Consumers Into Bankruptcy

Inflation Now Forcing Consumers Into Bankruptcy
More consumers are forced to seek bankruptcy protection so they can afford basic living expenses

DebtFreeOhio Consumer Counsel

DebtFreeOhio Consumer Counsel

Inflation is forcing many into bankruptcy. Now that the pandemic financial support systems are gone, bankruptcy is becoming the next refuge for consumers who cannot pay basic living expenses due to inflation. Bankruptcy specialist Richard West, Ohio bankruptcy lawyer, explains why inflation is now becoming a leading cause of personal bankruptcy.

"The historical reasons for filing bankruptcy have remained unchanged for decades," according to attorney Richard West, a top filer of bankruptcy cases in Columbus, Ohio. The reasons have been:

  • Medical
  • Job Loss
  • Credit Card debt
  • Divorce
  • Unexpected expenses

"Having filed personal bankruptcy cases in Ohio for over 35 years, I am now seeing more bankruptcy cases caused by inflation," explains West. "In Ohio, consumers who were making ends meet are now being forced into bankruptcy for no reason other than inflation. This is unprecedented," West states. People who are drowning in debt need to explore bankruptcy sooner, rather than later.

"Inflation contributes to personal bankruptcy in several ways," says West. Here are a few examples:

  • Increased Cost of Living: Inflation increases the cost of essential goods and services, making it difficult or impossible for you to afford your basic living expenses. This leads to increased borrowing and more debt, and often, to filing for bankruptcy.
  • Reduced Purchasing Power: Inflation reduces your purchasing power, making it difficult or impossible to pay for even basic needs. This is especially frightening for anyone on a fixed income or those who have had their hours cut back at work.
  • Higher Interest Rates: Inflation has resulted in dramatic increases in the interest rate you pay for all of your credit purchases. This, in turn, makes it harder to pay down your balances.
  • Inability to pay down your balances. This means more of your money goes to interest, making less available for living expenses.

Historically, inflation was considered, at most, an incidental factor in forcing people into bankruptcy. All that is changing, according to West: "Inflation by itself is now 'tipping the scales' for some families, forcing them to choose between paying for basic living expenses and paying down debt."

All of the traditional factors that force consumers to consider bankruptcy remain, but are now amplified by inflation, which causes many to go from "treading water" to drowning in debt.  Bankruptcy is becoming the new "social safety net" for consumers being squeezed beyond their ability to keep their finances under control.

How to fight back against inflation

"As a 35-year veteran consumer bankruptcy attorney, I counsel people who feel embarrassed to seek my advice," says West. If you are unable to reduce the debt significantly in a reasonable amount of time, it's wise to consider bankruptcy. With the proper guidance, you can recover your credit in as little as a year after discharging debt.

Behavioral Health Clinicians & Administrators Rate Netsmart as Highest in User Satisfaction, Black Book 2023 Technology Solutions Survey

Behavioral Health Clinicians & Administrators Rate Netsmart as Highest in User Satisfaction, Black Book 2023 Technology Solutions Survey

Black Book Research announced that Netsmart has earned the 2023 award for highest customer satisfaction in the annual client experience performance ratings of enterprise behavioral health EHR competitors including revenue cycle management applications.

Two thousand eight hundred forty-seven psychologists, therapists, social workers, counselors, and mental health specialists participated in the crowdsourced survey from December 2022 to April 2022. Two hundred thirty-eight financial, administrative, and information technology professionals also participated in separate non-practitioner polling.

Among the user satisfaction survey respondents, groups included ambulatory psychiatric facilities; outpatient physicians, therapists, counselors, social workers, and psychologists; human services and government behavioral health agencies; and substance abuse and addiction medicine providers.

