What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?” When a beautiful stranger (Carrie Ann Moss) leads computer hacker Neo (Keanu Reeves) to a forbidding underworld, he discovers the shocking truth–the life he knows is the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence. Neo joins legendary and dangerous rebel warrior Morpheus (Lawrence Fishburne) in the battle to destroy the illusion of enslaving humanity.

You can check Fathom Events for participating box offices near your area. The Matrix 25th Anniversary Celebration is a fantastic way for fans who’ve never seen the film on the big screen to experience the magic for themselves. At the same time, old heads can dig their black trench out from the closet to relive the glory days. I remember seeing The Matrix in theaters, and boy, oh, boy, was it a ride! The Evilry: Brec Bassinger follows Final Destination 6 with a supernatural thriller

Brec Bassinger and Elena Kampouris are the stars of the supernatural coming-of-age thriller The Evilry, which starts filming next month

Brec Bassinger

Stargirl star Brec Bassinger has a lead role in the upcoming, long-awaited Final Destination sequel Final Destination: Bloodlines (a.k.a. Final Destination 6) and will also be seen in the true crime thriller The Man in the White Van when it reaches theatres in October. Now Deadline reports that she’s continuing to work in the horror / thriller genre, as she has signed on to star in the supernatural coming-of-age thriller The Evilry.

Alexander Garcia will be directing from his own script, with principal photography set to begin in Louisiana next month. Bassinger will be joined in the cast by Elena Kampouris (Children of the Corn), Dylan Walsh (Superman & Lois), Marissa Reyes (Ganymede), Evan Ross (The Loneliest Boy in the World), Tony Pierce (The Bodyguard), and Teri Polo (the Meet the Parents franchise).

Deadline wasn’t able to dig up much in the way of plot details, but they were able to find out that the story involves a visiting relative, played by Kampouris, who is harboring a dark secret.

Writer/director Garcia is producing The Evilry under his Multi-Valence Productions banner, alongside his producing partners Joanna Quezada, Mike Nease, and Chris Bradds. Anne Stimac, Fabian Alomar, David Bertolino, and Jason Baker are also producing, with Scott Huneryager of ZaZa Rev Motion Pictures and William Day Frank serving as executive producers. Garcia is just getting his writing/directing/producing career rolling. He’s currently in post-production on a skateboarding romance called Crushed It! and has multiple projects in pre-production: the skateboarding fantasy film Skate God, the mystery Gallatin 6, and the horror film He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not.

In addition to Stargirl, The Man in the White Van, and Final Destination: Bloodlines (we’re still waiting to hear a release date announcement for that one), Bassinger’s credits include Liar, Liar, Vampire; Bella and the Bulldogs, the School of Rock TV series, All Night, Killer Under the Bed, Chicken Girls, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Titans, and V.C. Andrews’ Dawn.

Our first reaction to Alien: Romulus hails Fede Alvarez’s film as an ultra-entertaining, gory addition to the franchise

Our first reaction to Alien: Romulus hails Fede Alvarez’s film as an ultra-entertaining, gory addition to the franchise

Fresh off of its first screening, Alien: Romulus is being heralded for its creature design, stunning third act and more.

Alien: Romulus, reactions

No doubt Alien: Romulus has been one of our most anticipated movies of 2024. Despite the overall tepid — or Alien 3-level — response to everything after James Cameron’s Aliens, the franchise maintains a strong fan base. So, how does Romulus rank amongst the other entries? Are we going to check it out on opening weekend or are we going to get away from her?

With Alien: Romulus having screened earlier this week ahead of its August 16th release, let’s check out some of the initial reactions from social media:

The high praise for Romulus is one thing but calling out a stellar third act in particular drums up even more excitement for the movie than there has been before. Indeed, it seems that it will be firing on all cylinders in that finale:

We pretty much knew that the creature designs would be a major draw, too, but it’s awesome to hear that this holds on the big screen. Obviously the Xenomorph designs are some of the most iconic creatures in film history thanks to H.R. Giger. Even in the worst of the Aliens franchise they are still a sight to behold; but now that we know Romulus looks to be ranking possibly in the top three of the series, director Fede Álvarez has a combo that looks to be just what the series needs. (Appropriately enough, Romulus is set between the events of 1979’s Alien and 1986’s Aliens.)

