MicroGenDX Next-Generation Sequencing PJI Study Named as JBJS Notable Article of 2022

MicroGenDX Next-Generation Sequencing PJI Study Named as JBJS Notable Article of 2022
The landmark 14-Site study on the role of Next-Generation Sequencing in Periprosthetic Joint Infections has been acknowledged by the journal as being one of the ten that "will have the greatest impact on patient care."

A landmark multi-center study, "An Enhanced Understanding of Culture-Negative Periprosthetic Joint Infection with Next-Generation Sequencing", has been recognized as one of the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery's Notable Articles of 2022. The article, which was published on June 20, 2022, found that Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) reliably detected potential pathogens in over two-thirds of culture-negative cases.

The head-to-head comparison featured a cohort of over 300 patients that was drawn from 14 top orthopedic institutions, including the Rothman Institute of Orthopedics, Cleveland Clinic, and Rush University Medical Center, over the course of June 2016 to August 2020. The patients all met the 2018 ICM PJI infection criteria and were tested using both NGS and laboratory culture. In 81 of the Periprosthetic Joint Infection (PJI) cases studied (28%), culture was negative, leaving physicians with no knowledge of what to treat. Of those 81, NGS found potential pathogens in 56 patients, with 91% of those 56 cases being polymicrobial (multiple organisms).

Periprosthetic joint infection has a higher mortality rate than prostate cancer, melanoma, or breast cancer. Negative cultures in these cases leave doctors questioning what antimicrobials should be prescribed (forcing them to treat empirically). Just as the 2018 ICM PJI infection criteria helps physicians determine the likelihood of PJI, NGS can now be used to determine the causative organisms. NGS overcomes the failures of traditional culture by seeking out microbes using their DNA rather than relying on growth.

"We are very proud that a paper that utilized our testing was chosen for this distinction. We hope this will bring further attention to NGS and how it can help save lives and limbs." - Rick Martin, CEO MicroGenDX

Communities in Schools of Georgia Receives $15,000,000 Department of Education Grant for 6 Rural GA County Educational Sites

Communities in Schools of Georgia Receives ,000,000 Department of Education Grant for 6 Rural GA County Educational Sites
Funds will support the ACRES Project, to serve as a model for future direct service rural educational programs, increasing social, emotional, mental health and academic support for students and families.

Communities in Schools of Georgia (CISGA) announced today that it is the recipient of the Department of Education's Full-Service Community Schools Program (FSCS) grant for its Georgia ACRES Project: Activating Communities for Rural Education Success. A project to significantly transform rural educational opportunities in six counties across the state and serve as a model for other Georgia sites. The five-year, $3,000,000-a-year grant is one of the largest in the Department of Education history and the most extensive federal grant in CISGA history.

"We are grateful for the vital support of the U.S. Department of Education, which allows us to serve thousands of children across the State," states Carol Lewis, CEO of CISGA. "Together with our local CISGA affiliates, their strong executive directors, and partners, we will use every tool at our disposal to help the State's children face barriers and succeed in both school and life."

The ACRES Project is a comprehensive plan to fully implement all pillars of the FSCS model, with local CISGA affiliates as local lead partners and full-time site coordinators in each school. These site coordinators will assess a student's needs, and then provide direct services and/or make referrals to community partners to ensure a student has everything they need to succeed in and out of the classroom.

The following goals and outcomes will be achieved:

1) improved academic performance,

2) increased social/emotional learning and life skills,

3) improved physical and mental health,

4) increased graduation rates,

5) improved partnerships between schools and families,

6) increased family involvement in education, and

7) increased family connections to community resources.

The following Counties in Georgia will partner with the project:

Ben Hill County; Berrien County; Candler County; Laurens County; Troup County; Twiggs County

The following School Districts will work with Communities in Schools: Candler County School District; Berrien County School District; Dublin City School District; Troup County School District; Twiggs County School District; Ben Hill County School District; Laurens County School District.

