Jane See White, Dedicated and Decorated Journalist, Dies

Jane See White died January 11, 2023. She was 72. The Mexico, Missouri native had an award-winning 40-plus year career in newspaper and magazine journalism, including national reporting and editing with the Associated Press, and teaching journalism as part of  the University of Arizona School of Journalism.

White was the daughter of Robert Mitchell White II and Barbara Whitney Spurgeon.

At the age of nine White began a dedicated journalism career as the founding Editor and Publisher of The Mexico (Missouri) Junior Ledger. The summer weekly newspaper covered neighborhood news, but ceased publication when White began spending her summers at Camp Bryn Afon in Rhinelander, Wisconsin.

She graduated from Mexico High School, then in 1972, from Hollins College with honors and a BA in History and American Studies.

Upon graduation from Hollins College, White spent two years as a reporter for The Roanoke Times then moved back to Missouri as a feature writer for The Kansas City Star. There she earned awards for an investigative series regarding state-run schools for the mentally disabled, and another related to state psychiatric hospitals.

In 1976 she transitioned to the Associated Press in New York City as an editor on the World Desk. From 1978 to 1981 she was also part of an AP six-person national writing team, writing feature news stories for datelines around the country. Her work included covering the Love Canal toxic crisis, exposing and examining the early controversy over the health effects of exposure to Agent Orange.

Peter Arnett, awarded the 1966 Pulitzer Prize in International Reporting, and known broadly for his coverage of the Vietnam and Gulf Wars, was a colleague of White's at the Associated Press. "I had the good fortune to be based in AP Headquarters as a Special Correspondent during the 1970s when Jane was steadily building her journalism career," Arnett recently wrote.  ". . . touching tributes to Jane White on her purposeful life in journalism and her recent untimely death brought back memories of not only working with her, but also of Jane's sparkling personality and her moxie, a very American word of that era used to describe courage and determination."

White joined Medical Economics magazine as a writer in 1982. Her progression with the publication included Professional Editor, News / Bureaus Editor and Head of the Editorial Division for the national bi-weekly non-clinical publication.

In 1987, her passion for newspaper journalism led her back to Virginia and The Roanoke Times and World News where she was the Deputy City Editor, then City Editor. Her responsibilities included daily and Sunday news coverage by 40 reporters and six assistant city editors.

White moved to Arizona in 1991, holding various writing and editing roles for The Phoenix Gazette and The Arizona Republic, including Features Editor and Assistant Managing Editor.

From 2006 until her retirement in 2014, White was an Editor and editorial writer for The Arizona Daily Star. Editorials White researched and wrote won first-place prizes from the Arizona Press Club, the Arizona Newspapers Association, and were included in nomination for the Pulitzer Prize.

Between 1997 and 2014, White also shared her expertise and passion for journalism with future journalists, as an adjunct Professor with the University of Arizona School of Journalism.

Dell Laser Consultants Announces Treatment of First Patient in Austin With the IC-8® Apthera™ IOL

Dr. Steven J. Dell at Dell Laser Consultants is the first in Austin, Texas, to treat cataract patients with the IC-8® Apthera™ IOL since its U.S. FDA Approval.

"At Dell Laser Consultants, we are focused on providing advanced patient-centered care, which is why we are committed to offering the most advanced technologies to our patients. The Apthera lens offers a solution to patients who are looking for a continuous, clear range of vision from near to far without blurry zones. It also helps patients with a low amount of corneal astigmatism," said Dr. Dell. "I am truly excited to be offering a first-of-its-kind lens that helps patients achieve their best personal vision." Dr. Dell was one of the first surgeons in the U.S. to implant this lens which may offer vision correction to patients who are not candidates for other technologies.

By the age of 65, more than 90% of people worldwide are estimated to have begun to develop cataracts. Cataracts are a clouding of the eye's natural lens that leads to loss of vision over time.1 Treatment for cataracts involves the surgical removal of the natural lens and replacement with an intraocular lens, or IOL. Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures in the world, with nearly 28 million cataract procedures being performed worldwide each year.2 The majority of patients with cataracts are treated with a standard monofocal (single-focus) lens, which allows the patient to have excellent far vision; however, patients remain dependent on glasses for near and intermediate vision.

