Olivia Wilde partners with A24 for series adaptations of A Visit From the Goon Squad & The Candy House

Olivia Wilde is teaming up with A24 to adapt Jennifer Egan’s novels A Visit From the Goon Squad and The Candy House to television.

Olivia Wilde (BooksmartPerfect) and A24 are teaming up to adapt Jennifer Egan’s best-selling novel A Visit From the Goon Squad and its sequel The Candy House, for television. Wilde is directing the series adaptation and executive producing with Jennifer Fox. A Visit From the Goon Squad is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel comprised of 13 interconnected stories with many characters revolving around Bennie Salazar, a record company executive, and his assistant Sasha. Bennie was a punk rocker in his prime. The book explores Bennie and Sasha’s pasts alongside the lives they touch. Music fuels the story, hailed as a startling, exhilarating novel about self-destruction and redemption.

The adaptation is Wilde’s first television project as a director. A24 is known for delivering unique and award-winning films. Still, the studio recently dropped Beef onto Netflix to rave reviews. Beef stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong as two people who let a road rage incident burrow into their minds and slowly consume their thoughts and actions.

Wilde’s latest feature, Don’t Worry Darling, earned approximately $90M worldwide, though the film was not without controversy. Reports of flared tempers on the set haunted the film’s production and PR cycle, with news outlets and tabloid rags paying attention to questionable behavior between Wilde, Jason Sudeikis, and Harry Styles. Aside from the Wilde-Styles-Sudeikis triangle, the film’s female lead, Florence Pugh, was noticeably absent from promotional campaigns leading up to the film’s Venice Film Festival premiere. Many assumed Pugh and Wilde had a falling out, though the depths of the situation remain a mystery.

Wilde has an untitled Sony/Marvel project in development, which many believe to be a Spider-Woman solo film revolving around the classic Marvel character Jessica Drew. Wilde is also in pre-production on Perfect, a biopic about the American gymnast Kerri Strug, who tries to overcome a terrible injury to compete for a gold medal in the 1996 Olympics. The project stars McKenna Grace and Thomasin McKenzie.

Have you read Egan’s novels? The music industry is a dark and dangerous place. The environment is ideally suited to Wilde’s directing style, with an opportunity to cast several stars in memorable roles. We’ll bring you more details as this project develops.

Super Mario Bros continues to dominate the box office as Renfield and Pope’s Exorcist fail to make a mark

Super Mario Bros continues to dominate the box office as Renfield and Pope’s Exorcist fail to make a mark

There’s no shortage of new films hitting cinemas this weekend, but The Super Mario Bros. Movie is ready to butt-stomp the competition for another weekend of collecting gold coins at the box office. According to analystsThe Super Mario Bros. Movie is looking at $58M, with a nine-day $260M domestic total creeping toward $300M. Illumination‘s animated adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom grossed $9.4M on Thursday at 4,343 markets, -13% from Wednesday’s $10.7M. The Super Mario Bros. Movie recently crossed the $500M mark worldwide, becoming the biggest video game adaptation ever.

Renfield and The Pope’s Exorcist war for supernatural supremacy at the box office this weekend, though neither is conjuring dollars at cinemas as we’d assumedRenfield sank its teeth into $900K in Thursday night previews, while The Pope’s Exorcist channeled $850K. The pair of genre films were projected to earn $8M-$10M. Renfield, starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula, Nicholas Hoult as Dracula’s cohort Renfield, and Awkwafina as Rebecca, an officer caught in the vampire’s web of influence, opened in 3,300 theaters. The Pope’s Exorcist, starring Russell Crowe as Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican’s leading exorcist, brought the compelling powers of Christ to 3,100 theaters.

Other notable releases opening this weekend include Crunchyroll’s Makoto Shinkai’s film Suzume, playing in 2,150 theaters, plus IMAX and PLF cinemas. On Thursday, the fantasy animation screened in 2,650 theaters. Shinkai’s whimsical story is nearing $5M for the weekend.

Mafia Mamma is playing in 2,002 theaters for three days in the single digits. Lastly, Briarcliff Entertainment’s Sweetwater is playing in 1,204 theaters. Martin Guigui directs and writes the biographical drama on Hall of Famer Nat ‘Sweetwater’ Clifton, the first African American to sign an NBA contract. The emotional and celebratory film stars Everett Osborne, Cary Elwes, Eric Roberts, and Richard Dreyfuss.

