Dracula: Chloé Zhao is still working on her sci-fi Western take on horror classic

Eternals director Chloé Zhao is still working on her futuristic, sci-fi Western take on Dracula, which was announced 2 years ago

Two years have gone by since it was announced that Eternals director Chloé Zhao had set up a Dracula project at Universal Pictures, one which was described as being “an original, futuristic, sci-fi Western” take on the Dracula concept, with “themes of being on society’s fringes“. But since we haven’t heard much about Zhao’s Dracula movie over the last two years, and given the fact that Universal has made two other Dracula projects since then – the horror comedy Renfield, which is set to reach theatres on April 14th and stars Nicolas Cage as Dracula, and The Last Voyage of the Demeter, which is scheduled for an August 11th theatrical release and is a feature adaptation of one chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula – it would be understandable if you thought Zhao’s Dracula project had been scrapped. Or if you forgot it had even been announced in the first place. But during a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Zhao has confirmed that she’s still working on it.

When asked if her Dracula movie is still in development, Zhao answered, “Yes, I’m writing the script right now.

Zhao has previously said she was looking at Stoker’s Draculato really see behind the pages, to discover the meanings behind each page and the essence of it. I’m a huge fan of the book. And I wanted to see what essence I can find (in Dracula), and then be able to reimagine this really beloved character I love so much. … I like complicated characters.” Zhao said that Dracula is a very important book for her, and “immortality is something that I started exploring on Eternals, but is something I want to question and understand.

Are you interested in seeing Chloé Zhao’s Dracula movie, and are you glad to hear that it’s still in the works? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below. I’m very curious to see how this “futuristic, sci-fi Western” take on Dracula is going to turn out. Since it’s described as being “original”, it seems like it won’t be a direct adaptation of Stoker’s novel, but rather a story that imagines how Dracula would exist in a very different setting.

Colossal Impact

Colossal supports James Beard Foundation

On Feb. 27, 2023, the James Beard Foundation (JBF) launched a series of impact program workshops starting in Phoenix, Arizona. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit that celebrates, supports, and elevates the people behind America's food culture while championing a standard of good food anchored in talent, equity, and sustainability is working to create deeper engagement in communities across the U.S.

Building Your Culinary Workplace Culture: Values-Based Leadership kicked off the campaign and was led by the James Beard Foundation's vice president of programs, Dr. Anne McBride. The workshop attracted 24 professionals from across the region, including as far as Utah, and was followed by a networking reception. James Beard award-winning chef and restaurateur Chris Bianco and the Bianco Group's CEO Seth Sulka generously hosted the group at Pane Bianco in Central Phoenix. "A key component of the James Beard Foundation's mission is to support the growth of sustainable and equitable work cultures in the culinary industry," notes Dr. McBride. "This workshop gave participants practical steps to foster their own intentional workplace cultures and to lead by example."

At the workshop, McBride spoke about how the values of a restaurant are becoming a key decision-making factor for guests—who increasingly seek to support places with which they feel aligned. As such, she touched on how important it is for restaurant leadership to create a company culture that aligns with its deeper values.

Jaime-Faye Bean, VP of development, also spoke about the Foundation's plans to pair these sorts of workshops in support of the food and beverage industry with culinary events around the country and how Arizona will be an important market to tap into further.

Colossal Management, LLC made this workshop possible as it has a strong relationship with JBF. Colossal's gift helps support this year's JBF National Scholars Program, which provides 10 high-impact scholarships of $20,000 each to exceptionally talented candidates who have demonstrated potential for leadership roles in the culinary arts, food studies, agriculture, hospitality management, and related fields. To ensure regional diversity of this national program, one awardee is selected per year from each of the 10 geographic regions defined by the James Beard Foundation Awards. This year's National Scholar recipients will be announced in early summer of 2023.

The Favorite Chef Competition will be launching later this year and will be operated by Colossal as part of a fundraising campaign on behalf of DTCare. Learn more about the fundraising process here. Donations from votes cast during the Competition will go directly to DTCare, which will then grant the donations to the James Beard Foundation, minus Competition fees and costs.

