Kick-Ass reboot: Chloë Grace Moretz’s Hit-Girl could possibly return in future movies according to Matthew Vaughn

Kick-Ass reboot: Chloë Grace Moretz’s Hit-Girl could possibly return in future movies according to Matthew Vaughn

Matthew Vaughn plans to take Kick-Ass in a new direction and even plans to explore more Hit-Girl in an extended universe.

One of the standout characters in Matthew Vaughn‘s 2010 superhero film, Kick-Ass, is the daughter of Nicolas Cage’s Big Daddy character, Hit-Girl portrayed with a breakthrough performance that put Chloë Grace Moretz on the map. Along with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Moretz would return for the sequel, which didn’t quite duplicate the success of the original. The director of the first, Matthew Vaughn, has gone on to tackle Marvel’s famous mutants in X-Men: First Class, then helmed the trilogy of films in the Kingsman franchise.

Vaughn has the new spy comedy Argylle coming soon early next year. Lately, he’s revealed shocking details about Fox’s trick to have Halle Berry sign on to X-Men: The Last Stand. Now the director says his Kick-Ass reboot has room for more Chloë Grace Moretz’s Hit-Girl in the future. ScreenRant reports that Vaughn’s Kick-Ass 3 will feature a new cast as he takes the series in a different direction that takes the state of what superhero movies have now become back to the drawing board for a new twist on the genre, according to statements he’s made at New York’s recent Comic-Con. If the new Kick-Ass is a success, Vaughn would be open to catching back up with Mindy Macready.

According to ScreenRant, “Although Moretz will not return as Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass 3, Vaughn has also stated that he is open to exploring future options with the character after the reboot releases. If Kick-Ass 3 proves to be a success, it could set a foundation for a more extended universe within the Kick-Ass franchise that could re-establish Moretz in a rendition of an older Hit-Girl.”

Grace Moretz’s show on Amazon, The Peripheral, has recently been given the axe despite getting a second-season renewal. However, she can also be heard as the voice of Nimona in the recent Netflix animated adaptation of ND Stevenson’s classic fantasy graphic novel, Nimona. Meanwhile, Matthew Vaughn also intends to follow up on the Kingsman prequel with a sequel titled The Traitor King and will pick up after the post-credits sting that introduced a young Adolf Hitler that intends to start his evil reign.

David Yates won’t return for Harry Potter TV series

David Yates won’t return for Harry Potter TV series

David Yates, who helmed half of the Harry Potter movies, won’t be directing any episodes of the upcoming TV series.

The Harry Potter franchise had a string of directors for its duration but no one had a run like David Yates, who directed half of the franchise’s entries, beginning with 2007’s Order of the Phoenix and ending with the two-part Deathly Hallows films. And while he even continued his run with the first three Fantastic Beasts movies, he is willingly avoiding the upcoming Harry Potter series.

Speaking with ComicBook.com, David Yates said his time with the Harry Potter movies – that is, the franchise that has taken up 70% of his filmography – is most definitely over. “Do you know what? Honestly, I could not, in any conceivable way, get involved…It’s simply: I spent a long time at that school, in those corridors and in those classrooms, and it was an exquisite experience and one I will always treasure. But to go back and do another year or two, for me, I feel I’ve left it.” Instead, he would rather team with producer Lawrence Grey, who he made this year’s Pain Hustlers with. All of this might be quite a revelation to Harry Potter fans, as David Yates said just last month that he had a “never say never” approach to the series. So maybe what he really meant was “never means never”?

Still, David Yates is pulling for the Harry Potter series’ success, saying, “I wish that show so well, it’s gonna be amazing to see them re-explore all it can be for the next generation. I think it’ll be a challenge for everyone involved, but it’s a very exciting enterprise and I wish it well. It was an amazing experience for me, and I know the other filmmakers who were involved, and it will be for the next generation of filmmakers.”

Collectively, the Harry Potter franchise has grossed over $9.5 billion worldwide, with David Yates’ entries all sitting in the top five (only Sorcerer’s Stone helps round out that figure). As such, Yates might be missing out on a promising payday – and Max out on some potential viewers – by sidestepping the Harry Potter series.

