Evil Dead Rise Review

Evil Dead Rise Review

Evil Dead Rise is a great new instalment in the franchise that allows everything else that came before to exist, while giving it a new spin.

PLOT: Beth and Ellie, two sisters who have grown apart, are brought back together on a fateful night when Beth stops by to visit her older sister and her kids; Danny, Bridget, and Kassie the youngest.  Things take a turn when budding DJ Danny decides to play some very, very old records they’ve discovered and the mother of all evil is unleashed.

REVIEW: The Evil Dead franchise has been a part of the horror genre for 42 years, even longer if you count the film Within The Woods.  In that time the franchise has focused a lot on Bruce Campbell’s reluctantly heroic final guy Ash Williams.  Even the remake, released ten years ago, managed to include Ash at the very end.  But the times they are a changing and in Evil Dead Rise, Ash Williams is not a part of the story, even though Bruce Campbell is an executive producer and does show up in a fashion (no spoilers here).

And you know what?  Ash not being a part of the bloody festivities is totally okay as Evil Dead Rise stands on its own with new characters facing a very, very old menace and it does it awesomely.

Written and directed by Lee Cronin, Evil Dead Rise expands the universe of the Evil Dead in a smart way that allows literally all of the iterations to exist.  It’s not a remake, reimagining, or a reboot.  Evil Dead Rise is really a sequel or another chapter in the inked in blood book of the Deadites.  That isn’t to say there isn’t a lot of nods and easter eggs within the film…there a lot.  Which adds to the fun for fans who have been loving these films for as long as we have.

Cronin was joined in the endeavor by not just Bruce Campbell but Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert who were also producers on the project.  And you can tell that there was a lot of love for the series from not just the original gang but Cronin and his crew as well.

Evil Dead Rise moves the action from the woods (for the most part) and heads into an apartment building in the middle of the city.  While you may think this would lessen some of the fear aspect for the demons you have obviously never seen The Shining or Demons 2Evil Dead Rise makes the most of what becomes a very confined feeling space and set.  The look of the film is surreal in some spots, using camera angles and lighting to create a dark and sickly mood.

Evil Dead Rise manages to introduce and give you the history of the main characters fairly quickly and does it well.  But it doesn’t waste a lot of time getting to the nitty gritty and once it starts it doesn’t let up.  The film is a brisk 97 minutes and it GOES.  No one is safe either once mom Ellie is transformed into one of the most disturbing and terrifying female monsters I’ve seen in a while.  Actress Alyssa Sutherland is fantastic in this and she worked with Cronin and his team to create not only parts of Ellie’s look but also her movements.  It’s extremely effective and I feel like a lot of fans are going to love it.

Lily Sullivan is also great as Beth who has to fight what was once her sister but also protect her sisters children from what was once their mom.  It’s as messed up as you think it is and honestly even worse than you can imagine as the night from hell rolls along to an ending that would make every therapist in the world’s head explode.

The Necronomicon (a.k.a. the Book of the Dead) featured in Evil Dead Rise is a different book than seen in previous Evil Dead films.

Honestly everyone does a great job with Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols and Nell Fisher all keeping the tension and terror ratcheted up while trying to stay alive.  Nell Fisher is particularly great as the youngest, Kassie who just makes you want to hug her and keep her away from all the bad things as she witnesses pretty much all of the bad things you could see.

Evil Dead Rise is uniquely a very female horror film.  It has female centric leads with a number of horrific scenarios that include aspects of motherhood and sisterhood in ways that only an Evil Dead film could.   Oh, and lets not forget the MVP of the movie, the cheese grater.  Yes it’s as cringe inducing as you could hope and Lee Cronin should be locked up for thinking of that scene.

Evil Dead Rise was originally supposed to be released as an HBOMax streaming exclusive but due to the test audiences reactions it was moved to a theatrical release and it absolutely deserves it.  This is the type of movie you should watch with an audience of fellow horror fans who will get every in joke and who will scream and applaud at every gory moment right along with you.

Oh, and it’s the first horror film in say…30 years to give me a nightmare where I woke up yelling for my mom.  And once you see the movie you’ll wonder why the hell I was doing that because you really should be running away from mommy…she’s with the maggots now. Evil Dead Rise hits theaters everywhere April 21st

Evil Dead Rise was reviewed out of the HorrorHound Weekend Convention.