The Apthera IOL is a replacement lens designed to give patients the advantage of clear, focused vision from near to far, and everything in between. It is the first lens to utilize small aperture technology. Unlike other lenses that split, shift, or stretch light, the Apthera lens naturally focuses light entering the eye through its small aperture, seamlessly extending range of vison so patients can see text, people, and objects, across a full range of focal distances. The Apthera IOL is also the first lens to help patients who have a low amount of astigmatism (as much as 1.5 diopters).3

For more information about the Apthera lens, please visit www.AptheraAdvantage.com or request an appointment online with Dr. Dell, or call us at 512-347-0255.

Legacy Suite Releases LegacyPass™ to Secure and Encrypt Passwords Using the Blockchain
With LegacyPass™, sensitive data is kept safe and secure in a digital vault, allowing for the secure and convenient management of digital identities.

Legacy Suite

Legacy Suite

Legacy Suite, an industry leader in digital asset preservation, announces the release of LegacyPass™, its tailor-made solution for accessing, managing and sharing passwords conveniently from desktop or mobile devices. Passwords alone can no longer meet today's security needs; leveraging the immutability of the blockchain on the backend enables a seamless and password-less environment, allowing users to access accounts securely from all their devices with one click.

"We are thrilled to introduce the LegacyPass™ password manager to the market," said Gordon Bell, Founder and President of Legacy Suite. "Our team has worked hard to create a product that not only makes it easy to manage and protect your passwords but also keeps your sensitive information and documents secure."

A NordPass study found that the average person has roughly 100 passwords. According to Statista, approximately 15 million data records were exposed worldwide in the third quarter of 2022 alone—a figure that has increased by 37% compared to the previous quarter. With the growing number of online accounts and the increasing importance of strong passwords, it can be difficult for individuals and businesses to keep track of login information. LegacyPass™ solves this problem by securely storing a user's passwords in one convenient digital vault secured by the blockchain.

In its two years of operation, LegacyPass™ has had zero breaches and accumulated over 25,000 users. LegacyPass™ password manager uses AES256 encryption to ensure passwords and sensitive data are safe from potential hackers. Elliptic Curve Integrated Encryption Scheme (ECIES) combines ECC-based asymmetric cryptography with symmetric ciphers to provide data encryption, enabling smaller key sizes and reducing storage and transmission requirements.

Blockchain technology can revolutionize the way passwords are secured and managed. Using a decentralized, distributed ledger to store password information makes it virtually impossible for hackers to access or compromise data. Blockchain allows the data to be spread across a network of computers, making it more difficult to access or alter. Additionally, blockchain can provide added security measures such as encryption and secure key management, further protecting password information from unauthorized access.

Overall, the use of blockchain to secure passwords has the potential to significantly improve the security and reliability of online systems and services. To learn about Legacy Suite and how to secure digital assets, please visit https://www.legacysuite.com.

Dr. Saif Shere

Dr. Saif Shere of Brownstone Dental

Houstonians love their celebrities. But what if they could get the same treatment a celebrity gets when they visit the dentist? Brownstone Dental, founded by Dr. Saif Shere, is now offering the latest in dental technology and care to its patients with a new way to treat both general and cosmetic dental needs.

"We are so excited to offer this new opportunity for our patients," said Dr. Shere. "I really believe that everyone deserves a chance to feel like they're getting VIP treatment when they go to the dentist."

Known for his expertise, Dr. Saif Shere graduated with honors and became a board-certified dentist in 2008. Later, in 2010, he founded his own practice - Brownstone Dental. After more than a decade of service, Dr. Saif Shere has earned the reputation of being Houston's premier dental practitioner.

Many prominent personalities, including rappers and athletes, have had their teeth worked on by Dr. Shere. His patients come from all over the world because they know they can trust him to do the best work possible. Dr. Shere understands that people have different needs when it comes to their teeth, and he makes sure to take those needs into account at every appointment.

