Global Advanced Metals (USA) and Croom Medical (Ireland) are collaborating to establish a turnkey tantalum-based additive manufacturing (AM) platform. A laser powder bed fusion GE M2 Series 5 printer has been installed within Croom's facility, with the printer being fully dedicated to the use of GAM's tantalum AM powder. With Croom's years of successful contract manufacturing experience, the tantalum print capability is being offered by Croom as a contract manufacturing solution, bringing the advantages of tantalum to the medical device, aerospace, and related markets.

Global Advanced Metals (GAM), headquartered in Massachusetts, USA, has more than a 70-year history of innovation and manufacturing of high-grade tantalum powders for use in electronics and other applications. GAM has more recently developed a spheriodized tantalum powder, a necessary form for use in "printing" of tantalum parts.

Based in County Limerick, Ireland, Croom Medical (Croom) has operated for more than 35 years providing contract manufacturing services to medical device (and other) OEMs. In recent years, Croom has developed an extensive capability in AM technology in collaboration with a number of academic and state-sponsored institutions and has successfully manufactured more than 20,000 devices by AM technology.

AM has a number of key advantages over traditional subtractive manufacturing processes. AM intrinsically uses less material than subtractive methods, produces more complex and lightweight part geometries, can be used for rapid prototyping, and manufactured parts can be ultimately printed in close proximity to point of use.

GAM and Croom are initially targeting the contract manufacturing of medical implants and components that would benefit from the enhanced performance offered by tantalum. Multiple papers cite advantages of tantalum-based implants compared to existing implant materials, including improved biocompatibility (reduced clotting), enhanced bone in-growth, tolerable to higher stress, and produces high surface friction promoting implant stability1,2,3,4,5. These benefits should lower the rate of surgery revisions, thus avoiding patient discomfort and unnecessary added surgery costs. Although use of tantalum in AM applications is relatively new, tantalum has been extensively and successfully used for many years in in-vivo surgical devices such as surgical staples, dental implants, and hip and knee implants. GAM and Croom believe that using AM technology to develop these devices will enable production of complex, porous, strong and lightweight structures.

As part of this collaboration, GAM will provide spherical tantalum powder, produced in its Boyertown, Pennsylvania, plant and derived from ethically and conflict-free-sourced tantalum raw material. The team at Croom will manufacture devices and components for customers using a recently acquired GE M2 printer 100% dedicated to the project and material. In a circular manufacturing cycle, tantalum raw material that cannot be reused in this AM process will be recycled back to GAM's Pennsylvania facility. GAM's raw material and tantalum powder expertise, Croom's decades-long experience manufacturing, finishing and testing devices to medical device standards, and Croom's proximity and relationship with many of the top device OEMs situated in Ireland, positions this collaboration for long-term success.

Andrew O'Donovan, CEO of Global Advanced Metals, added, "GAM is thrilled to work with such an experienced and trusted company as Croom Medical. In recent years, GAM has worked to enhance the production of ultra-pure spherical tantalum powder for 3D printing. GAM views the intrinsic purity and properties of tantalum as a wonderful fit for next generation implants and Croom is the company with the experience, capability and long-established customer relationships to bring this to market."

Ready Computing Appraised at CMMI®V2.0-SVC Maturity Level 2
Ready Computing has been appraised at maturity level 2 of ISACA's Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI®) version 2.0 for Services (SVC).

Ready Computing is excited to announce that it has been appraised at maturity level 2 of ISACA's Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI®) version 2.0 for Services (SVC). Ready Computing is a family of business entities in the commercial and federal sectors that delivers professional services and software products in the health information technology (HIT) space. The appraisal was performed by Multi-Dimensional Maturity, and the results are published on the CMMI Published Appraisal Results (PARs) website.

Ready Computing has one simple vision: "Do great work, be a great place to work." This was the driving force behind the pursuit of CMMI maturity. As an organization already certified to three ISO/IEC Standards (9001:2015, 20000-1:2018, and 27001:2013), adding CMMI maturity only further solidifies the 'Ready Family' of entities as a premier provider of professional services and software products in the HIT industry.

