Daddio Review

Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson star in this dialogue-driven two hander about a loudmouth cabbie and his passenger.

PLOT: A woman (Dakota Johnson) and a talkative cabbie (Sean Penn) have a deep conversation while stuck in an endless New York traffic jam.

REVIEW: A few months ago, Dakota Johnson suffered the worst reviews of her career for her superhero flop Madame Web. She’s been open about how she’ll never do anything like that again due to how badly she felt burned by its reception, doubling down on her commitment to indie fare. Indeed, if you watch Dakota Johnson in Daddio, a movie she co-produced, you can see how effective she can be if given material that suits her.

Written and directed by Christy Hall, Daddio is a two-hander one that takes place entirely in a cab travelling from JFK International Airport to an apartment in Manhattan. The film revolves around Johnson’s unnamed passenger, billed as “girlie,” a young woman returning to New York after a trip to see her sister. She stumbles into a cab being driven by Clark (Sean Penn), an extremely talkative cabbie who’s been around the block a few times. When stuck in a traffic jam, the two, out of boredom, start to open up to each other about their lives.

Hall’s film is almost like a play in that it’s essentially just a ninety-minute dialogue scene. It takes a while to settle into its rhythm, but Daddio becomes a fairly compelling slice of life once it starts going. Johnson’s character is at a crossroads in her life, with her returning to Manhattan and her married lover, but unsure of the path she wants to follow. While speaking with Clark, she’s still engaging with her older lover, who’s drunk, texting her and asking for erotic photos, which she obliges him with.

daddio movie review

Penn has his best role in years as Clark. While plain-spoken, he seems through “girlie’s” polished veneer, getting her to admit the kind of relationship she’s in, which he knows all about. As he explains to her, he’s been married twice and has lots of experience having affairs outside of marriage. He tries to explain to her why, even if she thinks she loves her married boyfriend, the man will never leave his wife and ultimately views her as a sexual plaything. All this is confirmed by the messages he sends her over and over.

What’s interesting about Hall’s film is how it takes pains not to be overly judgmental. While it’s made clear that Johnson’s character seems toying with the notion of breaking up a marriage, she’s still a good person motivated by love (or at least what she thinks is love). Penn’s Clark initially comes off as a misogynistic loudmouth, but as the film goes on, we start to realize that underneath all of his bluster, there’s a lot of hard-earned wisdom there, which he’s not shy about doling out. Our protagonists are ultimately good, kind people, with Penn rarely this warm and affable on-screen.

Daddio made its debut at TIFF in the fall and was well-received, with Hall moving on to write the adaptation of the highly anticipated Blake Lively film It Ends With Us. In Daddio, she shows an incisive view of human nature, with her warts-and-all portrait of these two humans making a brief, fleeting connection that is surprisingly life-affirming. Most importantly, the connection feels authentic, and neither is shown to be a sage know-it-all. They’re simply two people stuck together for ninety minutes who take the opportunity to have a meaningful conversation. By the time the credits roll, neither of them seems on the verge of changing their lives, but they both at least met someone else who empathizes with them, which, at times, can be something we all need. Daddio isn’t the kind of movie that will blow you away, but it is food for thought and a surprisingly compelling two-hander for two performers often pigeonholed into specific roles.

Ryan Coogler teams with Mattson Tomlin for A Vicious Circle adaptation described as John Wick meets Looper

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler teams with Mattson Tomlin for A Vicious Circle adaptation about time-travelling assassins.

THR reports that Universal Pictures has snagged the rights to A Vicious Circle, a graphic novel series published by BOOM! Studios created by Mattson Tomlin and Lee Bermejo. Ryan Coogler is on board to produce A Vicious Circle via his Proximity Media banner, with Tomlin set to write the screenplay.

A Vicious Circle is a “two-hander action thriller about assassins from the future hunting each other through time” which is being described as John Wick meets Looper. Sounds like fun to me.

If you’d like more detail, the graphic novel synopsis has you covered: “Shawn Thacker is a trained assassin from the future who seeks revenge on the only other man with his affliction—each life they take forces them both to involuntarily travel between vastly different past and future eras. Spanning from 22nd century Tokyo to 1950s New Orleans to the Cretaceous Era and beyond, the two mortal rivals are locked in a battle of wills that spans millions of years, all to alter the course of history.

In a statement, A Vicious Circle co-creator Mattson Tomlin said: “Building this world and characters with my partner Lee Bermejo and our friends at BOOM! Studios has been one of my favorite creative experiences to date. It’s rare to be given so much freedom to say what you want to say and to then see Lee bring the world to life so vividly has been a literal mindblower. I’m so psyched to have the chance to watch our characters leap into yet another reality and a whole new medium with a similar mind-bending approach with the help of our friends at Universal and the wizards at Proximity.

Co-creator and artist Lee Bermejo added: “Collaborating with an amazing writer and partner like Mattson Tomlin on A Vicious Circle and being allowed by BOOM! Studios to bring that vision to a reality has been one of the most creatively and personally fulfilling of my career thus far. We wanted to create a project that would take viewers on an experience they’d never seen before, and now I’m beyond thrilled to see it take on new life with the visionary folks at Proximity at a fantastic home like Universal.

Ryan Coogler is currently in production on his untitled supernatural thriller starring Michael B. Jordan for Warner Bros., which is rumoured to be a period thriller involving vampires. In addition to Jordan, the film is also set to star Delroy Lindo, Jack O’Connell, Hailee Steinfeld and more. It’s set for a March 7, 2025 release.

Martin Mull, comic actor known for Clue, Roseanne, has died at 80

Martin Mull, the comic actor known for his roles in Clue, Roseanne, Arrested Development, and more, has died at the age of 80.

We have sad news to report today. It has been announced that Martin Mull, the hugely talented comedian and actor known for playing Colonel Mustard in Clue, Leon Carp in Roseanne, Gene Parmesan in Arrested Development, and more, has died at the age of 80.

The news was revealed by Martin’s daughter Maggie on Instagram. “I am heartbroken to share that my father passed away at home on June 27th, after a valiant fight against a long illness,” Maggie wrote. “He was known for excelling at every creative discipline imaginable and also for doing Red Roof Inn commercials. He would find that joke funny. He was never not funny. My dad will be deeply missed by his wife and daughter, by his friends and coworkers, by fellow artists and comedians and musicians, and—the sign of a truly exceptional person—by many, many dogs. I loved him tremendously.

Mull got his start as a songwriter, penning A Girl Named Johnny Cash for singer Jane Morgan. He later set off on his own as a musical comedian before making the leap to acting. He quickly found fame as Garth Gimble in Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, but the wife-beating character was not one he enjoyed playing.

I thought they hired me because I was a comedian,” Mull said in 2014. “I was kind of surprised when all of a sudden we got all this Virginia Woolfish high drama. I didn’t like the character at all. I don’t care for violence, and wife beating is particularly repugnant to me, so it was quite hard.” He also played Barth Gimble, Garth’s twin brother, in the talk show parodies Fernwood 2 Night and America 2 Night alongside Fred Willard, who played his sidekick and announcer.

He went on to appear in TV shows such as The Golden Girls, The Larry Sanders Show, Just Shoot Me!, The Ellen Show, Reba, Reno 911, The War at Home, Two and a Half Men, ‘Til Death, Dads, Community, Life in Pieces, The Ranch, The Cool Kids, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and more. He also plays Willard Kraft in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the principal of Westbridge High and was nominated for an Emmy for his guest-starring role in HBO’s Veep. Mull was also a prolific voice actor, lending his talents to The Simpsons, Family Guy, The Wild Thornberrys, Dexter’s Laboratory, Danny Phantom, American Dad!, and Bob’s Burgers.

Mull also appeared in movies such as FM, Serial, Mr. Mom, Cutting Class, Ski Patrol, Mrs. Doubtfire, How the West Was Fun, Jingle All the Way, 101 Dalmatians, Richie Rich’s Christmas Wish, A Futile and Stupid Gesture, and more.

Our thoughts go out to Martin Mull’s family and friends. He was such a unique and underrated talent and will be greatly missed.

The Best Movies of 2024 (So Far…)

The Best Movies of 2024 (So Far…)

With the year half over, we take a look at some of the best movies of 2024 (so far)…

And just like that, 2024 is already half over. Crazy, isn’t it? It feels like Christmas was just a minute ago, but here we are in the middle of summertime. Before we know it, the fall festivals will open up, the awards race will begin, and people will start debating the year’s best movies.

But here’s the thing – whenever people start talking about the best movies of the year, they always neglect all of the films that came out in the first half of the year. Studios know this, which is why high-profile, prestigious movies always bow in the fourth quarter of the year. So, to give these movies a bit of a spotlight, we here at JoBlo have decided to list the 10 best movies of 2024…so far (in no particular order).

Dune 3

Dune: Part 2:

Denis Villeneuve’s epic conclusion to his two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel was everything we hoped it would be. While the first film suffered because it came out at the height of the pandemic and was mostly viewed on HBO Max, audiences could finally see Arrakis in all its glory on the HUGE IMAX screen as Villeneuve always intended. This movie proved audiences are hungry for ambitious fare. With this and Wonka both dominating the box office in early 2024, it established Timothee Chalamet as one of the biggest stars of his generation.

The Bikeriders:

Dune: Part 2 also gave co-star Austin Butler his first great post-Elvis role, with him losing any trace of the King as the snarling villain Feyd-Rautha (his lingering Elvis mannerisms marred his role on Apple TV’s Masters of the Air). Jeff Nichols’s The Bikeriders is another great post-Elvis role for the actor, with him affecting a kind of James Dean cool as an iconic member of an early biker gang. That said, he’s only a small part of the show here, with Tom Hardy even better as the gang’s Brando-esque leader, while Jodie Comer gives the movie some heart. This is a terrific movie.

the beekeeper

The Beekeeper:

I’m a sucker for a good action movie. Truthfully, I thought Doug Liman’s Road House remake would be 2024’s first great one, but I was wrong. It was decent, but another movie financed by Amazon-MGM was even better, David Ayer’s The Beekeeper. I’ve often been critical about how Jason Statham’s action heroes are a little too invulnerable. Still, it can’t be denied that he’s cast perfectly to type as the vigilante hero of this demented action epic. Ayer turned what could have been just a fun B-movie into an action thrill-ride that puts many action flicks with quadruple the budgets to shame.

The horror film Late Night With the Devil returns to theatres with a special introduction and a Q&A with David Dastmalchian and Kevin Smith

Late Night With the Devil:

This was an unexpected smash hit for IFC/ Shudder earlier this year. A low-fi, the seventies-set horror flick, Late Night With the Devil, gives star David Dastmalchian a tailor-made role as a schlocky seventies host who makes the mistake of inviting the devil into his studio and pays a hefty price. The less you go in knowing about this one, the better.

Civil War

Civil War:

A24’s biggest-budget movie ever grows more prescient by the day, with the U.S seemingly more divided than ever. Alex Garland’s film is an urgent call for both sides to find some common ground. More than that, it also showcases Kirsten Dunst in a career-best performance as a veteran photojournalist whose dormant conscience may prove to be her ultimate undoing.

Furiosa, box office, Mad Max: The Wasteland

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga:

The fact that George Miller’s epic prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road wasn’t a blockbuster will be one of the biggest cinematic tragedies of the year. We’ll never get to see his planned Mad Max: The Wasteland, while audiences missed out on one of the most dazzling action epics of the year, boasting iconic performances from Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and Tom Burke. What a damn shame.

The Dead Don't Hurt, trailer, Viggo Mortensen

The Dead Don’t Hurt:

While Kevin Costner’s Horizon has gotten a lot of press, many overlooked another great old-school western that came out this year: Viggo Mortensen’s The Dead Don’t Hurt. Mortensen himself stars opposite Vicky Krieps in this romantic, touching old-school oater, which deserved a better theatrical release given that it barely played in most markets.

Bad Boys 5

Bad Boys: Ride or Die:

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence can still pull in quite the crowd with the fourth instalment of the enduring series just about as big of a hit as the last film in the saga. It’s a big comeback role for Smith (in the wake of the Oscar slap) while it also re-establishes directors Adil & Bilall as up-and-comers to watch in the wake of the Batgirl disaster.

Hit Man Netflix

Hit Man:

Richard Linklater’s semi-fact-based Hit Man was the darling of the festival circuit last fall, with many claiming it offered Glen Powell his first truly great leading role. While it did fine on Netflix, it’s kind of sad to see how quickly the movie fell out of the cultural zeitgeist once it got released. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a real gem.

Interview: Game of Thrones' Jack Gleeson talks about working on the Liam Neeson action thriller In the Land of Saints and Sinners

In the Land of Saints and Sinners:

Of the dozens of routine Liam Neeson action movies that have come out over the last few years, it’s ironic that the one truly great one barely made a dent at the box office. Neeson has one of his best roles in years in Robert Lorenz’s Ireland set hitman drama. However, it can’t be denied that co-star Jack Gleeson of Game of Thrones utterly walks away with the movie as an initially crazed associate of Neeson’s who proves to have a lot of depth and a noble streak. This movie is a true gem.

Ronda Rousey pins down first graphic novel, Expect the Unexpected

Ronda Rousey pins down first graphic novel, Expect the Unexpected

Ronda Rousey is stepping into the ring of the graphic novel world, writing her first one with illustrations by a DC/Marvel alum.

WWE champion, UFC Hall of Famer…graphic novelist? Ronda Rousey has completed writing her first graphic novel, Expect the Unexpected, marking her first foray into the comic world.

In Expect the Unexpected, a hitwoman who goes by “Mom” wears a fake baby bump as part of her gimmick. But when she actually becomes pregnant after sleeping with a target, she finds herself challenged with dealing with both her pregnancy and her job, all with bounties on her head.

The adventures of “Mom” partly stem from experiences that Ronda Rousey – who became a mother in 2021 – has undergone…presumably without the whole hired assassin thing. While Rousey wrote the graphic novel, Mike Deodato, Jr. – a contributor to DC, Marvel and Dark Horse – handled the artwork.

On the origins of Expect the Unexpected, Ronda Rousey said, “The whole story is just the story of me and my husband. Our journey trying to get pregnant, having a baby, our becoming parents …When you actually come to that realization and live up to it is I think a process that isn’t really covered in anything I’ve really seen so far. That was kind of a personal journey that was really important to us.”

Ronda Rousey told the Los Angeles Times that she planned for Expect the Unexpected to be written as a screenplay (a separate endeavor than a previously reported one), with the idea for herself to star. But Rousey has developed a love for graphic novels over time. “I originally intended on this being a movie, but I really think that this is the way it was always meant to be, as a graphic novel. Maybe that’s the path that I was meant for more, to be a graphic novelist.” Even still, she wouldn’t mind seeing it adapted for the big screen.

Ronda Rousey 2

So when can we expect the unexpected? AWA Studios has a BackerKit campaign for the graphic novel officially launching on July 25th, with chances for donators to get hand-signed copies and even being depicted in the artwork having our ass handed to you by Ronda Rousey herself.

Ronda Rousey joins the likes of other former pro wrestlers like The Ultimate Warrior and Jerry “The King” Lawler who have contributed stories or artwork to the comic form.

Box Office: Quiet Place Day One on track for franchise-best opening; neck-in-neck with Inside Out 2

Box Office: Quiet Place Day One on track for franchise-best opening; neck-in-neck with Inside Out 2

A Quiet Place: Day One is on track for a franchise-best opening and could potentially unseat Inside Out 2 as this week’s box office champ.

UPDATE: It looks like A Quiet Place: Day One is now heading towards a franchise-best opening, with Deadline’s latest estimates predicting the film will open in the $53 million range. That’s about $8 million ahead of industry predictions. The prequel could take the top spot from Inside Out 2, with the two movies neck-in-neck at the box office. Meanwhile, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: Chapter 1 may not crack $12 million after all, with it now looking to be on track for an $11 million weekend. Jeff Nichols’s The Bikeriders also seems to be losing a huge chunk of its audience, with it looking like the film will fall over 65% to a $3 million plus weekend. Bummer. It’s terrible to see such a good movie underperform, but hopefully, adult audiences will turn out for the matinees this weekend and give it a better-than-expected result.

ORIGINAL POST:

Following last night’s previews, A Quiet Place: Day One looks like it will open in about the same range as the last two movies in the series. Based on Friday’s early numbers, Deadline is forecasting a $48 million weekend, which is pretty close to what we predicted earlier this week. As solid a number as that is, the movie will still only open in second place, with box office juggernaut Inside Out 2 on track for a mighty $60 million weekend.

So how is Kevin Costner’s passion project, Horizon, faring? Currently, it seems to be opening exactly in line with expectations, with it looking at a final total in the $12-13 million range. However, it should be noted that this adult-skewing western isn’t expected to perform like a normal film, with the older audience it appeals to generally either attending weekend matinees or waiting until later in the run. In all fairness to Costner’s ambitious undertaking, we won’t really be able to tell whether or not it’s a success or a financial failure until the second weekend (as someone who liked it – I hope it rallies).

Meanwhile, Bad Boys: Ride or Die should come in right behind Horizon, with a forecasted $11 million weekend. No word yet on how last weekend’s The Bikeriders is holding up, but in a surprise result, the Telugu-language epic, Kalki 2898 AD, one of the biggest-budget movies in India’s history, is closing in on a big fifth place finish, with a $6.5 million total. It did blockbuster business with it making a mighty $5.5 million on only 900 screens.

What are you planning to see this weekend? Let us know in the comments!

Eddie Murphy reflects on David Spade’s “falling star” joke

Eddie Murphy reflects on David Spade’s “falling star” joke

Eddie Murphy found the joke David Spade made on SNL about his failing career to be “personal” and “racist.”

Look, children, it’s a falling star! And he’s pretty pissed off, too! By the time 1995 rolled around, Eddie Murphy had undoubtedly taken a tumble: Another 48 Hrs. captured none of the magic of the original, Boomerang flew back in his face, Beverly Hills Cop III killed the franchise, and Vampire in Brooklyn sucked the life out of the box office. This was all David Spade needed for one infamous joke he did on Saturday Night Live, targeting Murphy on his “Hollywood Minute” segment.

While Eddie Murphy and David Spade have patched things up, the former – who was an SNL cast member from 1980-1984 (three years before Spade was a skater dude in Police Academy 4) – thought his alumni status should have meant more. As he told The New York Times, “He showed a picture of me, and he said, ‘Hey, everybody, catch a falling star.’ It was like: Wait, hold on. This is Saturday Night Live. I’m the biggest thing that ever came off that show. The show would have been off the air if I didn’t go back on the show, and now you got somebody from the cast making a crack about my career? And I know that he can’t just say that. A joke has to go through these channels. So the producers thought it was OK to say that. And all the people that have been on that show, you’ve never heard nobody make no joke about anybody’s career. Most people that get off that show, they don’t go on and have these amazing careers.”

Murphy added that Spade’s dig – one of many one-liners he would deliver on his celebrity-skewering segment – went too far. “It was personal. It was like, ‘Yo, how could you do that?’ My career? Really? A joke about my career? So I thought that was a cheap shot. And it was kind of, I thought — I felt it was racist.” On this final matter, Murphy aligned Spade’s “Hollywood Minute” bit with many in the press around that time, saying they promoted racism towards him in their publications.

Murphy actually confronted Spade on the phone the week after the incident, but the feud lasted for decades. As a result of Spade’s joke, Murphy avoided Saturday Night Live even longer than he already had, only returning to Studio 8H in 2019 for a hosting stint.

Was David Spade’s Eddie Murphy joke warranted or did he take it too far? Do you think Murphy overreacted? Give us your take below!

Scarface: Universal once tried to slap a rap soundtrack on the movie until De Palma blocked it

Scarface: Universal once tried to slap a rap soundtrack on the movie until De Palma blocked it

While Giorgio Moroder’s soundtrack to the 1983 crime epic Scarface is considered a classic, Universal once tried to replace it with hip-hop.

While far from a smash hit in its original 1983 theatrical release, Brian De Palma’s Scarface, over time, became seen as a classic. The rise of home video played a big role, with it having an outsized impact on hip hop artists, with many (MANY) songs sampling the soundtrack/score and dialogue. In fact, its reputation in the rap community was so strong that, around the time of its 20th anniversary, Universal Pictures, in association with Def Jam Records, attempted to redo the movie’s soundtrack with hip hop.

According to a new book, “The World is Yours: The Story of Scarface,” by Glenn Kenny, star Al Pacino and producer Martin Bergman actually weren’t opposed to the idea of dropping Giorgio Moroder’s classic score (and songs) and replacing it with hip hop, only for Brian De Palma to (thankfully) put the kibosh on the whole deal. As excerpted in the book (buy it here), De Palma said, “No one changes the scores on movies by Marty Scorsese, John Ford, David Lean. If this is the ‘masterpiece’ you say, leave it alone. I fought them tooth and nail and was the odd man out; not an unusual place for me. I have final cut, so that stopped them dead.”

While Def Jam did indeed put out a compilation album of hip-hop tracks inspired by the film, the original cut of the movie was left alone. However, in an interview with The Talks from a few years back, De Palma says Universal “continually” wanted to change the soundtrack, saying, “They’re very unhappy with me because they could obviously make a tremendous amount of money, but I said, “That score’s not being changed.”

One has to admire De Palma’s tenacity here, as a new score would, in the opinion of many of the film’s fans, be something akin to vandalism. Given that the movie takes place in early 1980’s Miami, a contemporary hip-hop score would be out of place, with Moroder’s music, dated as it is, very evocative of the era and the film’s setting.

Do you think a director less committed than De Palma would have stuck to his guns the way he has? Let us know in the comments!

The Killer: First-look images at John Woo’s remake of his own iconic action movie

Check out three first look images of John Woo’s upcoming remake of his own iconic action movie, The Killer.

IGN got the exclusive first look at The Killer, John Woo’s upcoming remake of his own 1989 action classic. This new version stars Nathalie Emmanuel as Zee, a mysterious assassin known as the Queen of the Dead. When she refuses to kill a young blind woman (Diana Silvers) on the orders of her handler, Finn (Sam Worthington), her world implodes, and she finds herself on the run, attracting the attention of police investigator Sy (Omar Sy).

You can check out three first-look images from The Killer below.

The Killer
The Killer
The Killer

[Zee] has a very specific code in how she likes to do things,” Emmanuel told IGN. “And when she’s told who and when to kill somebody, she does it in her own specific way. And her dilemma in this movie is that she’s being asked to kill somebody who she doesn’t believe deserves it. And for some reason she can’t believe that they deserve to be killed …

I like Sy because he’s a loyal cop playing by his own rules to make real justice and really do it with all his heart,” Sy said. “It’s more about instinct and feelings, you know? He’s the good guy, but sometimes he can cross the line to do what is best. That was very interesting for me.

Of course, both actors are big fans of John Woo and the original version of The Killer. “I love the original movie,” Emmanuel said. “I’ve seen it more than a couple of times. (John Woo) was an innovator of action, in my opinion. And just really cared about not just the action, and the sort of excitement and the spectacle of the action, but really cares about the characters and their emotional dilemma as you put it. And so it’s an excellent movie. I’ve seen a lot of John’s movies. I’m a massive fan of Face/Off. I think it’s one of my favorites of his, and Mission: Impossible 2 is obviously fantastic.” You can check out more of the interview on IGN.

The Killer remake, directed by John Woo from a script by Brian Helgeland, will stream exclusively on Peacock on August 23rd.