While there are many movies, The Super Mario Bros. Movie will unclog the most dollars from wallets. The Mario movie is a significant hit with families, but also with audience members across the spectrum over the age of 25. We live in a world where Mario is as recognizable as Mickey Mouse. Still, fans have been waiting for a good Mario movie since 1993, after Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton’s adaptation bombed at the box office. Mario’s time has finally come, and he’s here to make as many gold coins as possible before his next silver-screen adventure jumps into action.

Juror No. 2: Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette join the cast of Clint Eastwood’s legal drama

Juror No. 2: Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette join the cast of Clint Eastwood’s legal drama

Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette join Clint Eastwood’s upcoming legal drama Juror No. 2, the filmmaker’s final directorial effort.

Before Clint Eastwood sunsets his career as a director, he’s prepping a last hoorah at Warner Bros to go out with a bang. The 92-year-old filmmaker, who directed Gran TorinoSullyThe Bridges of Madison Country, and more, is prepping Juror No. 2, a legal drama featuring two of Hollywood’s hottest stars. After an exhaustive, months-long process to find the right combination of actors, Nicholas Hoult (RenfieldMad Max: Fury Road) and Toni Collette (HereditaryKnives Out) will join the cast.

Clint Eastwood directs from a script by Jonathan Abrams (Destination WeddingEscape Plan), with a story during a murder trial. When one of the jurors (Hoult) seeks to protect the defendant without putting himself in jeopardy, he progressively realizes he may have caused the victim’s death in a careless driving accident. With the dark truth looming, the juror must decide to lie and reveal the truth about the case. Does he turn himself in? Does he let the defendant hang? Collette will play the prosecutor in the complicated legal matter.

Eastwood hopes to roll cameras by mid-June, making him 93 when filming kicks into high gear. For those of you keeping score, Eastwood will be one of the oldest filmmakers working in Hollywood when Juror No. 2 makes Hoult’s character sweat through a crisis of conscience.

Eastwood’s last movie, Cry Macho, did not go over well with audiences and critics. Rather than let sleeping dogs lie, Eastwood wants to end his directing career with his cowboy hat held high. After fielding several scripts, Eastwood zeroed in on Jonathan Abrams and set to work on rewrites to change the ages of certain characters and add a supporting role. Initially, Eastwood wanted Charlize Theron, but that ship has sailed.

In addition to directing the legal drama, Eastwood produces with Adam Goodman, Tim Moore, and Jessica Meier.

Are you interested in Eastwood’s final turn as a director? Would you tell the truth if you discovered you were responsible for another person’s death? If you stay quiet, you could have a “Telltale Heart” situation on your hands, and no one wants that. Sound off in the comments, and let us know which path you’d choose.

The Third Saturday in October: pair of retro slashers gets May release from Dark Sky

The Third Saturday in October: pair of retro slashers gets May release from Dark Sky

Dark Sky Films will be releasing the retro slashers The Third Saturday in October: Part I and Part V in May!

I primarily associate distributor Dark Sky Films with Adam Green’s Hatchet / Victor Crowley slasher franchise – so it seems very appropriate that the company is now home to the old school style slasher franchise The Third Saturday in October! The two Third Saturday in October films have been making the festival rounds in recent months, and today Dark Sky Films has announced they will be giving them a VOD and digital release on May 5th!

The titles of these slashers are The Third Saturday in October: Part I and The Third Saturday in October: Part V… and if you think it’s confusing that we’re jumping right from one to five, here’s a little more information on exactly what these films are:

What if a lost horror franchise made during the peak of the slasher genre was unearthed today, but only two of the films could be restored? Filmmaker Jay Burleson imagined just that with The Third Saturday in October.

A double feature of terror, The Third Saturday in October: Part V sees unstoppable killer Jakkariah Harding once again stalking and butchering the football-loving residents of a small Alabama town, this time finding a treasure trove of victims after he chances upon a football watch party. And then get ready to see how the horror began in The Third Saturday in October: Part I, which tells the story of Harding’s death row escape and ensuing slaughter as two survivors of his initial attack hunt him down.