"Community schools are an essential component of accelerating our students' learning and supporting their social, emotional, and mental health, and deepening community partnerships. At the height of the pandemic, community schools connected students and families with vital nutrition assistance, mental, physical, and other health services, and expanded learning opportunities. This work continues today because we know that students learn best when there is a comprehensive and holistic approach to meeting their needs," said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. "I am thrilled that through the historic investment, we're announcing now, the Department is funding the largest cohort of grantees in the history of this grant program. This represents a huge step toward the Biden-Harris Administration's goal of doubling the number of Full-Service Community Schools across the country and raising the bar for our support of children."

This year's grant selection process was highly competitive, with the largest number of applications in the history of the program, demonstrating the enormous need to have a continuum of coordinated support to address students' academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs. CISGA is committed to implementing the four pillars of the grant: 1) integrated student supports that address out-of-school barriers to learning through partnerships with social and health service agencies and providers; 2) expanded and enriched learning time and opportunities; 3) active family and community engagement; and 4) collaborative leadership and practices.

About Communities in Schools of Georgia (CISGA):

Communities In Schools of Georgia is the state's leading organization providing wraparound student supports and dropout prevention using an evidence-based model.

Our unique model places a site coordinator inside the schools to build relationships with students. We base success on our ability to build strong local community partnerships with school administrators, regulatory agencies, businesses, and other youth-oriented organizations. Our local CISGA sites tailor programs and activities to meet the specific needs of its community and schools. Types of programs include mentoring, parent education, technology training, literacy initiatives and youth leadership development. CISGA is part of a national organization committed to surrounding students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Sober Safe Spot at Mardi Gras Returns to New Orleans
In partnership with the New Orleans Mayor's office, Avenues Recovery Center announced today the return of their popular Sober Safe Spot event at the February Mardi Gras parades.

Sober Safe Spot

In partnership with the New Orleans Mayor's office, Avenues Recovery Center announced today the return of their popular Sober Safe Spot event at the February Mardi Gras parades.

Last year's inaugural Sober Safe Spots drew hundreds of revelers committed to the recovery community to the specially marked-off locations along parade routes. The safe spots provided an opportunity for people in active recovery and their loved ones to celebrate the joy and culture of Mardi Gras in a sober and safe environment. An overwhelmingly positive response from the community drove Avenues Recovery to make Sober Safe Spot an annual event and part of the fabric of Mardi Gras.

Sober Safe Spot will be manned by Avenues Recovery alumni, a strong community of recovery heroes who are always willing to go above and beyond to help out others in recovery.

"One of the most beautiful parts of Sober Safe Spot is that it was conceived and is coordinated by our alumni," said Ashley Duncan, Alumni and Intake Coordinator at Avenues Recovery of Louisiana. "They have gained so much from their own recovery journeys and are determined to give back."

The gathering spot will be set aside from Feb. 10 through 21 and is open to everyone in the community who wishes to support addiction treatment.

"We are excited to once again partner with Avenues Recovery for this important and necessary addition to our ongoing Mardi Gras safety operations," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "My administration remains committed to meeting our people where they are and directly addressing each and every critical need throughout our city. Our ongoing partnership with Avenues Recovery and their Sober Safe Spot initiative gives us a meaningful opportunity to support our community in addiction treatment and recovery, which will aid us in creating a more inclusive, safe, healthy and thriving city."

All participants will be given specially made T-shirts and other fun swag, allowing them to proudly display their choice to have fun in recovery. A white flag emblazoned with the Sober Safe Spot logo will fly at the neutral ground at the corner of Napoleon Avenue and St. Charles Avenue, making the gathering place easily identifiable to all interested in joining. More details and information can be found on the Sober Safe Spot page on the Avenues Recovery website.

"There are no requirements to joining Sober Safe Spot other than staying sober and having fun," added Duncan. "We hope to see you all there."