"We will never stop improving," says Mike LaRocca, Founder and CEO at Ready Computing. "As an organization dedicated to continual improvement, our goal is to proactively evolve as our clients' needs, goals, and strategies advance. There are five maturity levels, and Maturity Level 2 is just the beginning of our CMMI journey."

CMMI is a proven, outcome-based performance model and the globally accepted standard for improving capability, optimizing business performance, and aligning operations to business goals. The CMMI framework was architected as a process improvement model that organizations could attempt to benchmark themselves against. To successfully pass the benchmark appraisal, organizations must clearly demonstrate how their systems function through well-established, repeatable, and mature processes. Achieving any level of CMMI maturity requires an organization to embed organizational standards, processes, and controls at its roots and then demonstrate them by producing documented evidence.

"Achieving this prestigious acknowledgment from another internationally recognized and well-respected association, such as ISACA, is absolute proof that our company is dedicated to service excellence," says Anthony Simonetta, Director of Compliance and Risk Management. "This level of recognition is an indisputable way to highlight the key differentiators the 'Ready Family' has to offer its clients and partners."

An appraisal at Maturity Level 2 indicates the organization is performing at a "managed" level. This means that Ready Computing identifies and monitors progress towards project performance objectives.

"It's one thing for a company to claim that it has adopted and adheres to industry-leading standards, but it is a whole extra level of excellence to be formally recognized by multiple world-renowned standards and framework bodies," says Jake Pugh, General Counsel for Ready Computing. "There is no higher level of recognition than for our company to be objectively distinguished as one that does exactly what it says that it does, by multiple independent assessors, who have evaluated us against multiple international standards and frameworks."

Icelandic Manufacturer Drives Environmentalism With New Wool Technology
Icelanders have had a close connection with nature ever since the earliest settlements at the end of the ninth century. That connection has been kindled anew by the manufacturer and retailer Icewear. Their new outdoor line is insulated with Icelandic wool, a unique spin on a product with exceptional benefits. The industry will soon follow suit.

A Couple Wearing Icelandic Wool Insulated Parkas

Icewear, the leading manufacturer and retailer of Icelandic wool products, has been operating in a changing market environment. One could say that responding to the travel restrictions and influxes in tourism has been almost as precarious as the natural environment that Icelandic sheep roam in. Both are rugged and harsh. Both have also spurred adaptation.

Icelandic sheep have been bred in isolation for over a millennium, and their wool has become unique in both quality and demand. At its peak, the Icelandic wool industry was exporting over 900 tons of woolen products annually. That doesn't even weigh in the domestic use of products.

Roaming freely through the Icelandic countryside for five months each year, for centuries, Icelandic flocks have been exposed to the elements. Icelandic farming practices have influenced the wool these sheep grow over countless generations.

Resilience is in the very DNA of Icelandic sheep—quite literally, since it's come out in how their wool grows. And Icewear has now taken this natural resilience to heart and rolled out a new outdoor clothing line based on it.

Environmentalism in Sheep Farming in Iceland

Shortly after lambs are born each spring, Icelandic farmers let their flocks out to roam freely through the summer. Instead of devoting vital resources to the transportation of feed and other supplies, farmers leave sheep to graze on the nourishing and self-sustaining roughage in the countryside.

Icelandic sheep are exposed to the changing weather into the fall before flocks are collected in an annual sheep-gathering festival. Over that time, sheep reach far corners of the countryside and explore the same wonders of the island that draw well over two million tourists each year.

This farming model is better for the sheep, better for the farmers, and better for the land. It's sustainability at its best.

Environmentalism in Icewear

Icewear is the world's only manufacturer of Icelandic wool insulation for outdoor clothing. Along with their traditional Icelandic sweaters and wool souvenirs, it's this new outdoor clothing line that has gained attention among environmentalists.

The Icewear team was determined to make a wool insulation with a combination of the two types of fibers in Icelandic sheep wool. The new Icewear outdoor line is insulated with insulation that uses both parts of the wool—and literal tons of wool that would otherwise be discarded because it doesn't have the structure necessary for yarn. The innovative wool insulation is also OEKO-TEX certified.

Environmentalism in the Icelandic Wool Industry

Icewear has proven that this Icelandic wool insulation model can be profitable as well as environmentally friendly, and it's anticipated that the rest of the wool market will follow suit.

