Blade: True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto rewriting Marvel movie

Blade: True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto rewriting Marvel movie

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto has boarded Marvel’s Blade movie starring Mahershala Ali to rewrite the script.

From True Detective to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. THR has reported that Nic Pizzolatto, creator of HBO’s hit crime anthology series, is now working on Marvel’s Blade movie.

Nic Pizzolatto has previously worked with Blade star Mahershala Ali on the third season of True Detective, so this marks something of a reunion for the pair. Sources told THR that Pizzolatto has been working off the existing script by Michael Starrbury (When They See Us) for several weeks now. Ali’s work on the third season of True Detective earned him an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.

With production on Blade expected to get underway late next month in Atlanta, Marvel must be scrambling to get the script in the best shape they can, particularly if the WGA strike happens. Yann Demange (White Boy Rick) is set to direct Blade for Marvel. In addition to Mahershala Ali, Blade will also star Delroy Lindo and Mia Goth.

The character of Blade was originally created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan for The Tomb of Dracula #10 in 1973. Blade is a half-mortal, half-immortal who hunts vampires in order to avenge his mother, who was killed by a vampire as she gave birth to him. Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli) was originally attached to direct Blade, but he wound up stepping down last year, leaving Marvel to push pause on pre-production while they searched for a replacement.

Blade isn’t the only big project Nic Pizzolatto has in the works. It was reported earlier this week that he would be writing and executive producing a series adaptation of The Magnificent Seven for Amazon Studios. The official description of the reboot series reads: “In the tradition of the great epics from the golden age of Westerns, an outlaw and his cohorts must unite a disparate band of indelible fighters to defend a settlement of immigrant homesteaders in an open-range war against cattle barons in central Texas, telling an expansive saga of adventure, action, and romance.” Pizzolatto already has experience with The Magnificent Seven, as he co-wrote Antione Fuqua’s big-screen remake in 2016.

Andor: Diego Luna on the challenges of season 2 of the Star Wars series

Andor: Diego Luna on the challenges of season 2 of the Star Wars series

Diego Luna on the challenges of Andor season 2 now that the first season has become so critically acclaimed.

I don’t think many of us were expecting Andor to be as fantastic as it was, but the acclaim for the first season of the Star Wars series was incredible. With production of Andor season 2 now underway, the cast and crew are facing the pressure of living up to the first season.

It’s nice to be loved, but Diego Luna told THR that the positive reception isn’t necessarily making them more confident while shooting the new season. “What happened with season one comes with a lot of responsibility, and Tony Gillroy is the kind of writer that won’t let us just relax and celebrate,” Luna said. “Tony and his whole team are bringing it. They’re bringing more and more challenges into the mix, and structurally, it’s different. So I don’t think we are confident; I think we are just enjoying it in a way that we didn’t enjoy the first season.” Luna added that while the first season was shot during the worst times of the pandemic, the atmosphere on Andor season 2 is a little more relaxed, “So we are enjoying [it] in a different way.

Despite the challenges of the first season, the actor had a feeling that the series wasn’t going to be seen… simply because of how perfectly everything was going, especially when compared to the Rogue One movie. “I always had a feeling that this wasn’t gonna see the light [of day] till it did. (Laughs.) I kept going, ‘This is too perfect. This is working,’” Luna said. “The whole idea, I always thought, ‘That’s impossible.’ Throughout the whole process, we did exactly what we thought was best. We never prioritized anything but the show. The writing took the time it needed to take, and we got the best cast you can have. So everything just kept getting better and better, and I always had the feeling that something had to go wrong. But it didn’t. We had the freedom and the support of Disney and Lucas[film]. We had the confidence of Kathy [Kennedy] behind the show.

Andor season 2 will be flashing forward and cover a lot more ground than the first season. The conclusion of the first season found Cassian committing himself to the Rebels, but he still has a long journey ahead of him. “He says he wants to be a part of the Rebellion, but I’m not sure if he knows what that means yet,” Luna explained. “He’s basically saying, ‘I want to speak the language,’ but now he has to learn it. And so it’s going to take longer. We’re gonna go for four years [in season two], and when we find him, he’s so far away from where we left him at the end of season one. He’s basically the guy to trust for something like that mission.

The second season of Andor is expected to launch on Disney+ in August 2024.

