DURHAM, N.C. - January 19, 2023 - (Newswire.com)

Male Contraceptive Initiative (MCI), a 501(c)(3) non-profit, has partnered with the pharmaceutical company Eppin Pharma to provide a Program Related Investment (PRI) of up to $800,000 to support clinical trial activities for the company's novel short-term, non-hormonal oral male contraceptive pill.

This is the latest PRI from Male Contraceptive Initiative and represents the organization's continued evolution as it seeks to expand its support of the male contraception research and development community. "We are very excited about adding additional program related investments to our portfolio as a means of accelerating male contraceptive product development through a collaborative, 'team science' approach. Returns on these investments will go directly back into supporting research efforts to continue driving the field of non-hormonal male contraception forward," said MCI Executive Director Heather Vahdat. "Eppin Pharma is a particularly exciting investment opportunity as they have been integral at advancing the non-hormonal male contraceptive field in an effort to revolutionize family planning by providing reproductive equity to men who still have to rely on only two methods of birth control: condoms and vasectomy," Ms. Vahdat added.

Eppin Pharma's lead male contraceptive candidate is a small organic compound that binds to EPPIN, a protein on the surface of human sperm, resulting in the loss of the sperm's ability to properly function. The non-hormonal treatment Eppin Pharma is developing is intended to be fast-acting and does not affect the production of sperm.

MCI's investment in Eppin Pharma will be used to establish proof-of-concept of safety and feasibility of their contraceptive method as they prepare for human clinical trials. This is an important first step prior to conducting a larger efficacy study required for gaining regulatory approval and widespread consumer access to the therapeutic.

"We have been excited about Eppin's work since 2019, when we provided them with an initial grant to advance their work. Given the success of their science to date, we are pleased to expand our collaboration as Eppin Pharma represents the forefront of pharmacologic, non-hormonal male contraceptive methods," said MCI Research Director Dr. Logan Nickels.

"We are grateful to MCI for their dedication to supporting innovation in male contraception and for recognizing the transformative potential of our work," said Dr. Michael O'Rand, Eppin Pharma's President & Chief Executive Officer. "At Eppin Pharma, we are dedicated to developing new options for men who desire to take control of their fertility and we look forward to advancing our method to clinical trials in the near future," added Dr. O'Rand.

With over $10 million invested in product development, MCI seeks to advance male contraceptive research projects to market in order to achieve its organizational vision of "Reproductive Autonomy for All". MCI's mission is, "To empower men, and couples, to fully contribute to family planning goals by providing them the resources they need for reproductive autonomy."

How Two Best Friends are Disrupting Another Beauty and Wellness Product Category

Trey Vilcoq & Kevin Brodwick

CEO of BRIXY, Trey Vilcoq, and Co-Founder of BRIXY, Kevin Brodwick

SAN DIEGO - January 19, 2023 - (Newswire.com)

For 20 years, BRIXY's founder, Kevin Brodwick, focused on studying harmful chemicals found in consumer products. It's what led him to create a company focused on solving problems created by endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Having created the 1st BPA-free baby bottle and one of the most award-winning sun care lines under the brands Thinkbaby and Thinksport, he became deeply embedded within the movement toward "better for you."

"While being a part of the equation from a product standpoint was amazing, we spent an equal amount of time educating consumers, media, and retailers on the issues surrounding harmful chemicals and providing a path towards being safer," says Brodwick. "At the end of the day, it was our relentless focus on making safe products that gained the attention of people across the planet and a significant amount of organic media attention."

After the Think brands were acquired in 2020, Brodwick and his close friend and business partner Trey Vilcoq began thinking about their next chapter. Their focus beelined to the walls of beauty and wellness products in disposable plastic packaging, knowing only 5-6% of plastic gets recycled.

The question was raised on whether they could create personal care products that were equally (if not more) effective and solved with sustainable, non-plastic packaging. BRIXY was founded on these principles - highly effective and clean solutions that are better for the environment and 100% plastic-free.