Icewear's innovative use of technology in partnership with Ístex made it possible for the wool industry to become as resilient as the sheep that roam the countryside.

About Icewear

Icewear has been in operation for over 50 years. The company started as a knitting studio in Hvammstangi in 1972, and since has grown into an international line of Icelandic wool and outdoor apparel. Before the launch of the new outdoor line, traditional Icelandic wool sweaters were the products Icewear was best known for. With the new outdoor insulated line, Icewear has championed in a new era for the company, for consumers, and for the wool industry in Iceland and abroad.

About Juneteenth
Juneteenth - also known as "Juneteenth Independence Day" or "Freedom Day" - is a holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in Galveston, Texas, and, more generally, the emancipation of African-American slaves throughout the Confederate South. The state official celebration is generally celebrated on June 19th and is now recognized as a national holiday. Juneteenth symbolically serves as a reference point from which to measure and appreciate the progress and contributions made by African-Americans to society.

About Juneteenth NY Celebration
Now in its 14th year, the Juneteenth NY Celebration is one of the longest-running events commemorating Juneteenth and the preeminent celebration of the holiday in the Tri-State area. Located in Brooklyn, the first Juneteenth NY Celebration was held in East New York and hosted by George Walker Jr. in 2009 with Umoja Events entrusted to carry on the Celebration in 2011. The Celebration was designed to celebrate and empower the Black community. Each year features a theme that seeks to educate the Black community on its history while also changing the narrative of the devastating impact of slavery.

Diabeloop: Launch of a Multi-Country Clinical Study in Adolescents and Young Adults With T1D

Diabeloop: Launch of a Multi-Country Clinical Study in Adolescents and Young Adults With T1D
Unannounced Meal Management Efficacy Key to a Better Quality of Life for People with Diabetes

At the International Conference on Advanced Technologies & Treatments for Diabetes, Diabeloop, a leader in Automated Insulin Delivery technology, announces the launch of a clinical study in adolescents and young adults with T1D, in France, Belgium and Germany. The main objective is the validation of its hybrid closed-loop system that doesn't require meal declarations, a major step towards fully automated solutions.

Major impact on quality of life expected

The open-label, multicenter, randomized, cross-over, four-week outpatient study1 will assess, in real-life conditions, the efficacy of Diabeloop's integrated solution, embarking an Unannounced Meal Management module.

The Automated Insulin Delivery system will also integrate Terumo Corporation's MEDISAFE WITH patch pump, for the first time since the companies announced extended development and commercial agreements a little over a year ago.

The wearable, lightweight patch pump will optimize comfort for the 50 adolescents and young adults with T1D, aged from 12 to 18 years old, enrolled in this study.

Three reference hospitals in France, Belgium and Germany are involved in the trial, whose inclusion phase should be completed by the end of March:

 • Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital, Paris, France, Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition led by Prof. Jacques Beltrand, Principal Investigator of the study
 • Catholic University, Leuven, Belgium, Pediatric Endocrinology Unit, Prof. Kristina Casteels
 • Kinder-und Jugendkrankenhaus, Hannover, Germany, Diabetes Center for Children and Adolescents Auf Der Bult, of Prof. Thomas Danne

"The Diabetes Center AUF DER BULT treats close to 800 youth with type 1 diabetes. Devices for diabetes technology are now a standard at our center. Nevertheless, for many adolescents, it remains a burden to enter carb counts even during automated insulin therapy. We are eager to study new approaches to reduce this burden in our clinical research center like this international collaborative study in adolescents and young adults," declares Prof. Thomas Danne

An answer to patients' needs, driven by scientific observations

More than a mission, patient knowledge is intrinsic to Diabeloop. Therefore, the company understands the increased complexity of insulin management during adolescence; families constantly report difficulties at school and the influence of the social environment on disease acceptance, for example.

Together with their partner CEA-Leti, Diabeloop confirmed and refined the understanding of the unmet need with a workshop: people with diabetes shared their experience of managing diabetes during their teenage years. The burden of diabetes management and the impact of forgetting to bolus were some of the main concerns shared by the participants.

