The Drew Carey Show is now available to stream for free — albeit with ads — on Plex, marking a return for the sitcom.

Cleveland rocks! And so does Plex because that streaming service is now offering The Drew Carey Show, marking the first time that the long-running sitcom has ever been available on such a format for free. So crack open a Buzz Beer and let’s get this binge-watch going!

Just this month — 20 years after its ninth and final season concluded — The Drew Carey Show finally got a proper streaming release for free. While you’ll have to sit through ads, just be happy that it’s here in the most widely available way since it aired on ABC. 

So what took so long? Like so many series, The Drew Carey Show, it comes down to music rights. This was something Carey himself had previously discussed, telling TV Insider the show was “not in syndication…because of music rights and stuff…We’re going to try to change that around and get it back out there.” Well, sure as a five o’clock world exists, that time has finally come. It should be noted that Warner Bros. only ever released the first season on DVD because of later music rights issues. Fans of the show will remember that it was “Moon Over Parma” — performed by Carey — that served as the show’s theme that season before switching over to “Five o’Clock World” and later, most famously, “Cleveland Rocks” as performed by The Presidents of the United States of America.

It’s easy to see why The Drew Carey Show would hit that music rights wall, as the show made great use of it throughout its run. Take a look at the official soundtrack and you see an array of songs from the likes of Iggy Pop, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, The Edgar Winter Group, and Joe Walsh — who had a recurring role as guitarist Ed — and you can see see just the surface of what they might have needed to clear to keep the show as intact as it could be.

Other great shows that have recently worked through their music rights issues and have found streaming homes include Homicide: Life on the Streets — which will be headed to Peacock later this month — and Moonlighting, which hit Hulu earlier this year.

The lead singer of the popular 80s band, Culture Club, is getting the big screen treatment as musical biopics pick up in activity.

Musical biopics have picked up in activity as of late. Recently, the Bob Marley movie One Love encapsulated a notable story from the Raggae icon’s life. This year has seen the release of Back to Black, which told the story of Amy Winehouse. And this Christmas will see the premiere of A Complete Unknown, which brings James Mangold back to the music world with Timothée Chalamet occupying the shoes of Bob Dylan. Not to mention, in the future, we’re getting a Bruce Springsteen film with Jeremy Allen White as The Boss, and Sam Mendes is bringing The Beatles’ story to theaters across four feature films.

Deadline is now reporting that a Boy George biopic is now in development over at TriStar. It’s still in the early stages, but the movie is set to be written by scribe J.C. Lee, who co-wrote the film adaptation of his own play Luce. Lee has also written for television with credits that include ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder, HBO’s Looking and Girls, and The Morning Show for Apple. The movie is set to be produced by Woman King producer Cathy Schulman, George’s manager Paul Kemsley, Jeremy M. Rosen and Kevin King Templeton, along with Primary Wave Music. Boy George will also be attached as an executive producer.

Lee will be adapting the script from Boy George’s autobiographies, Take It Like A Man, Straight and Karma and it is said to be focusing on the successful years of George’s group, Culture Club. Boy George can recently be seen in the Sky Original film Arthur’s Whisky starring Diane Keaton. And earlier this year, he teamed up with Ariana DeBose and Nile Rodgers for the song “Electric Energy,” which was the tie-in single with the Matthew Vaughn spy comedy Argylle. He had also taken the stage when he recently headlined the Broadway run of Moulin Rouge! The Musical.

Back when Jamie Foxx attempted to make his directorial debut, his movie was shelved due to culturally sensitive controversy.

Back in 2022, it was reported that Jamie Foxx’s directorial debut, All-Star Weekend, was shelved and the reason has pointed to the controversial casting of Robert Downey Jr. in a role that has only been described as “Mexican.” Foxx and Downey Jr. have collaborated in the past and Foxx has been supportive of Downey Jr. when criticisms surface of his satirical role in Tropic Thunder when he appears in black face. Foxx spoke of the shelving, “It’s been tough…with the lay of the land of comedy…We’re trying to break open those sensitive corners where people go back to laughing again.”