Evil Dead rights holders Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert are hoping to make new sequels every few years

Star Reach Games Launches Kickstarter for Cysmic, the Groundbreaking Sci-Fi Strategy Board Game
An over-the-top, competitive battle royale set on the surface of a dying planet with a devolving dual-layer board design, asymmetric faction abilities, and over 200 miniatures.

Star Reach Games is thrilled to announce the launch of its highly anticipated sci-fi strategy wargame, Cysmic, going live on Kickstarter on April 25 at 10 a.m. EDT. Inspired by classic disaster movies, Cysmic features an infinite, dual-layered game board that crumbles away during play, revealing powerful ancient relics and providing a cinematic battlefield for the game's 200+ miniatures — including modular Colony Ships, assembled by each player and looming high above the action at over 6 inches tall.

Cysmic is set on the dying surface of Kepler-62e and places players in command of one of the world's 18 factions, each with an individualized starting configuration and asymmetric player abilities to guide strategy and unlock new paths to victory. The goal of the game is simple. To survive the end of the world, players must build a spaceship and be the first to launch their people to safety. There's just one problem: Each faction holds a module blueprint crucial to survival, and to win the game, players must capture those blueprints from their opponents.

In Cysmic, players will be kept on the edge of their seats, constantly adapting, overcoming, and embracing the chaos of a devolving battlefield. Constantly bombarded by earth-shattering seismic activity courtesy of the Tremor Tracker, the frequency of these board-altering events builds over time to an apocalyptic crescendo in flames.

As players obtain blueprints from their enemies and install new modules, they assemble their Colony Ships, creating an eye-catching centerpiece for their territory. Along with significant visual impact, this design provides easy at-a-glance insights into how close each player is to lift-off at any given moment.

Cysmic's easy-to-learn gameplay is powered by a streamlined three-step system that rewards decisive action and in-the-moment strategic command. Just burn a card, play a card, and choose a bonus action. Every player has the same 10 Command Cards, allowing them to choose which phases occur when — because the end of the world is no time to stick to a sequence of play.

Cysmic is available in two formats: the Core Edition for $99 and the Designer Vision Deluxe Edition for $249. The Core Edition provides the complete cinematic experience in an affordable retail format, featuring Star Reach Games' signature Tech Chip Field Display. The Deluxe Edition is an all-out explosion, blasting every element of the game into the stratosphere with a larger board, 3-D terrain, custom combat markers, and 200+ miniatures.

Star Reach Games invites you to embrace the chaos of Cysmic, where there are no points to count, no second prizes, and blasting off first means living to fight another day. Don't miss the launch of this earth-shattering game of sci-fi fighting fun, live on April 25 at 10 a.m. EST.

BNG® Brux Night Guard's (www.BruxNightGuard.com) revolutionary design that is smaller than most dental guards and moldable by the consumer was named one of the Best Night Guards for Grinding Teeth of 2023 by Verywell Health.

Brux Night Guard was chosen as the "Best Night Guard for Minimalists" because of its small design that only covers the front teeth, instead of all the teeth like traditional night guards.

Brux is honored to be recognized as a leader in the field of teeth grinding night guards by such a well-read and respected publication like Verywell Health.

Their editorial process includes testing products at the Verywell Testing Lab, at-home tests, and utilizing a network of board-certified physicians on their Health Medical Expert Board with evidence-based research and fact-checkers to determine the best night guards for grinding teeth and other health products.

After years of trying night guards that were either too hard or too soft, too expensive, and so large they caused a gag reflex, the team at Brux consulted with dentists and designers to put their favorite features into one compact design that has finally helped the team overcome their own bruxism symptoms. Complete mouth guard molding instructions are available on the website.

About Brux Night Guard

BNG® Brux Night Guard was founded in 2016 to provide a more convenient and cost-effective solution for teeth grinding and clenching caused by bruxism. Brux is made in the USA for teeth grinders by teeth grinders who struggled for years with jaw pain and headaches until designing this unique nighttime mouth guard for teeth grinding.

In addition, Financial Advisor SaVion Harris honored as 'Top Black Rising Star of the Year' in Wealth Solutions Report's Pathfinder Awards

Intercontinental Wealth Advisors, an award-winning wealth management firm based in San Antonio known for crafting custom-tailored financial strategies that address their clients' unique wealth preservation needs and multinational interests, recently announced the release of their Sudden Wealth Guide, an educational resource and comprehensive report designed to help inheritors and others who have come into sudden wealth determine what to do and what not to do after receiving a financial windfall.

"Our Sudden Wealth guide provides tips for prudent management of an inheritance or other form of financial windfall."