Interview: Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Lucy Liu, and More Talk Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Interview: Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Lucy Liu, and More Talk Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is better than I could have ever anticipated. In fact, I loved this sequel (our review drops Wednesday). It helps that David F. Sandberg has the ability to balance action and comedy, with a bit of horror inspiration. And it’s also fantastic to see Meagan Good, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, and DJ Cotrona bring the charm. And Grace Caroline Currey is a delight as young and “superhero” Mary. Add to that the talents of Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, and Rachel Zegler, and you have something special.

Recently, we had the opportunity to chat with this incredible group of actors. First up, it’s always great to talk with Jack Dylan Graham, who once again steals the show with his hilariously charming performance. And talking with Grazer and Angel together happened to be a very fine time. The two talked about the relationships in the film, and just how nice Asher’s suit was. It was a very nice suit. These two fellas are incredible engaging, and it was a real joy speaking with them.

As for Zachary Levi, I’ve always appreciated talking with this very funny man. And it was terrific catching up on Shazam’s latest adventures, and what this journey has been like for Mr. Levi. We also spoke with the terrific Grace Caroline Currey, DJ Cotrona, and Ross Butler, and it was yet another really fun interview. And speaking of fun, both Meagan Good and Adam Brody were terrific, both in the film and in the interview. The two talked about what they learned from their younger counterparts. The energy that this group of actors brought to the press day made for a terrific day of in-person interviews – slowly but surely, they are returning.

Finishing up, I had a terrific conversation with both Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler. The two opened up about playing two of the three Daughters of Atlas. And of course, what it was like working with the legendary Helen Mirren. Not only was the cast excited to talk about the new film, they also happen to create an impressive ensemble in Sandberg’s exciting return to Shazam! Check out Fury of the Gods this Friday at a theatre near you.

IGH Naturals, Inc. Receives Patent for the Development of Nutrition With Human Milk Oligosaccharides for Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease

IGH Naturals, Inc. Receives Patent for the Development of Nutrition With Human Milk Oligosaccharides for Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease
Nephrologist-led startup continues to expand its Intellectual Property.

IGH Naturals, Inc., a Rocklin-based startup that focuses on functional foods, has announced that it has received a notice of allowance (NOA) for its patent application that utilizes synthesized oligosaccharides for improving clinical outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease. The patent application is the fourth granted for the company.

The newly approved patent will allow the company to design medical foods using a blend of synthesized oligosaccharides for improving inflammation and its related outcomes in patients with early-stage kidney disease as well as those on dialysis. These synthesized oligosaccharides were first discovered in human milk and hence termed human milk oligosaccharides (or HMOs). The company's first HMO-based electrolyte formula, HuMOLYTE™, was granted a patent in 2021 and is designed specifically for patients on chemotherapy or those with infectious or inflammatory diarrhea.

Dr. Kharait, the Nephrologist Founder and CEO of the company, said, "I am glad that the data we submitted to the USPTO with our application allowed them to grant this patent in a timely manner." He added, "Patients with kidney disease suffer from many complications that are directly linked to gut health and inflammation, but specific therapies to reduce inflammation are either highly toxic or ineffective in kidney diseases, particularly in patients on dialysis. HMOs present a new option since they are safe and scalable and can be used through nutritional sources for these patients."

Synthesized oligosaccharides, including certain HMOs, are designated as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for oral consumption by the FDA. Many HMOs are commonly used in infant nutrition. The company plans to begin clinical trials on patients in the coming year and is looking for strategic partners.

Rich Foreman, the COO of IGH Naturals, Inc., said, "We are excited to continue our efforts to improve clinical outcomes for patients with chronic kidney disease through medical foods that incorporate synthesized oligosaccharides. Our clinical nutrition arm is dedicated to studying HMOs in diverse clinical applications, particularly kidney disease, chemotherapy and alcoholism."