While Foxx has moved on to other projects, this past week, he has taken to his YouTube channel to “leak” a trailer for All-Star Weekend. His strategy brings to mind when Ryan Reynolds spent years trying to get a Deadpool movie off the ground and it didn’t see momentum until test footage of the highway fight scene had leaked and the overwhelming response got it greenlit in very short time.

Foxx posted the trailer with the hashtag “#leak” and wrote in the description, “The movie we couldn’t realease a while back…but I got a sneaky feeling we might have to drop this bitch.. the vibe is right…. UNOFFICIAL TRAILER… #leak What do you get when you combine 8 championships rings with 4 gold medals 3 Oscars and some of my homies ALL STAR WEEKEND! … stay tuned 2025. And congratulations to the whole USA Olympic basketball team! Let’s laugh”

It turns out Downey Jr.’s role in All-Star Weekend would have been more of a cameo, as he reportedly was only on set for four hours. The movie would have reunited Foxx and Downey Jr. after 2009’s The Soloist and 2010’s Due Date.

All-Star Weekend stars Foxx and Jeremy Piven as two basketball-obsessed truck drivers who score tickets to the NBA All-Star Game. (Foxx also stated he has another role as a “white, racist cop.”) It was originally intended to be released in 2018 around the time of the NBA All-Star Game and then again in 2019, before being shelved altogether.

Lionsgate has unveiled a new poster for the Halle Berry / Alexandre Aja horror film Never Let Go, which reaches theatres in September

UPDATE: Deadline reports that Lionsgate will be releasing Never Let Go a week earlier than previously expected, moving the release date up to September 20th.

About two years ago, we heard that Halle Berry had signed on to star in a horror movie called Mother Land, with genre regular Alexandre Aja on board to direct. Last year, the project went into production under a new title, Never Let Go. Earlier this year, we saw the unveiling of a teaser poster, which just featured text on a snakeskin background (you can take a look at the teaser poster HERE). Lionsgate is planning to give Never Let Go a theatrical release on September 27th (the date they previously had reserved for Saw XI, which has been pushed back a year) and now, with that date swiftly approaching, they have unveiled a new poster for the film, and you can check that one out at the bottom of this article.

Berry is joined in the cast by Percy Daggs IV (The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey) and Anthony B. Jenkins (Florida Man). Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine of 21 Laps (the production company behind Stranger Things and Free Guy, among other things) are producing the film with Aja. Berry is executive producing alongside Holly Jeter and 21 Laps’ Emily Morris. Chelsea Kujawa and Scott O’Brien are overseeing the project for Lionsgate.

Scripted by KC Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, Never Let Go follows a mother (Berry) and her fraternal twin sons (Daggs and Jenkins) who have been tormented by an evil spirit for years and are convinced to never let go of their family’s protective bond. But when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, their connection is severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival. Here’s a different version of the synopsis: As Evil takes over the world beyond their front doorstep, the only protection for a mother (Berry) and her twin sons is their house and their family’s protective bond. Needing to stay connected at all times – even tethering themselves with ropes – they cling to one another, urging each other to never let go. But when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, the ties that bind them together are severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival.

Aja’s previous directing credits include High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, Mirrors, Piranha 3D, Horns, The 9th Life of Louis Drax, Crawl, and Oxygen. We first heard about Never Let Go (then known as Mother Land) over three years ago, when it was announced that Mark Romanek had signed on to direct the film. There were eight years between Romanek’s first film One Hour Photo and his second feature Never Let Me Go, and it looked like this was going to be his third movie. Eleven years (at the time) after Never Let Me Go. But then Romanek dropped out, Aja signed on, and the project got a title that’s quite similar to the title of Romanek’s second feature. Now we continue to wait and see if Romanek is going to make a third feature.

Matt Damon says he’s been “really lucky” to avoid living under the same media scrutiny Ben Affleck has for the last thirty years.