Black Book examined ambulatory behavioral health EHR adoption and usage in the U.S. and found that less than 20% of respondents consider their practices and/or organization equipped to electronically engage in care coordination, patient record exchange or population health initiatives with referral hospitals and physicians in Q2 2023, marginally up from 12 percent in pre-pandemic 2019. The growth potential for the behavioral health ambulatory technology market is estimated by Black Book to exceed 61 percent by year-end 2024, as pending value-based payment reforms require providers to exchange data electronically and coordinate care effectively, and government incentives are under consideration to incentivize mental health technology adoption and connectivity.

As the industry transforms behavioral healthcare delivery with innovations in technologies and investment funding available, over 150 start-up IT vendors specific to mental health processes were added to the Black Book user surveys directory in the past 18 months.

"Year after year, we see Netsmart as the top-rated in the mental health tech industry by client users," said Doug Brown, president of Black Book Market Research. "It's clear that, even in a tightening and increasingly complex market, Netsmart is continuing to lead the behavioral health industry by providing a product that is a vital part of their users' workflow, patient coordination, and critical digital capabilities to the successful providers in the value-based care environment."

Bad Boys 4: Everything We Know

Bad Boys 4: Everything We Know

The Bad Boys franchise is coming out with a fourth installment – let’s take a look at everything we already know.

Bad Boys apparently really are for life as it seems that this action-packed franchise isn’t ending anytime soon with Bad Boys 4 already in production. The series centered around detectives Mike Lowery and Marcus Burnett of the Miami PD has already produced three blockbuster films that have grossed over $840 million as well as a spinoff television show, L.A.’s Finest, making it one of the most successful buddy-cop action-comedy series in history. The most recent film, Bad Boys for Life, was one of the last movies to hit theaters before the pandemic shut them all down and was able to be a critical and monetary success – so why would the franchise stop now?

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence (Lowery and Burnett) recently announced that a fourth film will be coming to theaters and that they’ll both be returning to the buddy-cop franchise. This is music to the ears of fans of the series since Bad Boys for Life left several loose ends and potential plot-lines for the detectives to follow and adding another movie to the franchise is the perfect way to address them. So, all of that said, let’s take a further look into everything we know about Bad Boys 4.

bad boys 4

Plot

While Smith and Lawrence confirmed that the movie is absolutely happening (and is already in production) the announcement is still relatively new and details regarding the plot haven’t been released to the public yet. In other words, nobody besides the people working on the movie know the plot. That said, based off of the information and loose ends that occurred at the end of Bad Boys for Life we can make a couple of educated guesses.

The plot that makes the most sense for a sequel would most likely see Mike and Marcus working on a new case with AMMO with a side-plot of Mike mending/working on his relationship with his son. Fans will remember that the last movie ended with Mike and Marcus being put in charge of AMMO with Mike visiting his son, Armando, in prison and offering him a chance at redemption, so this plot would follow up on those loose ends. Again, this is all speculation, but it would be odd for the previous movie to give such heavy leads and them completely dismiss them.

Cast

Again, the fourth film was only recently announced so there aren’t a surplus of details yet. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence will assuredly return as Mike Lowery and Marcus Burnett, with Eric Dane (known for Euphoria and Grey’s Anatomy) playing the movie’s villain. Actor Ioan Gruffudd (known for Fantastic 4) has also been cast in an undisclosed role and Tasha Smith has been cast to replace Theresa Randle as Marcus Burnett’s wife, but as of now those are the only confirmed cast members.

Despite the cast not having a long confirmed list, just like with the plot we can speculate about who may or may not appear in the film. Since Mike and Marcus were put in charge of AMMO it can be assumed that the other members of the group would return as well, meaning that Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Charles Melton, and Jacob Scipio could all easily show up. There’s also the possibility of Paolo Nunez returning as the newly promoted Captain Rita Secada, as well as a small but still realistic chance of Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba making cameo appearances as Sid Burnett and Nancy McKenna from the spinoff L.A.’s Finest.

bad boys 4

Everything Else

Fans assuredly will want to know when they can expect to see Miami’s finest detectives back on the big-screen, but unfortunately Bad Boys 4 doesn’t have an official release date yet. Not to mention, Bad Boys 4 is not the official title since the film has not released the official title yet and we shouldn’t expect to even see a trailer for quite some time. Will Smith announced the movie via an Instagram video with Martin Lawrence back on January 31 and gave a small update at CinemaCon where he confirmed that the crew was already 4 weeks into filming.

