Curiteva Announces First Surgeries Performed With Novel 3D Printed Porous HA PEEK Technology
Curiteva pioneered and received clearance of the world's first 3D printed, fully interconnected porous PEEK structure, utilizing internally developed Fused Filament Fabrication.

Huntsville, AL based technology company, Curiteva announced a limited commercial release utilizing its recently FDA-cleared Inspire Porous PEEK HAFUSE Cervical Interbody System. Curiteva pioneered and received clearance of the world's first 3D printed, fully interconnected porous PEEK structure, utilizing internally developed Fused Filament Fabrication.

The Inspire platform is manufactured utilizing the Evonik VESTAKEEP® i4 3DF PEEK high-performance polymer on a proprietary, patented 3D printer designed, programmed, and built by Curiteva.

Alex Vaccaro, MD, PhD, president of Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopedic Institute shared, "I believe structure drives biology and the lattice PEEK architecture enabled by Curiteva's 3D printing process represents an exciting advancement in spine, orthopedics, and neurosurgical procedures which involve any type of biologic implant."

Kevin Foley, MD, Chairman of Semmes-Murphey Neurologic and Spine Institute and professor of neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery and biomedical engineering at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center stated, "The Inspire porous PEEK technology checks all of the boxes for an ideal interbody implant: fully interconnected porosity, modulus of elasticity equivalent to cancellous bone, strong biomechanical properties, radiolucency, and a bioactive surface for osseointegration."

Randy Dryer, MD, Central Texas Spine Institute commented, "Interconnected porosity, pore size distribution, and nano-surface architecture are typically hallmarks of the most effective synthetic allografts. I believe this novel implant enhanced with HAFUSE nano-surface topography incorporates those features and presents an optimal environment for osteoprogenitor cells to move throughout the implant enhancing bone healing (fusion) and reducing risk of subsidence. I'm excited to offer this to my patients."

"This new technology further demonstrates Curiteva's commitment to developing and investing in disruptive technologies," said Todd Reith, Inventor and Vice President of Emerging Technology. "Our unique architecture is the result of years of research and development in 3D printing. As this technology matures, with our internal expertise, we have already contemplated other applications outside of spine and orthopedics." The company plans a full commercial launch in the United States later this year.

Clock trailer: Dianna Agron, Melora Hardin star in Hulu horror film

Trailer: Dianna Agron and Melora Hardin star in the Hulu Original horror movie Clock, streaming later this month

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5h3WqGDpeYs

The psychological horror thriller Clock is set to be released through the Hulu streaming service on April 28th, and with just three weeks to go until the movie is available to watch a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

Written and directed by Alexis Jacknow, Clock stars Dianna Agron (Glee) and Melora Hardin (The Office) in the story of Ella, a woman who enrolls in a clinical trial to try and fix her seemingly broken biological clock after friends, family, and society pressures her to have children.

Agron and Hardin are joined in the cast by Jay Ali (Carnival Row), playing the husband of Agron’s character Ella, and Saul Rubinek (True Romance) as her father. Hardin’s character is the pioneering doctor managing Ella’s treatment.

A press release notes that Jacknow was tapped to write and direct two short films (Costume Change and the short Clock) under heavy COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 for the first season of 20th Digital Studio’s Bite Size Halloween. The feature version of Clock developed from there and is part of the studio’s existing slate of horror features for Hulu, including Grimcutty, Matriarch, and the upcoming Appendage and The Mill. The 2020 short version of Clock starred Jess Weixler, Tarina Pouncy, and Dylan Christine Sobchack. The synopsis for that one was simply “A businesswoman leaving work appears to be haunted by a baby”, so it sounds like the feature version is quite different from its short predecessor.

Clock was developed by 20th Digital Studio. David Worthen Brooks, Arbi Pedrossian, and Jenna Cavelle serve as executive producers, with Leal Naim producing and Alex Hansen co-producing.

What did you think of the Clock trailer? Will you be watching this movie when it reaches the Hulu streaming service? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

I haven’t seen the Bite Size Halloween short version, but the feature version looks interesting to me, so I’ll probably check it out at some point. I might have to take a look at the short version as well, because I’m a fan of Jess Weixler from her work in the vagina dentata horror movie Teeth.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom release jumps forward five days

Warner Bros. pushes the release of James Wan’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom starring Jason Momoa ahead by five days.