Do you think some of the Harry Potter movies’ directors should come back for the TV adaptations? Which book are you most looking forward to being adapted for the small screen?

Frankenstein: Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, Mia Goth roles in Guillermo del Toro film revealed

Frankenstein: Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, Mia Goth roles in Guillermo del Toro film revealed

The roles Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, and Mia Goth will be playing in Guillermo del Toro’s version of Frankenstein have been revealed

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight), Andrew Garfield (Tick, Tick… Boom!), and Mia Goth (Pearl) would be starring in the adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein that director Guillermo del Toro has set up at the Netflix streaming service. Del Toro recently confirmed that casting news – and added that Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) will be in the film as well. Now it appears that Whats on Netflix has revealed which roles Isaac, Garfield, and Goth will be playing!

According to the site, Garfield will be playing Dr. Frankenstein himself, while Isaac takes on the role of the Monster and Goth plays the Bride. They’ve also heard that the project is going by the working title Prodigal Father, and that it has the following logline: Set in Eastern Europe in the 19th Century, the story of Dr. Pretorius, who needs to track down Frankenstein’s monster- who is believed to have died in a fire forty years before–in order to continue the experiments of Dr. Frankenstein.

In that case, it would be easy to assume that Waltz will be playing Dr. Pretorius.

Del Toro has been talking about making a new version of Frankenstein for more than a decade. At one point, he did have the project set up at Universal, with Doug Jones (The Shape of Water) on board to play Frankenstein’s Monster. The movie got far enough into pre-production that Jones even saw a bust of the Monster that was inspired by Bernie Wrightson’s artwork in an illustrated adaptation of Shelley’s novel that Wrightson spent seven years working on. But then the project fell apart. Now it’s finally happening at the Netflix streaming service, which previously teamed with del Toro on Pinocchio and the anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, or Prodigal Father, is expected to begin filming on February 12th, 2024. The production will last nearly five months, wrapping up on July 5th. Filming will take place in Ontario, Canada, and possibly in London, England as well.

Are you looking forward to seeing what del Toro does with Frankenstein? What do you think of the roles Garfield, Isaac, and Goth will be taking on? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Thanksgiving: posters for Eli Roth film pay tribute to classic slashers

Thanksgiving: posters for Eli Roth film pay tribute to classic slashers

New posters for Eli Roth’s long-awaited slasher Thanksgiving pay tribute to classic slashers from decades past

Sixteen years after Eli Roth made the ’80s slasher faux trailer Thanksgiving for the Robert Rodriguez / Quentin Tarantino double feature Grindhouse, the concept has finally been expanded into a feature film that’s set to reach theatres on November 17th – that being the Friday before Thanksgiving this year. In the build-up to this long-awaited release, our friends at Bloody Disgusting got their hands on a batch of Thanksgiving posters that pay tribute to classic slashers, and you can now check them out at the bottom of this article!

Roth has been wanting to make a feature version of Thanksgiving ever since he made the faux trailer, and even wrote the screenplay with Jeff Rendell (who played the homicidal pilgrim in the trailer) a dozen years ago. The feature has happened thanks to Spyglass Media stepping in to provide the funding. Roth jumped at the chance to get the movie made, even though it meant having Deadpool‘s Tim Miller take over as director on the reshoots for his video game adaptation Borderlands.

Roth and Rendell are producing the film with Roger Birnbaum. Spyglass chairman and CEO Gary Barber and president of production Peter Oillataguerre serve as executive producers alongside Kate Harrison and Greg Denny of Cream Productions Inc. Oillataguerre and SVP Production & Development Chris Stone are overseeing the project for Spyglass while Caellum Allan and Kelseigh Coombs oversee for TriStar.

If you’ve watched the Thanksgiving trailer, you have a good idea of what this slasher movie is going to be about, but here’s the synopsis: After a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts – the birthplace of the infamous holiday.

The film stars Addison Rae (He’s All That), Jalen Thomas Brooks (Walker), Nell Verlaque (Big Shot), Milo Manheim (Z-O-M-B-I-E-S), Gina Gershon (Bound), comedian Tim Dillon (who was in a TV show called Thanksgiving), Rick Hoffman (Hostel), Gabriel Davenport (Mistletoe Time Machine), Tomaso Sanelli (Titans), Jenna Warren (The Young Arsonists), and Patrick Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy). Character details have been kept under wraps so far, but we do know that Patrick Dempsey is playing the town sheriff.