As for other industry reactions, Ridley Scott himself praised Alien: Romulus to the director after a private screening, saying, “Fede, what can I say? It’s f*cking great.” And this is the guy who directed the original Alien! Then again, he is also responsible for Covenant, so…

As for what else we can expect with Romulus, here is the plot: “The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful Alien franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

Now that the first reactions to Alien: Romulus are out, are you more excited for the movie? Are you surprised it has lived up to the hype?

Halloween and Ash vs. Evil Dead RetroRealms video games coming in October

’90s style arcade games RetroRealms: Halloween and RetroRealms: Ash vs. Evil Dead are coming from Boss Team Games and WayForward Technologies

Yesterday, we heard that Boss Team Games, a company that recently worked with Saber Interactive, Renaissance Pictures, STUDIOCANAL, MGM, and Lionsgate to bring fans Evil Dead: The Game, is working on two video games based on the 1978 classic Halloween. Now we know what one of those games is. A press release has revealed that Boss Team Games and WayForward Technologies, in association with Compass International Pictures, Forward Front, Lionsgate and STARZ, will be releasing a pair of ’90s arcade style games based on both Halloween and the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series on October 18th! These two games are how Boss Team Games and WayForward Technologies are launching their RetroRealms series of games for console and PC. A trailer for the games can be seen in the embed above.

A press release notes that the first two RetroRealms games will deliver a 16-bit-style platformer experience. Players take control of Michael Myers and other characters from the original 1978 film Halloween to slash through familiar settings and overcome the ultimate evil that has descended upon our world. Ash vs. Evil Dead fans can play as Ash Williams to battle through iconic locations inspired by the Starz original series while fighting Deadites and other familiar characters from the hit show. Developed by WayForward Technologies, the RetroRealms games let players traverse worlds and enter different realms to overcome challenges inspired by Halloween and Ash vs. Evil Dead. Combining retro visuals with modern mechanics, players venture between two overlapping worlds, with the ability to enter the nightmare infested Dark Realm at any time, which unlocks shortcuts, hidden pathways, and rewards for those brave enough to enter. The two RetroRealms titles, each sold separately, connect with each other to create an ever-expanding universe of popular characters that unlocks additional gameplay. The games can be played individually or, if both titles are purchased, new features can be accessed including taking characters from one game into the other. Players can also commemorate their achievements within the RetroRealms Arcade, a lovingly realized 3D gateway and tribute to arcade gaming that connects both RetroRealms titles, providing a single way to access every game in the series and to redeem in-game tickets, view leaderboards, and find other exclusive content.

Voldi Way, president of WayForward Technologies, provided the following statement: “Taking a modern horror franchise and creating the kind of retro gameplay that WayForward excels at has allowed us to create something that we know fans of Pixel Art games, Halloween, and Ash vs. Evil Dead alike will enjoy. We’ve designed a whole new kind of gameplay that is unique to the RetroRealms titles and highlights the over-the-top gore and special abilities of these characters.

Steve Harris, CEO of Boss Team Games, added, “Everyone at Boss Team Games are huge fans of horror and getting to work with these legendary properties is a dream come true. It has been an amazing experience collaborating with WayForward, and our licensors to create not one, but two, fast-paced ’90s arcade style games while remaining true to the original Halloween film and Ash vs. Evil Dead series. The trailer dropping today gives fans a taste of the gore-filled gameplay and fast-paced action and we can’t wait to show more!

Here’s some release information: RetroRealms: Halloween and RetroRealms: Ash vs. Evil Dead will be releasing simultaneously on Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam on October 18, 2024. Captain America: Brave New World: Tim Blake Nelson makes his MCU return in “a wonderful movie”

Captain America: Brave New World: Tim Blake Nelson makes his MCU return in “a wonderful movie”

Tim Blake Nelson reprises his role from The Incredible Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World, which he says will be a wonderful movie

Tim Blake Nelson The Leader

The next addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: Brave New World, is set to reach theatres on February 14, 2025 – and this Captain America adventure, which sees Anthony Mackie’s character Sam Wilson, formerly known as Falcon, carrying the shield now that his pal Steve Rogers is retired, has some strong connections to the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk. Not only does it feature the Incredible Hulk character Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross (with Harrison Ford taking over for the late William Hurt), but Liv Tyler is reprising the role of Ross’s daughter Betty and Tim Blake Nelson is back as Samuel Sterns, also known as The Leader. During a chat with Variety, Nelson confirmed that he was pleased to have the opportunity to play Sterns again, and said that, despite talk of superhero fatigue and some of last year’s entries having disappointing box office returns, you should never “count Marvel out.”