Warner Bros. announced today that the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has jumped forward… but only slightly. The Aquaman sequel was slated to hit theaters on December 25th, but it will now premiere five days earlier on December 20th.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will switch places with Blitz Bazawule’s musical coming-of-age drama The Color Purple, which was originally set for release on December 20th but will now debut on Christmas Day. We still haven’t seen or heard all that much about the Aquaman sequel, but Jason Momoa has teased that the movie is “really a journey with the brothers. Patrick Wilson is phenomenal and there’s just a lot of themes that are going on in it. What I wanted to do was not have some alien force that’s trying to attack us. It’s not gonna be something that’s from an outer world. It’s all about what we’re doing to our planet, and we’re expediting what’s gonna happen when you melt the caps. It’s our future. You’re seeing it happen right now.

As the DC Universe is heading in a new direction under the watchful eye of James Gunn and Peter Safran, it’s still not entirely clear which characters from the old universe will make the transition. Jason Momoa recently said that he’s confident that Aquaman will be a part of their plans. “Peter [Safran]’s my producer [on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom], and is a dear friend,” Jason Momoa said. “I absolutely think Aquaman will be involved in the DCU. It’s on, bro – there’s no one bigger than Aquaman!” Momoa also touched upon Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which he hopes people are excited to see. “It’s fun,” Momoa said. “I really enjoy doing comedy. There’s some really funny stuff with Patrick Wilson. I really adore him. We had a great time working together. It’s like we’re brothers. There’s a lot of cool stuff happening in this one.

In addition to Jason Momoa as Aquaman, the upcoming Aquaman sequel also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, and Amber Heard as Mera. The sequel will find Aquaman forging an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally in a bid to save Atlantis and the rest of the planet. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will now hit theaters on December 20th.

Millennium Trust’s Auto Portability Functionality Ready for Client Testing in June
Network will be open to clients, other portability networks

Millennium Trust Company

Millennium Trust Company logo

Millennium Trust Company, LLC, a leading provider of health, wealth, retirement, and benefits solutions, today announced it soon will offer optional auto portability functionality for its best-in-class automatic rollover IRA solution.

The functionality is designed to connect to existing and new auto portability networks in order to further the industry's ongoing efforts to reduce retirement savings leakage and increase access for all. This new, add-on feature will be ready for client testing later this quarter and available to go live in 2024.

"Thousands of recordkeepers, third-party administrators and plan sponsors - including more than half of the top 20 recordkeepers - partner with Millennium Trust to decrease leakage. Our scale and existing technology integrations put us in the unique position to connect the industry, and we knew we could bring this functionality to market quickly," said Erik Beck, Chief Commercial Officer of Millennium Trust. "We're offering this optional feature so any clients interested in connecting with our extensive network of retirement industry participants will be able to do so quickly and easily."

Millennium Trust's automatic rollover solution has always supported active portability of an IRA owner's funds when the account owner chooses to do so, and now the company is improving and extending the solution's portability options. This current initiative is part of Millennium Trust's more than $30 million commitment to combat retirement savings leakage by reducing friction, expanding access to savings options, and providing more financial education.

Beck said the company is engaged in extensive, ongoing dialogue with clients of all sizes about their needs. Millennium Trust will have the new functionality in place by the end of June 2023, so anyone interested in the feature will be able to first test it and then implement it at no additional cost on Jan. 1, 2024.

Auto portability leverages the core features of Millennium Trust's automatic rollover solution, helping individuals transfer their retirement savings from a former employer's retirement plan to an automatic rollover IRA, and then to their new 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan unless they elect otherwise. It is an optional add-on to the existing automatic rollover solution, wherein low-balance accounts of non-responsive former employees are rolled over to an IRA to maintain the tax advantages of the retirement savings system and reduce leakage.

The SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022 allows Millennium Trust to offer auto portability services to recordkeepers, third-party administrators and plan sponsors of all sizes. Auto portability is not mandatory. Rather, plan sponsors may choose to add auto portability to their existing automatic rollover solution, whether through Millennium Trust or another provider, thanks to Millennium Trust's open network approach to this functionality.