Mark Hamill trains Cal Kestis in funny Star Wars Jedi: Survivor promo

Mark Hamill trains Cal Kestis in funny Star Wars Jedi: Survivor promo

Mark Hamill pops by to train Cameron Monaghan’s Cal Kestis in a funny promo for the release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

It’s launch day for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the highly anticipated sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The game once again chronicles the journey of Cal Kestis, a young Jedi who survived Order 66 and remained in hiding until he became a target of the Empire. As it’s not easy being a Jedi, Mark Hamill stopped by the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor motion capture stage to give Cameron Monaghan a little advice. You can check out the fun promo video for the game above!

Picking up five years after the events of the first game, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor finds Cal Kestis beginning to feel the weight of being one of the last remaining Jedi in the galaxy as he must stay one step ahead of the Empire’s constant pursuit. Accompanied by his trusty companion BD-1, Cal will meet and ally himself with an array of unique and interesting characters on his journey. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will expand on the series’ dynamic combat in new and innovative ways. In order to survive, Cal must learn new skills and grow his connection with the Force. I found the first game to be quite enjoyable, and the sequel looks like a blast as well, particularly as the lightsaber combat has been developed even more.

Given that the in-game character model of Cal Kestis looks identical to Cameron Monaghan, there have been rumours that he could play the role in live-action as well, which the actor addressed last year. “I love this character. They’re starting to explore him through other mediums — we have a novel coming up,” Monaghan said. “It’s been really amazing doing it within the video game space because I think games are vastly under-explored and underutilized, and are only really getting their due in this moment — people are looking at games and seeing they’re incredible and moving and significant. So my priority right now is to make sure we have a satisfying arc within the games. What happens or where Star Wars wants to go from there is anybody’s guess, but I can say I love Cal and it’s been a joy finding him over the past few years. So we’ll see.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is now available on PlayStation5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC.

TBS Dental Launches Elvatome 2.0, Redefining Tooth Extractions With Advanced Engineering and Precision
TBS Dental introduces elvatome 2.0, a revolutionary dental instrument for precise and effortless tooth extractions.

elvatome 2.0

Straight elvatome 2.0

TBS Dental, a renowned dental equipment manufacturer, has proudly announced the launch of elvatome 2.0, the ultimate dental instrument for tooth extractions. Building on the success of its predecessor, the elvatome 2.0 boasts advanced engineering and craftsmanship, offering unparalleled precision, strength, and ease of use during extractions.

For years, dental practitioners have relied on traditional elevators for tooth extractions, causing significant stress on the tooth-bone complex, leading to alveolar or root fractures. The elvatome was introduced in 2019, combining the strength of a luxating elevator with the precision and sharpness of a periotome, and offering clinicians a superior alternative for multi-rooted teeth extractions. Now, TBS Dental has introduced elvatome 2.0, featuring a patent-pending TWIST handle, enhanced grip, and thicker construction for maximum rigidity and reduced clinician fatigue.

"At TBS Dental, we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of innovation and advancing the field of dentistry," said Haseeb Sajid, CEO of TBS Dental. "The release of elvatome 2.0 is the culmination of years of rigorous R&D and advanced engineering, resulting in a dental tool that offers unparalleled precision, strength, and ease of use during extractions. We are excited to bring this game-changing product to dental practitioners and contribute to the betterment of patient care."

elvatome 2.0 is designed to protect tissue, preserve bone, and enhance the patient experience during tooth extractions. The spade-shaped sharp tip effortlessly severs the periodontal ligament while expanding the alveolar bone, making extractions faster and easier than ever before. Upgrade your dental practice with this revolutionary tool and experience a new level of precision, strength, and ease during every extraction.

Santa Maria Valley Becomes Sizzle Central This May
California's notorious barbecue is 'steaking' its claim as the West's best barbecue, inviting others to experience Sizzle Central

Santa Maria Valley is Sizzle Central

Santa Maria Style put West Coast barbecue on the map 150 years ago. Now, Santa Maria Valley is 'steaking' its claim. Tune in, follow along, and come see how this slice of California's Central Coast celebrates Barbecue Month, #SantaMariaStyle.