The movie will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (they took over for Michael Bay after the first two films) and will be written by Chris Bremner, the same man who penned Bad Boys for Life. Since filming is now several weeks underway, fans can presumably expect a trailer by the end of the year, but until Smith and Lawrence decide to share any more information with the public, that’s all fans currently have in terms of what to know about the upcoming fourth movie. Even so, it doesn’t diminish the hype factor at all and it certainly looks like the Bad Boys franchise will ultimately be crossing the $1 billion mark once the fourth film hits theaters.

AmplifyBio Adds Manufacturing Capabilities to Expand Service Portfolio

AmplifyBio Adds Manufacturing Capabilities to Expand Service Portfolio
AmplifyBio is adding manufacturing services, starting with cell therapy and plasmids, to its growing capabilities to support the safe development of advanced therapies.

AmplifyBio, an emerging hub for the commercialization of advanced therapies, has announced the addition of cell therapy and plasmid manufacturing capabilities to its leading portfolio of preclinical CRO and drug characterization services. The GMP cell therapy and plasmid manufacturing labs, available in South San Francisco, are the latest step in AmplifyBio's broader strategy to build a development environment that de-risks the commercialization of next-generation therapeutics.

AmplifyBio recently acquired from PACT Pharma, Inc, a privately held biopharmaceutical company developing neoantigen-specific T cell receptor cell therapies, certain capabilities including advanced characterization platforms, bioinformatics capabilities, and a staff of drug development experts with decades of experience in cell therapy, gene editing and immune-focused products like engineered TCR therapies.

With today's announcement, AmplifyBio is adding a variety of manufacturing services to its development sandbox. Clients will have the option to lease GMP space in a purely "hoteling" model, send thought leadership on-site and make use of AmplifyBio's growing team of subject matter experts, or outsource development and manufacturing completely. AmplifyBio will work collaboratively to develop a size and stage-appropriate commercialization plan, including scalable and automated manufacturing. In all three collaborative service models, clients will benefit from AmplifyBio's quality management, characterization, and optimization capabilities and have the option to add integrated preclinical safety or optimization services to their projects.

"We are excited to be able to add cell therapy, gene editing manufacturing and development capabilities in a number of flexible configurations to our portfolio of services," said J. Kelly Ganjei, CEO of AmplifyBio. "This is an important milestone for us as we build a product-focused commercialization partner for advanced therapies, but it's only the beginning. Over the coming months, we will continue to add platforms for manufacturing additional modalities across our sites. Our next addition will be to add mRNA manufacturing, and we will  continue to add characterization platforms and partnerships that ensure the product stays the product, from concept to the clinic."

Cell therapies have the potential to revolutionize the treatment of various diseases and conditions, including cancer, autoimmune disorders, and genetic diseases, but their manufacture is fraught with unanticipated chemistry, manufacturing, and controls (CMC) delays, often resulting from a failure to fully characterize the drug and its function. AmplifyBio is leveraging decades of experience to provide clients with a development sandbox that avoids those delays.

About AmplifyBio

AmplifyBio is a drug development and commercialization partner for advanced therapies with sites in West Jefferson, Ohio, and South San Francisco, California. The Ohio site provides industry-leading preclinical toxicology, safety, and pharmacology testing in an agile environment with high-level analytics capabilities to serve the dynamic safety needs of advanced therapy development. AmplifyBio's California location is dedicated to expert drug discovery, optimization, and characterization services. AmplifyBio clients can harness decades of experience in drug development, safety testing, and manufacturing support services for an end-to-end development partnership that significantly reduces costs and timelines.