Vilcoq says, "The evolution is that 'better for you' is not enough if it causes downstream issues. We layer in our love for the planet and elevate better-for-you with 'better for the planet.'" In the seven-month period since BRIXY launched, they have saved 173,540 plastic bottles from the world's landfills and oceans. "This is only the beginning," says Vilcoq. "With relentless focus on our mission, we expect this number to increase tenfold over the next two years."

Brodwick and Vilcoq's journey to creating safe consumer products has been full of ups and downs. Their shared perspectives on doing good for people and the planet has led Trey to take on the leadership role of CEO at BRIXY, with Brodwick playing the role of mad scientist in the background. Plus, Trey has much better hair … and therefore makes a much more credible spokesman for the haircare side of their story.

Through their experience of building one company and launching another, the two friends have learned a lot over the years. They will be putting those learnings to great use across every aspect of building BRIXY to continue disrupting conventional consumer product categories by introducing better alternatives.

The team behind BRIXY aren't just employees, but a family - all passionate about the planet and sustainable living, but like to look good too (cue hair flip)!

FDA Clears ‘Selux NGP System’ for Rapid Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing
In vitro antimicrobial resistance test enables clinical labs to deliver targeted therapeutic results days faster than the current standard of care, clearing the path for personalized antibiotic therapies

BOSTON - January 19, 2023 - (Newswire.com)

Selux Diagnostics, a biotech startup in Boston whose mission is to combat superbug infections and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), announced it has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its proprietary Next Generation Phenotyping (NGP) System — a rapid antibiotic susceptibility (AST) testing platform that provides targeted therapeutic results days faster than the current standard of care.

The FDA clearance is for Selux Diagnostics' in vitro antimicrobial resistance test, which determines a bacteria's susceptibility to 14 specific antimicrobial agents on the Selux Gram-Positive Panel. Selux's NGP Gram-Negative panel is currently under review by the FDA.

"This clearance represents a significant advance in infectious disease care and the fight to address antibiotic resistance. Our groundbreaking Selux NGP System holds the potential to save lives and decrease overreliance on broad-spectrum antibiotics, a key factor contributing to the rise of superbugs. We thank all our employees, partners, and advisors who contributed to this tremendous accomplishment," said Steve Lufkin, CEO of Selux Diagnostics.

"We have been waiting for true innovation in AST technologies to deliver rapid results that are accurate according to the latest FDA guidelines and include newly approved antibiotics," said James S. Lewis II, PharmD, FIDSA, co-director of antibiotic stewardship at Oregon Health and Science University, and chair, CLSI Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Subcommittee. "I am enthusiastic that the Selux NGP System addresses these critical needs and will become an essential tool for directing personalized therapies for infected patients."

Experts predict that without a significant change in today's treatment options, deaths from superbugs will surpass deaths from cancer by 2050. Selux is confronting this global health crisis head-on by redefining the speed and performance of AST, the critical diagnostic test that informs personalized antibiotic therapy.

Aristotle Announces Panel Dismisses CFTC Motion Against ‘Predictit’ Plaintiffs
Panel of judges side with PredictIt plaintiffs, grant hearing at next possible opportunity

WASHINGTON - January 18, 2023 - (Newswire.com)

A motions panel of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, comprised of three judges, has denied the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's (CFTC) motion to dismiss the appeal of a case brought by more than a dozen plaintiffs, including PredictIt traders, educators, and market service provider Aristotle.

The Court decision ensures that the plaintiffs get a hearing, now scheduled for Feb. 8, 2023, in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, the jurisdiction in which the lawsuit was filed.

"It is Aristotle's view that the CFTC's withdrawal of PredictIt's no-action letter in August has already hurt Traders and it threatens to do even greater harm. We are pleased that the Fifth Circuit agrees that the plaintiffs deserve their day in court as soon as possible," said David Mason, Aristotle General Counsel and former Federal Election Commission (FEC) Chairman.

After several months of inaction in a lower court, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals recognizes the significance of the issues at hand and the damage caused by further delays.