Howard Lutz, SVP

Intercontinental Wealth Advisors

"There are many types of financial windfalls: earning a big contract, being awarded a legal settlement, the sale of a large property, receiving an unexpected gift, selling a business, etc.," said Howard Lutz, Senior Vice President of Intercontinental Wealth Advisors. "But inheriting a considerable sum due to the death of a loved one can be a different story altogether. Whatever the reason, even though a windfall can be a blessing for your financial life, sudden wealth can be a source of stress and cause headaches if not managed properly."

Intercontinental crafted the guide with the financial health and debt prevention of recipients in mind. Key points, such as establishing and/or reviewing one's estate plan, paying off high-interest rate debt, being prudent with budgeting and saving, considering the power of privacy, honoring a loved one's legacy, not immediately loaning money to loved ones, and more are included in the guide, along with additional salient advice. Individuals who have come into an inheritance or any form of sudden money and are looking for helpful information on how to utilize a windfall to its full potential are encouraged to download the guide

"A windfall has the potential to change your life - and your loved ones' lives - for years to come," added Lutz. "Our guide provides tips for prudent management of an inheritance or other form of sudden wealth, designed to help you through this difficult time so that you can make the most of your new situation."

SAVION HARRIS NAMED 'TOP BLACK RISING STAR OF THE YEAR'

SaVion Harris, Financial Advisor at Intercontinental, was named a 'Top Black Rising Star of the Year' in Wealth Solutions Report's Pathfinder Awards, recognizing Top Black Industry Leaders of 2023 in honor of Black History Month in February.

"The Rising Stars category specifically honors individuals who have attained remarkable achievements early in their careers, with potential to provide decades of exceptional leadership in wealth management," said Julius Buchanan, Managing Editor of Wealth Solutions Report. "Wealth Solutions Report's editorial staff selected candidates with influence, recognition, and a stellar reputation in the industry, who can serve as role models for other professionals and those considering a wealth management career, and who have demonstrated commitment and excellence in the industry."

Harris joined Intercontinental Wealth Advisors in mid-2021 after graduating from the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he played on the football team. His experience on the field sparked an interest in working with professional athletes and also led him to become instrumental in one of the first "name, image and likeness" (NIL) deals in the financial services industry, as Intercontinental entered into a NIL contract with UTSA's star safety, Rashad Wisdom.

"My ultimate goal is to help young athletes manage their money smarter from the start and to provide financial advice from a perspective that matches their own," said Harris. "You often hear horror stories about athletes burning through their money, not investing properly for the long run, being taken advantage of, and even worse. I want to change the narrative and be there to help make sure my clients are protected and reaching their goals - now and in the long term."

In addition, Harris recently joined the UTSA Alumni Association's Board of Directors, becoming its youngest member in history, where he's been focused on getting athletes more involved in Alumni Association events and activities, marketing tailgates and other events, growing the Alumni Association, and networking.

Wealth Solutions Report is a leading free media source for wealth management-related content featuring experts from the financial services industry. Their Pathfinder Awards series celebrates diversity and gives the voices of underrepresented communities a platform by awarding top wealth management executives from underrepresented backgrounds, coinciding with Black History Month, Women's History Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Previously, Isidoro Korngold, Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board at Intercontinental, was awarded 'Hispanic Entrepreneur of the Year' in Wealth Solutions Report's Pathfinder Awards for National Hispanic Heritage Month honoring Hispanic Top Industry Leaders.

Evil Dead Rise scares up $2.5M in Thursday preview screenings

Evil Dead Rise scares up .5M in Thursday preview screenings

Evil Dead Rise Thursday preview screenings signal a strong start for the next chapter of the iconic horror franchise.

Sometimes, dead is better, especially at the box office. The latest chapter of the Evil Dead franchise, Evil Dead Rise, rose to $2.5M in Thursday preview screenings at the domestic box office. While it’s a groovy start for a horror film, it’s important to remember the weekend is just beginning, and theatergoers love a good scare. Friday crowds will likely fill seats for the Lee Cronin-directed horror film, with young adults and mature audiences making up most of the ticket sales.

As promising as Evil Dead Rise looks, The Super Mario Bros. Movie could level up again at the box office with $45 million to $50 million in its third weekend. The Super-Mushroom-powered animated film has already made $724 million worldwide and is well on its way to making $1 billion in gold coins. In addition to making money at the box office, Illumination’s Super Mario movie has a knock-on effect regarding video game sales. Several Super Mario Bros catalog titles are climbing the sales charts, padding Nintendo‘s pockets and bringing the fun of Mario to families and fans worldwide.