In addition to its HMO-based products, the company has a magnesium-rich electrolyte mix, MAGNAK®, that reduces muscle cramps and fatigue in athletes. This electrolyte formula has been granted two distinct patents for its formulation. The company published a clinical study using this electrolyte mix in the Journal of Exercise and Nutrition last year. The startup has more patent applications currently in preparation and some in review by the USPTO, expanding the applications for their products to diverse clinical conditions - from athletic hydration to clinical nutrition.

Dr. Janjua explained the niche rhinoplasty technique called 'Alarplasty', also known as nostril narrowing or nostril reduction. The procedure highlights discussed include who can benefit from this procedure and how it is different than a regular nose job. Dr. Janjua stated, "All of my African American patients who wanted alarplasty were told by other plastic surgeons to go for a full nose job. But that was not their concern. They just wanted smaller nostrils and that is what alarplasty does." Many people have traveled from all over the United States and from other countries to get this 30-minute procedure without going to sleep.

OneMain Financial: How to Borrow Money in an Emergency

OneMain Financial: The term emergency means different things to different people. Some go into a panic when the cat stays out too late. Others are calm under fire even when the world is falling apart around them. For the purposes of this article, we're going to focus on emergencies that require emergency loans. Common examples include:

  • Auto accidents or mechanical failures
  • Urgent medical care
  • Non-insured damage to property
  • Unexpected job loss
  • Eviction or foreclosure

These all qualify as major life events. What makes them emergencies is that they are unexpected. That's when the financial burden is at its heaviest. Planning and saving for a significant purchase is one thing. However, getting hit with a sudden, unplanned expense can create a critical need for financing. This is when consumers can turn to banks and online lenders to provide the financial support they need.

What is an emergency loan?

An emergency loan can be a personal installment loan that is used to cover the costs of an emergency. One example of this is a loan for medical expenses. The applicant requests an amount equal to or slightly greater than the total of all those expenses, pays them off in full, then makes monthly payments on the installment loan until it's paid off.

Emergency loans come in many varieties, each with different terms and conditions. Many have fixed interest rates for the life of the loan and monthly payments that will be the same amount each month, making them easier to work into a budget. Emergency loans are available at banks, credit unions, and through online lenders. Shopping around before applying for a loan is recommended.

How to apply for an emergency loan

Most lenders have an online application process, with many banks and credit unions maintaining brick-and-mortar locations where prospective borrowers can visit in person to ask questions about loan options and fill out an application. All lenders will verify the applicant's identity along with income to assess the borrower's ability to repay the loan. Bringing the following documentation is recommended:

State-issued ID Card or valid Driver's License

Most recent paystubs (2-4 weeks)

Most recent W2 or 1099 form

A current passport can also be used to verify identity. For online applications, the applicant will be asked to securely submit a digital copy of their identification and income documentation. The simplest way is to use a mobile phone to take a picture and upload it. Many lenders have a camera function built into their websites to facilitate that.

Once the application is submitted, approval time may vary depending on the lender's procedures. However, it's not unheard of to get approval the same day and receive funds the following day. Terms and conditions vary by lender. It's best to find multiple offers and compare them before making a final decision.

Bottom line

An unexpected financial expense can be life-altering. Stretching resources to come up with the funds to cover it could negatively impact the payments of other bills and basic living expenses, so an emergency loan may be one of the best ways to avoid further financial strain.

Castle Connolly Releases 2023 Exceptional Women in Medicine

Castle Connolly Releases 2023 Exceptional Women in Medicine
Over 8,400 doctors in 77 specialties honored as outstanding women in the medical field

Castle Connolly today announced the release of the 2023 Exceptional Women in Medicine. This list recognizes female Castle Connolly Top Doctors across the United States who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, expertise and dedication in their respective fields. There are over 8,400 doctors represented, across 77 specialties and all 50 states.