In the Plaintiffs Reply Brief to the Fifth Circuit on Jan. 12, plaintiffs had stated:

"Unelected bureaucrats have been vested with great power over American citizens and businesses and are protected from damages by sovereign immunity, even when they behave arbitrarily. What makes this arrangement remotely consistent with fairness and democracy is that Congress empowered courts to review agencies' momentous decisions and to pause them before they cause too much irreparable damage to the governed.

"This Court should reject the CFTC's attempt to break that balance and evade this crucial check on its power. The Court should grant an injunction, so the substantial legal questions presented on the merits will not be academic when reached, the agency already having done its worst to the citizens it governs."

Aristotle is the contract service provider for the PredictIt Market, which has operated under No-Action Relief CFTC 14-130 since 2014.

Requests for the full text of appeal documents and other press inquiries should be directed to [email protected].

AGFA HealthCare Positioned in the Leaders Category in the IDC MarketScape: U.S. Enterprise Medical Imaging 2022-2023 Vendor Assessment

0
AGFA HealthCare Positioned in the Leaders Category in the IDC MarketScape: U.S. Enterprise Medical Imaging 2022-2023 Vendor Assessment
GREENVILLE, S.C. - January 18, 2023 - (Newswire.com)

AGFA HealthCare is proud to announce that it has been named to the Leaders Category in the IDC MarketScape: U.S. Enterprise Medical Imaging 2022-2023 Vendor Assessment (doc #US48168021e, November 2022). According to the IDC MarketScape report, vendors should:

"Consider AGFA when you are a medium-sized to large healthcare provider looking for a platform-based solution with a differentiated level of intelligence that promotes a more collaborative medical imaging work environment."

AGFA HealthCare has been recognized by the IDC MarketScape for the following strengths:

Converged Platform
Enterprise Imaging Platform builds on AGFA's long-standing domain experience in medical imaging IT. The solution combines connected (cross) enterprise care, converged multispecialty support, an adaptable automated workflow, and disease-oriented augmented intelligence across the platform. The resulting capabilities (e.g., real-time collaboration and communication, multidisciplinary imaging for 15+ service lines, anytime-anywhere access, AI-enabled rules-based workflow automation, modular deployment) differentiate AGFA's solution. One customer said, "I took a trip a few times to RSNA and HIMSS, and AGFA was the only vendor at the time that seemed to understand the concept of enterprise imaging." This perception of AGFA having a robust, vendor-neutral platform with capabilities that can scale with modern-day requirements stood out in interviews.

Augmented Intelligence
AGFA's RUBEE for AI embeds "augmented intelligence" capabilities (advanced visualization, workflow orchestration, automated triage, smart hanging protocols, automated reporting, critical finding notifications, and specialty imaging packages) into the solution. Combining AI-driven automation with disease-oriented AI analytics helps customers generate more insight and practice better evidence-based medicine than traditional imaging workflows.

Ecosystem Integration
AGFA's XERO modules help enable enterprisewide collaboration between local healthcare professionals and external stakeholders. The XERO Exchange Network (XEN) allows image and report sharing at any time, which promotes regional and local collaboration between stakeholders (e.g., clinicians, patients, and other providers).

Furthermore, the solution is FHIR-enabled and has an open API ecosystem, which simplifies the ability for the vendor and its customers to integrate and improves interoperability. AGFA also holds many alliances and partnerships, which extend its ecosystem orientation even further, including with Microsoft Azure, AWS, Oracle, and Google, in addition to hardware OEMs (Dell, HPE, and Barco) and others (Philips Forcare, Qaelum, TOMTEC, Ascend, Cordiana, and MediReport).

About AGFA HealthCare

AGFA HealthCare is transforming the role of medical imaging into a high-impact, data-driven enterprise-wide information flow - supporting health professionals across the globe with secure and scalable imaging data management.

AGFA's preeminent product, the Enterprise Imaging Platform, creates an Imaging Health Record™, or IHR, to align with and fulfill a health system's EHR.  The IHR provides an unobstructed flow of patient imaging information to help clinicians achieve their clinical, operational, and business strategies.

AGFA HealthCare is a division of the AGFA-Gevaert Group and traded on Euronext Brussels (AGFB).