Evil Dead Rise could make between $15 million and $20 million in its opening weekend, with some analysts saying it could crawl its way to $25 million. It’s wild to imagine the Evil Dead franchise began as a low-budget horror experiment from the twisted imagination of Sam Raimi.

Lee Cronin directs and writes Evil Dead Rise, with Mirabai Pease, Richard Crouchley, Anna-Maree Thomas, Lily Sullivan, Noah Paul, Alyssa Sutherland, and more starring.

During an interview with AV ClubEvil Dead alum Bruce Campbell revealed they’re hoping to boost the franchise in a significant way by making a new sequel every two or three years.

Campbell said, “It’s all about the books now. It has nothing to do with (franchise hero Ash) or any particular character. In Army of Darkness, we first saw three books. So we know there are three out there, and none of them are any good. It’s about: where does that darn book wind up, who gets it, and what happens? But the universe is the same. It’s about innocent people with no special skills having to fight for their very lives. … I think the stories will progress a little more now. We’re going to try and do them more like every two or three years rather than every 10 years. It’s also the first time Sam is working with his brother Ivan to create an overall Bible that will give future writers and directors an idea of where this thing should go next to potentially tie in some of these stories. So I think it’s going to get a little more tied in as the years go by. But because it’s all about the books. It could be a book in the past, a book in the future. It’s yet to be determined.”

Do you plan to see Evil Dead Rise this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

Evil Dead: Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi suggest adding Freddy, Jason, and Ted Raimi to the game

Evil Dead: Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi suggest adding Freddy, Jason, and Ted Raimi to the game

Bruce Campbell thinks Freddy and Jason should be added to Evil Dead: The Game, while Ted Raimi suggests one of his characters

After the release of Freddy vs. Jason back in 2003, New Line Cinema wanted to make a sequel to the film that would have seen Freddy and Jason doing battle with Ash Williams, the heroic character Bruce Campbell plays in the Evil Dead franchise. Alas, Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash wasn’t to be, as Campbell and his fellow Evil Dead rights holders – franchise creator Sam Raimi and producer Rob Tapert – decided they didn’t want to drop Ash into a sequel to other franchises. They wanted to continue making Evil Dead projects on their own. But now that Evil Dead: The Game is in the world, Campbell has suggested Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash could happen in game land, they just need to add Freddy and Jason as playable characters. Meanwhile, Ted Raimi has his own suggestion for a character that should be added to the game: his Ash vs. Evil Dead character Chet Kaminsky!

During an interview with AV Club, Campbell was asked if he would be interested in having Ash appear in a Mortal Kombat game. He replied, “No, I don’t want Ash to appear in other people’s games. Other creatures like Freddy and Jason should be in the Evil Dead game. You should be able to play as Freddy. You should be able to play as Jason and then have Ash fight those guys. So the video game format is much more welcoming, and then you make a side deal with whoever to get the likeness and the character of Freddy, you let the game company make those deals. So that’s what I would do. But, no, I’m not interested in loaning Ash out. They need to come to our house.

So his “Ash in other games” stance is the same as the “Ash getting mixed into other horror franchises” stance.

Meanwhile, Ted Raimi has taken to social media to ask fans to get in contact with the game’s developers to let them know they would like to see Chet Kaminski get added into Evil Dead: The Game:

Ted Raimi has played multiple roles in the Evil Dead franchise. In addition to playing Chet on Ash vs. Evil Dead, he was a “Fake Shemp” (stand-in) for the original film, he was Possessed Henrietta in Evil Dead II, and was both a Cowardly Warrior and one of Ash’s S-Mart co-workers in Army of Darkness. Possessed Henrietta is already in the game, but it would be nice to have Chet in there as well so fans could play as a recognizable version of Ted Raimi.

What do you think of these character suggestions? Would you like to see Freddy, Jason, and/or Chet get added into Evil Dead: The Game? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

While we wait to see what the future holds for Evil Dead: The Game, the new film Evil Dead Rise is in theatres now. You can read our review HERE.

Iron Lung: Markiplier to direct and star in an adaptation of the David Szymanski horror video game

Iron Lung: Markiplier to direct and star in an adaptation of the David Szymanski horror video game

YouTube sensation Markiplier will direct, write, and star in an adapation of David Szymanski’s horror video game Iron Lung.