Speaking with Collider, Roth explained that he considers this movie to be a “reboot” of the non-existent one he made the faux trailer for. “We were trying to get the script right. For years, I was just connecting the dots between the trailer, and then I was like, ‘Am I just filming the scenes in between what I already did before?’ The big revelation was, (Jeff Rendell) said, ‘I have to just pretend that Thanksgiving 1980 exists and that it was so offensive that every print was destroyed, and the only thing that survived was the trailer. This is the reboot of what that movie was. Every copy of the script was burned. Every print was burned. The only thing that survived was that one trailer, on the darkest corners of the internet. So, we have to make a movie based on that. This is the reboot of what that was.’ That freed me up creatively to go, ‘I can use a couple of my favorite things in the trailer, but I don’t have to worry about recreating the trailer.’ That trailer was for a movie where every print was destroyed. Now, this is gonna be its own thing.

Are you looking forward to Thanksgiving? Let us know by leaving a comment below – but first, take a look at these posters, which pay tribute to My Bloody Valentine, Friday the 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Silent Night, Deadly Night:

De Niro really spanked DiCaprio in Killers of the Flower Moon

De Niro really spanked DiCaprio in Killers of the Flower Moon

DiCaprio must have been naughty enough on the set of Killers of the Flower Moon for De Niro to actually whack him with a paddle.

One of the more memorable scenes in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon finds Robert De Niro’s William King Hale disciplining his nephew, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Ernest Burkhart, with a paddle. And while a little movie magic could have prevented DiCaprio from taking a genuine whooping, according to cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, each whack was the real deal.

Prieto – who has lensed all of Scorsese’s films since 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street – told Insider that while DiCaprio did utilize padding on his keister, there were multiple takes of De Niro wailing on his co-star. “I do remember doing them quite a few times and thinking, ‘Oh, that must hurt…There was some padding on his butt. But you could tell De Niro was really hitting him.” Hey, De Niro is known for immersing himself in his roles, and taking a paddle to DiCaprio’s butt is no different.

He added that the moment was never part of either David Grann’s source novel or the Scorsese/Eric Roth-penned screenplay. “I don’t think that was in the first script…That was something that was added, and it’s shocking in the film.” While the moment is a crucial one in the relationship between Burkhart and Hale, we’d like to think it really came about as De Niro wanting to punish DiCaprio for his constant ad-libbing.

Although their big screen collaborations are rare, it does seem rather fitting that their first pairing, 1993’s This Boy’s Life, had a number of tense scenes in which De Niro and DiCaprio get into physical altercations. There were no paddles, but it offers one half of a unique bookend for the two. That movie was also the one where Scorsese first took note of DiCaprio, who he has now made six films with.

Killers of the Flower Moon is well on its way to the Academy Awards and will no doubt earn a wealth of nominations. Reviews have been some of the best of the year, with our own Chris Bumbray giving it a “perfecto-mundo” 10/10.

The Process: Halle Berry is set to produce and star in psychological thriller

The Process: Halle Berry is set to produce and star in psychological thriller

Halle Berry is set to appear in a new psychological thriller about a cult and will also produce through her banner, HalleHolly.

Prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Halle Berry had attached herself to a new psychological thriller that she is also set to produce, titled The Process. Deadline reports that Berry will be producing through her company, HalleHolly, with Robert Kravis and Karl Herrmann producing through their Pioneer Pictures banner. Berry is coming off of a personal passion project from Netflix, which she also directed, in which she starred as an MMA fighter, called Bruised. She could also be seen in the recent disaster movie Moonfall by famous Earth-destroying filmmaker Roland Emmerich. Tara Miele will be sitting in the director’s chair for The Process.

