We’ve previously heard that the Puppet Master video game is coming along slightly later than intended because the developers decided to go ahead and add a single player mode to the game. The multiplayer side of things has been their main focus, but now a single player sandbox game is in the mix as well. Single player mode is called Toulon’s Journals, and will allow players to complete challenges, fight bad guys, earn experience points, and find the lost pages of puppet master Andre Toulon’s journal. The journal pages dive into the back stories of franchise characters and were written by Nat Brehmer, author of the book Puppet Master Complete: A Franchise History (pick up a copy HERE). These journals will be unlockable through audio log form in the single player mode, so you’ll be able to listen to them as you play. And listen to them again later at your own convenience, outside of the single player mode.

In a developer vlog, it was also confirmed that there will be multiplayer bot support for the human characters. So players will be able to play as the puppets, battling human bots. There’s also a game mode called Thief Game, where a player will be able to play as a human, taking on three puppets while seeking to steal the puppet master’s formula.

Interactive website provides best practices for collecting race and ethnicity data to reduce health disparities

WASHINGTON, April 26, 2023 (Newswire.com) - The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) today launched the Race and Ethnicity Stratification Learning Network, a free, interactive, online tool that offers data and best practices to help health plans improve how they collect race and ethnicity data on their enrollees. Improving data collection of race and ethnicity data is vital to improving health equity.

The data available in this new resource summarize the care of 20 million people enrolled in 14 health plans that reported results on 5 HEDIS measures, stratified by race and ethnicity. Best practices on the site come from NCQA's qualitative interviews of key staff at the 14 plans that compose the learning network.

We briefly sit down to discuss Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant with stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim.

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant marks a change of pace for both its director and star. While Jake Gyllenhaal’s been on a fantastic roll lately, playing characters that range from morally complex (The Guilty) to deranged (Spider-Man: Far From Home, Nightcrawler, Ambulance and many more), it’s been a while since he’s played a legit hero. You’d have to go back to Stronger and then before that Source Code to think of a time Gyllenhaal played a guy whose morals were always in the right place. In Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant, he plays a legit hero, Sgt John Kinley, who returns to war-torn Afghanistan to extract the interpreter, Ahmed (Dar Salim), who saved him from the Taliban.

I was lucky enough to sit briefly with Gyllenhaal and Salim for a quick talk about the movie. In our chat, Gyllenhaal explained why he opted to play a more heroic role this time and how the story awoke feelings of patriotism in him. Meanwhile, Salim, who steals the show as the edgy, quick-witted Ahmed, explains why making the two characters have a relationship defined by necessity rather than brotherhood made this a more truthful take on the genre. Both actors seemed thoroughly engaged by the material, with it being one of Guy Ritchie’s darker films.

Every Friday, we’ll be taking a look at another genre movie you can watch in its entirety, free of charge, either on the YouTube channel linked above or in the video embed here.

The Friday Fright Night feature we have for you this week may seem a bit familiar to some of you, because we have shared it as a free movie on JoBlo / Arrow in the Head previously… But its title is The Evil Rises, and how could we resist sharing a movie called The Evil Rises on the same Friday as the release of Evil Dead Rise? We couldn’t.

Writer/director Daniel Florenzano’s 2018 feature debut, The Evil Rises is a movie that gets right to the point. As soon as it begins a couple attending a party on the beach are already digging up an ancient, mysterious statue. And thanks to the fact that one of their pals just happened to attend a seminar on this sort of thing a couple months earlier, we have all the information we need to know about the statue just a few minutes into the movie. That means we’re free to just watch as the partiers decide to handle their discovery in the worst way possible… a decision that results in most of them being wiped out by the time the opening credits have finished. Now that’s a way to get a movie started!

The surviving partiers are then tasked with killing sixty-six people in six days so their new evil master can wreak some havoc. It’s a nice, simple story for a first-time writer/director to bring to the screen – and Florenzano definitely brought a unique touch to the way he tells the story. I don’t think any other filmmaker would have written this story, its characters, or its dialogue in a way that would come close to how Florenzano did.

The Evil Rises has the following official synopsis: A group of young friends discover an ancient statue that unleashes an evil spirit who enslaves them to collect human blood so that the evil spirit can come back to life and rule the world. It’s up to a detective, a priest, and a pizza boy to infiltrate the group’s sinister compound to ward the evil spirit from the Earth before it’s too late.

The film stars Bailey La Flam, Michael Glauser, and Julian De La Mora as the blood-collecting servants of the evil spirit, who is played by Erik Cram. As the detective we have Joe Paulson, with Ed Hollingsworth as the priest and Alec Lobato as Chazz the pizza boy. Viewers might spot adult actress Angel Cassidy along the way as well.

Sadly, Hollingsworth passed away in 2020 at the age of 72, after racking up nine screen acting credits over the last few years of his life. If you want to seek out Hollingsworth’s other screen performances, you can find him playing Dr. James O’Hara in an episode of The Golden Age: Heroes of Men, a butler in Daydream Hotel, Travis Bentley in the crime thriller Carbon, an older father in the short film A Son Never Forgets, Albert in the TV show Promiseland, a Lieutenant in the short film The Day I Woke Up, and Vagabond #3 in a TV movie called Kid Fix.

Seraxis Presents Successful Results Using Synthetic Replacement Endocrine Clusters for Type 1 Diabetes at the 4th IPITA / HSCI / JDRF Summit

GERMANTOWN, Md., April 25, 2023 (Newswire.com) - Seraxis Inc., a pre-clinical stage company with a best-in-class islet replacement therapy for insulin-dependent diabetes, today announced the presentation of results from an efficacy study of Synthetic Replacement Endocrine (SRE) pancreatic clusters. These data were presented by William Rust, PhD, Chief Executive Officer at Seraxis, as an oral podium presentation at the 4th International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association (IPITA) / Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) / Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF) Summit, held from April 24-25, 2023 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The presentation included an introduction to Seraxis' proprietary GMP process for manufacturing SRE clusters for nonclinical and clinical use.

Results from an ongoing type 1 diabetes efficacy study with SRE clusters (SR1423) implanted into the kidney capsule or gonadal fat pad in a diabetic mouse model showed that implantation resulted in sustained euglycemia. Control mice which did not receive an implant remained hyperglycemic. SRE clusters resemble human islets in morphology and distribution of the different hormones expressing cells.

Seraxis has developed a novel human multipotent immortal stem cell line, SR1423 that efficiently differentiates to clusters of functional endocrine pancreatic cells. These Synthetic Replacement Endocrine (SRE) clusters contain cell types that recapitulate native islet function in vitro and potently control blood glucose in vivo. Detailed characterization reveals significant distinctions between SRE, native islets and SC-beta cells. SRE clusters are manufactured following GMP requirements in closed vessels with large-scale formats and are being developed for near-term clinical studies.

IND filing and a Phase 1/2 clinical trial with SRE clusters are on track for 2023 and 2024 respectively.