Markiplier is breathing easy now that production for Iron Lung is underway. The content creator and entrepreneur will direct, write, and star in the new horror film based on the video game of the same name created by David Szymanski. Markiplier is self-financing the adaptation, with Will Hyde and Jeff Guerrero also producing.

Szymanski’s Iron Lung video game is a brief interactive experience in which players pilot a tiny submarine through an ocean of blood on an alien moon. Sounds like fun, eh? With over 69 million copies sold across digital platforms, including YouTube, the boasts 5,081 “Very Positive” reviews on Steam. Production for the Iron Lung movie is already happening in Austin, Texas.

Per the game’s homepage on Steam:

Set entirely within a claustrophobic one-person submarine nicknamed the “Iron Lung,” you must blindly navigate an ocean of blood to take photographs of key locations and hope whatever lives below doesn’t find you.

There is only a single porthole on the sub. It needs to be closed due to depth pressure, so you have to navigate purely via an incomplete map, proximity sensors, sound, and a primitive external camera which can be used to take the pictures you need to complete your mission or to get a grainy low-resolution visual of what’s happening outside.

Markiplier became famous through his YouTube channel and a “Let’s Play” series of videos and commentary. Subscribers flocked to his analysis of video games in survival action and horror genres, providing fans with hours of entertainment. Makiplier is involved in several other projects, including the YouTube Original Series In Space with Markiplier, the YouTube Original Series A Heist with Markiplier, and The Edge of Sleep, an adaptation of the podcast of the same name.

Video game adaptations are the hottest ticket in Hollywood after the success of film and television projects like HBO’s The Last of Us, Illumination and Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. I expect to see many more games optioned throughout 2023, with Iron Lung being an exciting prospect.

Have you played Iron Lung? If so, what do you think of it? Let us know in the comments.

Selux Diagnostics Receives FDA Clearance on Their Gram-Negative Panel, Expanding the Antibiotic Menu for Its Next Generation Phenotyping System for Rapid AST
Approval gives way to the most comprehensive single menu offered by an AST platform while delivering precise, rapid results in 5.5 hours from isolated colonies.

Selux Diagnostics

Selux Diagnostics Logo

Selux Diagnostics, a biotech startup in Boston whose mission is to combat superbug infections and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), announced it has received its second 510(k) clearance on the Selux Next Generation Phenotyping (NGP) System from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its proprietary NGP Gram-Negative Panel. The newly approved panel, intended for use with isolated colonies, adds 23 gram-negative antimicrobial agents to the rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) platform, a critical diagnostic test that informs personalized antibiotic therapy. The Selux NGP System was first cleared by the FDA in January 2023 along with the Selux NGP Gram-Positive Panel.

With the addition of the Gram-Negative Panel to the Selux NGP System, Selux now offers the most comprehensive AST single panel on the market. The NGP Gram-Negative Panel provides results for twice as many antibiotics per patient sample as legacy AST systems. By combining results for commonly used generic antibiotics with recently approved drugs capable of treating multi-drug resistant (MDR) infections, such as Vabomere and Avycaz, the NGP Gram-Negative Panel uniquely enables clinicians to rapidly provide MDR-infected patients with personalized therapies crucial for survival. The NGP System FDA clearances also include a Breakpoint Change Protocol developed with FDA to allow Selux to rapidly update breakpoints, critical for ensuring Selux NGP customers have up-to-date results that meet College of American Pathologist (CAP) requirements.

"The clearance of our Gram-Negative panel brings us one step closer to combating the surge in antibiotic resistant superbugs. As bacteria are becoming more resistant to antibiotics, laboratories need an AST platform that can keep pace with current breakpoints and room to grow as new drugs come on the market. The ability to receive same-shift results combined with a comprehensive antibiotic menu should save lives, shorten hospital stays, and combat antimicrobial resistance," said Steve Lufkin, CEO of Selux Diagnostics.

"There is a critical need for new tools to combat the impact that AMR has on patients. The Selux NGP System brings innovation to the AST space by delivering rapid results and the latest FDA breakpoints as well as room to add new antibiotic therapies as they become available. With the clearance of this Gram-Negative Panel, Selux is able to help optimize therapies for patients with bacterial infections," said James S. Lewis II, PharmD, FIDSA, co-director of antibiotic stewardship at Oregon Health and Science University, and chair, CLSI Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Subcommittee.

Without a significant change in today's treatment options, experts predict that deaths from superbugs will surpass deaths from cancer by 2050. Selux is working to address this global health crisis by redefining the speed and performance of AST.