Big, bold and ready to showdown and throwdown — this is Sizzle Central. A 30-mile stretch of California's Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley and its expert Santa Maria Style pit masters are prepped and ready to share their expert flavor (and hot takes) with the rest of the world. In honor of National Barbecue Month, Santa Maria Valley will transform into Sizzle Central, an unscripted, spicy and unexpected celebration of all things Santa Maria Style barbecue and is guaranteed to make the culinary world take notice.

No soggy bottoms.

Sauce is out, spice is in, and Santa Maria Valley is entering the chat with tips on how to grill Santa Maria Style. Santa Maria Valley will be calling out barbecue techniques via its social media channels, challenging the status quo and even offering grilling tips in a Home Chef Throwdown, where anyone can upload their personal barbecue "how tos" to Instagram and/or TikTok tagging @SantaMariaValley and using #SizzleCentral hashtag.

To kick things off, Santa Maria Valley is sharing just what you need to get started. An updated Santa Maria Style Cookbook is available to download for free and is full of Santa Maria Style recipes and tips.

Tri-tip + wine country = A match made in heaven. Sip on that, Texas.

So, what sets Santa Maria Style barbecue apart from the rest? (There is no competition as far as Santa Maria Valley is concerned.) Here at Sizzle Central, barbecue isn't a smoke show, rather, it's a spiced-up, red-oak-fired, perfectly wine-paired flavor found in a foodie's dream destination.

"Santa Maria Style barbecue is in a category of its own compared to other styles of barbecue because of how we cook the meats," said Jaime Flores, Santa Maria Valley pitmaster and founder of the Santa Maria Barbecue Festival. "We cook on an open pit and control the heat by raising and lowering our grill. This open pit style allows the meats to cook evenly and the red oak smoke flavors the meats, which are seasoned with a dry seasoning usually consisting of salt, pepper and garlic. With these attributes to our style, there is no reason to sauce the meat."

Each year, hundreds of people gather in mid-May (May 13, this year) for the annual Santa Maria Barbecue Festival, a celebration of grilling Santa Maria Style. The cornerstone of the event is a professional competition with local celebrity judges that vote on the Best Barbecue in Santa Maria Valley as local businesses and professionals compete for bragging rights and the first-place Branding Iron award. There is also a separate competition for "best backyard cook."

"The differences between East, West, North and South vary greatly," said Anthony Minniti, Santa Maria Valley pitmaster. "Each style differs in cooking time, temperature, rub or no rub, and, when applicable, the sauce. I love them all, however, I think Santa Maria Style is the purest form of barbecue because of its balance and simplicity."

Santa Maria Style barbecue started in the mid-19th century when the rancheros gathered to help each other brand their calves each spring. As a thank-you to fellow vaqueros — America's first cowboys — the host would prepare a Spanish-style barbecue, consisting of beef barbecued over a red-oak fire, served with Pinquito beans, bread, salsa and homemade desserts. The region's flagship varieties also pair perfectly with barbecue — cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah — all "bold but gentle" and paired perfectly with barbecue.

So, what are you waiting for? Come to Sizzle Central (whether in person or at home) and experience Santa Maria Style barbecue either for the first time or again and again. Of course, there's no better way than to get the complete Santa Maria Style experience than in person. With 15 beaches and 34 tasting rooms all within a 30-minute drive, Santa Maria Valley is the perfect home base to do more for less. Explore all you can do in and around the valley. For more information, visit santamariavalley.com.

Media Note: Media interested in speaking with a pitmaster, joining the Home Chef Throwdown or experiencing the region to check out all its flavors, please email [email protected]. Media Familiarization Tours are available for interested media on assignment.

Financial Assistance From The Assistance Fund Now Available for Eligible People Living With Rett Syndrome

The Assistance Fund, an independent charitable patient assistance organization that helps patients and families facing high medical out-of-pocket costs, today announced the launch of a new financial assistance program for people living with Rett syndrome. The program is designed to help eligible individuals pay for their out-of-pocket medical expenses related to Rett syndrome, such as copays, health insurance premiums, therapy administration costs, disease management such as prescribing-physician copayments, treatment-related travel costs, diagnostic laboratory tests, and genetic testing.

"People living with Rett syndrome face severe challenges that affect nearly every aspect of their lives," said Melissa Kennedy, CEO at the International Rett Syndrome Foundation. "I'm thankful to The Assistance Fund for opening this door to treatment for families and its longtime commitment to the rare disease community."