Although the careers of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have arguably followed similar paths (I’ll leave it up to the comment section to decide who is the bigger star), Damon hasn’t had to face the same scrutiny from the media as Affleck.

Damon spoke on the Radio Times Podcast (via People) to say that he “can’t imagine” having all that attention over his head. “I’ve been really lucky in that way … especially when I look at Casey’s brother, Ben,” Damon said. “I can’t imagine living under that kind of scrutiny. And it’s been like that for 25 years and we’ve had parallel careers in a lot of ways and so I’m fortunate to have been kind of excused from that part of [it].“

As Affleck faced relentless tabloid attention thanks to his relationship(s) with Jennifer Lopez, Damon was spared as they found him boring. “That magazine culture that was so huge … 25 years ago, kind of ignored me,” Damon explained. “Right, like a guy who’s married, it’s so boring. What would sell those things were scandal and sex and all that stuff … and as long as you didn’t do any of that stuff it wasn’t really worth their time to wait to take your picture, and so I ended up kind of getting left alone.“

The actor added that he initially found fame to be a “bizarre, disorienting feeling” when all he wanted to do was work. “I just wanted to get to work and so I kind of hid for a few years while I got my bearings,” Damon said. “Luckily fell in love with someone who was not in the business who would tolerate that side of it and that really helped me.“

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have been working together more frequently in the last few years. Their next project is said to be RIP, a crime thriller written and directed by Joe Carnahan. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but they will also star in and produce through Artists Equity. It was previously reported that shooting will get underway this fall. They’re also set to produce a Hulk Hogan biopic with Gus Van Sant in talks to direct, and there have even been rumblings that the pair could star in the movie as well.

LaKeith Stanfield will be joining Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson in director Lynne Ramsay’s thriller Die, My Love

We found out last month that Silver Linings Playbook Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence and The Batman star Robert Pattinson have the lead roles in the thriller Die, My Love, which is coming our way from We Need to Talk About Kevin and You Were Never Really Here director Lynne Ramsay. Now Deadline reports that LaKeith Stanfield – whose credits include The Book of Clarence, Atlanta, Sorry to Bother You, Judas and the Black Messiah, The Harder They Fall, Haunted Mansion, Short Term 12, Knives Out, Selma, Uncut Gems, Death Note, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, The Changeling, War Machine, Straight Outta Compton, and Get Out (pictured above) – is in final negotiations to join Lawrence and Pattinson in the cast.

Scripted by Ramsay and Enda Walsh, Die, My Love is said to be “set in a remote forgotten rural area,” with the story centering on a mother who struggles to maintain her sanity as she battles with psychosis. We assume Lawrence will be playing the mother, but it hasn’t been revealed who Pattinson and Stanfield might be playing.

Jennifer Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi are producing the film through their Excellent Cadaver banner, alongside Martin Scorsese, Andrea Calderwood, and Black Label Media. Black Label Media is also financing the project.

Deadline notes that other upcoming projects for Stanfield, who earned an Oscar nomination for his supporting role in Judas and the Black Messiah, include sharing the screen with Mark Wahlberg, Dermot Mulroney, Tony Shalhoub, and Rosa Salazar in the Shane Black crime thriller Play Dirty, starring in an adaptation of the vampire hunter video game El Paso, Elsewhere, and lending his voice to the documentary Ernest Cole: Lost and Found. Meanwhile, Pattinson has Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, Parker Finn’s remake of Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession, and a sequel to The Batman coming our way, and Lawrence is working with A24 on a murder mystery called The Wives and an adaptation of the graphic novel Why Don’t You Love Me?

With Ramsay at the helm, Scorsese producing, and a strong cast being assembled, Die, My Love is shaping up to be quite promising.

Our Horror critic goes over some of the best that Fantasia had to offer this year, with some picks you’ll want to keep an eye out for.

Fantasia International Film Festival is always a highlight of the summer for the horror side of JoBlo. We’re always treated to films that absolutely blow us away. The 2024 edition of Fantasia is wrapping up this weekend and there were plenty of wonderful entries throughout the festival. While not all of them panned out (I’m sadly looking at you Witchboard), there were several that are likely to remain among the year’s best. If they release this year, that is. So let’s break down some of the best that Fantasia had to offer. If you’re interested in more information, each title has been reviewed. Read our coverage HERE!

Elijah Wood stars in this fantastic story about a distant father taking his daughter on an adventure to help better their position in life. It gets dark at points but otherwise has that great Goonies tone, where you just want to crawl into the screen and join in on the fun. This fits in with other great New Zealand cinema like Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Boy. While this is pretty far from horror, it’s still a great film that will make you feel like a kid again.

One of the year’s most anticipated proved to be one of the best. Following a girl and her family as they move to the German mountains for her dad’s work, strange occurrences start happening. Delightfully weird and mysterious, Cuckoo is further proof that Hunter Schafer is an actress to keep an eye on. She really carries the film, although Dan Stevens’ performance is delightfully wacky. While I predict this movies weirdness causing division, I was 100% on board for it. I can’t wait to see what others think of it when it releases on August 8th.

Easily my favorite of the Adams Family filmography, Hell Hole is so much fun from start to finish. Following an American fracking crew in Serbia, they dig up a long hibernating monster. The monster is parasitic in nature and transfers from body to body in very gory ways. Intensely violent with an energetic score, there are some really entertaining performances as the situation gets more and more dire.

I think most of us have been curious as to what Kit Harrington would settle in doing post-Game of Thrones. And I’ve always felt like there are few better showcases for an actor than playing a werewolf. The inner turmoil and then intense physical change allows for a diverse performance. This follows a family in the English countryside who have a dark secret. The mother tries to shield the daughter from her father’s ways but curiosity gets the better of her and she seeks out answers. Filled with wonderful performances (with Caoilinn Springall being a particular highlight), this werewolf film has parallels with alcoholism, allowing it to blend fantasy with reality in a truthful way.

Actor and ever-present gem Jeff Goldblum has one of the most distinct and unique voices in the business, with a pattern that is jazzy and riffy and a cadence that is both curious and sexual. So who better than to sell the sleekest products out there? As it turns out, Jeff Goldblum did indeed serve as spokesman for Apple in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, and it may have never happened without Steve Jobs himself.

Jeff Goldblum once revealed that he was hand-picked by Apple’s co-founder for the ad gig, even though he had no idea who he was talking to at the time. “Steve Jobs called me up a few decades ago to be the voice of Apple. That was early on, and I did not know it was Steve Jobs.” With that, Goldblum would get to work selling MacIntoshes, iMacs and more to the masses. In one ad from 1999, Goldblum remarks that only 20% of people were on the internet at that time. Today, it’s estimated that around 5.4 billion people across the world are on the web – that’s close to 70%. Now, we’re not saying that Jeff Goldblum helped bump those numbers up beginning at the turn of the century, but…he totally did.

When we think “voice of Apple”, another name comes to mind other than Jeff Goldblum: Siri. And while it would be lovely to hear the gorgeous pipes of Goldblum come out of our phones, there is no evidence that Steve Jobs anticipated that technology (at least in that form) at the time. So, no, it’s extremely unlikely he wanted Goldblum in that particular role. That said, the idea of saying, “Jeff Goldblum, wake me up at 8 a.m.” sure is titillating. For what it’s worth, the original voice of Siri was Susan Bennett, 

Outside of Apple, Jeff Goldlbum has also been the spokesman for everything from beer to cars to apartments to international lotteries. But his tenure with the software giant remains his most popular pitch work – and was hopefully more likely to get you to buy their products than whatever this was supposed to be.

UCLA refused to let Laura Dern take time off to work on David Lynch’s Blue Velvet, so she dropped out in her first week.

She wore bluuueeeee velvettttt – but she didn’t wear a cap and gown along with it. Laura Dern spent a whopping two days at UCLA before dropping out to play Sandy Williams in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet. Just imagine how much Pabst Blue Ribbon she missed out on in the dorm!