Addressing the fact that his character was missing from the MCU for a long time, Nelson said, “I deeply, deeply grieved over the prospect of not being able to come back into the MCU. All I wanted to do, as an actor, was to figure out what happens to this guy. 18 years later I got to do it and I wasn’t disappointed. It was a great challenge and I was guided beautifully by Julius Onah, who’s an indie director. These are real directors who want to work with real actors and give them opportunities to play outlandish characters. Marvel supports that.

Nelson went on to say that Marvel shouldn’t be counted out because the MCU “is an unheard-of phenomenon in movie history. Kevin Feige and his studio created dozens of connected movies that exist in one cinematic universe, to use their term. There’s no comparable achievement. So no – I don’t think it’s over. … I couldn’t respect Martin Scorsese more, he’s his own genre, but I disagree with him when he derides Marvel. I come down on the side of Marvel movies absolutely being cinema. They return us to being kids again. When they are really good, and they often are, you lose yourself in them. Are they profound? Are they Goodfellas and Miller’s Crossing, are they Bicycle Thieves, Schindler’s List or Kieślowski? No, but they aren’t aspiring to be. They are entertainment and there’s artistry involved in them.Deadpool & Wolverine just crossed the billion dollar mark at the box office, so it appears there is still life in the franchise after all.

Nelson noted that the Captain America films are “the most grounded” of the MCU franchises, comparing them to the Wolverine movie Logan. As for Captain America: Brave New World itself, he said, “This is going to be a wonderful movie.

Here’s the official information on Captain America: Brave New World, straight from Marvel: Anthony Mackie returns as the high-flying hero, who’s officially taken up the mantle of Captain America. Harrison Ford makes his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as newly-elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, a role originated by the late William Hurt. Ross and Sam have a bit of a history: In his previous role as Secretary of State, Ross was responsible for arresting Sam and his fellow Avengers during the events of Captain America: Civil War. Now as president, Ross is eager to work with Sam, hoping to make Captain America an official military position. But that tentative alliance is jeopardized when Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident, with friend and retired super-soldier Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) as the prime suspect. Sam’s investigation send him on a dangerous chase, and (leading to) a deadly showdown and a tease of the menacing Red Hulk. Danny Ramirez returns as former Air Force lieutenant Joaquin Torres, who’s picked up Sam’s old wings and taken on the role of Falcon. Tim Blake Nelson is also back as Samuel Sterns, AKA The Leader, appearing in the MCU for the first time since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. New to the cast is Shira Haas, who joins as Ruth Bat-Seraph. A former Black Widow, Ruth is now a high-ranking U.S. government official who has the trust of President Ross. Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, and Xosha Roquemore also star. The film is directed by Julius Onah and produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore. Louis D’Esposito and Charles Newirth serve as executive producers.

Are you excited to see Tim Blake Nelson reprise the role of Samuel Sterns / The Leader in Captain America: Brave New World? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Vince Vaughn reveals Jon Favreau wrote a fun script for Swingers 2 and there was almost a third film in their duo “trilogy”

Vince Vaughn reveals Jon Favreau wrote a fun script for Swingers 2 and there was almost a third film in their duo “trilogy”

Vaughn and Favreau nearly went back on the hunt for “pretty babies” in a sequel to their breakout hit. They also planned a follow-up to their re-team in Made.

Vince Vaughn reveals Jon Favreau wrote a fun script for Swingers 2 and there was almost a third film in their duo “trilogy”

Vince Vaughn is having a big month with a new AppleTV+ series and getting his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The comedic actor also recently made headlines when he appeared on Hot Ones and broke down why studios shy away from his brand of irreverent comedies. You can see Vaughn in a new comedy series from the creator of Ted Lasso and Shrinking Bill Lawrence called Bad Monkey. Our own Alex Maidy recently reviewed the show, saying, Bad Monkey will appeal to fans of shows like Burn Notice and Monk, but anyone expecting this series to be a comedy version of True Detective is looking in the wrong place.”