The Exceptional Women in Medicine list is compiled through a rigorous selection process that includes peer nominations, extensive research, and evaluation by the Castle Connolly research team. In addition to meeting the criteria to be selected as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor, these doctors also have additional qualifications, including contributions to healthcare through volunteer work, awards and honors, training at top institutions, contributions to research and academics, and innovations in their field of specialty.

According to data from the Kaiser Family Foundation, women account for 37% of physicians in the U.S., and have been historically underrepresented in medicine and less likely to hold leadership positions. 43% of first-time Castle Connolly Top Doctors in the past year were women, increasing the representation of women by 13% compared to the year prior, to over 19,000 women honored as 2023 Castle Connolly Top Doctors.

"We are proud to see an increasing number of women recognized as Castle Connolly Top Doctors each year," said Steve Leibforth, Managing Director, Castle Connolly. "It is our hope that by recognizing and highlighting the achievements of these Exceptional Women in Medicine, we can inspire more women to pursue careers in medicine and help to address the under-representation of women in certain medical specialties and leadership positions."

"Many women seek out female physicians, because we have different life experiences, and they may feel more comfortable talking about something that they know their doctor may have experienced themselves," said Dr. Amy Lichtenfeld, Allergist-Immunologist & Internist at Eastside Medical Associates, and 5-time recipient of the Exceptional Women in Medicine recognition. "The medical field has become more diverse in the last few decades, and that helps all patients feel more comfortable speaking to someone who may come from a similar background to them or who looks like them."

The Exceptional Women in Medicine recognition is part of Castle Connolly's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative, designed to honor top clinicians and enable patients to find Castle Connolly Top Doctors who have shared backgrounds and experiences. The first-ever list of Castle Connolly Top Black Doctors was released in February, and Castle Connolly will launch other new recognitions in 2023, including:

  • Top Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Doctors (May)
  • Top LGBTQ+ Doctors (June)
  • Top Hispanic/Latin Doctors (September)

New Study in Experimental Biology and Medicine Shows the Role of Sphingosine Kinase 2 as Therapeutic Target for Diabetes

New Study in Experimental Biology and Medicine Shows the Role of Sphingosine Kinase 2 as Therapeutic Target for Diabetes

A recently published article in Experimental Biology and Medicine (Volume 248, Issue 1, January 2023) provides a mechanism by which Sphingosine kinase 2 (ShK2) impacts Insulin receptor (InsR) trafficking, thereby regulating insulin signaling. The study, led by Dr. Pu Xia, in the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Zhongshan Hospital and Fudan Institute for Metabolic Diseases of Fudan University (China), describes that inhibition of ShK2 results in attenuation of clathrin mediated endocytosis of InsR.

Disturbed InsR trafficking is associated with impaired insulin signaling and the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Sphingosine kinase 2 (SphK2) is a lipid kinase that regulates a variety of cellular processes, including acting as a key regulator of hepatic insulin signaling and glucose homeostasis. However, the specific function of SphK2 in insulin receptor trafficking remained undefined leading to the current study by Aji et al.

This study, led by Dr. Xia, analyzed the role of Sphingosine kinase (SphK2) in regulating insulin receptor trafficking by analyzing Huh7 cells, which is an immortalized cell line derived from male hepatoma tissue, treated with a specific SphK2 small molecule inhibitor or siRNA. Huh7 cells are often used as a substitute for primary hepatocytes. Flow cytometry and immunofluorescence assays were used to investigate the role of SphK2 in insulin receptor trafficking. SphK2 was found to be able to regulate insulin receptor traffic, while SphK1, another isoform of Sphingosine kinase, did not. These findings demonstrate that SphK2 plays an essential function in controlling hepatic insulin signaling by regulating insulin receptor trafficking.

Dr. Steven R. Goodman, Editor-in-Chief of Experimental Biology and Medicine, said, "Xia and colleagues have provided clear insight into the mechanism by which Sphingosine kinase 2 regulates Insulin Receptor endocytosis, and therefore Insulin signaling and glucose homeostasis. In doing so, they identify a new therapeutic target for treatment of Type 2 Diabetes."