Kravis and Herrmann shared their enthusiasm about the upcoming project, “We are thrilled to be working with HalleHolly to bring Levin’s amazing screenplay to the screen. Tara’s vision for the film—a Kubrickian psychological thriller taking us down the rabbit hole of self-help cults, and Halle’s interpretation of the film’s lead character, Kirsa—a woman fighting to preserve her marriage and her sanity amid an oppressive cult of personality, will leave audiences breathless.”

The synopsis, according to Deadline, involves “a seemingly happily married couple, who attend the weekend seminar of Aiden, a renowned self-help guru, and are asked to examine their individual lives, careers, and ultimately their marriage, but when Kirsa resists Aiden’s ‘process’ and his cult of committed volunteers, and Peter buys in, their relationship and sanity are quickly put to the test.”

The screenplay comes from scribe Levin Menekse. The director, Miele, glowed about the script, “It’s so rare to find a script like Levin Menekse’s THE PROCESS that is gripping, emotionally resonant, and feels essential in this moment. I’m thrilled to get to bring this gem to life and to collaborate with Halle Berry, who brings such raw, real presence to the screen as an actress and is also an incredibly thoughtful collaborator and savvy producer.” Miele’s recent work includes the new Apple Original Series, Lessons in Chemistry, which stars Brie Larson. She had also directed a standalone episode of another Apple series, the anthology titled, Little America.

FilmNation Entertainment is set to launch the international sales for The Process at AFM with Verve Ventures and WME Independent will be co-repping on the North American rights.

Physicians for Informed Consent States, ‘Chicken Pox (Varicella) Vaccine Has Not Been Proven Safer Than Chicken Pox’

Physicians for Informed Consent States, ‘Chicken Pox (Varicella) Vaccine Has Not Been Proven Safer Than Chicken Pox’
Free educational materials help parents make better-informed vaccination decisions

Chicken Pox Infection vs. Varicella Vaccine

Death and Permanent Injury Risk Comparison for Children in the U.S.

Physicians for Informed Consent (PIC) has introduced two new educational documents, “Varicella (Chicken Pox): What Parents Need to Know” and “Varicella Vaccine: Is It Safer Than Chicken Pox?” The educational materials include key scientific data on the risks of chicken pox as well as the risks of the varicella vaccine, assisting parents in making a more informed risk-benefit calculation for vaccination.

“Now, more than ever, parents are motivated to learn more about the risks of childhood infections and their respective vaccines — and they want to know the numbers,” said Dr. Shira Miller, founder and president of Physicians for Informed Consent. "Although many parents remember from experience that chicken pox is generally benign, as the chicken pox vaccine is required for childcare and school attendance in all states, and with no religious or personal belief exemption in five states, including California, we’re pleased to now make available for free a Disease Information Statement and Vaccine Risk Statement for chicken pox."

Important facts from the Varicella (Chicken Pox) Disease Information Statement (DIS) are as follows:

  • More than 96% of new varicella infections are benign (1) and not reported to public health departments.
  • Fatal cases of varicella are rare in the United States. Before the introduction of the varicella vaccination program, one in 40,000 or 0.003% of varicella cases were fatal.
  • Because varicella resolves on its own in almost all cases, usually only rest and hydration are necessary.
  • Immune globulin is available to treat immunocompromised patients who are exposed to chicken pox, such as those on chemotherapy.

Key facts from the Varicella (Chicken Pox) Vaccine Risk Statement (VRS) are as follows:

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states, “It is not known how long a vaccinated person is protected against varicella.”
  • The Institute of Medicine has not ruled out the possibility that varicella vaccination can lead to stroke as well as several neurological and autoimmune disorders, including encephalopathy, cerebellar ataxia, transverse myelitis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, small fiber neuropathy, arthropathy, and thrombocytopenia.
  • A study published in The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal shows the varicella vaccine may cause permanent injury 44 times more often than fatal varicella.
  • The chicken pox (varicella) vaccine has not been proven safer than chicken pox.

To safeguard children’s health, parents need access to balanced educational information on infectious diseases and vaccines. PIC makes scientific data freely available through its education program, a growing collection of concise, reader-friendly educational materials that support parents, physicians, and policymakers in calculating the risk-benefit ratio of vaccination. To read the newest DIS and VRS documents on chicken pox and the varicella vaccine, visit physiciansforinformedconsent.org/varicella.