As Vaughn gets his new star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he speaks with Variety about some of the projects that never came to fruition. A couple of them involve his Swingers co-star, and current Marvel/Star Wars creative, Jon Favreau. Vaughn revealed that there was a script written for a Swingers sequel when he was asked about reprising roles, “I was always of the mindset of go make something new. But there was a script even for Swingers 2 that Jon wrote that was really fun, but we didn’t feel like it was the right thing to do. Obviously when you have a commercial hit, there’s always a race to get the sequel out as soon as possible, but I always felt like it had to have its own story. So, there were talks at different times.”

Although they never officially made a sequel to their breakout hit, Vaughn and Favreau would team up again for Made, which brought back similar comedic sensibilities to a different kind of plot. After Made, it was planned that Vaughn and Favreau would do one more film in their “buddy comedy trilogy” that was supposed to be set as a Western. Vaughn explained, “It was The Martial Revelation, about a Hasidic Jew who was a gunfighter in the Old West. It was comedic, but it was played straight like Swingers or Made. It was a great script, but we never found the timing to do it. But Made was fun — we went a little darker with it and an ending that wasn’t as optimistic, which, to me, was the fun of exploring that.”

Grotesquerie: Ryan Murphy’s new horror drama series premieres in September

The FX series Grotesquerie, a new horror drama from American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy, premieres next month

FX has announced that the horror drama series Grotesquerie, which comes from American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy, is set to premiere at 10 p.m. ET/PT on September 25th, and episodes will be available to stream on Hulu the day after they air on FX. The first season consists of 10 episodes, and will also be coming soon to Disney+ internationally. Along with the premiere information comes the unveiling of some key art, which can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Murphy wrote and created Grotesquerie with Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken. In the story they crafted, a series of heinous crimes have unsettled a small community. Detective Lois Tryon feels these crimes are eerily personal, as if someone—or something—is taunting her. At home, Lois grapples with a strained relationship with her daughter, a husband in long-term hospital care and her own inner demons. With no leads and unsure of where to turn, she accepts the help of Sister Megan, a nun and journalist with the Catholic Guardian. Sister Megan, with her own difficult past, has seen the worst of humanity, yet she still believes in its capacity for good. Lois, on the other hand, fears the world is succumbing to evil. As Lois and Sister Megan string together clues, they find themselves ensnared in a sinister web that only seems to raise more questions than answers.

The series stars Niecy Nash-Betts (Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story) as Detective Lois Tryon, Courtney B. Vance (Lovecraft Country) as Marshall Tryon, Lesley Manville (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris) as Nurse Redd, Micaela Diamond (tick, tick… BOOM!) as Sister Megan, Nicholas Alexander Chavez (General Hospital) as Father Charlie, Raven Goodwin (Single Black Female) as Merritt Tryon, and football player Travis Kelce in an unspecified role.

The episodes of Grotesquerie were directed by Max Winkler, Alexis Martin Woodall, Elegance Bratton, and Murphy. The show is executive produced by Murphy, Woodall, Baitz, Baken, Winkler, Nash-Betts, Vance, Peter Liguori, Nissa Diederich, Eric Kovtun, and Scott Robertson. It is produced by 20th Television.

SOULM8TE: David Rysdahl joins film set in the M3GAN universe

David Rysdahl has joined Lily Sullivan in the cast of the thriller SOULM8TE, which is set in the world of the M3GAN films

David Rysdahl

Last week, it was announced that Evil Dead Rise actress Lily Sullivan will play the lead in SOULM8TE, which is “a new movie in the M3GAN universe.” Now Deadline has broken the news that Sullivan is being joined in the cast by David Rysdahl, whose credits include Fargo season 5, The Family, No Exit, Black Mirror, Oppenheimer, and Booger.

As mentioned, SOULM8TE is set in the same world as the 2022 film M3GAN and its upcoming sequel M3GAN 2.0, which is aiming for a June 27, 2025 theatrical release. These films come from the recently merged companies Atomic Monster (headed up by Wan) and Blumhouse Productions (headed up by Jason Blum).

James Wan, his wife Ingrid Bisu, and Rafael Jordan (Salvage Marines) crafted the story for this one, with Jordan writing the first draft of the screenplay. Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother) is on board to direct the film and has done her own rewrite of the script. SOULM8TE will show us what happens when a man acquires an Artificially Intelligent android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife. In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, he inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate. Rysdahl is playing the man, while Sullivan plays the android.