Those experiences very much support the scientific conclusions that led Diabeloop to develop the project of the study, focused on meal management, for 12- to 18-year-old patients.

A study2 indeed showed that only 17% of young patients achieved the HbA1c goal of <7.5%. Another studylooked at the effect of missed meal boluses, concluding that "four missed meal boluses per week can result in a 1% increase in HbA1c" while observing that "it is likely that many missed boluses occur in social settings".

While beneficial to all, a fully closed-loop with Unannounced Meal functionality would have a major impact on quality of life for the younger population, who are also prone to be early adopters of new technologies and patch pumps.

Unannounced Meal Management: more automation, more personalization

The Unannounced Meal Management (UMM) module is directly embedded in Diabeloop's self-learning algorithm.

The UMM feature is automatically activated when the algorithm detects a significant blood glucose rise, associated with a high probability that a meal triggered this spike in glucose levels.

UMM enables patients to not declare a meal. Diabeloop's algorithm will detect an unexpected high and correct it by adjusting insulin doses. Combined with its unique auto-learning capacities - optimizing, among others, the meal ratio incrementally - this innovation contributes to feeding Diabeloop's holistic approach, considering the singularities and the personal needs of every individual.

Erik Huneker, CEO and co-founder of Diabeloop, comments: "Every person with diabetes is unique and deserves solutions that will adapt to his or her physiology and lifestyle. That's why a high level of personalization truly matters. There is still some way towards true fully closed-loop solutions but the integration of the UMM module would be a very significant milestone. The efficacy of the UMM will be firstly assessed in adolescents and young adults with diabetes, who profoundly need this major improvement, but it will be generalized and implemented in all of Diabeloop's AID solutions in the near future".

The development of the Unannounced Meal Management (UMM) and the design of the clinical study for T1D adolescents and young adults have been supported by funding from EIT Health and the consortium members.4

Top-Rated Practice Management Systems Align Tech to Transitioning Medical Office Operations, Black Book Annual Physician Survey

0
Top-Rated Practice Management Systems Align Tech to Transitioning Medical Office Operations, Black Book Annual Physician Survey
The 2023 demand for robust physician practice management tools is fueled by the challenges surrounding increasing administrative burden, shrinking labor pools, and continued reimbursement pressures.

25,501 physicians, practice administrators, financial staff, clinicians, and support personnel from over 22,000 medical offices and clinics participated in the 2023 Black Book Research physician software user polls. The comprehensive survey is comprised of 18 qualitative key performance indicators on client experience and satisfaction, evaluating 208 electronic health records vendors with integrated practice management tools.

For many physician practices, purchasing an appropriate practice management system (PMS) can be a daunting task. Yet, 54% of medical groups with 10 or more clinicians indicated they plan to significantly upgrade or replace their current practice management system software in the next 18 months. Two of the major drivers behind the technology transformations are in response to healthcare industry developments such as the need to document clinical quality to achieve optimized revenue benefits and the intensified requirements for data sharing to coordinate care to ready organizations for value-based care capitation.

Ninety-five percent of those large practices indicated they will select an integrated, cloud-based solution that can offer benefits not available in older practice management systems, including telehealth, workflow process improvements, interoperability, patient portals, and complex analytics tools supporting population health management.

Survey participants indicated the three most pressing digital enhancements they are seeking in replacing their current practice management system:

Analytics and Practice Performance Data - 89% (Note: 91% of practices indicated a pressing need for more robust compliance technology support for reimbursement purposes, and comprehensive EHR compliance with payers, particularly Medicare).

Cybersecurity - 79% (Note: The Mishandling of HIPAA-protected patient data is the greatest risk to practice viability according to 73% of respondents, even greater than medical malpractice claims at 68%).

Revenue cycle & coding improvements - 67% (Note: 90% of survey participants strongly agree that small profit margins per patient and increased demand are directly linked to their need for a lean and ongoing methodology, to patient flow supported by an updated practice management system).

Workflow process improvements - 23% (Note: Demand for patient care is rising as 83% of surveyed practices saw an increase in volumes in the first quarter of 2023).

Interoperability improvements - 18% (Note: 94% of surveyed practices still have daily issues with connectivity with other practices, hospitals, rehab centers, labs, and health care information sources using older legacy systems).

Patient Portal improvements - 9% (Note: 62% of respondents strongly agree that when patients can feed their health data directly into the practice management and integrated EHR solution, physician productivity and the quality of patient care increases).

"One of the major takeaways from this year's polling is the top-rated practice management vendors are demonstrating a proficiency to continually collect performance data from within the individual practice and benchmark that data alongside practices from across the nation," said Doug Brown, Managing Partner of the survey research firm, Black Book™. "This is also enhancing the performance of the overall cloud-based solution for medium and large medical organizations, as it is providing performance scales for every practitioner on the network."

Additionally, the survey revealed that The Great Resignation has affected physician practices more than other industries with the highest office staff attrition rates experienced to date. Nine out of 10 survey participants indicated an attrition rate of over 50% in the past 18 months compared to 13% in 2013. Tied to attrition is the negative impact on practice cash flow to increase salary expenses to retain and hire similarly capable business office and clinical support staff.

Black Book Research measures customer satisfaction across surgical practice user-centric, key performance indicators: strategic alignment of client goals; innovation and optimization; training; client relationships and cultural fit; trust, accountability, transparency, and ethics; breadth of offerings; delivery excellence; deployment and implementation; customization; integration, connectivity, and interfaces; scalability, client adaptability; flexible pricing; reliability; brand image and marketing communications; marginal value adds and modules; financial viability and managerial stability; cybersecurity and patient privacy; support and customer care; and best-of-breed technology and process improvement.

The vendors receiving the highest praise by practice size for 2023 along with the total number of survey subset participants) are:

Solo Practices - eClinicalWorks (n=3,996)

Two to Five Group Practitioners - ModMed (n=5,101)

Six to Ten Group Practitioners - NextGen (n=4,205)

Eleven to Twenty-five Group Practitioners - NextGen (n=4,590)

Twenty-six to Ninety-nine Group Practitioners - NextGen (n=3,315)

One Hundred and over Group Practitioners - Veradigm (n=4,292)

The Genos Center Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is proud to announce a capital campaign for the development of a multi-cultural art gallery, non-denominational chapel, and reflective gardens focused on eradicating genocides worldwide by founder and architectural designer Douglas Isaac Busch.

Designed to raise awareness and education for genocides not only of the past but those occurring today in areas such as Myanmar (also known as Burma), China, Ethiopia, Iraq, Syria and South Sudan, Genos Center will serve as a space of remembrance and education. Curated exhibits will rotate on a six-month basis utilizing art as a powerful medium for storytelling. The center will collaborate with artists, scholars, and educators to create meaningful and impactful experiences for audiences of all ages.

Utilizing eco-sustainable architecture, the building will incorporate sustainable design principles and cutting-edge green technologies, making it a model of energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. The non-denominational chapel and reflective gardens extend the open-air feeling of the architecture, allowing for spaces of calm reflection with drought-tolerant landscaping that create an enriching and enduring experience for all.

Upon completion, The Genos Center Foundation will donate the complete project to an institution, foundation, or city at an agreed time along with an endowment that will maintain the building, staff it, cover taxes and other expenses where it can be sited in perpetuity, to maintain evolving exhibitions and offer a public park destination via the gardens. This plan allows the exhibit space to be continually changing and evolving as a destination for the public from around the world to seek out and observe the evolution of art, architecture, and landscaping.

"Art has the unique ability to humanize the victims of genocide and bring their stories to life in a way that mere words cannot. We hope that by using art as a tool for education, we can help people understand the gravity of genocide and inspire them to take action to prevent it," said Douglas Isaac Busch, founder, and architectural designer of Genos Center.

With an initial commitment of over $1 Million, Douglas Isaac Busch and The Genos Center Foundation understand that every genocide matters. The first phase of the project will require $2M in seed capital of which 50% has been raised with a total of $30M needed for full construction and project completion. Funding opportunities are available at all levels, including capital and endowment. Additional involvement opportunities exist at multiple levels.

Genocide, one of the most heinous crimes against humanity, has been a tragic reality throughout history. The Genos Center Foundation believes that through art and education, we can work towards preventing future genocides and promoting a culture of tolerance and understanding.

"Genos Center will be a place for people to learn about the effects of genocide and its impact on humanity," said Busch. "Through reflection, I hope that this museum will help to raise awareness and promote understanding and healing."

With full design plans in place, Genos Center is currently seeking a final location along with initial founding partner support from individuals, organizations, and foundations to help fund its mission.

For his contributions to the field of regeneration, Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado receives the Vilcek Prize in Biomedical Science. The Vilcek Prize in Biomedical Science is a $100,000 prize awarded annually by the Vilcek Foundation as part of its prizes program.

Awarded annually since 2006, the Vilcek Foundation prizes recognize and celebrate immigrant contributions to scientific research and discovery, and to artistic and cultural advancement in the United States. The prizes provide direct support to individual immigrant scientists and artists and help to raise greater public awareness of the value of immigration for a robust society. In 2023, the Vilcek Foundation awards four prizes in Biomedical Science, comprising the $100,000 Vilcek Prize and three $50,000 prizes—the Vilcek Prizes for Creative Promise in Biomedical Science.

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, molecular and developmental biologist Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado grew up using the scientific method to understand the things that fascinated him in the natural world. As a budding scientist, Sánchez Alvarado moved to the United States to pursue studies in molecular biology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Now a leader in the field of regeneration, he is the executive director and chief scientific officer of the Stowers Institute for Medical Research in Kansas City, Missouri.

"Through the combination of rigorous research and new tools and technologies, Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado has worked to illuminate the important functions that epigenetics and signaling have on the process of regeneration," says Vilcek Foundation Chairman and CEO Jan Vilcek. "His work has important implications on the understanding of cellular and organismal regeneration, and holds enormous promise for our further understanding of core biological concepts."

Says Vilcek Foundation President Rick Kinsel, "Research Institutions in the United States have drawn scientists from around the globe, and many groundbreaking discoveries in research and development in biology, physics, and medicine have been by immigrant scientists. The perspective and insight that foreign-born scientists bring to research and development, and the value of diversity in seeking answers to science and medicine's most perplexing questions, cannot be overstated."

Sánchez Alvarado credits being an immigrant and being bilingual as having a profound impact on his work as a scientist, noting how the syntax interpretations of problems or ideas in two different languages—English and Spanish—help him to form more nuanced ideas and hypotheses. "Because every language is an interpretation of the universe, the more interpretations one has access to, the richer our comprehension of the world becomes," he says.

He also reflects on the sacrifices that immigrants make to pursue the subjects and work they are passionate about in the United States. "We left everything behind to pursue an idea," he says. "[We were] not looking for fame or fortune. [We] are looking for answers to questions."

As part of the Vilcek Foundation's prizes campaign, the foundation has published a biographical profile and video highlighting Sánchez Alvarado's life and work on the Vilcek Foundation website, Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado: "Making the improbable possible."

The Vilcek Foundation

The Vilcek Foundation raises awareness of immigrant contributions in the United States and fosters appreciation of the arts and sciences. The foundation was established in 2000 by Jan and Marica Vilcek, immigrants from the former Czechoslovakia. The mission of the foundation was inspired by the couple's respective careers in biomedical science and art history. Since 2000, the foundation has awarded over $7 million in prizes to foreign-born individuals and supported organizations with over $6 million in grants.

The Vilcek Foundation is a private operating foundation, a federally tax-exempt nonprofit organization under IRS Section 501(c)(3). To learn more, please visit vilcek.org

The Voice Finalist Morgan Myles Joins the Glioblastoma Foundation® as a Celebrity Ambassador to Raise Awareness and Funding for Glioblastoma
The Glioblastoma Foundation® launched a new awareness campaign today featuring Morgan Myles as the celebrity ambassador with the goal of raising awareness of Glioblastoma — the most lethal and common form of brain cancer.

Morgan Myles was a top three finalist on the latest season of NBC's The Voice, and now she is hopeful to use her voice in a different way — to share her family's story and bring more awareness to the work that the Glioblastoma Foundation is doing to assist patients in their fight against this aggressive cancer.

While on The Voice, Myles dedicated her semi-final performance of Lady Gaga's "Remember Us This Way" in memory of her cousin Mac and her grandfather — both of whom she tragically lost to Glioblastoma.

"It was a deeply felt loss for my family," said Myles. "Mac was so young, with so much life to live. I wanted to stay strong for Mac and my family and stay hopeful.

"I channeled everything I was going through with losing Mac into my music. I'm proud to use my platform to bring increased awareness to Glioblastoma and the work of the Glioblastoma Foundation."

Myles is featured in a digital campaign highlighting the urgent need for funding to support the development of new, more effective treatments to help Glioblastoma patients live longer and more comfortably.

Glioblastoma is the most common and most deadly form of brain cancer, with an overall five-year survival rate of just 5 percent. Each year, over 15,000 people are diagnosed with Glioblastoma and half of those diagnosed pass away within one year.

While Glioblastoma has received more attention in recent years due to the introduction of Glioblastoma Awareness Day in 2019 — more public education and research funding is desperately needed.

"We are so grateful to Morgan for sharing her story with us, and for her efforts to bring more awareness and urgency to this deadly disease, for which we desperately need increased funding for new, more effective treatments," said Gita Kwatra, PharmD, MBA, and CEO of the Glioblastoma Foundation.

"The current standard of care for Glioblastoma falls short. Every dollar donated to the Glioblastoma Foundation can make a difference and help fund essential research that will lead to better treatment options and, ultimately, a cure," explained Gita.

Castle Connolly Releases Castle Connolly Top Black Doctors 2023

Castle Connolly Releases Castle Connolly Top Black Doctors 2023
For first time, list recognizes 114 leading black doctors in the nation

Castle Connolly today announced the release of Castle Connolly Top Black Doctors 2023, the first time it has recognized exceptional black doctors in the Castle Connolly network. There are 114 doctors represented, across 20 states and 45 specialties.

The new distinction is part of Castle Connolly's Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative designed to honor top clinicians and enable patients to find Castle Connolly Top Doctors who have shared backgrounds and experiences. As part of this initiative, Castle Connolly surveyed its current Top Doctors (top 7% of physicians in the U.S., all nominated by peers), to share information about their race/ethnicity, gender and sexual identity. Additionally, Castle Connolly has updated its nomination process moving forward to include pertinent questions related to diversity.

"We know that patients want to connect with the best physicians in the country, and they want the best care. But they also might want to connect with physicians who are culturally similar to them," said Dr. Jacqueline Jones, an associate professor of Clinical Otolaryngology at Weill Cornell Medical Center, managing partner of Park Avenue ENT, member, Castle Connolly Advisory Board and executive sponsor of the DEI Initiative. "That connection can be established on so many different levels - whether it's by walking into a room and seeing someone who looks like you, or speaks the same language as you do, or having a doctor who understands where you came from and the cultural significance of your illness. Castle Connolly Top Black Doctors was created to honor the importance of this connection."

A new survey from Everyday Health and Castle Connolly that looks at what patients want most in their doctors showed variations by race. The survey involved 1,001 consumers and 277 healthcare professionals. Almost a third of white patients said their top priority was the ability to listen to questions and concerns, while this was the most important trait for just 20 percent of Black patients. Meanwhile, Black patients were nearly twice as likely as white patients to completely agree that they would be more comfortable and more likely to listen to advice from physicians who shared their race or ethnicity or sexual orientation.

"For patients, having access to a doctor with a similar background or shared experience can improve the quality of care and positively impact health outcomes," said Steve Leibforth, Managing Director, Castle Connolly. "At Castle Connolly, we are committed to advancing DEI and to promoting and embracing our diversity. We are proud to recognize these leading top black doctors and encourage all consumers to do their research to ensure that they are receiving optimal care."

All Castle Connolly Top Black Doctors are nominated by their peers, and then the Castle Connolly research team evaluates important criteria to determine who makes the list, including professional qualifications, education, hospital and faculty appointments, research leadership, professional reputation, disciplinary history, interpersonal skills and outcomes data (where available).

In addition to Castle Connolly Top Black Doctors, Castle Connolly will launch other new recognitions in 2023, including:

 • Exceptional Women in Medicine (March)
 • Top Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Doctors (May)
 • Top LGBTQ+ Doctors (June)
 • Top Hispanic/Latin Doctors (September)