Press availability upon request or at the event.

Project Open Hand to Receive Over $1.4 Million in Federal Funding to Support Nutrition-Intervention Services

Project Open Hand to Receive Over .4 Million in Federal Funding to Support Nutrition-Intervention Services
Funds will help improve infrastructure and increase capacity.

Project Open Hand

Serving Meals with Love and Meals that Heal to individuals in the San Francisco Bay Area who are experiencing complex health conditions.

SAN FRANCISCO - January 19, 2023 - (Newswire.com)

Project Open Hand, a leading nonprofit nutrition service provider in the San Francisco Bay Area, announced today that it will receive over $1.4 million in federal funding to support the organization's efforts to provide life-saving, nutrition-intervention services to its clients.

The new federal funding will help improve Project Open Hand's infrastructure, including, but not limited to, purchasing new delivery service vehicles, adding a mobile pantry vehicle, and upgrading kitchen and meal preparation equipment.

"The new federal funding headed to San Francisco for critical community projects like Project Open Hand is a major victory for families in our City," Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi said. "This investment in Project Open Hand's mission to provide nutritious 'meals with love' in our communities will help ease food insecurity and advance Ruth Brinker's vision of a hunger-free San Francisco. Thanks to Democrats' tenacious negotiating, last year's government funding package delivered deeply needed federal funds for projects across San Francisco that help meet the specific needs in our City - and we'll never stop fighting for more."

The planned improvements that will be made with this new funding come at a time when demand for the organization's services continues to rise and requests for meal deliveries from clients continue to grow.

"The funding will go such a long way to update not only our facility in the Tenderloin with new and upgraded infrastructure and equipment, but also the aging fleet of vehicles that deliver our services to clients every single day," Jonathan Jump said, Vice President of Operations at Project Open Hand.

The over $1.4 million in funding is a part of a larger $30 million government funding package aimed to help San Francisco's neighborhood-serving organizations. The funding was announced by Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and signed into law on Dec. 29 by President Joe Biden.

"For 37 years, Project Open Hand's mission has been to serve meals with love to the Bay Area, providing life-saving nutrition for residents who need it most," said Paul Hepfer, Chief Executive Officer of Project Open Hand. "The funds allocated to our organization by Congresswoman Pelosi will ensure that our programs and capacity continue to reach those in critical need of the medically tailored meals that we provide."

About Project Open Hand

Founded in 1985, Project Open Hand is a nonprofit organization that provides meals with love to critically ill neighbors and seniors in San Francisco and Alameda Counties.

Every day, we prepare more than 2,500 nutritious meals and provide more than 200 bags of healthy groceries to help sustain our clients as they battle serious illnesses, isolation, or the health challenges of aging. https://www.openhand.org

Male Contraceptive Initiative Invests in Eppin Pharma to Support Clinical Trials for a Non-Hormonal Male Contraceptive

MCI

Male Contraceptive Initiative's logo

DURHAM, N.C. - January 19, 2023 - (Newswire.com)

Male Contraceptive Initiative (MCI), a 501(c)(3) non-profit, has partnered with the pharmaceutical company Eppin Pharma to provide a Program Related Investment (PRI) of up to $800,000 to support clinical trial activities for the company's novel short-term, non-hormonal oral male contraceptive pill.

This is the latest PRI from Male Contraceptive Initiative and represents the organization's continued evolution as it seeks to expand its support of the male contraception research and development community. "We are very excited about adding additional program related investments to our portfolio as a means of accelerating male contraceptive product development through a collaborative, 'team science' approach. Returns on these investments will go directly back into supporting research efforts to continue driving the field of non-hormonal male contraception forward," said MCI Executive Director Heather Vahdat. "Eppin Pharma is a particularly exciting investment opportunity as they have been integral at advancing the non-hormonal male contraceptive field in an effort to revolutionize family planning by providing reproductive equity to men who still have to rely on only two methods of birth control: condoms and vasectomy," Ms. Vahdat added.

Eppin Pharma's lead male contraceptive candidate is a small organic compound that binds to EPPIN, a protein on the surface of human sperm, resulting in the loss of the sperm's ability to properly function. The non-hormonal treatment Eppin Pharma is developing is intended to be fast-acting and does not affect the production of sperm.

MCI's investment in Eppin Pharma will be used to establish proof-of-concept of safety and feasibility of their contraceptive method as they prepare for human clinical trials. This is an important first step prior to conducting a larger efficacy study required for gaining regulatory approval and widespread consumer access to the therapeutic.

"We have been excited about Eppin's work since 2019, when we provided them with an initial grant to advance their work. Given the success of their science to date, we are pleased to expand our collaboration as Eppin Pharma represents the forefront of pharmacologic, non-hormonal male contraceptive methods," said MCI Research Director Dr. Logan Nickels.

"We are grateful to MCI for their dedication to supporting innovation in male contraception and for recognizing the transformative potential of our work," said Dr. Michael O'Rand, Eppin Pharma's President & Chief Executive Officer. "At Eppin Pharma, we are dedicated to developing new options for men who desire to take control of their fertility and we look forward to advancing our method to clinical trials in the near future," added Dr. O'Rand.

With over $10 million invested in product development, MCI seeks to advance male contraceptive research projects to market in order to achieve its organizational vision of "Reproductive Autonomy for All". MCI's mission is, "To empower men, and couples, to fully contribute to family planning goals by providing them the resources they need for reproductive autonomy."

How Two Best Friends are Disrupting Another Beauty and Wellness Product Category

Trey Vilcoq & Kevin Brodwick

CEO of BRIXY, Trey Vilcoq, and Co-Founder of BRIXY, Kevin Brodwick

SAN DIEGO - January 19, 2023 - (Newswire.com)

For 20 years, BRIXY's founder, Kevin Brodwick, focused on studying harmful chemicals found in consumer products. It's what led him to create a company focused on solving problems created by endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Having created the 1st BPA-free baby bottle and one of the most award-winning sun care lines under the brands Thinkbaby and Thinksport, he became deeply embedded within the movement toward "better for you."

"While being a part of the equation from a product standpoint was amazing, we spent an equal amount of time educating consumers, media, and retailers on the issues surrounding harmful chemicals and providing a path towards being safer," says Brodwick. "At the end of the day, it was our relentless focus on making safe products that gained the attention of people across the planet and a significant amount of organic media attention."

After the Think brands were acquired in 2020, Brodwick and his close friend and business partner Trey Vilcoq began thinking about their next chapter. Their focus beelined to the walls of beauty and wellness products in disposable plastic packaging, knowing only 5-6% of plastic gets recycled.

The question was raised on whether they could create personal care products that were equally (if not more) effective and solved with sustainable, non-plastic packaging. BRIXY was founded on these principles - highly effective and clean solutions that are better for the environment and 100% plastic-free.

Vilcoq says, "The evolution is that 'better for you' is not enough if it causes downstream issues. We layer in our love for the planet and elevate better-for-you with 'better for the planet.'" In the seven-month period since BRIXY launched, they have saved 173,540 plastic bottles from the world's landfills and oceans. "This is only the beginning," says Vilcoq. "With relentless focus on our mission, we expect this number to increase tenfold over the next two years."

Brodwick and Vilcoq's journey to creating safe consumer products has been full of ups and downs. Their shared perspectives on doing good for people and the planet has led Trey to take on the leadership role of CEO at BRIXY, with Brodwick playing the role of mad scientist in the background. Plus, Trey has much better hair … and therefore makes a much more credible spokesman for the haircare side of their story.

Through their experience of building one company and launching another, the two friends have learned a lot over the years. They will be putting those learnings to great use across every aspect of building BRIXY to continue disrupting conventional consumer product categories by introducing better alternatives.

The team behind BRIXY aren't just employees, but a family - all passionate about the planet and sustainable living, but like to look good too (cue hair flip)!

FDA Clears ‘Selux NGP System’ for Rapid Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing
In vitro antimicrobial resistance test enables clinical labs to deliver targeted therapeutic results days faster than the current standard of care, clearing the path for personalized antibiotic therapies

BOSTON - January 19, 2023 - (Newswire.com)

Selux Diagnostics, a biotech startup in Boston whose mission is to combat superbug infections and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), announced it has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its proprietary Next Generation Phenotyping (NGP) System — a rapid antibiotic susceptibility (AST) testing platform that provides targeted therapeutic results days faster than the current standard of care.

The FDA clearance is for Selux Diagnostics' in vitro antimicrobial resistance test, which determines a bacteria's susceptibility to 14 specific antimicrobial agents on the Selux Gram-Positive Panel. Selux's NGP Gram-Negative panel is currently under review by the FDA.

"This clearance represents a significant advance in infectious disease care and the fight to address antibiotic resistance. Our groundbreaking Selux NGP System holds the potential to save lives and decrease overreliance on broad-spectrum antibiotics, a key factor contributing to the rise of superbugs. We thank all our employees, partners, and advisors who contributed to this tremendous accomplishment," said Steve Lufkin, CEO of Selux Diagnostics.

"We have been waiting for true innovation in AST technologies to deliver rapid results that are accurate according to the latest FDA guidelines and include newly approved antibiotics," said James S. Lewis II, PharmD, FIDSA, co-director of antibiotic stewardship at Oregon Health and Science University, and chair, CLSI Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Subcommittee. "I am enthusiastic that the Selux NGP System addresses these critical needs and will become an essential tool for directing personalized therapies for infected patients."

Experts predict that without a significant change in today's treatment options, deaths from superbugs will surpass deaths from cancer by 2050. Selux is confronting this global health crisis head-on by redefining the speed and performance of AST, the critical diagnostic test that informs personalized antibiotic therapy.

Aristotle Announces Panel Dismisses CFTC Motion Against ‘Predictit’ Plaintiffs
Panel of judges side with PredictIt plaintiffs, grant hearing at next possible opportunity

WASHINGTON - January 18, 2023 - (Newswire.com)

A motions panel of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, comprised of three judges, has denied the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's (CFTC) motion to dismiss the appeal of a case brought by more than a dozen plaintiffs, including PredictIt traders, educators, and market service provider Aristotle.

The Court decision ensures that the plaintiffs get a hearing, now scheduled for Feb. 8, 2023, in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, the jurisdiction in which the lawsuit was filed.

"It is Aristotle's view that the CFTC's withdrawal of PredictIt's no-action letter in August has already hurt Traders and it threatens to do even greater harm. We are pleased that the Fifth Circuit agrees that the plaintiffs deserve their day in court as soon as possible," said David Mason, Aristotle General Counsel and former Federal Election Commission (FEC) Chairman.

After several months of inaction in a lower court, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals recognizes the significance of the issues at hand and the damage caused by further delays.

In the Plaintiffs Reply Brief to the Fifth Circuit on Jan. 12, plaintiffs had stated:

"Unelected bureaucrats have been vested with great power over American citizens and businesses and are protected from damages by sovereign immunity, even when they behave arbitrarily. What makes this arrangement remotely consistent with fairness and democracy is that Congress empowered courts to review agencies' momentous decisions and to pause them before they cause too much irreparable damage to the governed.

"This Court should reject the CFTC's attempt to break that balance and evade this crucial check on its power. The Court should grant an injunction, so the substantial legal questions presented on the merits will not be academic when reached, the agency already having done its worst to the citizens it governs."

Aristotle is the contract service provider for the PredictIt Market, which has operated under No-Action Relief CFTC 14-130 since 2014.