I Will Die On This Hill: Autistic Adults, Autism Parents, and the Children Who Deserve a Better World

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - January 18, 2023 - (Newswire.com)

Meghan Ashburn (Not An Autism Mom) of VA and Jules Edwards (Autistic, Typing) of MN co-authored a book titled I Will Die on This Hill: Autistic Adults, Autism Parents, and the Children Who Deserve a Better World, releasing Jan. 19 by Jessica Kingsley Publishing.

Ashburn is a former teacher and works as an educational consultant. Edwards is an Indigenous disability justice advocate and consultant. Edwards is newly appointed to serve on the National Institutes of Health Autism Centers of Excellence advisory board.

This bold new book promises a refreshing look at caring for autistic children, and provides dynamic insights into creating a better world for the estimated 1 in 44 children diagnosed with autism. With a focus on intersectionality, the book features eleven additional Autistic contributors throughout, including nonspeaking/AAC users and BIPOC Autistic advocates from around the world.

"I Will Die On This Hill is such a gift for all of us who have been clueless and way too speculative and assuming about autism," writes Marcie Alvis Walker, creator of Black Coffee with White Friends. "Ashburn and Edwards' honest and unsentimental book will make you a better human being and, therefore, a better neighbor, better educator, better family member to Autistic adults, Autism parents, and the children who need us all to do better."

Ashburn and Edwards' new release shares the authors' collective wisdom gained through years of parenting and advocating for disability justice. The authors were inspired to write the book they wish had been given when their children were first diagnosed. I Will Die On This Hill challenges the dominant narratives surrounding autism and invites readers to take action.

Dr. Mona Delahooke, author of Beyond Behaviors, writes, "This is the book I've been waiting for to recommend to parents and all childhood providers." Educators, professionals, physicians, and care workers will all gain new insights into supporting autistic children.

A book launch celebrating I Will Die On This Hill will be held Thursday evening, Jan. 19, 2022, at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Happy Head Launches the First All-in-One Hair Growth SuperCapsule With Finasteride, Minoxidil, and Vitamin D
Happy Head and its top dermatologists have developed an all-in-one daily capsule for hair loss

LOS ANGELES - January 18, 2023 - (Newswire.com)

Happy Head today announced the launch of its new hair-growing SuperCapsulesTM. Designed by top-of-the-line dermatologists and hair restoration experts, these capsules were created to aid hair growth for the over 80 million people struggling with hair loss. These SuperCapsulesTM are the first of their kind, infusing FDA-approved medicine, including Finasteride, Minoxidil, and Vitamin D, all in a single daily capsule.

Happy Head's SuperCapsuleTM is an all-in-one, daily capsule that is designed to make treating hair loss extremely easy.  It includes the strongest FDA-approved prescription medicine and essential hair vitamins in a single capsule. The main ingredients of the pill include Finasteride, Minoxidil, and Vitamin D, which are some of the strongest, clinically proven hair growth medicines on the market. Dermatologists say three to six months of daily SuperCapsule use will not only help regrow lost hair but also prevent further hair loss.

Hair loss is a huge problem that can cause intense psychological distress. Over two-thirds of men will experience hair loss by the age of 35, but it's not just men dealing with this problem. Over 40 percent of Americans who experience hair loss are women.

Because hair loss affects so many people, the cosmetic industry has been hard at work producing solutions to the problem of hair loss. Oral doses of Minoxidil and Finasteride have been flying off the shelves, so combining these ingredients in one convenient pill will provide customers with an even more powerful treatment.

"We are ecstatic to launch the first-of-its-kind SuperCapsuleTM pill, which is packed with some of the strongest hair-loss medications available," said Happy Head co-founder, Dr. Ben Behnam, M.D., FAAD. "The Minoxidil combined with Finasteride works to increase blood flow around hair follicles and stimulates the follicle to move into the growth phase of the hair growth cycle."

"There is a lot of emotional suffering when people are dealing with hair loss," said Happy Head CEO and co-founder Benjamin Katz. "At Happy Head, we hope to ease some of the psychological effects of hair loss and aim to give both men and women renewed confidence regarding their hair."

About