Aiming to recreate the by-gone video store days when horror fans might have had to watch a franchise out of order, the filmmakers intended for viewers to start with Part V and then go back to Part 1.

Twice the scares, twice the laughs, and a world-building start of a franchise that’s as outlandishly clever in its deception as every gore set piece it throws on screen, The Third Saturday in October films are a red-blooded American slice of southern gothic infused with a deliciously twisted sense of humor.

Here’s the individual synopsis for The Third Saturday in October: Part V:

It’s Part V. Unstoppable killer Jakkariah “Jack” Harding is back in town after seven years, as he stalks and kills at random before chancing upon a football watch party. The game is, of course, between longstanding rivals the Alabama-Mobile Seahawks and Tennessee A&M Commonwealth. Chaos ensues, in increasingly ridiculous fashion, with inventive murders and multiple love triangles. Hearts are broken and appendages are torn.

The film was written and directed by Jay Burleson and produced by Frank Crafts and Ian J. Cunningham. It stars Kansas Bowling (Christmas Bloody Christmas), Poppy Cunningham (The Death of Dick Long), Taylor Smith (Angels on Earth: The Light of Faith), Bart Hyatt (The Nobodies), Autumnn Jaide (Deathless), Tom Hagale (Dormant), and Parker Love Bowling (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).

Here’s the synopsis for The Third Saturday in October: Part I:

A lost slasher film from the golden age of the slasher genre. October 1979. Ricky Dean is a man on a mission. Years ago, he lost a child at the hands of a psychopathic killer named Jakkariah Harding. When Harding escapes Death Row, Ricky Dean throws himself into the line of fire to stop him from killing again as Harding preys upon a group of friends gathered to watch a college football game.

Burleson again wrote and directed, and producers Crafts and Cunningham were joined on this one by Lauren Musgrove. The film stars Darius Willis (Benched), K.J. Baker (The Starling Girl), Allison Shrum (Ozark), Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Antonio Woodruff (He Got Away), Casey Aud (Love Incidental), Kate Edmonds (Root Letter), and Veanna Black (Single Drunk Female).

Here’s the fake history the filmmakers put together for the franchise: The long lost slasher franchise The Third Saturday in October is back! Red Corpses LLC and Sleep Creature LLC are proud to announce they have partnered with Dark Sky Films to restore and release two entries in the long running slasher saga.

The series began in 1979 as a quick cash-in on John Carpenter’s Halloween. Series producer Frank Crafts, an Alabama native, believed he had a great idea for a horror film with Southern roots – what if Halloween were set in the South, and instead of a traditional holiday, it centered around a Southern institution: college football. Thus, The Third Saturday in October was born, a small-town slasher film revolving around a group of friends watching an annual football match between the Alabama-Mobile Seahawks and the Tennessee A&M Commonwealth. Unfortunately for them, an unstoppable killer named Jakkariah Harding shows up to murder them one by one.

The original film garnered little national attention but birthed multiple low-rent sequels throughout the 1980s before the franchise flamed out when the trashy fourth installment ran the series completely off the rails. Borrowing a page from the Halloween playbook, Crafts doubled down and attempted to resurrect the saga with an unrelated spin-off in 1990, but the series returned to the Jakkariah Harding storyline in 1994, utilizing a comedic approach to hopefully win back its audience. The series officially ended in 2000 with Part VI: The Last Third Saturday in October, but the series ultimately fell victim to what producer Ian Cunningham refers to as “The Third Saturday Curse”, as the films slowly vanished off the face of the earth after a series of unfortunate events, including internal feuding, bankruptcy, a warehouse fire, and cheap VHS manufacturing leading to unplayable tapes.

With the assistance of Dark Sky Films, the creators of the saga have unearthed two of their lost films: the original offering from 1979, and the 1994 sequel The Third Saturday in October: Part V.

The official website for the franchise can be found at THIS LINK.

I have already had the chance to watch both of the Third Saturday in October movies, and as a slasher fan I found them to be a total blast. I’m very glad that more fans are going to have the chance to watch these movies starting next month… and here’s hoping it will be a successful release, because these movies are well-received we might see Burleson fill in the gaps and make the other entries in this “lost franchise”.