Dr. Shere is famous for treating his patients with a level of care that goes above and beyond what most dentists provide, but what sets him apart is his approach to cosmetic dentistry, which is all about innovation.

"I want to give them the Bollywood smile," says Dr. Shere.

In an industry where most dentists are content with the same old procedures, he always looks for new ways to improve the smile of their patients. From advanced technology that allows him to offer the latest in dental techniques to the innovative use of customized methods, Dr. Shere has embraced the future of dentistry and uses it every day to help his patients get the perfect smile.

He went to Klein High School before attending the University of Houston and then Baylor College of Dentistry. If Dr. Shere wasn't a celebrity dentist today, he would likely be teaching history at an esteemed university somewhere around town.

Shere's first celebrity case was four years ago when he worked with a prominent rapper. In his own words, "Every patient is a celebrity to me! We treat all of our patients with extravagant care."

Dr. Shere believes that when it comes to getting the best, there's always room for improvement. With this in mind, he and his team have been working on new ways to help patients achieve their dream smile—one that offers more options than ever before.

For dental work that needs to be done soon, scheduling an appointment with Dr. Shere is possible at Brownstone Dental. They can be contacted at (713) 271-3000 or visited at 9824 Fondren Rd., Houston, TX 77096, United States.

Digitunity to Participate in Patterson Foundation Workshop on Digital Access

Digitunity to Participate in Patterson Foundation Workshop on Digital Access
The Digital Access and Devices workshop explores how to scale digital inclusion work domestically and internationally with corporate and nonprofit partners.

Owning a large-screen device, such as a computer or tablet, is the foundation of digital equity. Giving individuals and communities access to a steady supply of free or low-cost large-screen devices helps to close the digital divide. This idea drives the work of Digitunity, a national nonprofit organization with over 40 years of experience in advancing digital equity through device ownership.

Because of this experience in increasing digital access through devices, Digitunity's executive director Scot Henley has been invited to participate in a Funder-to-Funder Workshop hosted by The Patterson Foundation in partnership with the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading entitled "Digital Access and Devices." The purpose of this workshop is to explore ways in which philanthropy can support expanding device ownership.

"By participating in the Patterson Foundation's workshop, we hope to demonstrate to corporate and philanthropic funders that by working collaboratively, it is within our reach to develop a lasting solution that makes it possible for residents in need to obtain affordable computers," Henley said.

Digitunity's mission is to close the digital divide. This is the challenge of 36 million Americans who do not have a computer at home and frequently reside in marginalized communities. These individuals often cannot access education, telehealth, and employment opportunities because they do not have a computer.

The Patterson Foundation strengthens the efforts of people, organizations, and communities by focusing on issues that address common aspirations, foster wide participation, and encourage learning and sharing. The Foundation's values guide its approach to philanthropy, demonstrating its collaborative philosophy and tenets of change.

The Patterson Foundation's Digital Access for All Initiative (DA4A) began with a multi-sector learning journey, exploring how thought leaders, government, businesses, and nonprofits operate and invest in digital access. After speaking to over 30 funders across the United States, the Foundation realized that funders struggle with decisions on how or whether to fund devices.

This latest workshop, which will be held virtually on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 12:30 p.m. EST, will explore how to scale digital inclusion work domestically and internationally with corporate and nonprofit partners. Those interested in this workshop can register here. Along with Henley, other participants include:

While funders continue to invest in organizations that provide low to no-cost computers to those in need, the need for devices disproportionately outweighs resources available to people, organizations, and communities. This workshop will address this concern and explore how funders could be best served by investing in systemic solutions rather than transactional ones.

In today's society, devices, like computers, have become essential to education, healthcare, civic engagement, economic development, and more. To learn more about the importance of device access for all, please visit Digitunity.org or download Digitunity's report "The Importance of Large Screen Device Ownership" here.

Fifth Circuit Grants Injunction Allowing PredictIt Market to Continue Operating

Fifth Circuit Grants Injunction Allowing PredictIt Market to Continue Operating

Aristotle International announces that the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals granted an injunction allowing the PredictIt political prediction market to continue operating while the Court considers granting longer term relief.

The Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) had ordered the PredictIt market to close by Febr. 15, 2023. A group of PredictIt traders, academic users, and market service provider Aristotle International, Inc. challenged the CFTC in federal court arguing that the shutdown order violates the Administrative Procedure Act. The case reached the Fifth Circuit after a lower court failed to issue a preliminary ruling in time to prevent certain effects on the market.

The injunction pending appeal granted by the Fifth Circuit on Jan. 26 will allow the PredictIt market to continue to operate while the Fifth Circuit considers the PredictIt traders' appeal. The Fifth Circuit has scheduled oral argument on that appeal for Feb. 8 in New Orleans. Following the February 8 hearing the Court is likely to issue an opinion addressing what relief is proper beyond the pendency of the appeal. The injunction pending appeal will allow PredictIt to continue to operate while the Court completes its consideration.

"This ruling will assist a thorough judicial review of the CFTC's abrupt closure. We look forward to the opportunity to appear before the Court on February 8 and present our arguments that the CFTC's closure order violated the APA and needs to be reversed," said David Mason, Aristotle General Counsel and former Federal Election Commission (FEC) Chairman.

Aristotle is the contract service provider for the PredictIt Market, which has operated under No-Action Relief CFTC 14-130 since 2014.

PlanetWatch Raises 3M€ to Boost Business Development

PlanetWatch Raises 3M€ to Boost Business Development
The CERN spin-off, building the first global decentralized air quality monitoring network, has raised 3M€ at a challenging time for blockchain companies

PlanetWatch raised a total of three million euros via a Simple Agreement for Future Equity (SAFE) complemented by bank loans. The CERN spin-off will use the capital to solidify the business' foundations and prepare for a larger Series A round later this year.

With a strong roadmap for 2023 that includes smart contracts for air quality data sales and the transition to a Web3 business model, PlanetWatch will use the funds towards three main purposes: strengthening the technical infrastructure, growing the air quality monitoring network, and boosting business development initiatives.

"We are honored that key entities from the Algorand ecosystem, as well as major French banks, continue to support PlanetWatch development," said Claudio Parrinello, co-founder and CEO of PlanetWatch. "At a challenging time for blockchain companies, PlanetWatch is being endorsed as a real-world blockchain project with a compelling use case and capable of closing business deals both with companies and governmental entities."

The round, bridging between a Seed one and a future Series A, was led by Borderless Capital. Additional investors include Algorand Inc. and the Algorand Foundation. Two French banks are providing additional liquidity via loans.

"In the framework of our $10M PLANETS.Fund, which is one of the largest air quality sensor runners in the PlanetWatch network, we are excited to lead this new financing round and back the company vision of building the largest decentralized global air quality monitoring network and use blockchain as the core tech to make it happen. We strongly believe that PlanetWatch can really disrupt and transform the air and green data economy and markets at a global scale," said David Garcia, CEO and Managing Partner at Borderless Capital

"It is central to our mission to support solutions that use the Algorand blockchain to address environmental challenges," said Matt Keller, Head of Impact at the Algorand Foundation. "With its affordable air quality sensors, PlanetWatch empowers people to become agents of change in their own communities which in turn - among other things - gives policymakers real-time data to help combat air pollution on a localized level. In 2022, they became the largest project on Algorand in terms of daily number of transactions, proving that the real-world utility and potential for broad impact is there. We're excited to support the team in delivering on the roadmap ahead."

About PlanetWatch

PlanetWatch is a high-tech startup based in France that's leveraging the Algorand blockchain, advanced algorithms, and high-performance yet affordable air quality sensors, to deploy dense, low-cost air quality monitoring networks. The PlanetWatch network, which has over 20,000 sensors currently active worldwide, powers advanced data products both for governmental and private sector entities, while building the first global immutable air quality data ledger. An official CERN spin-off company, PlanetWatch is also a member of the Crypto Sustainability Coalition fostered by the World Economic Forum.