Rett syndrome is a rare neurological and developmental disorder impacting mostly female babies and infants. Common symptoms, including loss of hand and verbal skills, most often appear in the first two years. People living with Rett syndrome require a complex series of treatments to manage the condition and improve their quality of life.[1]

"While a diagnosis of Rett syndrome can be devastating for families with young children, access to medication and therapy can mitigate symptoms and improve their quality of life," said Gerald Lauria, Senior Vice President of Business Development and Strategy at The Assistance Fund. "We are tremendously grateful to our generous donors for enabling us to open our new Rett Syndrome Financial Assistance Program and help so many families in need."

First H.E.L.P. and FirstNet®, Built with AT&T, have doubled down on their commitment to provide first responders with world-class mental health training through First H.E.L.P.'s #ResponderReadiness Workshop Series.

#ResponderReadiness Small Group Discussions

During #ResponderReadiness workshops First Responders work in small groups to have candid conversations about stress management and resilience building techniques.

First H.E.L.P. and FirstNet®, Built with AT&T, have doubled down on their commitment to provide first responders with world-class mental health training through First H.E.L.P.'s #ResponderReadiness Workshop Series.

During First H.E.L.P.'s four-hour workshops, first responders explore the "3P's" of responder readiness: performance, persistence, and prevention. Through small group discussions, participants examine the impact that operational stress and trauma have on their careers and families, and take a deep dive using scenario-based training to practice difficult conversations about mental health and suicide prevention with friends, family members, and co-workers. First responders also practice resilience skills using First H.E.L.P.'s #RANGEofResilience.

Upcoming #ResponderReadiness workshops scheduled for Concord, NH, and Chicopee, MA:

  • 15 May: #ResponderReadiness Workshop in Concord, NH, for the NH Fire Academy and EMS Resource Center.
  • 16 May: #ResponderReadiness Workshop and a #RANGEofResilience Instructor for First Responders near Chicopee, MA.

"A combination of organizational, individual, and family readiness is the keystone of an agency's ability to serve their community. In the #ResponderReadiness Workshop, First H.E.L.P. places emphasis on getting far ahead of a potential wellness crisis by developing healthy, positive behaviors that foster an organizational culture that is ready to serve," said Joe Willis, Chief Learning Officer, First H.E.L.P. "While the workshop directly addresses suicide prevention and crisis resource awareness, the primary focus is on resilience and early correction of undesirable behaviors."

First H.E.L.P. tracks first responder suicides throughout the nation. According to data collected by the organization, 86 New England First Responders were known to be lost to suicide since 2017.

AT&T is working to ease the burden for communities by providing this First H.E.L.P. high-quality training to New England first responders at no cost. FirstNet is the only nationwide, high-speed broadband communications platform dedicated to and purpose-built for America's first responders and the extended public safety community. Shaped by the vision of Congress and the first responder community following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, FirstNet is built with AT&T in public-private partnership with the First Responder Network Authority, an independent agency within the federal government.

"AT&T's commitment to our public safety community goes beyond our FirstNet network connectivity," said Dr. Anna Courie, DPN, RN, PHNA-BC, Director, Responder Wellness, FirstNet Program at AT&T. "We are dedicated to working with First H.E.L.P. to bring mental health resources to first responders across the country—especially in rural areas with limited access. This program with First H.E.L.P. will better equip first responders mentally and physically and help our public safety community stay safer."

First H.E.L.P.'s goal for 2023 is to bring its #ResponderReadiness workshop to 1,200 first responders throughout the nation.

"This training will provide important tools that are missing in first responder duty bags," said Christy Lister, a First H.E.L.P. volunteer and co-host of the Beyond the 1st Response podcast. "It is a game changer and will help provide resiliency and normalize conversations about mental well-being."

First H.E.L.P.'s training program reinforces the strategic priorities established by the FirstNet Health and Wellness Coalition (FNHWC) to support first responders and their families. The mission of the FNHWC is to integrate responder, community, industry, and academic capabilities to support the health, wellness, and readiness of American first responders.

The two organizations hope to see this training reach as far into these rural communities as possible. While the training is open to federal, state, and large municipal responders, priority will go to smaller communities.

Visit 1stHELP.org or email [email protected] to learn how to bring this training to your community.