The trailer for The Third Saturday in October: Part V can be seen at the top of this article, and the trailer for Part I is right here:

New Hope Fertility Center Offering Innovative PRP Fertility Treatment to Improve Ovarian and Uterine Health
Research shows that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) could help boost egg quality and quantity and improve the effectiveness of fertility treatments like in-vitro fertilization (IVF)

PRP Fertility Treatment

PRP Fertility Treatment

New Hope Fertility is pleased to announce its continued commitment to providing innovative and effective fertility treatments to individuals and couples struggling with infertility. As part of this mission, New Hope is proud to highlight their use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) fertility treatment, a cutting-edge therapy that has shown promising results in improving fertility outcomes. The team of experienced and compassionate fertility specialists is dedicated to using the latest technologies and techniques to help patients achieve their dreams of starting or growing their families.

PRP therapy already has well-established uses in other medical fields, including dermatology and orthopedics. In the context of reproductive medicine, PRP fertility treatment may be able to increase the quantity and quality of eggs produced in an IVF cycle and enhance the growth and development of the endometrial lining. Both of these are important factors for successful egg implantation and pregnancy. Treatment involves collecting a sample of blood from the patient and processing it to separate the platelet-rich plasma from other cellular components. The PRP is then purified and injected back into the patient.

New Hope offers two PRP treatments: ovarian rejuvenation and uterine infusion. Both ovarian PRP and uterine PRP procedures are performed on an outpatient basis using a simple three-step technique. Which procedure is best for a patient depends on their unique situation, with ovarian PRP recommended for individuals who are suffering from a low ovarian reserve, recurrent pregnancy loss, failed IVF, or primary or secondary infertility. Uterine PRP is recommended for patients with thin endometrial linings and recurrent pregnancy loss or implantation failures.

In offering PRP fertility treatments, New Hope is helping meet the urgent need for minimally-invasive and cost-effective procedures for those experiencing infertility over a certain age. While still considered an experimental technique, PRP could be an ideal treatment option for women who are unable to get pregnant through traditional means or who have failed one or more IUI or IVF cycles. A New Hope fertility specialist can help patients determine whether PRP is a viable option and if they are a good candidate for one of the procedures.

Infertility impacts millions of couples worldwide, and success is never guaranteed, even with traditional fertility treatments. Those interested in learning about uterine or ovarian PRP treatment are encouraged to visit New Hope's website or schedule a consultation.

Curiteva Announces First Surgeries Performed With Novel 3D Printed Porous HA PEEK Technology
Curiteva pioneered and received clearance of the world's first 3D printed, fully interconnected porous PEEK structure, utilizing internally developed Fused Filament Fabrication.

Huntsville, AL based technology company, Curiteva announced a limited commercial release utilizing its recently FDA-cleared Inspire Porous PEEK HAFUSE Cervical Interbody System. Curiteva pioneered and received clearance of the world's first 3D printed, fully interconnected porous PEEK structure, utilizing internally developed Fused Filament Fabrication.

The Inspire platform is manufactured utilizing the Evonik VESTAKEEP® i4 3DF PEEK high-performance polymer on a proprietary, patented 3D printer designed, programmed, and built by Curiteva.

Alex Vaccaro, MD, PhD, president of Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopedic Institute shared, "I believe structure drives biology and the lattice PEEK architecture enabled by Curiteva's 3D printing process represents an exciting advancement in spine, orthopedics, and neurosurgical procedures which involve any type of biologic implant."

Kevin Foley, MD, Chairman of Semmes-Murphey Neurologic and Spine Institute and professor of neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery and biomedical engineering at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center stated, "The Inspire porous PEEK technology checks all of the boxes for an ideal interbody implant: fully interconnected porosity, modulus of elasticity equivalent to cancellous bone, strong biomechanical properties, radiolucency, and a bioactive surface for osseointegration."

Randy Dryer, MD, Central Texas Spine Institute commented, "Interconnected porosity, pore size distribution, and nano-surface architecture are typically hallmarks of the most effective synthetic allografts. I believe this novel implant enhanced with HAFUSE nano-surface topography incorporates those features and presents an optimal environment for osteoprogenitor cells to move throughout the implant enhancing bone healing (fusion) and reducing risk of subsidence. I'm excited to offer this to my patients."