Appearing on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, Laura Dern remembered being excited to land the part in Blue Velvet but running into issues with the university, who rebuked her request to take time off to work on the film. Dern insisted she would do all the required work, which the department head was reluctant to approve. “I said, ‘I have this opportunity and he said, ‘Well, I’ll look at the script if you want to give me the script, but, you know, you’re not going to get a leave of absence. It’s not going to happen. It’s not a medical emergency.’” The next day, UCLA officially refused her request, telling her to leave college over a script like Blue Velvet’s was “insane.”

Laura Dern added, “I will just end by saying after my two days, today, if you want to get a masters in film at that school, when you write a thesis there are three movies you are required to study. And you know what one of them is,” she said, referring to the 1986 film. Whether this is true or not we have yet to confirm, but it certainly has a better shot than Grizzly II: Revenge.

Even prior to Blue Velvet, Laura Dern had already been getting her movie and TV career going – no doubt in part to being the daughter of Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, her first movie being a small bit in Ladd’s White Lightning – but that she still wanted to pursue other interests, studying psychology and journalism, is quite admirable. And it’s apparently a good thing that UCLA was so finicky because Blue Velvet made her career, even earning her an Independent Spirit Award nomination. Dern would go on to work with Lynch on Wild at Heart, Inland Empire and Twin Peaks: The Return.

Today, Blue Velvet stands as one of the greatest films ever; it still divides viewers in its depictions of violence and abuse, but it is an enigmatic work from one of our most unique visionaries.

James Cameron rebuffed Harvey Weinstein at the ’98 Academy Awards, resulting in the director almost walloping the producer with an Oscar.

So many people in Hollywood knew about industry warthog Harvey Weinstein’s disgusting, illegal behavior behind the scenes but so few actually confronted him about it. There is the famous story of Brad Pitt defending Gwyneth Paltrow when she was coming up but those are few and far between. But only one man has ever come close to bashing Harvey Weinstein over the head with an Oscar statue he so desperately wanted: the King of the World himself that year, James Cameron.

On Oscar night 1998, James Cameron and Harvey Weinstein found themselves competing at the Shrine Auditorium, with the director there with odds-on favorite Titanic and Weinstein supporting the Miramax-supported Good Will Hunting. Titanic got off to the strong start it would carry for the rest of the night, while Good Will Hunting would nab only two statues. With Titanic having just won Best Editing, Cameron was about to give Weinstein an iceberg-sized ljump on his head. “So I’m on my way back to my seat with my editing Oscar, and this guy’s jumping up to introduce himself, saying, ‘If you want to come to work at a place that’s a friend of the artist, a friend of the filmmaker’ — he’s holding his hand out, and I just blew him off. It was just an ugly little moment.”

So what caused the rift between James Cameron and Harvey Weinstein? Even though Cameron hadn’t yet had firsthand issues with the mega-producer, he did hear how he treated his friend Guillermo del Toro on Mimic. “He had told me the horrible shit that Miramax pulled on him when he made his first American commercial film, Mimic, and they fired him. The actors, led by Mira Sorvino, kind of revolted and wouldn’t work until they brought him back. Then, when the film was successful and well regarded, Harvey sort of jumped up to take praise for the movie.”

As James Cameron further explained, he just about used his very first Oscar to give Harvey Weinstein a good will blunting. “I did defend Guillermo and I called Harvey on his bullsh*t, and then he got very loud and verbally abusive and almost potentially physically violent. And he was about to get clocked by an Oscar — which would’ve been highly appropriate, I think. But I wasn’t thinking about it in those terms; it was just the weapon at hand. The hysterical thing about the whole moment was people around us were saying, ‘Not here! Not here!’ It was kind of like, ‘It’s OK if you boys fight out in the alley, but don’t do it here at the Academy Awards!’”

Harvey Weinstein’s bullying and faux-ass kissing was notorious, and if you were in with him you were in — until you pissed him off, so it’s refreshing to see James Cameron not even entertain the idea of being an ally. Loyalty can go a long way in Hollywood, so good on Cameron, whose career has already outlasted Weinstein’s.