"Millennium Trust wants to make a broad impact on keeping money in the retirement system by partnering with recordkeepers, third-party administrators, plan sponsors and others in our industry. We welcome any current and future retirement industry providers to join us in this mission," Millennium Trust CEO Dan Laszlo said. "No matter the size of the partner, we want to provide a no-cost, fast and easy option to connect so they can offer their clients choice. And we won't stop there. We will continue to work on health and wealth solutions that help individuals long before and well into retirement."

Air Review

Air Review

We review Ben Affleck’s excellent Nike drama Air, starring Matt Damon.

PLOT: In 1984, Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) tries to recruit Michael Jordan as a Hail Mary to save the fledgling basketball shoes division.

REVIEW: Ben Affleck’s Air allows the director to play to all his strengths as a director and actor. Like Argo, it shines a light on an intriguing event from the eighties, but unlike that film, the stakes here aren’t necessarily life and death. But, if you think the idea of a movie about Michael Jordan being signed to Nike is minor, you’d be wrong, as this is a truly involving, entertaining depiction of everything that went into the landmark deal. And this deal forever changed the way athletes are compensated the world over.

Matt Damon is at his best as the plucky Vaccaro. A passionate devotee of the game, he’s trying to put Nike on the map amongst basketball players at a time when Nike, as crazy as it sounds, was unhip. Converse was the biggest sneaker, and Adidas was quickly gaining momentum as the “cool” brand thanks to having placement in hip-hop videos. The movie spends much time depicting the frustration of all involved, who know they have the superior product. In addition to Damon’s Vaccaro, there’s Jason Bateman as Rob Strasser, who’s in charge of marketing and has his family’s future staked on the shoe’s success.

In a showy supporting role, there’s also Ben Affleck himself as Phil Knight, Nike’s colourful CEO, who wears a perm and shows up to the office wearing loud tracksuits. While he initially comes off as a bit of an eighties yuppie send-up, Knight is also depicted as savvy and someone who believes in his employees, particularly Vaccaro, whose gambles often don’t pay off.

The movie follows Damon’s affable Vaccaro as he puts his and the company’s future on the line in his aggressive pursuit of Jordan. Remember that no one had any inkling of what MJ would become at the time, so it was a significant gamble. While we all know the outcome, we don’t know what went into the deal, with much time spent on Vaccaro’s respectful relationship with Jordan’s business-savvy mother, Deloris (played but the great Viola Davis), who wants her son to get his rightful share of whatever profits are made off of his name.

Affleck does a good job evoking the eighties era in a way that this actually feels like a movie that legitimately could have been made in the decade. The film is shot in a way that evokes an older-type movie by Robert Richardson, and Affleck even got Tangerine Dream to work on the score. Notably, the pace is kept tight, with the film running a lean, disciplined 112 minutes, with no fat on the bone whatsoever.

Affleck really has made a movie that sits nicely on the shelf next to Argo, and it seems sure to be a crowd-pleaser, even if you’re not a sports fan. The acting is top shelf, not only from Damon and Affleck, who are well-served by writer Alex Convery’s dialogue but also the entire supporting cast. That includes Chris Messina as Jordan’s shark-like (but not cartoonish agent). In a single scene, Marlon Wayans as college coach George Raveling, delivers the movie’s standout monologue about why you should always listen to your intuition. Chris Tucker is also terrific in an atypical role as Howard White, the man in charge of player relations, who evokes a believable affability that hides his own desire to do right by the families he interacts with.

All in all, Air really is a terrific package, with Affleck having a ton of fun telling this story. It definitely has one of the best soundtracks of the year, with the needle drops running the gamut from Bruce Springsteen to Axel F. Affleck even repurposes Pino Donaggio’s main theme to Brian De Palma’s Body Double to complement the Tangerine Dream music. It’s a nice touch in a movie that’s full of them. While Air will bow on Prime Video within a few months, it’s definitely a movie that delivers on the big screen and a rare adult drama people should go out and support.

Nutrition21 to Showcase Lustriva at NYSCC Supplier’s Day Show

Nutrition21 LLC will be exhibiting at the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists (NYSCC) "Suppliers' Day 2023" show (booth #116) at the Jacob Javitz Convention Center in New York City May 2-3, 2023. The company will be featuring its newest patented beauty-from-within ingredient Lustriva®.

While conventional biotin is often used in beauty supplements, its benefits are vague. Lustriva is a clinically substantiated patented complex that combines Bonded Arginine Silicate with Magnesium Biotinate to promote healthier-looking hair and skin.*

Lustriva is unique in that it significantly increases biotin solubility 40 times greater than that of D-biotin, the form of this vitamin commonly found in beauty products.

In a clinical study1, healthy women who received Lustriva experienced thicker hair as well as a nearly 20% increase in hair growth in as little as three weeks. In the same study, participants also experienced improved skin texture and a 10% reduction in the appearance of wrinkles in just 12 weeks.

According to Catherine Kwik-Uribe, Ph.D., Nutrition21's Vice President of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs, "There are many options in the market today. The research shows that Lustriva's unique formulation offers 2-in-1 benefits that you can see and feel.

"Fortunately, the science and technology behind Lustriva offers formulators the assurance they need that the right forms of biotin and silicon make all the difference; the highly bioavailable forms of silicon and biotin can only be found in this product."

Lustriva is self-affirmed Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status and can be easily incorporated into a variety of products, including dietary supplements, functional foods, gummies and gels, and ready-to-drink beverages in a small clinical dose of 160 mg.

Information on registering for the event can be found here

The Boys: Jensen Ackles to appear as Soldier Boy in Gen V spinoff series

The Boys: Jensen Ackles to appear as Soldier Boy in Gen V spinoff series

Jensen Ackles says that he will appear as Soldier Boy in Gen V, Prime Video’s upcoming spinoff of The Boys.

Jensen Ackles joined The Boys last season to play Soldier Boy, America’s first and greatest superhero, and it sounds as though he’ll make an appearance in the upcoming spinoff series Gen V as well.

While speaking with fans during a Creation New Orleans convention (via Entertainment Weekly), Jensen Ackles revealed that his character of Soldier Boy will show up in Gen V. “Soldier Boy pops up for a brief moment in this new spin-off of The Boys,” Ackles said. “In fact, there’s a few cameos from the mothership that come into this spin-off. My little bit there was heavily [improvised].” Ackles added that The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke was on set with him for filming. “He and I were just, like, we were spitballing ideas and workshopping literally in between takes and coming up with a whole variety of takes,” Ackles said.

Gen V takes place “in America’s only college exclusively for young adult superheroes (or supes) that is run by Vought International.” It will explore the lives of “hormonal, competitive supes as they put their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities. Part college show, part Hunger Games—with all the heart, satire, and raunch of The Boys.

Eric Kripke has previously teased that Gen V would include a few crossovers with The Boys, both in terms of characters and events. “There’s definitely crossover, and we’re doing our best to design a universe that sees some of the issues and storylines in Season 3 hand off to the first season in Varsity,” Kripke said. “Like there’s a presidential campaign happening in the background of that season, and there’s certain things that are happening at that school that are both in reaction to Season 3 of The Boys. There’s Soldier Boy, etcetera, but also some new storylines that are happening in that season of the spinoff that we have to pick up and take into Season 4 of the show.” We don’t have an official release date for Gen V yet, but the spinoff series is expected to premiere on Prime Video sometime this year.

Carebox and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network are Piloting Clinical Trial Matching at the Point of Care

Carebox and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network are Piloting Clinical Trial Matching at the Point of Care
Pilot of EHR-embedded clinical trial matching to enhance diversity in cancer research set to begin at two hospital systems in Texas and West Virginia.

Carebox

Carebox connects patients and physicians seeking treatment options with clinical trials.

Carebox, a leading provider of clinical trial matching solutions, today announced its participation in the launch of the "Blue-button" Matching Project of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN).

The Blue-button tool automatically identifies relevant clinical trials through one-button clinical trial matching integration within electronic health records (EHRs). It puts clinical trial matching into the workflow of treating physicians via automated matching and pre-screening of clinical trials based on the patient record being viewed. This automated matching can surface the hospital system's own portfolio of clinical trials, as well as optionally matching trials within a specified distance from where the patient is located.

ACS CAN has announced that the Blue-button tool will now be piloted with over 500 patients at the University of Texas Southwestern Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center - an urban, academic center - and West Virginia University Cancer Institute, a rural, multi-site community system. The pilot will evaluate whether the tool can increase and diversify trial participation with minimal effort on the part of providers.

Carebox is one of several vendors that will be providing matching technology to ACS CAN for this project. Carebox is the only participating vendor that covers not only all cancer types but also tens of other conditions in its clinical trial matching engine.

"We're very pleased to be able to incorporate Carebox's long-tested matching technology and its ability to provide trial choices to the patients into this pilot, " said Mark Fleury, Ph.D., Policy Principal for ACS CAN and lead investigator on the project.

"The robust platform architecture of Carebox Connect allowed us to take the same matching engine used by over one million patients in our solutions for trial sponsors, patient advocacy groups, and the Carebox Connect web application (https://connect.careboxhealth.com) and make it available as a stand-alone API that supports the HL7® Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®) standard used by EHRs," explained Shaike Marc, Carebox VP of Technology. Carebox is working with several partners to pilot the integration of trial matching into a wide range of digital health application contexts.

Carebox Connect for Sites is used by leading hospital research centers such as UCLA Health across all disease areas being researched, as well as with leading cancer centers such as the Abramson Cancer Center at Penn Medicine and the Moffitt Cancer Center. It enables them to engage, educate, navigate, match, and refer patients and treating physicians to the clinical trial study teams in their centers more effectively.

"We believe that bringing trial matching into the workflow of treating physicians at the point of care will add an important additional dimension to Carebox Connect for Sites," noted Brian Weiss, Carebox CEO. "It will allow research centers to optimize trial recruitment and enhance participant diversity in support of ongoing clinical research. We are proud and excited to be working with ACS CAN on this strategic initiative to evolve and validate this capability."

About Carebox

Carebox connects patients and physicians seeking treatment options with clinical trials. For patients and families, access to information about the newest and most advanced treatment options is obscured and frustrating to find. For pharma companies, clinical trial recruitment is the primary bottleneck in the $100B+ drug development market now being reshaped by precision medicine treatment specificity, new trial models, diversity requirements, and digital health consumer expectations. Carebox is at the forefront of addressing these challenges for patients and their families, as well as for the ecosystem of companies involved in sponsoring, running, and recruiting for clinical trials.

About Carebox Connect

The Carebox Connect cloud platform digitizes Carebox's two decades of experience in navigating over one million patients seeking clinical trial options. It enables trial sponsors of all sizes to educate, engage, navigate, match, qualify, refer, and enroll patients in their clinical trials. Pharma trial sponsors, hospital research centers, and patient advocacy groups use Carebox Connect to present their clinical trial portfolios to the public, optimize trial recruitment, and enhance participant diversity in support of ongoing clinical research.

Joker 2 has wrapped as Todd Phillips shares new looks at Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga

Joker 2 has wrapped as Todd Phillips shares new looks at Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga

Todd Phillips took to Instagram to announce that Joker 2 has finally wrapped after four months of filming. The director also shared two new images from the movie featuring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in character. “That’s a wrap,” Phillips wrote in the caption. “Thanks to these two (+ the entire cast) and the BEST crew that the film industry has to offer. From top to bottom. Gonna crawl into a cave now (edit room) and put it all together.

Joker: Folie à Deux will find Joaquin Phoenix (Beau is Afraid) reprising his role of Arthur Fleck, with Lady Gaga (House of Gucci) starring alongside him as Harley Quinn. Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2) has also returned to reprise her role of Sophie Dumond from the first movie. The rest of the cast consists of Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin), Catherine Keener (The Adam Project), Jacob Lofland (The Son), and Harry Lawtey (The Pale Blue Eye).

Once the first Joker movie became the first R-rated movie to gross over $1 billion worldwide — not to mention earning Joaquin Phoenix the Academy Award for Best Actor — it was only a matter of time before the studio got the ball rolling on a sequel. But the new film won’t be part of the new DC Universe taking shape under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, as it will fall under the DC Elseworlds label which would also include Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II.

Much of Joker: Folie à Deux is expected to take place in Arkham Asylum, which is where we left Arthur Fleck in the last movie. The film has also been described as something of a musical, which has certainly piqued my interest. Although Joker 2 may have wrapped, we still have quite a wait ahead of us as the sequel isn’t set to be released until October 4, 2024.