"This new technology further demonstrates Curiteva's commitment to developing and investing in disruptive technologies," said Todd Reith, Inventor and Vice President of Emerging Technology. "Our unique architecture is the result of years of research and development in 3D printing. As this technology matures, with our internal expertise, we have already contemplated other applications outside of spine and orthopedics." Clock trailer: Dianna Agron, Melora Hardin star in Hulu horror film

Trailer: Dianna Agron and Melora Hardin star in the Hulu Original horror movie Clock, streaming later this month

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5h3WqGDpeYs

The psychological horror thriller Clock is set to be released through the Hulu streaming service on April 28th, and with just three weeks to go until the movie is available to watch a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

Written and directed by Alexis Jacknow, Clock stars Dianna Agron (Glee) and Melora Hardin (The Office) in the story of Ella, a woman who enrolls in a clinical trial to try and fix her seemingly broken biological clock after friends, family, and society pressures her to have children.

Agron and Hardin are joined in the cast by Jay Ali (Carnival Row), playing the husband of Agron’s character Ella, and Saul Rubinek (True Romance) as her father. Hardin’s character is the pioneering doctor managing Ella’s treatment.

A press release notes that Jacknow was tapped to write and direct two short films (Costume Change and the short Clock) under heavy COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 for the first season of 20th Digital Studio’s Bite Size Halloween. The feature version of Clock developed from there and is part of the studio’s existing slate of horror features for Hulu, including Grimcutty, Matriarch, and the upcoming Appendage and The Mill. The 2020 short version of Clock starred Jess Weixler, Tarina Pouncy, and Dylan Christine Sobchack. The synopsis for that one was simply “A businesswoman leaving work appears to be haunted by a baby”, so it sounds like the feature version is quite different from its short predecessor.

Clock was developed by 20th Digital Studio. David Worthen Brooks, Arbi Pedrossian, and Jenna Cavelle serve as executive producers, with Leal Naim producing and Alex Hansen co-producing.

What did you think of the Clock trailer? Will you be watching this movie when it reaches the Hulu streaming service? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

I haven’t seen the Bite Size Halloween short version, but the feature version looks interesting to me, so I’ll probably check it out at some point. I might have to take a look at the short version as well, because I’m a fan of Jess Weixler from her work in the vagina dentata horror movie Teeth.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom release jumps forward five days

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom release jumps forward five days

Warner Bros. pushes the release of James Wan’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom starring Jason Momoa ahead by five days.

Warner Bros. announced today that the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has jumped forward… but only slightly. The Aquaman sequel was slated to hit theaters on December 25th, but it will now premiere five days earlier on December 20th.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will switch places with Blitz Bazawule’s musical coming-of-age drama The Color Purple, which was originally set for release on December 20th but will now debut on Christmas Day. We still haven’t seen or heard all that much about the Aquaman sequel, but Jason Momoa has teased that the movie is “really a journey with the brothers. Patrick Wilson is phenomenal and there’s just a lot of themes that are going on in it. What I wanted to do was not have some alien force that’s trying to attack us. It’s not gonna be something that’s from an outer world. It’s all about what we’re doing to our planet, and we’re expediting what’s gonna happen when you melt the caps. It’s our future. You’re seeing it happen right now.

As the DC Universe is heading in a new direction under the watchful eye of James Gunn and Peter Safran, it’s still not entirely clear which characters from the old universe will make the transition. Jason Momoa recently said that he’s confident that Aquaman will be a part of their plans. “Peter [Safran]’s my producer [on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom], and is a dear friend,” Jason Momoa said. “I absolutely think Aquaman will be involved in the DCU. It’s on, bro – there’s no one bigger than Aquaman!” Momoa also touched upon Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which he hopes people are excited to see. “It’s fun,” Momoa said. “I really enjoy doing comedy. There’s some really funny stuff with Patrick Wilson. I really adore him. We had a great time working together. It’s like we’re brothers. There’s a lot of cool stuff happening in this one.

In addition to Jason Momoa as Aquaman, the upcoming Aquaman sequel also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, and Amber Heard as Mera. The sequel will find Aquaman forging an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally in a bid to save Atlantis and the rest of the planet. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will now hit theaters on December 20th.