James Wan and Jason Blum are producing SOULM8TE, while Michael Clear and Judson Scott of Atomic Monster serve as executive producers with with Ingrid Bisu. Alayna Glasthal is the executive leading the project for Atomic Monster.

Dolan previously provided the following statement: “Fundamentally, I view this film as an exploration of relationships and loneliness. Despite technological advances, there are enduring human truths we cannot escape, and I am looking forward to delving into those depths.” Wan added: “SOULM8TE is a thrilling and seductive addition to the M3GAN universe. We’re excited to partner with Kate to bring this story to life with her unique cinematic vision and point of view.

SOULM8TE is being described as a 1990s erotic thriller with a new technological twist.

TIFF 2024 adds Saturday Night, Megalopolis, On Swift Horses and more to their screening schedule

Deadline has just unveiled that the Toronto International Film Festival has added twenty more titles to their schedule, which brings their lineup of official selections to a total of 278 films. One of the bigger titles to be added is Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night, which depicts the evening of October 11, 1975, when “a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television forever. It is the true story of what happened behind the scenes that night in the moments leading up to the first broadcast of NBC’s Saturday Night Live.”

Another big feature that will be screened is the already-divisive but anticipated new film from Hollywood legend Francis Ford Coppola — Megalopolis. This will be the film’s North American premiere after its debut in Cannes already gave the movie the kind of buzz that people had expected to come from a mind as mad as Coppola’s. The film would also secure a distribution deal from Lionsgate after that premiere.

Twisters’ Daisy Edgar-Jones will also have a new film showcased at TIFF called On Swift Horses, which co-stars Jacob Elordi. Per Deadline, “The Daniel Minahan-directed movie follows a woman and her husband who are about to begin a bright new life, which is upended by the arrival of his brother. She embarks on a secret life, gambling on racehorses and discovering a love she never thought possible.” You can view the complete list of additions below, which also includes a special repeat screening of Damien Chazelle’s breakout film Whiplash.

Strange Darling: Willa Fitzgerald, Kyle Gallner cat & mouse thriller gets a new trailer and posters

Strange Darling: Willa Fitzgerald, Kyle Gallner cat & mouse thriller gets a new trailer and posters

A new trailer and posters have been unveiled for the cat & mouse thriller Strange Darling, starring Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner

Just before Halloween back in 2022, it was announced that Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner – who both have experience working in the Scream franchise, as Fitzgerald was in the Scream TV series and Gallner appeared in the 2022 Scream movie – were set to star in the “cat and mouse thriller” Strange Darling. Earlier this year, we learned that Magenta Light Studios will be giving Strange Darling a wide theatrical release in the United States on August 23rd – and with that date right around the corner, a new trailer for the film has arrived online, along with a pair of posters. The trailer can be seen in the embed above, and the posters can be found at the bottom of this article.

Reviews from audience members who saw the movie at Fantastic Fest last year indicate that it will work best if viewers have as little information as possible going in. We previously heard that it has something to do with a spontaneous hookup gone terribly wrong. The official synopsis reveals that nothing is what it seems when a twisted one-night stand spirals into a serial killer’s vicious murder spree

Strange Darling was written and directed by J.T. Mollner (Outlaws and Angels), and filming took place in Portland, Oregon. The film was produced by former Miramax CEO Bill Block, Chris Ivan Cevic, Steven Schneider, Roy Lee, and actor Giovanni Ribisi, who also served as the director of photography.

Fitzgerald and Gallner were joined in the cast by Oscar nominee Barbara Hershey (The Entity) and Emmy nominee Ed Begley Jr. (Better Call Saul). According to IMDb, the cast of the film also features Madisen Beaty (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Bianca A. Santos (Ouija), Steven Michael Quezada (Breaking Bad), Eugenia Kuzmina (Bad Moms), Denise Grayson (The Social Network), and Duke Mollner – who happens to be the director’s father, and also had a role in Outlaws and Angels.

Select theatres will be getting a Live Q&A Early Access Event on Wednesday, August 14th, which will feature a Q&A with Mollner, Ribisi, and Fitzgerald, moderated by Carla Gugino (The Fall of the House of Usher, The Haunting of Hill House). Tickets are available at strangedarlingfilm.com.

Are you looking forward to Strange Darling? Check out the new trailer and let us know by leaving a comment below – and take a look at these posters while you’re scrolling down:
